Newcastle want Anthony Martial

A number of Manchester United fans have been left buzzing as transfer news emerged on Anthony Martial.

As per Stretty News, Newcastle United have now made an enquiry about the France international after their takeover by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium. However, there are also a number of clubs from Spain in the mix for his signature.

With Cristiano Ronaldo arriving at Old Trafford, Martial has seen himself falling down the pecking order, with the likes of Edinson Cavani, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood also options for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer up top.

He has only managed to score one goal and has provided no assists in seven games over all competitions so far this season (Transfermarkt), and at 25 years of age, the Red Devils could get a decent fee for him, especially with the riches that the Magpies now have at their disposal.

Newcastle: Ryder shares Bruce suspicion

Lee Ryder reckons that Newcastle United officials behind the scenes know ‘deep down’ that their poor performances under Steve Bruce ‘can’t go on much longer’.

The lowdown

As the Premier League season pauses for the second international break, Newcastle find themselves second from bottom in the table.

They have failed to win any of their first seven matches, with only their three draws keeping them above Norwich City.

What’s more, the stats suggest that Newcastle fully deserve to be in the relegation zone. When you go by expected goals for and against, they should be 18th (via Understat).

Despite these struggles, the club has firmly backed the manager. The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards reported at the end of last month that ‘his job is not under threat and is unlikely to be any time soon’.

By contrast, a Chronicle Live survey in September found that a whopping 95 per cent of Newcastle fans are in favour of a managerial change.

The latest

In a fan Q & A for The Chronicle, Ryder was asked whether Bruce was ‘refusing to resign’ because he fears he won’t get another chance at the top level, or whether it was down to finances.

He acknowledged that it could be Bruce’s ‘last job’ in the Premier League, but stressed that compensation is a ‘big factor’.

If he’s sacked, he’s entitled to a ‘seven-figure pay-out’, but he waives that right if he resigns.

However, Ryder adds: “I think deep down they know this can’t go on for much longer unless the team REALLY (his emphasis) pick up after the break.”

The verdict

Are Newcastle’s fixtures conducive to an upturn in form? Not particularly. Tottenham Hotspur are next up, and then they travel to an impressive Crystal Palace led by Patrick Vieira.

After that, it’s title contenders Chelsea and early high-flyers Brighton and Brentford.

If Ryder is right about the true feelings of the decision-makers behind closed doors, then, perhaps the clock is ticking for Bruce.

In other news, could this be a potential replacement for Bruce?

Johnson must unleash Huggins vs Cheltenham

While Lee Johnson’s high-flying Sunderland side should not have too much trouble securing three points in the visit of mid-table Cheltenham Town on Tuesday evening, a number of injuries and fitness worries in the Black Cats squad could be something of a cause for concern for the 40-year-old manager.

Indeed, with both left-back Dennis Cirkin and centre-back Callum Doyle being assessed before the fixture due to their respective knocks, while Lynden Gooch is also sidelined for the clash as the winger is yet to recover from a hamstring injury, Johnson will have a number of tough calls to make in the build-up to the match.

Johnson must unleash Huggins

Regarding the potential absence of Cirkin in particular, although it will undoubtedly come as a blow to the Mackems manager to lose a player who has highly impressed since his summer move from Tottenham Hotspur, the 19-year-old’s unavailability could be something of an opportunity for Sunderland, as it presents an opening for another exciting youngster to get some much-needed game time.

Indeed, following his own summer switch from Leeds United, 20-year-old Niall Huggins has so far made just one appearance in League One, coming on for the injured Cirkin in the club’s 1-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers last weekend.

And, despite naturally being a right-back, the £180k-rated man turned in an extremely solid performance on the opposite flank in the win over the Trotters, blocking one shot, making three interceptions, making one tackle and winning one duel over the course of his 24 minutes on the pitch – seeing him earn a very respectable SofaScore match rating of 6.9.

The defender also impressed in the Black Cats’ 2-0 Carabao Cup victory against Wigan Athletic last week, providing one assist and creating one big chance for his teammates, as well as making one interception, one tackle and one clearance – with these returns seeing the player Ian Harte dubbed a “fantastic” talent receive a SofaScore match rating of 7.3.

