Tendulkar set to become youngest to play 100 Tests

The man many regard as the finest batsman of his generation reaches another milestone in a record-breaking career when he walks out at The AMP Oval this week

Stephen Lamb03-Sep-2002The man many regard as the finest batsman of his generation reaches another milestone in a record-breaking career when he walks out at The AMP Oval this week. But when Sachin Tendulkar embarks upon his 100th Test on Thursday he will also be the youngest man ever to achieve the feat. Without doubt it will be a special occasion for the 29-year-old.”Reaching 100 Test matches would be special for anyone because not many players have played that many. I have enjoyed and cherished every moment and it was one of my dreams to play 100 Test matches for India. That’s when you can feel you have achieved something in life and contributed to the best of your ability.”Tendulkar is conscious of the fact that India will be looking for their first series win outside the sub-continent since 1986, when England were also the opponents.”Winning is all about delivering when the situation demands and I feel we have a better balanced team to deliver now,” said Tendulkar. “Whether it is England, Australia, Bangladesh or Kenya it doesn’t matter, winning at international level is special and we want to carry on winning.”It’s not going to be easy, there are five days of cricket left and probablythe most important five days of the series. We will have to pull up our socks and play the kind of cricket we played for five days at Headingley.”It’s important, we have been trying for so many years to win a series overseas and now the time has come where we stand a chance and a fair chance, I would say.”That chance has been set up by India’s innings victory over England at Headingley last week, to which Tendulkar contributed 193.”The last Test match was very good, the ideal Test match one would hope for,” he said. “To bat first, score big runs, put the opposition in, get them out and then finish them off. The batters got runs, the bowlers took wickets and we held some good catches.”It was a complete team effort so I think that was a perfect Test match. Iwould say it was the best Test match I have played in.”Tendulkar’s 193 was his 30th Test century, taking him past another record held by the great Don Bradman.”It’s always good when the players and your countrymen are expecting something from you, life would be quite boring if no-one expected anything from you. That has helped me, although at times the expectations of me have been very high.”What I try to do is live up to my own expectations and set targets which areachievable and try and live up to that. To try and live up to other people’s expectations can be very tough and I don’t want to put pressure on myself, I want to be realistic.”Tendulkar admits that his demi-god status back home, where is face is a constant feature of advertisements, imposes restrictions on his lifestyle.”I can’t live a normal life because the game is followed back home in such abig way,” he admitted. “There are pluses and minuses obviously, it is an advantage being in this position because not many guys can be in this position in India so I want to thank all the people for helping me to be here. It is difficult, though, because I can’t do a thing a normal family man would do.”

Harare Sports Club lift Vigne Cup title

Harare Sports Club clinched the Mashonaland Vigne Cup cricket tournament at the weekend after taking an unassailable lead following their six-wicket home victory over Universals

Second-placed Old Hararians lost ground after a crushing 84-run away defeat at Old Georgians, while Takashinga beat Alexandra Sports Club by eight runs. All the teams had to play shortened matches because of the wet spell that affected the capital at the weekend. The weekend matches were however, marred by the absence of official umpires. At Harare Sports Club, the match was reduced to 25 overs a side. Number of England contracts set to rise

England’s counties have agreed in principle to extend the number of centralcontracts to 20, after a meeting of the First Class Forum in Nottingham. The FCF agreed to a proposal to extend the number from 11 to 20 from September1, provided a financial system can be worked out.All but two members of the FCF, which comprises the 18 first-class counties and the MCC, voted in favour of the proposal, which will enable those contracted players to become full-time employees of the England and Wales Cricket Board.Counties will retain the registration of those players, and will have to pay when they turn out at domestic level. A capping system will be agreed to limit the amount of money counties pay back to the ECB.Speaking to the FCF today, ECB chairman Lord MacLaurin said: “I hope we can start putting our finances on a firmer footing as from next year as a result of the substantial increase in TV broadcasting revenue that we’re due to receivein 2003 together with a significant payment from the ICC for participating inthe 2003 World Cup.”If ratified, today’s agreement will move England towards the Australian andSouth African system of 25 contracted players. The FCF also agreed an increase in overseas players at each county from one to two, to allow for the loss of their England players.

Leeds given chance to sign Eddie Nketiah

Arsenal are reportedly offering Eddie Nketiah to Leeds United this summer, with £20m enough to prise him away from the Emirates Stadium.

