Clark vs Barnard in Oval showdown

Opening day of Surrey vs Warwickshire defined by two allrounders and outstanding signings

Matt Roller10-May-2024This was a day defined by the performances of two allrounders who have been among the outstanding county signings of the modern era: Jordan Clark, the underestimated linchpin of Surrey’s back-to-back Championship titles, and Ed Barnard, who needs four runs on Saturday to complete his maiden first-class hundred as a Warwickshire player.Clark showed some promise as a red-ball cricketer in his Lancashire days: he dismissed Joe Root, Kane Williamson and Jonny Bairstow as part of a Roses hat-trick in 2018, which proved to be his final season at the club. But when he arrived at Surrey, the defending champions, it was hard to see how he would become a regular feature in their Championship side.He has done that and more, playing a pivotal role in their recent success. His batting and bowling averages for the club are near-identical (28.20 and 28.23 respectively) and he has thrived as a first-change bowler in a four or five-man seam attack. Last week, he struck 106 not out off 102 balls in Surrey’s convincing victory over Hampshire.Related

Clark burst this game open for Surrey after Warwickshire’s bright start, racing to 50 for 0 in 10 overs after being asked to bat first. He struck in his second over, going wide on the crease and nipping one back past Alex Davies’ leave to uproot his off stump; when Sean Abbott trapped Rob Yates lbw in his next over, Warwickshire had lost both openers inside three balls.Sam Hain made his return to the Warwickshire side after missing the start of the season for personal reasons, and started brightly after twin hundreds for the seconds last week. But he was incorrectly given out caught behind on the stroke of lunch to Kemar Roach, who then had Jacob Bethell caught at second slip – after Dom Sibley parried the initial chance at first – after lunch. And Clark struck regularly through the day, as if to prove his worth: he trapped Dan Mousley on the knee roll, had Will Rhodes well caught at slip by Sibley, and induced a chop-on from Michael Burgess with the old ball which left his leg stump on the ground. That left Warwickshire 222 for 7, and in danger of missing out on a single batting bonus point. But by the close, Barnard had guided them to 318 for 8, scoring heavily through cover-point. He added 50 for the eighth wicket with Aamer Jamal and an unbroken 41 with No. 10 Craig Miles, and should complete his sixth first-class hundred – and first since leaving Worcestershire – on Saturday morning, as Warwickshire target a third batting point.Rhodes was Warwickshire’s captain at the time they brought Barnard in, and recalls a queue of counties attempting to sign him. “That sort of cricketer comes few and far between and to have him here is fantastic,” he said. “It’s a massive help for the team if he can score these runs at No. 6 and then contribute with the ball.”With Tim Bresnan moving on, we were looking for that No. 6 or 7 who could bowl a lot of overs, and he’s probably one of the best in the country in the role. When he cropped up and said that he was looking to leave Worcester, we jumped at the chance to get him. He’s been an outstanding signing.”It is a running joke in the Warwickshire dressing room that Barnard always “misses out on flat ones”. At the start of the season, he made 1 off 4 balls in a team total of 698 for 3 declared against Durham at Edgbaston. “But he certainly cashed in today,” Rhodes said with a smile.Warwickshire have been involved in four draws out of four at the start of this season but this match looks likely to have a result. Their 318 for 8 is already the second-highest score that Surrey have conceded this year – behind Somerset’s 351 all out – and they have an opportunity to stamp their mark on this game on Saturday.

‘Immature and naive’ – Alexi Lalas calls out USMNT’s Tyler Adams for defending teammate Christian Pulisic and criticizing pundits

The analyst responded to Adams' comments about media criticism directed at Pulisic and the USMNT

  • Lalas called Adams' defense of Pulisic "aloof"
  • Questioned Adams' understanding of media's role
  • Defended right to criticize following Gold Cup
  • Getty Images Sport

    WHAT HAPPENED

Fox Sports analyst and USMNT legend Alexi Lalas pushed back on Tyler Adams’ defense of Christian Pulisic, questioning the U.S. international midfielder's suggestion that the media should support rather than critique the star, especially after Pulisic skipped this summer’s Gold Cup.

