Ex-England international Dele, who has struggled since bidding farewell to north London in 2022, finds himself in the free agent pool once again. He first hit that market after seeing his deal at Everton run down.

A fresh start was sought when heading to Italy, with Cesc Fabregas inviting the 29-year-old midfielder to join the ranks at Como. Another disastrous spell was endured there, which delivered just one substitute appearance – with that outing lasting less than 10 minutes after a red card was picked up against AC Milan.

Said appearance is the only one that Dele has made since February 2023. He is, however, seeing a return to British football mooted – potentially in the Championship, with Birmingham ruling themselves out of the running there.

Real Madrid legend Modric, who is now at AC Milan, could aid efforts to get a deal done as the Ballon d’Or winner is part of the ownership group at Swansea. He has vowed to use his experience to help “build an exciting future”.

GettyWHAT JACOBS SAID

Discussing Dele on , Ben Jacobs said: “I think Swansea City is going to be really interesting because Luka Modric is now part of that ownership group and from what I’m told he is having conversations with slightly older players and free agents to try and lure them over there.

“It wouldn’t at all surprise me from what I hear if Swansea City and Dele Alli becomes a thing over the next few weeks. Dele Alli won’t get an opportunity in my opinion in a big-five league after it didn’t work out at Como but maybe a Championship club on a short-term deal.”

Inter invested a major portion of their summer trying to bring Lookman to San Siro but Atalanta's strict stance on not budging in their €50 million (£43m/$58m) player valuation resulted in the deal to fall through. Lookman is no longer interested in moving to Inter with the club now monitoring Lyon's Fofana, according to . The Italian club also made a deadline day move for Everton's Ndiaye, launching a €45m (£39m/$52m) bid, but were swiftly turned down in their pursuit.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Inter were pushing to sign Lookman for much of the summer but Atalanta were extremely adamant of not offloading the star player to a domestic rival, not at least until their demands were met. The situation turned messy further with Lookman's public transfer request which irked the Atalanta support and hierarchy. The 2024 Champions League finalist switched their interest to Ndiaye at the end days of the transfer window but it was too late by then. Reportedly, Bayern Munich also approached Atalanta to sign Lookman on the deadline day.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

A Gent academy product, Fofana was signed by Lyon last year in deal worth €17m (£14m/$19m) plus €5m in add-ons. The Belgian club also inserted a 20% sell-on clause in Fofana's contract. The winger played a total of 41 games across all competition last year in which he scored 11 goals and registered six assists. Fofana has had an astounding start to the 2025-26 season as well, having already scored a goal and provided an assist in the first three games of the league.

'We can't influence them!' – Joshua Kimmich argues Premier League can easily 'pull massive transfer fees out of their sleeves' as Bayern Munich star says players not to blame for ever-increasing spending

Joshua Kimmich hit out at the transfer market spiral, insisting that the players can’t be blamed as he pointed to the Premier League’s vast resources.

Bayern star stunned by soaring transfer feesPremier League’s wealth widens financial gapPlayers powerless in football’s market spiralFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Bayern hero Kimmich has voiced his concerns about the ever-growing transfer fees in football, admitting that neither players nor fans can truly make sense of the astronomical sums being paid in today’s market. The German star spoke ahead of the national team’s World Cup qualifiers against Slovakia, making it clear that players cannot influence the spiraling prices. His comments come in the wake of strong criticism from Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeness, who recently slammed the transfer market’s direction.

Clubs in the Premier League were highlighted as the clearest examples of the financial gap. With Liverpool signing Florian Wirtz for £116 million ($156m) and Alexander Isak for £125m ($169m). as well as Newcastle’s extraordinary £69m ($93m) move for Nick Woltemade, where they beat Bayern to his signature, underline the widening imbalance between Germany and England.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT KIMMICH SAID

Kimmich admitted that even players struggle to understand the sums being thrown around and insisted that they can’t be blamed for the explosion in fees.

"It's hard to grasp, both for us players and for the average fan, how much money is paid for a player," he said. "We can't control the sums either, and to be honest, we can't really influence them either. Especially when such transfer sums are being paid, at the end of the day, you have to say that, of course, it's the market that determines these sums."

