'The best form he's been in' – Carey enters Test summer with plenty of promise

The presence of a white-hot Josh Inglis in Australia’s Test squad at any point last summer might have made incumbent wicketkeeper Alex Carey nervous. But right now, Carey is arguably Australia’s most relaxed man. He enters the Test series against India as their most in-form player and looms as a potential match-winner with bat and gloves, even with Inglis in the squad for his batting.Carey, 33, is entering his fourth home summer as a Test player and says he has never felt fresher. No player in the Australian team had a longer layoff without cricket over the winter.Between his match-winning, and potentially career-saving 98 not out in Christchurch in Australia’s last Test in March, Carey went a full six months without playing a single game. He did go to Major League Cricket but did not play. That stint was part of a pre-season that international players rarely get these days. The benefits are showing. He posted ODI scores of 74 and 77 not out first up in England on his return to the side in September. He has blasted 90, 111, and 123 not out in the first two Shield matches and 44 and 42 as captain in a low-scoring win in the third. He rounded off his preparation with 75 off 63 in his last One-Day Cup game for South Australia.Related

The time away gave him space to tinker with his batting. He credits his form, in part, to feeling fresh. But also to a small tweak in his set-up that he made without any input from anyone else.”When you play and play and play, you don’t really get a chance to work on too many things,” Carey told reporters on Monday ahead of the first Test in Perth. “Not having games coming up for a while, I’ve just mucked around a little bit with my hands and found something that felt good and sort of ran with that.”It’s only slight, but at the moment, it feels like I’m in a good position and reacting pretty well to the ball. But I think just a bit of time off and a bit of exploring gives you those opportunities.”The slight change? Simply picking his bat up a little higher in his stance. Carey had noticed in his set-up that his hands and bat were a little low, with the toe of the blade below horizontal and pointing to gully upon the bowler’s release. It was causing him to feel rushed at times on top of affecting his bat path, and his form had diminished over a period of 14 months between his only Test century in December 2022 and his 98 not out in Christchurch. During that period he averaged just 23.76 across 17 Tests, and lost his ODI place to Inglis after the first game of the 2023 World Cup.He now has his hands higher, with the toe of the blade pointing over first slip’s head. The results have been phenomenal. He has looked one of the best players in Australian domestic cricket this summer, striking the ball with power and looking like he has so much time at the crease. The technical tweak has helped his decision-making too. There were times in that 14-month lull when he was playing well but finding ways to get out through poor premeditated decision-making. He now feels less strongly about the need to premeditate.”I’m just trying to keep a really level and consistent process batting,” Carey said. “I think, at times, potentially getting out in ways with premeditation, which can happen, and trying to do too many things at once. I’m just trying to stay quite clear now and react to the ball and back yourself to make the right decision.”Like in the ODI format, there could be space for both Carey and Josh Inglis in the Test XI•Getty Images

The addition of Inglis to the Test squad, coming off two Shield centuries himself and some superb white-ball form, is of no concern to Carey either. Inglis has been picked as the spare batter, as cover for the top six rather than Carey. The pair have played ODIs together and did so as recently as in September at Lord’s.He acknowledged they could play in the same Test XI together at some stage which – as it did in the ODI team – could pave the way for Inglis to pinch his spot down the track. But Carey is pragmatic about the inferred pressure Inglis puts on his role as the No. 1 wicketkeeper.”I understand it’s a unique position to be in,” Carey said. “There’s one wicketkeeper in a team, and there’s lots of quality around the country who are trying to get that spot and I was one of those players once. You focus on your game. You control what you can control.”For me, it’s doing my job for this team, hopefully help us win games of cricket and play in this Test team as long as possible.”His long-time teammate Travis Head believes he’s never seen Carey bat better.”It’s the best form he’s been in,” Head said. “So for him, it’s trying not to overplay it and not worry about too much. I know he’s not. I think he’s in a great space. Has been for a while and now it’s starting to click for him. And once you sort of capture that form, you want to try to continue it on again. You’re never guaranteed that that happens, but I think he’s going to play a huge role in his position and in this team.”