The Lowdown: Attacking reinforcements needed

The Whites excelled in the Premier League last season as they finished ninth, but there did seem to be too much onus on Patrick Bamford scoring the goals.

That’s not to say that the Englishman single-handedly carried Leeds’ attack, but he was the only player to reach double figures in the league.

Marcelo Bielsa may believe that a deputy to Bamford is required this summer, and Nketiah could potentially be that man.

The Latest: Leeds offered chance to sign Nketiah

According to Football Insider, Arsenal are happy to let the young striker return to Elland Road, having enjoyed a spell on loan there in 2019/20.

Nketiah is out of contract with the Gunners in 2022, so now is the time for them to receive a hefty sum for the 22-year-old.

The Verdict: Worth the money?

While Nketiah may not yet be the finished article, he is a young player with undoubted pedigree, leading the all-time scoring charts for England’s under-21s.

At 22, he has time on his side and could develop brilliantly under Bielsa, playing second fiddle to Bamford but proving to be a handy squad option.

Granted, £20m is a lot of money so there would be an element of risk, but Nketiah is an adept goalscorer who could have a bright future, while he already has ample Premier League experience under his belt and therefore should not need any great adjusting period if he moves to Elland Road.

In other news, Leeds have been handed a boost in their quest to sign one player this summer. Find out who it is here.

Leeds boss Bielsa could reunite with Ayew

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa could enjoy a surprisingly shrewd reunion with Andre Ayew amid Carlton Palmer’s transfer claim.

What’s the story?

The Ghanaian is set to leave Championship side Swansea following the expiry of his contract this summer, and Palmer has suggested the Whites as a team who should be looking to explore signing him on a free transfer.

The former England defender told Football Transfer Tavern: “Swansea have only let him go because they didn’t get promoted and he’s their highest-paid player. 17 goals in the Championship, 16 goals the season before stands to reason that he will go up and score goals in the Premier League. If he weighs in with 10 or 12 goals for you, and you take him on a free, that could be some good business.”

Shrewd signing for Bielsa

While signing a 31-year-old on a free transfer is hardly something which is likely to get Leeds fans excited, it could be the type of smart move which ticks a lot of boxes for Bielsa.

Ayew himself has previously spoken about just how highly he rates the Whites manager and the kind of connection he has built up with the Argentine after their time together at Marseille. The Ghanaian said: “I appreciate Marcelo Bielsa enormously. He is an incredible manager. We had a very very strong relationship at Marseille. And there you have it. That’s all I can say.”

Despite his age, it appears that Ayew has lost none of his appetite, with Swansea boss Steve Cooper saying: “We know he has the ability, he can be as good as anyone in the league and he can play at a higher level.

“But the fact he is showing the commitment and work-rate he is, means it is rubbing off on everybody. It is certainly motivating me to see a player so committed to what we are doing.”

The 91-cap Ayew is someone has been dubbed as a “game-changer” by his former manager Slaven Bilic, while his Swansea teammate Yan Dhanda is also a huge fan, saying: “Andre is a goalscorer. He scores goals, and if you put the ball in the box nine times out of 10 Andre is going to be in the right position and he is going to score.”

With 17 goals in the Championship last season, and the ability to play through the middle and out wide, Ayew would represent an experienced option for Bielsa to add to his squad.

Given that the Whites manager already knows him from his time at Marseille, along with Ayew’s previous Premier League experience, this seems the kind of low-risk signing who could bring decent rewards for Leeds.

Meanwhile, Leeds are keen on signing this Premier League star…

Telegraph journalist drops Poch update for Spurs

Writing on Twitter, journalist Jason Burt of the Daily Telegraph has dropped a behind the scenes update on Mauricio Pochettino to Tottenham Hotspur having spoken to Paris-Saint Germain.

The Lowdown: Poch and Spurs, the return?

Last week, the Athletic broke news of Pochettino and his alleged desire to complete a sensational return to north London – with Tottenham reciprocating that interest as the hunt for a new manager goes on.

It’s been over six weeks since Spurs announced the sacking of former boss Jose Mourinho and no new boss has been appointed yet despite the club originally wishing to have it done by the end of 2020/2021.

As well as Pochettino, the likes of Erik Ten Hag and Antonio Conte are also possible candidates for the position (football.london).