Pointing to the Premier League as the driving force behind inflated prices, Kimmich highlighted the structural advantage of English clubs: "If you look at the Premier League, there are obviously financial resources available, both through ownership and TV money, so they can apparently easily pull these sums out of their sleeves."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kimmich’s frustration reflects a broader issue here with the Premier League’s financial dominance has pushed transfer spending to historic highs. According to a recent transfer report by FIFA, men’s football clubs invested a record $9.76 billion in international transfers, a staggering new benchmark. For Bundesliga sides like Bayern, once seen as among the biggest spenders in Europe, competing with English clubs is becoming increasingly unrealistic.

The Bundesliga champions missed out on major targets this summer, including Wirtz, whose price was simply unattainable. For German football, this raises questions not just about competitiveness but about the long-term sustainability of clubs that can’t match the Premier League’s resources.

Domestically, Bayern will look to refocus on the pitch, with their Bundesliga campaign continuing against Hamburger SV on September 13 at the Allianz Arena. They currently sit top of the league, but Kimmich’s candid reflections show that transfer frustrations linger in the background at Bavaria.

Kohli becomes India's highest scoring Test captain

He went past Sunil Gavaskar and MS Dhoni to take the record

Shiva Jayaraman26-Jan-2018Kohli scores tough runs
On a pitch that was extremely difficult to bat on for most of the day – and misbehaved enough to trigger an official discussion on whether it was safe enough to continue playing on – Virat Kohli made 41 runs from 79 deliveries to help India along to a total that gave them the chance to score an elusive away win and only their third Test win in South Africa. During the course of the innings he went past MS Dhoni and Sunil Gavaskar to become India’s highest scoring Test captain. He has made 3456 runs at 65.20 in Tests while leading India.Early in his innings, Kohli was hit on the thumb while playing forward to a ball that climbed off a length from Kagiso Rabada. However, that didn’t stop the India captain from getting on to the front during the course of the rest of his stay at the crease: off the rest of the 40 balls that were bowled at him on full or good lengths, Kohli played forward to at least 17 balls. Kohli made 27 runs off 47 balls off those lengths at a strike rate of 57.44. On a pitch that troubled the batsmen with unpredictable bounce off full and good lengths, Kohli batted well to return a control percentage of 72.34% off those lengths.Kohli’s tally of 95 runs in this Test took his aggregate for the series to 286 runs – the second-most scored by an India batsman in a series in South Africa. No India captain has made as many runs as Kohli has in this series. Before Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar’s 241 runs in three matches in 1996-97 were the highest by an India captain in a series in South Africa. Rahane makes it look easy
Sat out of the first two Tests of the series, Rahane came in to bat with India 93 runs ahead. He looked the most comfortable batsman on the third day, scoring rapidly off lengths that were troubling batsmen at the other end. Rahane faced 33 deliveries pitched on full and good lengths, and was in control of his shots a whopping 90.00% of the time – easily the best control shown by any of the India batsmen.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar added 33 runs to his crucial contribution of 30 runs in the first innings making him only the second India batsman in this match to get 30 or more runs in both innings. In a series in which batsmen have struggled to put together meaningful partnerships, his 55-run stand with Rahane in India’s second innings was the second time he added 50 or more runs with a partner in these Tests. Out of the six fifty-plus stands India have had in the series, only Kohli has been involved in more such stands. In fact, Bhuvneshwar has faced more balls per dismissal in this series than any other India batsman. In four innings that he has batted, Bhuvneshwar has faced 252 balls, getting dismissed three times.

Ponting: 'The Impact Player rule almost negates the role of allrounders'

The Delhi Capitals head coach, however, expects Mitchell Marsh to play a big part in the upcoming season

Shashank Kishore24-Mar-20231:36

Tom Moody: Impact Player rule might make it harder to develop Indian allrounders

The new Impact Player rule at IPL 2023 could well mean curtains for “bits and pieces allrounders”. This is the view of Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting, who spoke of the several possibilities this could open up in terms of team combination and strategy. As things stand, the Impact Player can only be an Indian unless there are fewer than four overseas players in the starting XI.Related

How much impact will the Impact Player rule have?

