Braces against Napoli, USMNT hat-tricks, brilliance at Bernabeu and the 10 best games of Christian Pulisic's career – ranked

After Pulisic's standout showing against Napoli, GOAL looks at the USMNT star's top performances for club and country

Is Christian Pulisic really in the form of his life? It's a phrase that's probably tossed around a little too often. If form is inherently temporary, "form of his life" suggests that there's a limit to the greatness. But many have used it to describe Pulisic, just the same.

And if you're generous in the interpretation, it's a decent shout. Pulisic has been truly excellent for AC Milan thus far this season under new manager Max Allegri. The tactics have been a little funky for the , but Pulisic has exuded main man energy, and is, as things stand, in contention for the Serie A Player of the Year Award. That's no small feat.

Last weekend's win over Napoli only emphasized that fact. Pulisic scored one and assisted another as Milan bested the reigning champions, a real statement of intent for a new look side. But where does that performance rank among his best?

GOAL looks at the U.S. international's best career performances for club and country.

    10April 2021: Chelsea 1, Real Madrid 1

What a needed goal. Sure, Real Madrid weren't playing at the Santiago Bernabeu when they hosted Chelsea in April 2021, but they still made a fearsome Champions League semifinal opponent. Ultimately, the damage was done in the second leg at Samford Bridge a week later. But Pulisic set the table for everything, rounding Thibaut Courtois and slotting home to earn a 1-1 draw which proved to be enough to get the job done.

    9August 2017: Borussia Dortmund 3, Wolfsburg 0

Even back in August 2017, Pulisic's talent was no secret. It was just a question of putting it all together. He got off to a fine start in that effort, finding the net and turning in a wonderful all-round performance to pace Dortmund to a 3-0 win.

    8June 2017: USMNT 2, Trinidad & Tobago 0

No, not Trinidad game. Before it all went wrong, Pulisic was carrying the USMNT through qualifying. And this game gave them hope, as Bruce Arena's side leaned on their star to secure a 2-0 win. Pulisic scored both, and, momentarily, everything seemed alright.

    7November 2024: Milan 3, Real Madrid 1

Sure, Pulisic had gotten a result against Madrid on the road before. But doing at the Bernabeu proper? That's a different challenge altogether. Pulisic didn't score here, but he set up one and was vital in another as Milan exposed Los Blancos at home. The final score was 3-1, but it really could have been five.

Wayne Rooney scores goal like Man Utd 2011 Champions League final in Seoul

Manchester United hero Wayne Rooney remains one of the deadliest strikers to have played at Old Trafford, and it appears that he hasn’t lost his ability to score stunning goals, even after his retirement.

Wayne Rooney scores blockbuster goal in Nexon Icons match

While the Premier League begins to heat up again after the conclusion of the international break, football fans on the other side of the world were able to take in a thrilling match-up of legends in Seoul on Sunday.

In the latest instalment of the Nexon Icons 2025 Series, FC Spear and Shield United went head-to-head for the Nexon trophy and plenty of the world’s best at their craft were on show in front of their adoring crowd.

Rooney led the line for FC Spear, followed up by a support act of epic proportion, including Didier Drogba, Thierry Henry, Kaka and Steven Gerrard, among other star-studded faces.

On the other side, Carles Puyol, Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Iker Casillas were just some of the names on display, but former Manchester United star Rooney grabbed the headlines, even if his side went on to lose 2-1 courtesy of strikes from Maicon and Joo Ho Park.

As seen below, the Three Lions icon delivered a magnificent effort from outside the area to level the scoring, one that bore striking similarities to his strike in Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat against Barcelona in the 2011 Champions League final at Wembley.

Forever a legend at both Everton and Manchester United, he is enjoying life after his playing days and still has a God-given talent most footballers would kill to replicate. Now, it remains to be seen whether he dips his toe back into management.

Full transcript of line-ups from Nexon Icons match

Shield United: Young Kwang Kim, Iker Casillas, Alessandro Nesta, Michael Carrick, Marchisio, Gilberto Silva, Joo Ho Park, Sol Campbell, Claude Makelele, Ashley Cole, Maicon, John Arne Riise, Nemanja Vidic, Carles Puyol, Young Pyo Lee, Rio Ferdinand.

