Saeed Anwar's omission clear case of double standards

Saeed Anwar, one of the best openers in present day cricket, slapped the face of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) when he declared himself fully fit for the coming Test series against New Zealand

Ali Kabir23-Apr-2002Saeed Anwar, one of the best openers in present day cricket, slapped the face of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) when he declared himself fully fit for the coming Test series against New Zealand. The opener was not considered by the PCB selection committee claiming that his fitness was in doubt. The PCB chief, time and again has been suggesting that players were the best judge of their fitness. He suggested the theory of rotation among a select band of players to save them from burn-out. Nobody can disagree with the PCB boss on his logic of burn-out. However, he has repeatedly said that the final selection of matches lie with the players themselves. But in the case of Saeed Anwar the same standard has not been applied. It only shows double standard of the PCB when Saeed Anwar was not consulted and someone or some people around the high ups decided themselves to rule out the classy opener. There were some whispers that he lacks match practice.Of course Saeed Anwar has not played competitive cricket for nearly six months. But he has to make a beginning if he is still good enough to be included in the team preparing for the World Cup next year. The functioning of the PCB is beyond imagination. Its working is as unpredictable as the team’s performance graph which is most unpredictable. There is jubilation on Pakistan’s thumping win over Sri Lanka in the final of the Sharjah Cup this week.It was nothing so surprising. The team’s performance is unpredictable and on a day when everything was in their favour and they were going great guns, the Sri Lanka team had the misfortune of losing their only match-winning bowler, Muttiah Muralitharan who had to leave the field with a dislocated shoulder before he could even spin a single delivery. This unforeseen incident electrified the morale of the Pakistan team and played a demoralising effect on the Islanders. The rest is history as Pakistan amassed 295, a match winning total. The PCB chief was so overjoyed that he announced a bonus of three lakh rupees to every member of the Pakistan contingent which included `extra baggage’ who was not a member of the team as well as the counselor specially flown in. It seems as if the PCB has turned into a charitable trust and the Pakistani cricketers are its only beneficiaries. What was so great about the Sharjah victory. It was the same Pakistan team which failed to score 19 runs in the last three overs against the same outfit. And if one goes with the entire achievement of the Pakistan team which has been boasting of world’s best talent for almost two decades, it has just one World Cup and one Asian Championship title to its credit.Sharjah and Sahara Cups have no credentials. They are just `Nataks’ of cricket staged by the international event managers to mint money from advertising and other hidden sources. If the overall performance at Sharjah is taken into consideration one would like to ask the manager and the coach what were they doing when Rashid Latif and Wasim Akram were struggling to score 19 runs from 18 balls and failed.Manager Yawar Saeed, after the match said that the players made a mistake as they did not ask for the change of the ball which they should have done.If the players in the heat of the situation failed to demand the change, the wiser men who were sitting outside should have sent in the message. One thinks that the team management was busy counting their gains. The PCB has an army of officers to run the show on fat salaries. If the team coach can be paid around Rs 2,40,000 for a month does he deserve a bonus too? Secondly one player who was not among the 15 was also paid the bonus of Rs 300,000. One has nothing against Faisal Iqbal he is a budding youngster. Now for no fault of his own this poor chap is being made target of criticism just because he is being pushed into the team when there is no place for him at the moment. One hopes Faisal does not meet the same fate which Shoaib Mohammad met as he was pushed into the Pakistan team rather prematurely by his supporters and when Shoaib really made a mark and deserved a place in the team he was ignored because of the prejudices and bias of the then cricket board and the selectors. If the PCB is really interested in grooming Faisal he should be kept in the cricket academy and given chance when there is an opportunity.Faisal has toured with the Pakistan team to Bangladesh, England, New Zealand, was a member of the team in the Asian Test Championship staged in Pakistan early this year, then was a member of the team in the off-shore Test series in Sharjah and again was a non playing member of the team in the just concluded Sharjah Cup.He has perhaps set a new Pakistan record of touring with the Pakistan team. One wonders will his career end as a tourist. His supporters should think over it and plan out his career. And lastly one would like the PCB to cut down it’s extravagant expenditure. The payment to the players, officials and non active members should correspond with the overall economic condition of the country. Cricketers are not rare commodities.Pakistan hockey team has won more laurels for the country but its players were never honored or given financial gains. Can one imagine that a win at Sharjah made everybody on the bandwagon richer by at least by Rs three lakh.Even a country like America, the world’s richest nation never showers it’s Olympic champions with such financial gains. How a poor country like ours can afford such a luxury is beyond imagination.President Pervez Musharraf who every time advocates for accountability should give a look at the PCB as the money being given to individuals is after all public money and instead of making individuals rich it should be spent on development of cricket in particular and sports in general. The autonomy given to the PCB is perhaps being misused and it should be stopped immediately.