Ponting expects 'the real Prithvi Shaw' to make an appearance in IPL 2023

'My best can match it with anyone' – Mitchell Marsh

David Warner to lead Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023

Pant: I've found happiness in even being able to brush my teeth

“It [usage of Impact Player] depends if you bat or bowl first,” Ponting said at an event in New Delhi. “So at the toss, we will be putting in a bowling-first team and a batting-first team. And obviously if you bat first, you’re probably going to sub in a batter. Or if you bat first and lose an early wicket, you might want to bring in a batter straight on top of that. So there are a number of different ways to use it.”It actually almost negates the role of allrounders in the game now. So unless they’re absolutely world-class and they’re getting picked either as a batsman or as a bowler, not sort of a bits and pieces guy, then I don’t think you’ll see many, many teams this year actually use the guy that might bat at seven and maybe bowling over or two. Because you don’t need those guys anymore.”The one allrounder who Capitals will definitely be keeping an eye out for, though, is Mitchell Marsh. He has just finished an ODI series in India, which Australia won 2-1, where he played as a specialist batter due to his ongoing recovery from a keyhole surgery on his left ankle. Come the IPL, he is expected to ease himself back to full tilt.Marsh had a decent IPL 2022 at the top of the order, scoring 251 runs in eight games at a strike rate of 132.80. He only bowled sporadically, though; his 12 overs fetching four wickets at an economy of 8.50. Ponting is confident Marsh will have a bigger role to play this season.1:27

Ponting: No Pant leaves big hole, still undecided on wicketkeeper

“He’s had three or four months off in Australia; he’s recovered from an ankle surgery that he had, I think back in November,” Ponting said. “He hasn’t bowled in the games yet, but he’s been bowling for the last five or six weeks. So by the time he gets here with us, his role in our team will be to bowl some overs as well. He knows that and understands that.”And I think we saw in this one-day series [against India] how destructive he can be [at the top of the order]. But we also saw on a couple of occasions last year for DC [Delhi Capitals] at the No. 3 slot he played some match-winning roles there as well. So he’s a really important player for us. World-class international allrounders are not easy to come across and not easy to find. So are hoping that he has his best IPL season till date as well.”The biggest concern at the moment for Capitals is filling in the void left by Rishabh Pant, who continues to recover from injuries sustained in a serious car crash in December last year. David Warner has been named as stand-in captain for the season, but the team management is yet to decide on who will be taking the wicketkeeping gloves. They have just one frontline option at the moment in England’s Phil Salt, but are readying a couple of makeshift options in India’s Manish Pandey and Sarfaraz Khan. Both players are being put through the paces, should the need arise. In addition, they have also called up four uncapped Indian wicketkeepers – Luvnith Sisodia, Sheldon Jackson, Abishek Porel and Vivek Singh – to their training camp. It’s likely one of them will be signed as a replacement shortly. All said, Ponting believes it will take multiple players to fill the hole Pant has left behind.”So when we are talking about losing some power in middle-order, Aman Khan, Rovman Powell and someone like Axar Patel, whose batting has improved a lot in last 12 months, we will find ways to cover for Rishabh, but we will not get same quality player,” Ponting said. “Aman Khan is one that has really impressed us and we traded Shardul (Thakur) with KKR [Kolkata Knight Riders] to get him in and he has been ultra-impressive and I don’t know how much you have seen of him and his last couple of days at training has been pretty special.”

'Like Australia without Lanning' – Marizanne Kapp on SA leaving Dane van Niekerk out

Marizanne Kapp has likened leaving Dane van Niekerk out of South Africa’s T20 World Cup side to ripping Meg Lanning out of the Australia team.As the hosts prepare for a must-win clash with the Australians at her home ground of St George’s Park on Saturday night, Kapp called on South Africa’s senior players to step up against the title favourites. But she believed the absence of van Niekerk – also her wife – left a hole in the team.”If you ask anyone, they’re going to lie if they say no,” Kapp told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s like taking a Meg Lanning out of the Australian team. She is definitely missed but I think the girls have been coping well and now it’s up to the seniors to put up their hands.”This past year has been extremely tough for Dane. She’s really been struggling, she’s been working hard and to miss out at the end there, by that close, it really hurts her. She took her time to try and get over it. It still hurts, I know when I speak to her it still hurts but I think she’s been coping well. It’s been helping that she’s been commentating so you kind of still feel like she’s involved in the World Cup. Luckily now with the WPL, she got to a gig there so I think for her confidence that would be good if she just gets on the park again.”It has been a turbulent time for Kapp after van Niekerk was left out of the World Cup squad for failing the 2km time trial element of the selection criteria while attempting a comeback from a broken ankle suffered more than a year ago. Kapp took leave from the team during their tri-series final against India to return home and rejoined the squad ahead of the World Cup, where van Niekerk is now working as a commentator.”It’s been difficult, I’m not going to lie,” Kapp said. “But I think it was for all the girls. You never want distractions in and around your team, especially heading into a big tournament like this. I was a bit annoyed with the whole situation and all of that just because I felt like it probably could have got dealt with a bit earlier and not in the middle of a series, that’s why I went home. But that’s the past now and we’re moving on. We’ve not been at our best but we’ve been sticking together as a team and I guess that’s sport and that’s life so you just have to carry on and we have a job to do.”‘We’re still not near playing our best cricket so hopefully we keep on improving’•ICC/Getty Images

