Liverpool’s €15m transfer conundrum & Reds braced for Juve bid – Best of LFC

Well according to Wigan chairman Dave Whelan he’ll waving goodbye to boss Roberto Martinez in the very near future. Supposedly he is the man Fenway Sports Group want to replace Kenny Dalglish in the Liverpool dugout. Hands up Kopites if he was your first choice? From Andre Villas-Boas to Brendan Rodgers to Fabio Capello to Rafa Benitez the Latic’s boss has been handpicked by owner John W. Henry and chairman Tom Werner to fill the shoes of Dalglish following his dismissal last week. The objective for Martinez is to restore the Reds back to the top-four and bring Champions League football back to Anfield. It will be a tall order for a manager who’s best finish in three seasons at the DW Stadium is 15th. The 41-year-old’s preference for fluid, passing football is attractive on the eye and what he achieved on a meagre budget at Wigan has won him many admirers. With substantially more funds at Liverpool he will have the opportunity to purchase a higher quality of player that will suit his favoured system. More importantly though FSG will need to give him time to implement his ideals and mould the team to his specifications…should he be appointed of course!

This week on FFC will a Dutch legend be taking a job upstairs at Anfield and will the past treatment of previous managers come back to haunt FSG as they search for a new number one?

Liverpool summmer 2012 transfer preview

FIVE wonderkid targets for Manchester United

Manchester United have been surprisingly quiet thus far into the summer window; alarmingly quiet for some. David Moyes is yet to really signal his arrival as the new manager, while failed bids for Cesc Fabregas and an apparent lack of interest in Thiago can only add to the frustration.

But, big-name signings can come in the form of young talents from across Europe. United have regularly been linked with some of the leading names in football, and there is no reason why any of them wouldn’t want to further their education at Old Trafford.

United have the pulling power, the financial backing and the history of taking youngsters to the next level. Picking one or two from the myriad of young talents currently available in Europe would be a perfect marker for Moyes’ intent at the club.

Tottenham reportedly set for busy summer

A major Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim has emerged this week regarding what they want to do in July…

What’s the talk?

Alasdair Gold has provided an update on the club’s plans for the upcoming window and the positions that they want to strengthen in ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

He wrote in his Football London Q&A: “There’s been a lot of talk about Tottenham having to spend this summer in order to convince both Conte and Kane of their ambition, while Fabio Paratici also likes a free transfer. I think Spurs will be pretty busy this summer.

“They need to be. In terms of positions, at this point they want a new striker, a right wing-back, a left-sided centre-back and another creative player. Anyone who leaves will have to be replaced as well. Like I say, it has to be a busy one.”

Excitement

Spurs fans will surely be excited by this news as it suggests that they have plenty to look forward to in the upcoming window.

Gold has claimed that they want at least four new additions and that does not take into account any players they will sell and replace over the course of the summer. This means that the supporters can expect to see plenty of outgoings and incomings, which should delight them as it brings with it the prospect of Antonio Conte’s squad being bolstered with additional quality.

The fans will be particularly excited by this claim after the impressive work by Fabio Paratici in the January transfer window. He brought in Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus and both players have caught the eye since making their respective moves.

Kulusevski has produced two goals and one assist in five Premier League games whilst averaging an impressive SofaScore rating of 7.20. All three of his direct goal contributions have come in his last three appearances as he is showing that he has the quality to make an impact at this level.

Bentancur, meanwhile, has been a solid presence in the middle of the park. He has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.88 in his four league outings, making 2.8 tackles and interceptions per game and completing 84% of his attempted passes.

If Tottenham can replicate these successes four or five more times in the summer window then it could be a terrific few months for the fans to enjoy. This is why they will be delighted by the prospect of Paratici looking to add four or more new signings to the squad.

Leeds: Alex McLeish makes Kalvin Phillips claim

Former top flight manager Alex McLeish has made a claim regarding Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Marsch’s first comments

New Whites manager Jesse Marsch admitted before his first game in charge of the club that he wanted Phillips to take on a ‘bigger role’ at Thorp Arch, describing it as ‘massively important’.

The 26-year-old, who Aston Villa are monitoring ahead of a possible summer swoop, has been out injured since December but is making good progress after undergoing hamstring surgery.

Phillips has missed the last 12 Premier League games, with Leeds losing nine of those, leaving them just two points clear of the relegation zone.

The Latest: McLeish’s comments

McLeish, who contributes for BBC Radio 5 Live, was asked by Football Insider what a ‘bigger role’ could mean.

“Phillips was playing at an exceptionally high standard before his injury. What else they can get out of him I don’t know.

“Is he a talker? Is he a leader behind the scenes? Maybe he wants him to add some little things.