As such, should Cirkin indeed miss out on Tuesday evening, it would appear highly advisable for Johnson to unleash Huggins against the Robins, as the Leeds loanee clearly has the ability to be something of a game-changer for the promotion hopefuls.

Report sheds light on signing of Quina

A report has shed further light on Fulham’s deadline day deal to bring Domingos Quina to Craven Cottage.

What’s the talk?

According to The Athletic, Marco Silva’s side fought off competition from the likes of Southampton, LOSC Lille, Swansea City, AFC Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest in order to land the 21-year-old on the final day of the summer transfer window – with the Cottagers securing a season-long loan deal for the central midfielder, while also holding the option to purchase the Portugal U21 international next summer.

Major coup

Considering the sheer amount of potential Quina quite clearly possesses, the fact that Silva managed to fight off what appeared to be some extremely strong competition for the signing of the youngster this summer represents something of a real coup for the Championship side.

Indeed, with both Real Madrid and Barcelona having enquired about signing the 21-year-old prior to his move from West Ham United to Watford back in 2018, the £2.7m-rated man is a player who boasts impressive positional versatility – having been deployed at left-back, defensive midfield, left midfield, central midfield, right midfield, left-wing, right-wing and at centre forward during his time with the Hornets – the ability to score a variety of goals from almost any position around the penalty area and incredible athleticism – particularly his speed.

As such, while it may take a little while for the man Slaven Billic dubbed a “talented” player to establish himself as a first-team regular under Silva, having only played a handful of games over the past few seasons, it would undoubtedly appear as if the youngster could go on to play a key role for Fulham in the not too distant future, with his signing looking to be a very exciting one indeed.

Balogun was Rangers’ shining light v Lyon

Rangers’ six-game unbeaten run in all competitions came crashing to an end as they lost 2-0 to Ligue 1 side Lyon on Thursday night in the Europa League.

Steven Gerrard’s side were unable to pick up their first points of the group stage as a stunning strike from Toto Ekambi and an own goal from James Tavernier sealed the win for the French outfit at Ibrox.

Despite the defeat, there were some green shoots of potential in the performance, with a few players impressing throughout the match. One player who was a shining light for Gerrard was central defender Leon Balogun, who caught the eye at the back.

The centre-back was paired alongside Connor Goldson and was excellent throughout. He could do nothing about either of the goals, with John Lundstram allowing Ekambi to beat him too easily for the first and the second coming when Goldson’s block ricocheted off Tavernier and rolled into an empty net.

Defensively, Balogun was excellent. As per SofaScore, he won seven of his 11 duels on the pitch, making two clearances, two interceptions and two tackles. He also put in two blocks to show off his superb positioning and bravery to get in the way of the ball and prevent Allan McGregor from needing to make a save.

This shows that he was able to answer the majority of the questions Lyon posed of him. He showcased his strong defending and proved that he is able to perform at Europa League level, which will delight Gerrard as the manager will now know that he can rely upon the Nigerian for the rest of the group stage if needed.

The Rangers beast was also impressive on the ball. As per SofaScore, he had 61 touches and completed 87% of his attempted passes, including four of his eight longer pass attempts. The experienced 33-year-old was also successful with one of his two dribble attempts and won two free-kicks for the Gers, showing his nous to relieve pressure on his team.

This shows that he was competent on the ball to go along with his stout defending at the back. He put in an all-around top-class performance at centre-back for Rangers and was a shining light in an otherwise disappointing night for the Gers.

Final one-dayer washed out

The final one-day international between South Africa and Bangladesh at East London has been washed out