Campbell's Diary: Previewing the series against India

Well the time has come for us to get stuck into our winter programme

Alistair Campbell05-Jun-2001Well the time has come for us to get stuck into our winter programme. On Thursday, in Bulawayo we start off our two Test Match Series against India, who on paper, and on recent performance look a very formidable unit.I read through their team sheet the other day, and the thought struck me that on their day, every member of their team could be a match winner. Not many other teams in the world could boast such strength and depth.India’s batting has always been its strength, and with players likeTendulkar, Dravid, Laxman, and Ganguly it is no surprise why. But with Srinath fit again, Zaheer Khan, Agarkar and of course Harbhajan Singh bowling for them, the balance of their side has never looked better. With John Wright at the helm they have gone from strength to strength. I feel it is going to take a lot of good gutsy cricket from us to get one over the Indians.Having said all of this, though, there still hangs over their heads the fact that their away record is nothing short of “a few unprintable four letter words”.They have been described as Tigers at home and Lambs abroad, and I am sure that they will be going all out to try and change this particular title as well as their record. This however could work in our favour, as they get to a stage where they start pushing too hard to achieve results, we will be there, hopefully, to cash in on any errors and mistakes they may make.It promises to be a fascinating contest, something I can’t wait to start and get my teeth into. I think people will enjoy the battle between the two teams no more so than the individual duels we are going to witness. Heath Streak against Sachin Tendulkar, and Andrew Flower against Harbhajan Singh promises to be a great contest between great players – Let the action begin!

Aston Villa: Fans react to Grealish update

Plenty of Aston Villa fans have been giving their thoughts to the latest update regarding Jack Grealish on social media.

The club captain, who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City this summer, has missed the last 11 games through injury.

He’ll once again be absent in Villa’s home clash with Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, however, manager Dean Smith did confirm that Grealish is now ‘out on the grass’ and ‘will start training with the group tomorrow’.

Grealish has been influential for Villa this season, contributing to 18 league goals. Smith’s side have struggled without their main creative spark, picking up 12 points from a possible 33.

It appears to be a positive step for the attacking midfielder, though, who last kicked a competitive ball for Villa back in February.

Villa fans react

The club shared the latest on Grealish on their official Twitter page on Friday morning, which, as to be expected, received plenty of interaction.

Here’s what some Villa supporters had to say on the 25-year-old.

É o absurdo do absurdo.

Bielsa provides Forshaw update

Marcelo Bielsa has said that Adam Forshaw remains an “important” player for Leeds United as he nears his return from a long-term injury absence.

The 29-year-old has suffered terrible misfortune in the injury department in recent seasons, not playing for the Whites since early on in the 2019/20 campaign. A serious hip problem has continually halted Forshaw’s progress, but he could now be set to return to the fold before the end of this season.

The midfielder, who earns £20,000 per week at Elland Road, has made 52 appearances for Leeds to date, but it should have been so many more.

Bielsa positive about Forshaw return

Speaking after Saturday’s 2-1 win at home to Sheffield United [via BBC’s Adam Pope on Twitter], Bielsa gave an update on Forshaw’s chances of playing again this season, saying:

“Even in a positive moment for 10 days, need to be measured in months. Hasn’t played for two seasons, to be able to play 90 minutes at a high competition, there’s a while to go. He is healthy and he has two months left of the season. Important player.”

Transfer Tavern take

It would be heartwarming to see Forshaw take to the field again in the final six weeks or so of the 2020/21 campaign following such a tough time in his career.

Whether he manages to return as the same player as before is up for debate, but giving him the opportunity to taste Premier League football would be just desserts for the work he has put in to regain match fitness and the torment he has endured over the past 18 months.

In other news, Leeds are reportedly ready to offer a Premier League youngster a pathway into the first team. Read more about it here.

Celtic: Harkin announcement due ‘very soon’

Life has arguably never been busier for Dermot Desmond at Celtic. The club’s majority shareholder is frantically trying to right the wrongs of this season and he’s even appeared in front of the media.

At the top of Desmond’s agenda is finding a new manager. Neil Lennon left his role around three weeks ago but we are still no closer to discovering his successor.

The 70-year-old admitted this week that a process was in place but they wouldn’t reveal what sort of boss they were looking for.

The businessman has also been busy revamping the club’s hierarchy. Celtic are set to welcome Dominic McKay as the new CEO this summer when Peter Lawwell retires.

He could also be followed out the door by not only a number of the playing staff, but also Nick Hammond, the man in charge of the Hoops’ recruitment.