FC Spear: Bum Young Lee, Gianluigi Buffon, Ja Cheol Koo, Ki Hyon Seol, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Clarence Seedorf, Eden Hazard, Wayne Rooney, Gareth Bale, Kaka, Steven Gerrard, Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, Ji Sung Park, Didier Drogba.

What next for Wayne Rooney in management?

On the management front, Rooney is without a club after leaving Plymouth Argyle in 2024 after a run of five wins, six draws and 14 losses in 25 matches across all competitions.

Previously, he has also enjoyed spells in charge of Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City, albeit the Manchester United hero has enjoyed varied degrees of success at all four clubs.

Wayne Rooney picks between Celtic and Rangers, wished he played for them

The former England striker wanted to head to Scotland during his career.

ByCharlie Smith Sep 11, 2025

Speaking to The Rest is Football earlier this year, Rooney admitted he would like to take on a new challenge in the dugout, but only if it comes in the right set of circumstances.

“I would like to go back in (to management). But it would have to be the right club. Certainly the right club. I think you always have that ego, don’t you? You always have that confidence you could go in and get the best out of a bad or difficult situation.”

Coaching vacancies will become available throughout the next few months, though some would suggest that Rooney putting his boots back would be an even better use of his time!

Arsenal now set to rival Liverpool for signing of £35m star who Rice loves

Arsenal are now expected to rival Liverpool for the signature of an “elite” player, who Declan Rice is a big fan of.

Gunners lay down marker with victory against Nottingham Forest

The Gunners suffered an early setback in the Premier League title race at Anfield before the international break, with Liverpool emerging as 1-0 victors, but they got right back on track against Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium.

A Martin Zubimendi brace either side of Viktor Gyokeres’ third goal of the season ensured the north Londoners picked up all three points, sending Mikel Arteta’s side back to the top of the Premier League table.

As expected, Arteta’s side have looked particularly impressive from a defensive point of view up to this point, with Dominik Szoboszlai’s arguably unstoppable free-kick the only goal they have conceded in the opening four games.

Arsenal intensify interest in signing "special" gem ahead of Liverpool

He’s a future star…

ByTom Cunningham Sep 13, 2025

However, there has now been a suggestion that Arteta remains keen on strengthening his backline even further, with a report from The Boot Room revealing Arsenal are now expected to rival Liverpool for the signature of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Arne Slot’s side are still the favourites to sign Guehi, despite missing out on a £35m deal during the summer transfer window, but there could now be stiff competition for the centre-back’s signature, with a whole host of Europe’s top clubs, including Chelsea, also keen.

Transfer expert Graeme Bailey adds: “He is a fantastic person and everyone who meets him relays that fact – I was told by one high ranking Premier League executive that signing him is one of the ‘least risky’ transfers that anyone could do.

"Elite" Guehi would provide incredible depth for Arteta

Arteta is already blessed with a number of top-quality options at centre-back, with William Saliba and Gabriel forming a formidable partnership, which led to the Gunners boasting the best defensive record in the Premier League last season.

Having also signed Cristhian Mosquera in the summer transfer window, there are doubts over whether signing another defender is necessary, but the Crystal Palace star clearly has the ability to be a success at the Emirates Stadium.

Lauded as an “elite” centre-back by writer Eddie Gibbs, the 25-year-old is now an established England international, picking up 25 caps, with Statman Dave recently singing him out for praise for his performance in the 5-0 victory against Serbia.

The Englishman, who Rice is a big fan of, scored his first goal for the Three Lions in the thrashing, while he has also made a flying start to the season at club level, particularly impressing in a 3-0 victory against Aston Villa.

That said, it could be very difficult for Guehi to displace Saliba or Gabriel in the starting XI, so a move to Anfield could make more sense, especially if Ibrahima Konate doesn’t sign a new contract.

Contact made: Leeds now plotting last-gasp offer to sign "underrated" star

As the hours continue to tick away on transfer deadline day, Leeds United are still searching for that one last addition of attacking spark and have made contact in pursuit of exactly that.