The final one-day international between South Africa and Bangladesh at East London has been washed out. The weather had been poor through the night and there was no let-up during the morning ahead of the day/night encounter, leaving the umpires no option but to abandon the game an hour before the start. It means South Africa take the series 2-0 and hold onto second place in the one-day rankings as the focus now shifts to the two-Test series which begins in Bloemfontein next week. South Africa start as strong favourites and should have far too much fire power for the visitors on bouncy surfaces. Dale Steyn caused problems during the first two ODIs and looked decidedly sharp. The Bangladesh batsmen can expect plenty of short stuff in the longer format. However, the rest of South Africa’s pace attack has been less than impressive so far this season, sending down a huge number of wides in the one-dayers against Kenya and Bangladesh. Morne Morkel, who begun his domestic season brilliantly, has had major problems with his radar, while the performances of Johann Louw and Albie Morkel suggest the pace ranks are not as well as stocked as previously thought.Makhaya Ntini is likely to return for the Tests after racking up the overs in the SuperSport series, while Monde Zondeki remains on the fringes after being overlooked for the ODIs against Bangladesh. The batting, though, is causing fewer concerns despite the suspension of Herschelle Gibbs. He wouldn’t have been considered for the Tests, where Neil McKenzie has formed a solid combination with Graeme Smith, who returned form injury on Sunday with 65 in Benoni, while Jacques Kallis, Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers have all spent time in the middle during the ODIs. The two Tests against Bangladesh offer further opportunity for fine tuning before the tour of Australia next month.

West Ham agree Kurt Zouma deal

David Ornstein has revealed that West Ham United have agreed a deal with Chelsea for defender Kurt Zouma.

The Lowdown: West Ham leave it late

The Hammers are soon to embark on a Europa League campaign – they will be in the group stage of the tournament this term after finishing sixth in the Premier League last time out.

However, they have made only one new signing so far this summer in goalkeeper Alphonse Areola (Transfermarkt), and they have just over a week left to get more deals done.

The Latest: Hammers close in on Zouma

As per The Athletic’s Ornstein, who is renowned for his reliability with transfer stories, the Irons are closing in on a deal for Zouma.

There are believed to be ready to pay the €30m (£25.7m) fee that Chelsea are seeking for the centre-back, although the Frenchman’s £125,000-a-week wages may be an issue.

The Verdict: Real quality

Taking Zouma to the London Stadium would be a terrific statement from David Moyes and co. At 26 years of age, he is entering his prime and played a big role for Chelsea last season – he appeared in 36 matches in all competitions for the Blues as they won the Champions League, and his manager Thomas Tuchel called him a “top-level” player (chelseafc.com).

His salary of £125,000 per week would make him the highest-paid player at West Ham (salarysport.com), so there is no doubt that he would represent a significant outlay. However, if the Hammers want to progress to the next level, they must not be afraid of offering slightly higher wages to prospective new signings who would be an upgrade on the existing squad.

In other news, West Ham are believed to be interested in this Brazilian striker.

Caleta-Car can be Southampton’s next Lovren

Duje Caleta-Car is reportedly on Southampton’s shortlist to replace Jannik Vestergaard this summer and he could be the next Dejan Lovren at St Mary’s.

What’s the word?

According to Hampshire Live journalist Tom Leach, Caleta-Car, alongside Ozan Kabak and Gary Cahill, is a candidate to replace Vestergaard in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side following his £15m move to Leicester City earlier this month.

After conceding the second-most goals in the Premier League last season and collapsing in the second half against Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday, it seems clear that the Saints need to add some quality to their backline, or they risk being dragged into a relegation battle this season.

Caleta-Car has established himself as a regular at Marseille in the past three seasons, making 91 appearances, in which he has contributed three goals and two assists.

Last season saw the Croatia international make 33 appearances in Ligue 1, averaging a solid 6.72 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Southampton’s next Lovren?

The similarities between Caleta-Car and Lovren are clear to see, as both are Croatian centre-backs who have made a name for themselves in Ligue 1, with the latter featuring regularly for Lyon before his move to St Mary’s in 2013.

After a superb debut season in Mauricio Pochettino’s side, he would go on to join Liverpool, where he would help them win the Premier League and Champions League under Jurgen Klopp, so if Caleta-Car proved to be anywhere near as good as his Croatian compatriot, then he could be a very good signing indeed.

Lovren has also sung the praises of the Marseille man in the past and has recommended him for a Premier League move, saying:

“In my opinion, Duje could easily play in England.

“He is physically very strong, stronger than other players. He will explode in a few years and become even stronger.”

Therefore, his signing would make a lot of sense for Southampton after Vestergaard’s departure, and Martin Semmens should definitely try and bring him in.