The Latest: Telegraph journalist drops update

Now, after speaking to the Argentine’s current club, PSG, Burt of the Daily Telegraph has dropped a behind the scenes update from their side in regards to this possible Spurs appointment.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news/” title=”Spurs latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, he claims that, despite claims to the contrary, PSG are ‘adamant’ Pochettino hasn’t made an exit plea.

“Having spoken to Paris Saint-Germain,” he explained on Twitter.

“They are adamant that Mauricio Pochettino has not told them or club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi that he wants to leave.”

The Verdict: Blow for Spurs?

Due to Pochettino’s contract situation, made all the more complicated by PSG appearing to extend it by a further year (The Times), Spurs face a tough battle to secure him.

The 49-year-old would undoubtedly be a great appointment for the club given the profile they are after, which is allegedly a manager who can reinstall an attack-based philosophy and exciting brand of football (Alasdair Gold).

However, Ajax boss Ten Hag is seen as being ‘similar’ to Pochettino and firmly on the Tottenham radar, so if chairman Daniel Levy cannot wrestle his former employee away from PSG, there are fruitful alternatives.

Preview: Derby XI vs Wednesday

Following a disastrous run of recent results, Wayne Rooney knows that nothing but a win will guarantee his Derby County side their Championship status come the full-time whistle on Saturday.

Having now gone six games without a win in the league – including a gutting 2-1 defeat to Swansea City last time out, a game in which the Rams had taken the lead – Derby now face a relegation showdown with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, with the loser being consigned to the third tier of English football as of next season.

There are further stipulations – a draw would be enough for survival if Rotherham United fail to beat Cardiff City in their fixture. However, if the Rams simply win their own game, they will have done enough to stay up regardless of what happens elsewhere.

Will Rooney decide to make any changes to his starting XI from the Swansea fixture? Here’s our predicted XI, along with the latest team and injury news…

Despite having no new injury concerns, we predict that Rooney will make three changes from the team which started against Swansea last week.

The first change sees goalkeeper David Marshall come back into the side having sat out the club’s last two league fixtures, as the 36-year-old’s experience in big games – none less so than Scotland’s recent Euro 2020 play-off triumph – could help to calm the nerves of a shaky Derby backline. As such, Kelle Roos – who has been in abysmal form over his last two appearances – moves to the bench.

The second alteration sees Max Bird – the Rams’ 10th-best performer in the league this season – replacing Jason Knight, who despite a decent performance against the Swans hasn’t been all that consistent in his displays over the course of the season.

Finally, after a run of nine games without a goal and a very disappointing performance last time out, Martyn Waghorn drops to the bench for the 24-year-old Patrick Roberts, who has shown in his time at Celtic – with the winger providing more assists against Rangers than against any other side – that he is a big-game player. This switch sees Colin Kazim-Richards move to the centre of the Derby attack, while Roberts slots in on the right-hand side.

The rest of the team remains unchanged, with Tom Lawrence keeping his place in a front three, while Lee Buchanan stays on the bench, with Craig Forsyth starting at left-back.

O time do Arruda atua ainda neste domingo.

Rob Lee claims Shelvey doesn’t have to run

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Rob Lee, who made 343 appearances for Newcastle United, has claimed that Jonjo Shelvey is in the team to do things other than run about the pitch.

During an episode of Zoom Army, a series on Newcastle’s YouTube channel, Shelvey was asked by a fan why he was so lazy which saw the stand-in captain claim his running stats said otherwise.

The £70,000-per-week midfielder is more known for his passing ability, something that often left Rafa Benitez awestruck during his time at the club.

Speaking on how Shelvey is not in the team to run about the pitch and what he really brings to the team, Lee exclusively told FFC:

“I think he probably runs but doesn’t sprint, but he probably covers a lot of ground. I’m not a believer in stats because Jonjo Shelvey is not in the team to run around and close people down.

“Jonjo Shelvey has great passing ability and on his day his passing is as good as anybody so I’d say he is probably one of the best passers in the league.”

Shelvey signed in January 2016, which was to be only months before Newcastle were relegated to the Championship. However, the former Liverpool midfielder stuck with the club and helped get them promoted at the first time of asking.

The England international has been handed the captain’s armband while Jamaal Lascelles is recovering from an injury that could keep him out for several weeks.