Farke's a fan: Leeds keen on signing "unplayable" £20m Paixao alternative

Leeds United are now keen on signing an “unplayable” forward, who could be brought in as an alternative to Feyenoord’s Igor Paixao, according to a report.

Farke looking to sign new winger

With Leeds looking to avoid relegation in their first season back in the Premier League, they are vying to sign a new winger that would guarantee goals, and Paixao has emerged as a major target over the past few days.

The Whites are said to be chasing the Brazilian winger, who performed remarkably well in the Netherlands last season, while also proving himself in the Champions League.

Given the level of the forward’s performances last season, however, there is widespread interest in his signature, with the likes of AS Roma, Atalanta and Marseille also being named as potential suitors this summer.

Consequently, it could be difficult for Daniel Farke’s side to get a deal over the line, but the Feyenoord star is not the only option on the shortlist.

Indeed, according to a report from Leeds Live, Leeds are expected to make further additions to their squad this summer, and Tottenham Hotspur’s Manor Solomon could be among them, given that he remains well-liked by Farke.

Paixao would love him: Leeds in talks to sign £18m Joseph upgrade

Leeds United are reportedly in talks to sign a star who transfer target Igor Paixao would love.

ByDan Emery Jul 22, 2025

Solomon has expressed a desire to remain at Tottenham and prove himself to Thomas Frank upon returning from injury, but Spurs may choose to cash-in before the end of the summer transfer window, opening the door for a move to Elland Road.

As such, a move may not be in the offing anytime soon, with Frank also expected to take a look at the former Leeds loan star when he recovers from a minor calf injury, in order to make a decision over his future.

"Unplayable" Solomon ready to test himself in the Premier League

The Israeli was one of the driving forces behind the Whites’ promotion to the Premier League last season, collecting 10 goals and 12 assists in 39 Championship games, with former Leeds boss Neil Redfearn lauding him after an impressive performance against Hull City.

Redfearn said: “I thought Manor Solomon was probably the man of the match to be honest. He’s got a quality that is better than this level, you can obviously see that. Initially in the first 20 minutes it was like tackling smoke. He was unplayable at times.”

With Tottenham setting an asking price of £20m back in May, a deal for the 25-year-old could be on the expensive side, but he is clearly ready to make the step-up to the top flight.

However, Paixao could also be an attainable target for Leeds this summer, with widespread reports suggesting Marseille’s pursuit of the forward is at a standstill, and given his performances in the Champions League last season, he could be the preferable option.

Why Dele Alli is expected to miss out on Wrexham transfer and chance to link up with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in Championship

Dele Alli’s hopes of securing a lifeline move to Wrexham appear over, with manager Phil Parkinson hinting that his final squad spot will instead go to returning star Ollie Rathbone. The former Tottenham and England midfielder, recently released by Como, had been linked with the Hollywood-owned club but now looks set to continue his uncertain search for a new home.

Dele has been released by Serie A side Como after his contract was terminated by mutual consent. The 29-year-old, once a Premier League star at Tottenham, has since been linked with potential moves to West Brom, Birmingham, and Wrexham. However, rumours of a North Wales switch have now been dampened.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wrexham boss Parkinson has suggested that Rathbone, last season’s Player of the Year for the Red Dragons, will fill the club’s 25th squad slot once he returns from injury. Rathbone has been sidelined with an ankle problem but is close to fitness after impressing during pre-season. His return appears to rule out a move for Dele.

    WHAT PARKINSON SAID

Speaking to the media, Parkinson said: "I think Ollie is closing in. I just wanted to make sure Ollie got through this week in training and the signs are looking positive, and he'll be back in a couple of weeks. We need Ollie back, he's a key player for us. He was instrumental for us last year.

"He's a player who has played in the Championship; first year did well, second one was a difficult one at Rotherham because they had a very weak squad. But he's played at this level and when he signed for us, he was determined to get back into the Championship.

"His start to the season has been curtailed but obviously he's a very naturally fit player and the sooner we get him back involved in football, the better. His energy and his quality, I can't wait to get Ollie back out with us."