“One thing I can tell you is that he is not talking about footballing reasons. It will be a mentality thing.

“Perhaps he wants him to be more vociferous with the players. Some players are quiet these days.

“I’m not sure exactly what Jesse means. One thing is for sure, it is clear Phillips has been badly missed. It was a world of pain for Bielsa when he was missing those players.”

The Verdict: Return needed

Leeds need their best players available for the final months of the season and look set to have Phillips available very soon after the club’s teasing official post of the midfielder in action at Thorp Arch on Wednesday.

Patrick Bamford is another who has been sorely missed in recent months, with Marsch set to call upon the forward against Aston Villa and Norwich.

The likes of Phillips and Bamford could prove key in regards to the club’s hopes of survival, and a ‘bigger role’ at Elland Road will more than likely follow for the midfielder if he stars over the coming months.

In other news: Phil Hay drops huge Leeds news from Thorp Arch before Villa.

Newcastle may consider Bernd Leno

Newcastle United could make an opportunistic move for Arsenal’s Bernd Leno, Pete O’Rourke has told GiveMeSport.

The lowdown

The German started the season as Mikel Arteta’s number one, getting the nod for the Gunners’ first three Premier League matches of the campaign.

However, his only minutes since then have come in the cup competitions, with August signing Aaron Ramsdale establishing himself as first choice. In that time, the north Londoners have gone from bottom of the table to fourth, on course for a return to the Champions League from next term.

Arsenal have already signed a new goalkeeper in Matt Turner from MLS outfit New England Revolution ahead of the 2022/23 season, and he could potentially replace the 30-year-old as Ramsdale’s deputy. With less than 18 months now remaining on his contract, Leno is valued at £14.4m by Transfermarkt.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle were ‘interested’ in January but couldn’t reach an agreement, adding that the player is ‘gonna leave’ when the summer transfer window opens.

The latest

O’Rourke believes that Leno will be assessing potential routes out of the Emirates Stadium, which may duly alert Newcastle.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “I think that at Arsenal he’s well down the pecking order behind Aaron Ramsdale, so I think Leno would be interested in a move away from the Emirates Stadium, so that might be something they look at.”

The verdict

Do Newcastle need an upgrade on Martin Dubravka? Perhaps not.

Data from FBRef shows that the Slovakian has the third-best shot-stopping record in the Premier League this season, ‘preventing’ 4.7 goals (only Manchester United’s David de Gea and Wolves’ Jose Sa have performed better in that regard).

While Leno, who finished second in Arsenal’s player of the season vote in 2019/20, could be a strong signing, it perhaps isn’t a necessary one for the Magpies. Indeed, the German goalkeeper might be wary of moving to St James’ Park given the strength of competition that Dubravka would provide.

In other news, Newcastle are eyeing up a summer move for this Premier League midfielder

Spurs: Report drops big Pochettino claim

As per Football Insider, there has been a significant update involving Tottenham Hotspur and former fan favourite Mauricio Pochettino.

The Lowdown: Gaining traction?

Paris-Saint Germain’s failure to reach the Champions League quarter-finals has reportedly pushed him further towards the Parc des Princes exit door.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Pochettino’s future as manager of the Ligue 1 giants is in major doubt ahead of the summer, coming amid recent speculation surrounding a get-out-early clause in Antonio Conte’s contract at Tottenham.

Calciomercato claimed that Spurs’ head coach is flirting with the idea of activating that clause, which would allow him to leave at the end of this season, even though his contract actually expires in 2023.

PSG have apparently made contact with Conte as they eye replacements for Pochettino, and according to Football Insider, the latter is now eyeing a move back to north London.

The Latest: Report makes major Pochettinon claim…

The report claimed Pochettino ‘would jump at the chance’ to rejoin Spurs this summer, with the Argentine also ‘expected to leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season’.

Football Insider added that a source close to the 50-year-old has revealed that he would ‘love’ a fairytale comeback to N17.

The Verdict: Big news…

Amid the Calciomercato development involving Conte, it appears that Pochettino’s emerging willingness to make a return to Tottenham couldn’t have come at a better time.

The Italian has consistently dropped hints that he could leave the Lilywhites if chairman Daniel Levy doesn’t share the 52-year-old’s ambition for the club.

Pochettino is arguably the best alternative to Conte when taking into account his Premier League managerial experience and familiarity behind the scenes at Spurs, with former Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes also calling him a ‘football genius’.

The Telegraph reported that Levy has shortlisted his former manager as a number one managerial target if Conte were to leave, so this update could mean that Spurs would have no problem reaching an agreement for PSG’s £129,000-per-week boss.

