Canterbury maintain top ranking with comfortable win

ScorecardDean Brownlie scored fifties in both innings for Canterbury•Getty Images

Canterbury maintained their position at the top of the table with a six-wicket win over Northern Districts. The victory, their third in four matches, took them to 56 points, 10 clear of second-placed Wellington.Northern Districts were bundled out for 176 in the first innings, after being put in to bat. Pacers Matt Henry and Shanan Stewart led Canterbury’s attack, picking up three wickets apiece, while the only resistance from the batting side came in the form of an 84-run stand between Northern Districts captain Daniel Flynn and Anton Devcich.Canterbury’s reply looked shaky at 152 for 7, but their captain Andrew Ellis rescued the innings with a knock of 142, his second successive first-class ton. Dean Brownlie chipped in with 63 while pacer Logan van Beek scored his maiden first-class fifty, adding 135 runs for the eighth wicket with Ellis. Canterbury were eventually dismissed for 382 with a lead of 206.Daryl Mitchell’s second first-class hundred led Northern Districts’ improved second-innings showing. A late-order rally led by Jono Boult helped the side reach 364 in spite of the loss of quick wickets in the middle, but they could only set Canterbury a target of 159.Canterbury lost both their openers with the score on 15 before Brownlie thwarted the opposition once again, scoring 64 to guide the side to a win.
ScorecardAn all-round performance from Wellington boosted the side to an eight-wicket win over Otago in Invercargill, helping them climb to second place in the league standings with 46 points.Michael Pollard and Wellington captain, James Franklin, struck centuries to lead the side to 487 in response to Otago’s first-innings score of 339. The pair shared a 238-run fourth-wicket stand, helping Wellington overhaul Otago’s score before James Neesham’s five-for and a four-wicket haul from Sam Wells restricted the batting side’s lead to 148.The Wellington bowlers, led by offspinner Jeetan Patel, then chipped away at the Otago line-up. Aaron Redmond, Neil Broom and Michael Bracewell made useful contributions, and Neesham smashed a 47-ball 60 – his second fifty of the game – but the Wellington bowlers didn’t allow partnerships to flourish and restricted Otago to 229. Patel finished with 4 for 75, while pacer Andy McKay took three wickets.Wellington achieved the target of 82 in just 13.1 overs, losing only the openers in the process.Earlier, fifties from Jesse Ryder, Neesham and Broom had helped Otago post 339 after they opted to bat. Mark Gillespie and Brent Arnel were the most successful bowlers for Wellington in the first innings, taking three wickets each.
ScorecardUnbeaten fifties from Tim McIntosh and Bruce Martin helped Auckland salvage a draw against Central Districts in Napier.Set a steep target of 349, Auckland were struggling at 73 for 6 before an unbeaten 101-run, seventh-wicket stand between Martin and McIntosh took the side to safety. McIntosh played for time, taking 177 balls to score 50, while Martin’s sixth first-class fifty came in 106 balls. Both teams amassed big totals in their respective first innings. Peter Trego’s 10th first-class hundred and fifties from Jamie How, Kruger van Wyk and Ben Wheeler boosted Central Districts to 467.Martin Guptill’s 185 held Auckland’s reply together, even as the other batsmen – save for Colin Munro who scored 50 – failed to post substantial scores. Guptill was the last wicket to fall for Auckland and his eighth first-class hundred took the side to 351. Martin and Auckland pacer Michael Bates then picked up eight wickets between them to keep Central Districts to 232. The match between the last-placed teams in the league finished with Canterbury taking away eight points, while Auckland earned seven.