He's Cherki 2.0: Man City now targeting "technically beautiful" £60m star

It has certainly been an active summer transfer window so far for Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side, who came third in the Premier League last term, look vastly different to 2024/25. Outgoings have included Jack Grealish to Everton and Kevin De Bruyne signing for Napoli upon the expiration of his contract.

With those departures, there have been some new signings too. One of their marquee additions this summer has been to sign Lyon and French attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki. He cost the Citizens £30m, and is one of the players purchased to help revitalise their attack.

However, it seems like City will not stop there when it comes to signing a new attacker. They have recently been linked to another exciting young forward.

City’s new attacking target

City have been on the hunt for a new attacker over the past few days. One of the names who has cropped up is Real Madrid and Brazil star Rodrygo, with a £85m deal quoted.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

At this stage, it is unclear if that will go through, and City may have identified an alternative.

According to a recent report from Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, City have placed AS Monaco and France under-21 international Maghnes Akliouche ‘to their shortlist’ ahead of a potential move this summer.

AS Monaco's MaghnesAkliouche

He is seen as a cheaper alternative to Rodrygo, with Monaco reportedly asking for £60m earlier in the window. This is an open race, with City set to go head-to-head for his signature with German side Bayer Leverkusen, who view him as their ‘dream target’ this summer.

Why Akliouche would be a good signing

At 23 years of age, Akliouche is becoming a key player for Monaco. Having broken through their academy, he has now firmly established himself as a crucial part of their squad on his favoured right wing, where he shone last term.

Maghnes Akliouche for AS Monaco.

In the 2024/25 campaign, the Frenchman played 43 times for Monaco across all competitions. He managed to find the back of the net on seven occasions and provided an impressive 12 assists.

It was the French top flight where Akliouche really stood out. Monaco’s number 11 registered 15 goals and assists in 32 Ligue 1 matches. The best of the bunch was surely this sublime overhead kick against Stade Rennais at the start of the calendar year.

This deal certainly has shades of the move to bring Cherki to East Manchester this summer, and Akliouche could be the second coming of his fellow French star.

Although the former Lyon forward is only a few games into his City career, he has already made a big impression.

He played four times for the Citizens in the recent Club World Cup, where he scored one goal and assisted another.

On top of that, he made 44 appearances for boyhood side Lyon last term, where he scored 12 goals and set up a further 20.

Indeed, both players have been spoken highly of in the past. Football scout Antonio Mango described Akliouche as a “technically beautiful” footballer, with former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf praising Cherki for being “one of the best players already on earth” when it comes to his skilful nature.

On top of that, the stats from last term back up just how close these two players are. For example, the Moncao star averaged 0.71 goal-creating actions and 4.76 progressive carries per 90 minutes. In comparison, City’s new number 29 averaged 0.88 goal-creating actions and 4.67 progressive carries each game.

It is easy to see why Akliouche could be considered the second coming of Cherki. Both are left-footed, right-sided players who thrive with the ball at their feet and bring great skill to the pitch.

For a fee of £60m, this could be a perfect Rodrygo alternative for City and an excellent addition to their squad to improve their technical levels.

QPR now fighting Championship rivals for £2m+ striker who Stephan knows well

Queens Park Rangers are now among the teams keen on signing a £2.2 million striker who manager Julien Stephan has worked with before, according to a recent report.

QPR targeting multiple forwards

The West London side have added four players to their squad so far this summer, with the additions strengthening their defence and wide areas. Now the club’s focus has switched to their forward line, as they look to give Stephan the firepower he needs to avoid any threat of relegation and look upwards rather than over his shoulder.

QPR plotting move to sign 14-goal EFL striker as possible Kelman replacement

QPR are now interested in signing a League Two striker.

Jul 23, 2025

It looks increasingly likely that two strikers are set to leave the Championship side in the coming weeks, as it’s been reported that Alfie Young is set to leave on loan, while Luton Town have made an offer to sign Charlie Kelman, and the Rs are willing to cash in on the player for the right price. This comes after the centre-forward enjoyed a successful loan at League One side Leyton Orient last season.

QPR have already identified possible replacements for those two players, as it’s been reported that they are in talks to sign Pape Meissa Ba from German side Schalke 04. Those talks are said to be at an advanced stage.