Expert makes big double Leeds claim

Leeds United pair Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha could both stay put at Elland Road this summer, according to transfer expert Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Phillips and Raphinha on the move?

There has been plenty of speculation regarding the future of both Phillips and Raphinha in recent weeks, with the duo arguably the most important players at the club.

With Leeds floundering towards the bottom of the Premier League, it could be that both eye up moves elsewhere, in order to continue their career trajectories.

Raphinha has been strongly linked to Bayern Munich in the past and more recently Barcelona, while Phillips is reportedly a target for Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa.

That being said, a key update has now emerged that could excite Whites supporters.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The Latest: Jones makes big claim

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones said that there is a feeling that Phillips and Raphinha could both remain at Leeds beyond the summer, especially the former:

“Around Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips, obviously all the talk has been about where are they going to end up? But the latest update is that, at this point, there is a possibility that they will stay, particularly Kalvin Phillips.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-39/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Too good to be true?

The thought of the Leeds favourites both staying put is almost too good to be true, with the Whites’ Premier League status surely vital to that.

Should Jesse Marsch’s side be relegated, it is so difficult to imagine Phillips and even more so Raphinha being willing to play in the Championship, even though they have shown loyalty to this point.

Phillips staying is certainly easier to envisage, given he is a boyhood fan, but Raphinha could feel it is time for a step up and look to join a Champions League-playing team. If they don’t leave, however, their legends will only be further enhanced at Elland Road.

In other news, Leeds are reportedly keen on signing one player – find out who it is here.

Leeds in pole position to sign Aaronson

Leeds United have already begun pre-summer talks to sign January target Brenden Aaronson in the next transfer window, according to a fresh transfer claim.

The Lowdown: Aaronson a primary target

No player has been more strongly linked with a move to Elland Road in recent months than Aaronson, having initially emerged as a January target.

While the 21-year-old remained at RB Salzburg during the last window, Leeds’ interest in him hasn’t gone away after two separate bids in the winter window, with constant reports tipping him to join the Jesse Marsch revolution.

Now, a new update suggests Aaronson could indeed join the Whites in the coming months.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The Latest: Leeds in pole position

According to Football Insider, a recruitment source has informed them of a ‘major update’ – the midfielder is Victor Orta’s ‘number one priority’ this summer and talks are already underway to sign him.

A deal worth between £21million and £25million is mooted, with the player apparently keen to join.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-40/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Tick all the boxes

There is an inevitability about some signings and that seems to be the case with Aaronson, with so much pointing towards him becoming a Leeds player.

Perhaps most significantly, he played under Marsch at Salzburg, meaning the Whites boss knows all about his qualities, in terms of fitting into his system at Elland Road.

Aaronson is also exactly the type of midfielder Leeds crave too, with a lack of guile in a No.10 role this season often leading to a decreased goal threat in attack, especially with Patrick Bamford so often sidelined through injury.

In February, the USA starlet became the youngster player since Lionel Messi to create five chances in a Champions League knockout game.

He and the Whites feel like a match made in heaven, and if they missed out on signing him now, it would be a big blow to Marsch and his plans, with Premier League survival perhaps paramount in that respect.

Everton now targeting January move to sign £94,000-a-week striker for Moyes

Everton have now reportedly set their sights on signing a Serie A striker who is prioritising a move to the Premier League in 2026.

Moyes will be "delighted" to get "right players" in January

It’s a big month for the Toffees. David Moyes’ side have already set up the foundations in the first-half of the season, showing plenty of promise, but desperately need that added bit of quality to take that next step. The January transfer window can provide that if The Friedkin Group spent correctly.

Having his say on the winter window, Moyes told reporters that he’ll only be looking for the “right players” – saying: “I have always said that I don’t think we will be doing a lot of business in January. If we find some players, we will be delighted to do it. The CEO will be as well and the owners too.

“It’s more to do with trying to have a plan. The ownership wants us to have a plan and prepare in a certain fashion. I don’t think it will be coming up with a lot of quick fixes. That’s the way it’s moving.”

The veteran manager also had his say on whether he needs a new striker, telling reporters: “Maybe I like to bring other things in as well if I could. We don’t’ want to get everybody’s hopes up. There is an awful lot of speculation. I sort of laugh at it a little bit.”

Whether Moyes simply has a good poker face remains to be seen, but the rumours are indeed coming thick and fast. Everton have already been linked with the likes of Evan Ferguson and are now reportedly interested in a Serie A star.

According to reports in Spain, Everton are now targeting a move to sign Artem Dovbyk from AS Roma in the January transfer window.