On top of all that was the WPL auction. Kapp is heading to Delhi Capitals for 1.5 crore (USD 183,000 approx) and van Niekerk picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore for her base price of 30 lakh (USD 37,000 approx). Then followed the announcement of retentions for the Women’s Hundred, where Oval Invincibles kept hold of Kapp but not van Niekerk, who has now registered for the draft. Moreover, Kapp has been battling illness which prevented her from training after Monday’s win until Friday. But she had a solid hit out in the nets and a bowl on the eve of the Saturday fixture. With her hometown of Gqeberha having never hosted a women’s international, Kapp said she was determined to play.”It’s going to be very special for me personally,” she said. “I’ve always nagged them that I want to at least play one game at home before I retire one day, so it’s a big day and hopefully there’s quite a few people coming out tomorrow so I’m really excited.”Tomorrow might be a bit of a struggle, but I’m hoping to go out there and play. The girls have been preparing really well. So we know what we have to do tomorrow. It’s a big game for us as a team and then for me personally. I wouldn’t want to miss tomorrow, that’s why I came out today to train and see how I feel, but definitely up for the challenge.”South Africa were on the back foot after losing the first game of the tournament against Sri Lanka, who now sit second behind Australia in group A with one more game, against New Zealand on Sunday, to play. South Africa face Bangladesh in the final match of the group stage, after which Sri Lanka, New Zealand and South Africa could potentially all be locked on four points behind Australia. New Zealand, who were thumped by Australia and South Africa, defeated Bangladesh on Friday to give themselves hope, although the margin of their first two defeats hit their net run rate significantly.”We were just so annoyed with ourselves,” Kapp said about losing the first game. “If I’m being honest, we were probably a bit laid back going into that Sri Lanka game, especially after winning that tri-series. You don’t go out there to not perform well, but I think it was just a bit of a wake-up call for us and we kind of rocked up to the World Cup a bit later and now we kind of have to pay for that. Luckily we brought it back in that second game. We’re still not near playing our best cricket so hopefully we keep on improving.”South Africa have never beaten Australia in a T20I and Lanning’s side are undefeated at this tournament. But Kapp dismissed that record, saying “tomorrow’s a new day”. The last time the sides met in the format was at the previous edition of this tournament, in their rain-affected semi-final which eventual champions Australia won by five runs.Shelley Nitschke, Australia’s head coach, said: “They have nothing to lose, so we expect them to throw everything at us and we need to make sure we’re ready. They’ve got some really damaging players, both with bat and ball, that can take a game away from us and they have the support of the home crowd, so we need to make sure we are on our game.”

City had the opportunity to restore parity in the FA Cup final after Eberechi Eze broke the deadlock in the 16th minute from Munoz's assist. Just past the half-hour mark, Tyrick Mitchell brought down Bernardo Silva inside the area and a penalty was awarded to the Cityzens. Haaland, being the club's designated penalty taker, was expected to take the spot-kick, but to everyone's surprise, he handed over the ball to Marmoush.

It was Marmoush's first penalty kick since signing for City in January, but he squandered the opportunity as his effort was saved by Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson. Before moving to England, Marmoush had converted all of the previous seven penalties he had taken for Eintracht Frankfurt. Haaland, meanwhile, has scored four penalties out of seven attempts for City across all competitions this season.

WHAT DANIEL MUNOZ SAID

Now Palace full-back Munoz has revealed why the Norwegian handed over the penalty kick to Marmoush. Speaking to , the 28-year-old said: "I asked him why he didn’t take the penalty, since he was the team’s top scorer. And he told me that his team-mate was also a good kicker. So, I told him, 'If you don’t take the penalty, he’ll miss.' And he missed."