Meanwhile, the Hoops are also interested in signing Samson Tovide from Colchester United. They want to add some youthful exuberance to their frontline, and they believe Tovide fits the bill, but they won’t stop there.

QPR in a race with Derby to sign Timothe Nkada

According to The Sun, QPR are interested in signing Timothe Nkada from French side Rodez.

The report states that as well as the Rs being interested, Derby County and Blackburn Rovers are also chasing the striker, who finished as the joint-top goalscorer in Ligue 2 last season with 17 goals.

The former France under-20 international is under contract until 2027 at Rodez, but the French side have placed a price tag of £2.2 million on his head, as interest could soon gather pace. Nkada, who is mainly a striker but can also operate on either the left or right-hand side of the attack, joined Rodez in August 2024 and produced his best numbers to date, as 17 league goals surpassed the nine he scored in the previous campaign at FC Koper.

His goal-scoring exploits have placed him on the radar of a few Championship teams, but the Rs may hold an advantage when it comes to signing Nkada. Indeed, QPR boss Julien Stephan worked with the striker during their time in the youth setup at Rennes. Nkada netted 14 goals in 23 academy games in the 2018/19 season, and his relationship with Stephan could help the Rs get a deal over the line.

Liverpool make history with another Premier League late show as Mohamed Salah penalty at Burnley rewrites the record books

Liverpool made Premier League history with another late show at Burnley. Mohamed Salah converted a 95th-minute penalty to earn the reigning champions three points at Turf Moor. No top-flight team has ever won four games in a row in such dramatic circumstances, with Arne Slot’s side making a habit of securing vital victories as the clock ticks down.

Started the season in style at Anfield

Liverpool opened the defence of their top-flight crown in 2025-26 with a testing home date against Bournemouth. They threw away a two-goal lead in that contest before seeing Federico Chiesa and Salah find the target beyond the 88-minute mark.

Teenage wonderkid Rio Ngumoha then hit a 100th-minute winner in a five-goal thriller at Newcastle, before Dominik Szoboszlai struck a stunning 83rd-minute free-kick to secure a 1-0 win over Arsenal at Anfield.

Salah held his nerve at Turf Moor

It appeared as though points would be dropped during a visit to Burnley, but a moment of madness from Hannibal Mejbri saw him block the ball with his arm and concede a dramatic penalty. Salah made no mistake when slamming home from 12 yards.

"Terrific" £40m Premier League ace wants Newcastle move, Howe's a big fan

A “terrific” Premier League player sees Newcastle United as his preferred destination this summer, according to a fresh transfer claim from The Athletic.

Howe discusses Isak's Newcastle future

The future of Alexander Isak has been the summer’s main talking point at St James’ Park, with the Swede pushing for a move to Liverpool ahead of the new season.

Isak has been made to train away from his Newcastle teammates by Eddie Howe, with the manager no doubt not wanting an unhappy player around, and he spoke about the saga over the weekend.

“I think everything is in play. I’ve said many times he is contracted to us. He is our player. The club make the decision on his future. I don’t know what that will be. Of course I have a preferred outcome. I want the best and the strongest squad possible, but I also want players that really want to play for this football club.”

Newcastle United manager EddieHowebefore the match

Regardless of what happens with Isak, more signings are needed for Newcastle before the summer transfer window reaches its conclusion, and they have been boosted by the news that one individual would like to play for the club.

Aston Villa star Ramsey keen on Newcastle move

According to a new update from The Athletic, Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey sees Newcastle as his “preferred destination” this summer.

The report states that the Magpies “made an approach for the former England youth international in January 2024”, with Howe described as a “big fan” of his. While West Ham are also keen on signing the 24-year-old valued at £40m, “Newcastle’s project and the chance to work under Howe are thought to carry the greatest appeal” to him.

Jacob Ramsey in action for Aston Villa in pre-season.

This is a big positive for Newcastle, should their interest in Ramsey be as strong as it was last year, with the Villa ace a hugely talented footballer.

Granted, he arguably hasn’t quite kicked on as much as some predicted, but Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has hailed his ability, having managed him when he was at Villa Park.