Everton targeting Artem Dovbyk move

The Roma forward has struggled since arriving and has looked destined for an exit for some time. Now, he’s reportedly prioritising a Premier League switch amid interest from Sunderland, Everton and West Ham United.

Everton now targeting move to sign "unbelievable" Coleman heir who’s impressed scouts

The Toffees could finally replace Coleman.

ByTom Cunningham

That said, he won’t exactly come cheap. As things stand, Dovbyk reportedly earns around £94,000-a-week in Italy, which would instantly make him Everton’s sixth highest-earning player above Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Whether a player who’s scored just twice all season is worth that salary is the question that Everton must ask themselves.

The last thing that the Toffees need is another struggling striker and the stats suggest that Dovbyk would give Moyes exactly that in the January transfer window.

The veteran boss reiterated that he’s looking for the right players next month rather trying to force through any reinforcements. With that being the case, they could look elsewhere rather than Dovbyk when the winter window does swing open.

Shades of Mane: Liverpool considering signing £70m PL striker

There have been a lot of bumps in the road for Liverpool this season, but there has been some festive cheer as of late at Anfield.

Indeed, Arne Slot’s men haven’t tasted defeat since a sobering 4-1 Champions League humiliation at the hands of PSV Eindhoven, with the Reds showing plenty of fight and quality to turn around their once sticky situation.

Hugo Ekitike, in particular, has shone in recent Premier League wins over Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur, with three goals collected, seeing Match of the Day pundit Shay Given hail him as the “real deal” in attack.

Liverpool won’t be content, though, with the personnel making up their forward positions, as Alexander Isak now looks set for a lengthy absence on the sidelines, resulting in a new striker target appearing on the Reds’ shopping list…

Liverpool eye up move for £70m striker

It has now been revealed that Isak will be out for several months with a serious injury he sustained against Spurs, as his nightmare start on Merseyside only gets worse.

Losing the £125m attacker for a significant period of time means Liverpool will surely have to go out in January to recruit a fresh body up top, with the top-flight’s second top scorer in Brentford’s Igor Thiago reportedly catching their eye.

A report from Caught Offside has revealed that Slot’s reigning champions are monitoring Thiago as they go about chasing after attacking reinforcements, with Antoine Semenyo also still on their radar despite the likelihood being he signs for Manchester City.

Brentford are noted as being hesitant to part ways with one of their main stars mid-way through a season, though, with an audacious £70m price tag now above the former Club Brugge man’s head.

Still, this could be the price Liverpool have to fork out if they want to sign one of the division’s most in-form forwards, with the Reds not regretting their pursuit of Sadio Mane one bit back in 2016, having poached the now Al-Nassr forward from lower down the division in Southampton, only to mould him into a modern-day legend.

How Thiago can be Slot's own Mane

Mane cost a high £36m to obtain in the summer of 2016, having stood out as a lively attacker for the Saints, much like Thiago is now showing off at the G-Tech Community Stadium.

With hindsight on side, Mane was only just getting started in the Premier League at St. Mary’s, with 25 goals and ten assists from 75 appearances on the South Coast, enough to catch Liverpool’s eye.

He would then go on to blow these numbers out of the water at Anfield, with the Senegal attacker reaching a stunning 120 goals and 46 assists for Liverpool, before his sensational journey ran out on Merseyside in 2022.

Still, his former Reds manager Jurgen Klopp would be right in his assessment that the winger is one of “Liverpool’s greatest ever players”, having fired home some crucial goals to lift the FA Cup, Champions League, and Premier League during his glittering stay.

During the title-winning season of 2019/20 alone, Mane would chip in with a weighty 18 league strikes, as he was further noted as being a “world-class” finisher by the German, and deserving of being in the “same bracket” as the division’s best-ever strikers when reaching a century of Anfield goals, by ex-Liverpool teammate Georginio Wijnaldum.

Of course, Thiago, right now, is some way off being this revered in the Premier League but like Mane did lower down the top-flight, he’s made one hell of an impact.

But with a devastating 11 league goals picked up this season already for Keith Andrew’s Bees, the “phenomenal” marksman – as he has been rightly praised by his manager – is showing why he is deserving of such a bumper £70m move, to try and replicate Mane’s jaw-dropping feats.

He even scooped up November’s Player of the Month accolade for the entire league, with his consistent “magnificent” performances for the West London outfit – as Andrews has also waxed lyrical – surely making him hungry for a step-up, with Mane not looking back whatsoever when deserting Southampton all those years ago.

Stepping up to the mark for Brentford this season, after both Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa left the building in quick succession, also shows off a striker who can thrive under pressure, as Thiago perhaps gets a Mane-style big break in January if Liverpool come in for his services.