Leeds' deadline day plan

After a 1-0 victory against Everton, 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal and, most recently, solid 0-0 draw against Newcastle United, Leeds should be fairly happy with how they’ve started their Premier League return. But they must not get complacent. There’s still work to be done in the transfer market.

For all their good work to earn four points from a possible nine, it’s noticeable that they’ve managed just one goal whilst doing so and that came courtesy of Lukas Nmecha’s penalty on the opening day.

It’s an attacking problem that Daniel Farke pointed out before the season even got underway and one that, to their credit, the 49ers have been attempting to solve through targets such as Igor Paixao and Facundo Buonanotte. Ultimately, however, any potential deals for those targets have been hijacked by the likes of Marseille and Chelsea.

Even after those frustrating blows, though, Leeds are not giving up. Farke reiterated that they will be working until the window slams shut to welcome much-needed attacking quality, telling reporters: “In defence and midfield, goalkeeper position and full-back position, we’ve done really good business.

“But we spoke quite open and honest about it, we would need to add some more quality up front. We need to stay awake until the last hour of this window.”

The wait may well be worth it for Leeds fans if deadline day reports are anything to go by too, with the Whites preparing to step up their move to sign one particular star.

Leeds plotting last-gasp Spertsyan offer

As reported by Armenie Football, Leeds are now plotting a late offer to sign Eduard Spertsyan after already making their first approach and launching contact in an attempt to get the ball rolling.

James upgrade: Leeds are in late talks to seal "remarkable" £20m signing

Leeds United are reportedly in talks to sign a star who could be an upgrade on Dan James.

The Krasnodar attacking midfielder would no doubt help solve Leeds’ problems going forward, and it could even be argued that he’d be a better arrival than the likes of Buonanotte.

Dubbed “underrated” by U23 scout Antonio Mango in 2023, Spertsyan has remained a player under the radar but could now get his chance to take the spotlight at Elland Road.

The Whites would also be signing a player who’s already been bang in form this season, with five goals and eight assists to his name in just 11 games.

He has conceded 107 runs across eight overs in three games, and has taken just one wicket.GT’s win against SRH was their third in four games, taking them to No. 2 on the points table. It was their third victory in a row after they started the season with a defeat against Punjab Kings.

Karachi Kings announced the Bangladesh wicketkeeper, who was drafted in the Silver Category this year, will be replaced by Australian wicketkeeper Ben McDermott.”Unfortunately, I couldn’t be part of this tournament, even though I was really looking forward to it,” Litton said in a statement on Karachi Kings’ website. “Life can be unpredictable – just my bad luck.”McDermott has never played in the PSL before but does have recent T20 form coming into the league. £100k-per-week Tottenham ace wants to leave after falling out with Frank

Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank is just months into his new job managing a big six Premier League side for the very first time, and it’ll take some weeks before the Dane fully knows his best team.

It’s been a fairly promising start for Frank since he took over from Ange Postecoglou, who’s now stepped into Nuno Espírito Santo’s shoes at Nottingham Forest.

They were unlucky to lose the UEFA Super Cup final to PSG after what was a brilliant overall performance, with Frank then leading Tottenham to two wins from their opening two Premier League games, including a stunning 2-0 win away to Man City.

Of course, they were brought right back down to Earth with their first domestic defeat of the season at home to Bournemouth, but Frank has the luxury of welcoming two high-profile signings for Spurs’ first game from internationals against West Ham.

Xavi Simons – who joined in a £52 million deal from RB Leipzig in the final days of the transfer window – and Randal Kolo Muani are both expected to make their debuts in the London derby on Saturday.

Their arrivals come as a much-needed boost for Frank, who is currently without James Maddison, Radu Dragusin, Dejan Kulusveski, Kota Takai, Dominic Solanke and Yves Bissouma through injury.

Dragusin is back in training after months out with an ACL problem, while Solanke’s ankle issue is subject to a late fitness test before Tottenham take on West Ham at the London Stadium.