“He’s not following in anyone’s footsteps. Jacob Ramsey is Jacob Ramsey. He will be a terrific player. It won’t be long before the whole country is watching him I’m sure. He is right up there, let me tell you.”

He'd replicate Isak: Newcastle make enquiry to sign "complete" £80m striker

With Alexander Isak still hoping to force a move to Liverpool, could Newcastle target a “complete” striker valued at £80m who’d replicate the Swede?

ByBen Gray Aug 12, 2025

Ramsey only started half of Villa’s 38 Premier League games last season, and he could feel that a new challenge is needed at this point in his career, seeing Newcastle as the ideal next step.

Next Strand Larsen: Wolves agree personal terms with "insane" £17m talent

Wolverhampton Wanderers need new recruits between now and Monday’s deadline if they’re going to stay in the Premier League.

So far, Vítor Pereira’s team have played two and lost two this season, demolished 4-0 by Manchester City on opening weekend, before another defeat on Saturday, this time at the hands of Bournemouth.

Tuesday’s comeback win over West Ham United in the Carabao Cup may spark reason for optimism, however, not least with man of the moment, Jørgen Strand Larsen, netting twice off the bench to power the Old Gold to victory.

That brace was just the latest headline-grabbing occasion for the Scandinavian sensation, with Pereira’s side perhaps now seeking to replicate that success with another exciting acquisition.

Wolves set for another La Liga recruit

With Matheus Cunha having departed for Manchester United, Larsen will be Wolves’ main man in attack.

He scored 14 Premier League goals last season, a very impressive return, before making the move from Celta Vigo permanent for around £23m earlier this summer.

His importance is why the club rejected a £50m bid for the Norwegian striker from Newcastle United earlier this week, although the Magpies are still hopeful of getting a deal done.

Meantime, it is being widely reported that Ladislav Krejčí is close to joining Wolves from Girona for £26m, set to undergo a medical in the coming days.

However, he is not the only La Liga player seemingly Molineux-bound.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

That’s because, according to a report by the Telegraph, Wolves have ‘agreed personal terms’ with Getafe midfielder Christantus Uche.

The Nigerian international is expected to cost around £17m, with reports in Spain suggesting Getafe are under pressure to sell in order to comply with LaLiga’s squad cost limit regulations, so will Uche soon swap Madrid for the Midlands?

What Wolves fans should expect from Christantus Uche

The 22-year-old has enjoyed an “insane” rise in the last 12 months or so, as per one content creator, given that he was playing for Ceuta in the Primera Federación, Spain’s third-tier, as recently as the 2023/24 season.

His form there earned him a move to Getafe last summer, his top-flight debut coming almost exactly a year ago, making 33 appearances in LaLiga last season, uniquely deployed all over the attacking area of the pitch by manager José Bordalás, utilised as a striker, a winger and an attacking midfielder.

His tally of four goals may not leap off the page, but it’s worth considering the fact that Azulones scored only 34 times as a team, the second-fewest in the division, outscoring only rock-bottom Real Valladolid.

Uche also commenced the new campaign by netting during Getafe’s 2-0 victory over Celta Vigo at Balaídos on the opening weekend, assisting Adrián Liso to score the other goal too, so let’s further examine his importance to Getafe.

As the table documents, Uche ranked in the top three at Getafe last season for all attacking metrics included, top of the pile in terms of assists, big chances created and goal-creating actions, underlining his importance.

Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout is certainly a fan, describing him as a “superb… box-to-box midfielder”, while elsewhere noting that “passing, physicality and work rate” are his biggest strengths.

So, why would he be such an excellent signing for Wolves?

Well, Uche is accustomed to playing for a struggling side, given that Getafe ranked second-bottom for average possession in LaLiga last season (41.2%), above only Espanyol.

During his own penultimate season in LaLiga, Strand Larsen also scored just four goals for Celta Vigo, before increasing that total to 13 prior to joining Wolves, and all available evidence suggests that Uche is capable of producing a similar increase.

Having seen the success that Tuesday’s Carabao Cup hero has enjoyed at Molineux to date, Wolves should well aim to repeat the trick with another exciting LaLiga import.