Dhoni praises Kohli, youngsters

MS Dhoni, the India captain, said he was happy with the experience gained by younger players in the series against Zimbabwe and on India A’s ongoing tour of South Africa

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Aug-2013MS Dhoni, the India captain, said he was happy with the experience gained by the younger players in the series against Zimbabwe and on India A’s ongoing tour of South Africa. According to Dhoni, these performances will hold India in good stead when the team embarks on their tour of South Africa in late November.”The exposure the boys are getting in Zimbabwe and South Africa will help them in the long run,” Dhoni said. “It will help them when they take on a quality opposition like South Africa later this year. They have done really well and the experience will help them in adjusting to conditions better.”India swept Zimbabwe 5-0 in their ODI tour, while India A took the the one-day tri-series, beating Australia A in the final. India A are also playing two unofficial Tests against South Africa A and have dominated the first game so far.Dhoni praised stand-in captain, Virat Kohli for his leadership during the Zimbabwe tour: “I think Virat did well in Zimbabwe. He is an expressive guy and that is important. He has changed a lot in the last one year and his approach is positive. His batting performance as captain is a good sign for Indian cricket.”Focusing on Australia’s upcoming ODI tour, which begins on October 10, Dhoni felt that the toss would be vital in dictating the outcome of the series, given that all the matches will be played into the night. “Around that time there will be a lot of dew, so it will be vital to win the toss. We will still try to give our best in the series,” he said. With former India captains Kapil Dev and Sourav Ganguly presenting their greatest Indian ODI and Test teams recently, Dhoni felt that such an exercise was futile because the game had evolved over the years: “I don’t think I will ever make my all-time greatest India team. You cannot compare one era with another as they will be different.”Whether a player has played one match or a hundred, we should give him respect for what he has achieved and leave it at that. It is like comparing two-stroke bikes with four-stroke. I don’t think you will get a better product by mixing them.”

Paid price for being over keen – McCullum

New Zealand paid the price for trying to be too aggressive without earning the right to, in the first Twenty20 in Durban, according to their new captain Brendon McCullum

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Dec-2012New Zealand paid the price for trying to be too aggressive without earning the right to, in the first Twenty20 international in Durban, according to their new captain Brendon McCullum. The visitors collapsed for 86 and were beaten by eight wickets in the opening fixture of their tour of South Africa.”We obviously wanted to be aggressive today, and we wanted to put South Africa under pressure right from the get-go, but we learned a lot about earning the right to do so first,” McCullum said after the game. “Ensure that you stick to your fundamentals, and first and foremost give yourselves that opportunity to be able to be aggressive. I think one thing we’ll definitely take out of this game is that we were just a little over-keen to try and put some pressure on South Africa from the outset.”We 100% believe that we can win the next game, we’ve just got to fine tune a couple of areas. I can’t fault people for being overly keen to want to get into a series. It’s just that we didn’t quite earn the right to be as aggressive as we wanted to be and put South Africa under pressure. And we’ll ensure that in 48 hours time, we’ll definitely put up a much better performance …”After choosing to bat at Kingsmead, New Zealand had slumped to 36 for 6 by the ninth over, with only Colin Munro making it to double figures among the top-seven batsmen. Munro was one of four debutants New Zealand included in their XI. Corey Anderson, Jimmy Neesham and Mitchell McClenaghan were the others.”It was a bit two-paced,” McCullum said of the pitch. “I think some balls were keeping a little low, especially the cross-seamers were keeping a little bit low, and some kicked a little bit … We just played too many out-shots early on when we weren’t quite set. We didn’t get the pace of the wicket, so that’s something we can definitely learn from.”Faf du Plessis, the South Africa captain, said his team had learned from the mistakes New Zealand’s batsmen made. South Africa achieved the target in the 13th over, with du Plessis top-scoring with an unbeaten 38 at No. 3. South Africa also had three debutants – Henry Davids, Chris Morris and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock – and du Plessis was pleased with the attitude of the new-look Twenty20 side.”We put a lot of emphasis on that we’re a young side, so we want to have a lot of energy and we want to have a good presence,” du Plessis said. “That’s what I was telling the guys, we’ve done an excellent job of doing that. He [Quinton de Kock] surprised me. As a young guy coming in, you’d think that he’d be a little bit more nervous but he made it look easy. That’s what we strive for as a team, and so he did very well.”South Africa and New Zealand will play the second Twenty20 international in East London on December 23.