It is unclear just how bad Bissouma’s injury really is, but according to various reports, the Mali international is out of Frank’s long-term plans regardless.

Bissouma was left out of their UEFA Super Cup squad due to disciplinary issues and turning up late to training, with the £100,000-per-week midfielder still yet to play a single competitive minute for Spurs since Frank joined.

The transfer windows in Turkey, Portugal and Mexico are still open, meaning that the 29-year-old could still secure a move away from N17, with Saudi clubs able to sign players until September 23.

Bissouma could leave Tottenham for Turkey or indeed Saudi in the coming days (GiveMeSport), and this is backed up by the likes of Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge.

He was also left out of Tottenham’s 22-man Champions League squad, so the writing appears on the wall.

Yves Bissouma wants to leave Tottenham after fallout with Thomas Frank

According to Football Insider and journalist Pete O’Rourke, Bissouma wants to leave Tottenham after a fallout with Frank, and the Lilywhites will accept a suitable offer for him.

The prospect of regular first-team football could see him push for a move away with various windows still open, with O’Rourke expanding on this when speaking to the Inside Track podcast.

While Bissouma has been praised for his quality when fit and firing, having played a key role during Tottenham’s run to the Europa League final in May, his lack of punctuality and attitude appears to be becoming a problem.

It is best for all parties if the “underrated” ex-Brighton star finds a move elsewhere, and particularly for Spurs, as his contract is due to expire next year.

No Dorgu, new role for Amad: How Amorim can save Man Utd job & keep 3-4-2-1

A familiar sense of Deja vu crept in during the aftermath of Manchester United’s dismal derby defeat. Hadn’t we seen this one before?

Sitting in the Sky Sports studio at the Etihad, greats of United’s past – Roy Keane and Gary Neville – carried out the bi-weekly post-mortem, analysing and debating the future of yet another post-Sir Alex Ferguson manager.

The treble-winning duo had just been forced to witness what has become a trademark display of the last few years for the Red Devils. A performance with moments of encouragement, albeit with glaring problems at both ends of the pitch.

A team that can’t score and simply can’t defend, as their -3 goal difference can attest to, won’t get very far amid what has become an increasingly competitive Premier League.

These are not new issues for the Old Trafford side, although new lows and new depths have been reached in the Ruben Amorim regime. 31 points from 31 top-flight games in charge, with a worse win ratio than any permanent United manager post-World War II.

The Portuguese coach has been steadfast in his unwillingness to alter the much-maligned 3-4-2-1 system, but something simply has to change. How about tweaking the starting lineup, Ruben?

1 GK – Senne Lammens

It would be unfair to shift too much of the blame for Sunday’s defeat onto starting goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir, although the Turkish international hardly inspired much confidence yet again.

Indeed, a heavy touch in the early knockings almost gifted an opening to Erling Haaland inside the area, while the 27-year-old was far too easily beaten by the Norwegian’s dinked effort to make it 2-0.

While Gianluigi Donnarumma grew in the face of Benjamin Sesko bearing down on goal in the first half, Bayindir simply shrunk. Now is the time to give new man Senne Lammens a go instead.

2 RCB – Leny Yoro

The weekend clash may not have been Leny Yoro at his best, having been withdrawn on the hour mark, although the Frenchman has been a real bright spark in 2025, after making his competitive debut for the club in December.

With pace, power and poise, the teenager has all the makings of a world-class centre-back, with reports even suggesting that Amorim views him as the club’s ‘next Rio Ferdinand’ due to his innate composure in the backline.

While his best work did come as a left-sided centre-back last term, it would be wise to continue with the ex-Lille starlet on the opposite flank.

3 CB – Matthijs de Ligt

A starter in every league game so far this season, Matthijs de Ligt has begun to grow into his role as a starting option at United, even if he was hardly error-free up against the relentless Haaland last time out.

Seemingly made for that central role in the back three, the Dutchman has the edge over Harry Maguire right now, with the sight of the Englishman failing to catch Manchester City’s lethal number nine having become far too familiar of late.

Maguire remains a valuable squad member in Amorim’s ranks, although Sunday again outlined his weaknesses. This is De Ligt’s time now.