That’s because a brand new director of football role has been opened up by Celtic. It has been a meticulous process to find one but according to Football Insider, a deal to bring Manchester City’s Fergal Harkin to Paradise is 90% done.

Indeed, he could be unveiled in the not too distant future if you believe the words of Hoops podcaster Paul John Dykes. Speaking this week, he said: “Fergal Harkin seems to be a shoo-in. He seems to be the guy that’s in as director of football. And we would expect a director of football to be announced first.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-boupendza-mcgeady-marsch-mccarthy” title=”Latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

Dykes added: “So, we’ve got the new CEO; we know that he’s going to be in place – Dominic McKay. I would expect pretty soon the announcement that Fergal Harkin is going to be the director of football.”

This should be music to the ears of Desmond, a man that’s had plenty on his plate. Only this week he was questioned over his status at the club.

A quick-fire answer was provided; he wouldn’t be selling his shares. That response should have been obvious considering the empire he’s currently building at Parkhead.

With a new director of football through the door, it will give the hierarchy at Celtic a greater opportunity to focus on finding their new manager. It could even lead to Harkin himself having a large say in who walks through the door.

After a season where the Bhoys relinquished their grasp on the SPFL, having more eyes on proceedings is certainly no bad idea.

To get one appointment finally sorted will come as a big relief to Desmond.

AND in other news, Celtic star could leave after worrying phone calls emerge, Desmond must be scared…

Newcastle confirm Wilson injury blow

Steve Bruce has been left facing a huge conundrum against Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday with a return for Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson considered unlikely.

The Toon boss confirmed that Wilson remains a doubt for this weekend’s Premier League affair at St James’ Park when speaking to the media on Friday, although he voiced hope in having Allan Saint-Maximin back.

Wilson has missed Newcastle’s last six fixtures after sustaining a deep hamstring tear during February’s 3-2 win over Southampton, which forced the £20m summer signing from Bournemouth out of the game late in the first half.

Newcastle are yet to win a top-flight fixture without Wilson since his arrival on Tyneside in September, with Bruce’s men succumbing to five defeats and three draws.

The Toon had landed a potential boost over the international break when Wilson hinted at a return on social media, after Bruce alluded to having the 10-goal centre-forward back available to face Tottenham. Those hopes have now been dashed, and Newcastle will likely host Spurs on Sunday without their top scorer to call on once again.

“I wouldn’t have thought so, no,” Bruce said in relation to Wilson returning to selection at home to Jose Mourinho’s north Londoners.

“He [Saint-Maximin] could be, yeah. We’ve still got two days to train, today and tomorrow, but he came through a big training session 48 hours ago, so we hope he’s a bit more advanced than Callum is. We hope he can play some part.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/the-latest-newcastle-news%2c-gossip-and-views” title=”The latest Newcastle news, gossip and views!”]

Despite missing Newcastle’s last six Premier League fixtures and two earlier in the campaign, Wilson remains atop the scoring charts at St James’ Park with more than double the tally of second-ranked Miguel Almiron (4) and with nine goals more than any other striker.

Being without Wilson on Sunday will leave Bruce facing a huge conundrum over his attacking options, with ex-Magpies midfielder Rob Lee fearful of the consequences.

“If you haven’t got someone who’s a natural goalscorer scoring goals, you’re in trouble, you’re in trouble,” Lee exclusively told Football FanCast. “You look at all the teams down there and none of them have a natural goalscorer, none of them.

“They [the teams that are relegated] never do. Throughout the years, they never have a natural goalscorer. We actually have one, but he’s injured and it seems the whole of our team is based around him and how he plays. And we haven’t got a replacement and then we don’t have any players from midfield [who can score].”

Joelinton, Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle have each scored one goal in the Premier League this term, but neither have found the back of the net since Wilson’s injury.

Bruce will be well aware that Newcastle cannot afford to drop many more points with the northeast outfit only two points clear of the relegation zone, but they will likely struggle to steer the ship away from trouble while Wilson remains sidelined.

Gabby Agbonlahor slammed Joelinton following the Toon’s dismal 3-0 defeat to relegation rivals Brighton & Hove Albion prior to the international break, claiming that the Brazilian “hasn’t turned up all season” and is still not delivering in the black and white stripes.

However, Bruce has been pleased with Joelinton’s recent efforts, saying that the 24-year-old had his best game for the club against Aston Villa last month, having turned in a “terrific” performance.

Alas, no goals in 14 Premier League games raises question marks over Joelinton’s ability to lead the line against Tottenham, when Newcastle will likely be in trouble again unless they can find someone to fill Wilson’s goalscoring void.

AND in other news, Newcastle could save at least £8.5m by unleashing a £38k-p/w “life-saver” next season…