4 LCB – Ayden Heaven

While Lisandro Martinez may look to slot back in amid his return from injury later this year, the derby defeat showcased yet again the need for increased mobility in the backline.

The diminutive Martinez can’t exactly offer that, although young Ayden Heaven certainly can. At just 18, the ex-Arsenal sensation is not yet the finished product, although as Wayne Rooney stated last season, he looks like he’s “been there for years”.

The speed and strength of Heaven could then see Luke Shaw finally ousted at left centre-back, with the long-serving defender looking worryingly off the pace at the Etihad. Skipped past by Jeremy Doku, and overpowered by Haaland, the 30-year-old has surely outstayed his welcome in Manchester.

5 RWB – Noussair Mazraoui

One potential positive from the weekend defeat was the return of Noussair Mazraoui, with the Moroccan international putting in a typically accomplished performance at right wing-back, prior to his second-half withdrawal.

A player viewed by those at the club as one of their best signings in years, the former Bayern Munich man has the versatility to slot in as a centre-back, although he could make the right flank his own instead.

Elegant in possession and an industrious figure out of it, Mazraoui is the type of player that this team needs – they are a better side with him in it.

6 CM – Bruno Fernandes

The debate surrounding Bruno Fernandes will continue to rage on. Should United have sanctioned his Saudi switch? Does Amorim need to reinstate him in the number ten berth? Can he ever thrive as part of a midfield two?

While the skipper’s inability to track Phil Foden for the game’s opener showcased his shortcomings in that deep-lying berth, the lack of adequate alternatives ensures that this experiment must be continued.

A man who recorded 38 goals and assists last term while largely operating in this role, Fernandes has the quality to make it work. He just needs a suitable partner.

7 CM – Kobbie Mainoo

Pep Guardiola gripped the top of his head in frustration as Kobbie Mainoo breezed his way through the City midfield, a second-half moment that outlined just why Amorim has to find a permanent role for the 20-year-old in his side.

At 33 and into the final year of his contract, Casemiro’s time at Old Trafford is nearly up. As for Manuel Ugarte, the Uruguayan warrior is up for the fight, although lacks the technical prowess to match – notably ranking in just the bottom 17% of European midfielders for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref.

Mainoo isn’t perfect – Amorim has stressed that more than most – although in a side that stinks of chaos, he can be the player to bring that much-needed sense of calm.

8 LWB – Amad

The player to have made the most touches in the penalty area on Sunday? It was not Haaland no, it was Patrick Dorgu with 12.

The young Dane was the major outlet for the visitors, although despite his regular involvement, the 20-year-old’s lack of end quality was stark. As per Sofascore, he lost the ball on 17 occasions and successfully completed just one of his five attempted dribbles.

In truth, the lack of an alternative has ensured the January arrival remains in by default, although Amorim could be bold and unleash Amad in his place. A natural left-footer, the Ivorian has been trialled on the opposite flank, but why not give him a chance on the left instead?

9 RAM – Bryan Mbeumo

Perhaps the only bright spark in the early weeks of the season, and in the derby, Bryan Mbeumo has been a rare astute signing if recent evidence is anything to go by, having netted against both Grimsby and Burnley last month.

Had it not been for the remarkable reach of Donnarumma, that tally would have been bolstered on Sunday, with the Cameroonian also unable to sort his feet out from close range after Amad’s pull back.

A mixture of silk, speed and devastating finishing, the 26-year-old is everything United have been crying out for. Let’s hope he doesn’t get dragged down by Amorim’s sinking ship.

10 LAM – Matheus Cunha

This selection, in the short-term, would be fitness permitting, although if available, new man Matheus Cunha is already a shoo-in for the starting XI, even if goal contributions have been lacking to date.

On another day, the Brazilian could have had a brace away at Fulham, with it hopefully not too long before he is fit and firing again.

That left-sided number ten berth looks to be made for the former Wolves talisman, with Mason Mount’s inability to stay off the treatment table ensuring that, for all Amorim’s praise, the unfortunate Englishman just can’t be relied upon.