Adams criticized the pundits who called out Pulisic, especially opinionated former USMNT players, saying "everyone wants to throw his name in the gutter because it creates a big story, or it creates noise."

“This was a strangely immature and naive, and weak kind of take," Lalas said on his State of the Union podcast.  "Not that he's defending Christian Pulisic, because we're all going to do that. But the way he seemed to think that there should be no criticism and we should all be kumbaya. And he talks often about, you know, some of the some of the players.”

Lalas indicated he appreciated Adams' voicing his opinion, but he thought the defense wasn't well-informed.

“I can appreciate and respect the fact that Tyler Adams was asked a question and he's not shying away from this,” he said. "Doesn't mean you can't defend yourself, doesn't mean you can't defend your teammates. But to be – at least in the way that he's painted himself – blindsided by this? Again, it's just for someone that I have a lot of respect for – and I think is very smart, and the way that he has talked over the years is sometimes beyond his years – maybe he showed a little bit of his youthful naivete in this article here.”

    WHAT LALAS SAID

Lalas said Adams showed a fundamental misunderstanding of professional sports dynamics.

“OK, so Tyler, if you can't explain it and you don't understand it, then you're – if I’m being charitable – naive… You've been around the block. This is not your first rodeo," Lalas said. "But this notion that everybody should be on board and nobody should criticize… the fact that it's so surprising to him that anybody – whether it's guys like myself or others that do this for a living – I just think that it's being a little, like I said, naive and aloof to the reality of the situation, that, by the way, Tyler Adams, you and your players have created.

"And that's why the change [from Gregg Berhalter to Pochettino] was made. And when you go out in the Nations League [early] and we're worried about what we’re going to do next summer – such an important summer – I think it's completely logical for any player that's been around to understand that you were going to come in for criticism."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Prior to winning five games in a row to reach the 2025 Gold Cup final, the USMNT lost consecutive games to Panama, Canada, Turkey, and Switzerland by a combined scoreline of 9-2.

Wayne Rooney has epic response as he pokes fun at Jack Grealish's decision to take on iconic No. 18 shirt at Everton

Wayne Rooney couldn’t resist a playful jab at Jack Grealish after the England winger chose Everton’s famous No.18 shirt, a number steeped in Merseyside football folklore. This summer, the jersey was up for grabs again after veteran Ashley Young’s departure, and Grealish, fresh from sealing a loan switch from Manchester City, wasted no time in claiming it.

Grealish, who has previously been synonymous with the No.10 at both City and Aston Villa, admitted he was swayed by the heritage tied to his new digits. With Iliman Ndiaye currently in possession of the Toffees’ No.10, Grealish saw No.18 not as a compromise, but as a connection to two icons he grew up admiring.

He admitted: "There is a reason for [choosing number 18]. There were other numbers but my two favourite English players ever are Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne and I know they both wore number 18 here. So, as soon as I knew this deal was close, I had a look and number 18 was free, so that was perfect for me and it was the only number I was going to take from that point."

Rooney himself donned it when, as a fearless 16-year-old, he thundered in that unforgettable match-winner against Arsenal, announcing his arrival to the football world. Before him, Paul Gascoigne carried the number during his colourful two-season stint at the club. And, as Rooney was happy to point out, a certain Phil Neville has also enjoyed time in the 18 on Merseyside.

WHAT ROONEY SAID

The banter unfolded live on BBC’s Match of the Day when the host told Rooney about Grealish’s decision, adding that the winger claimed the two had discussed it “over a roast dinner.” Rooney, grinning, brushed it off in good humour.

"Yeah, it was… No, listen, Jack's a fantastic player and, yeah, and we did speak about it in tongue-in-cheek, really, in terms of the number 18 shirt," he admitted. "Unfortunately Phil Neville wore it as well!

"For Jack, I think it's a great opportunity. Obviously, it's a massive football club and a great fan base, and I think for Jack to go in there and go and be one of the main players, it's an opportunity for him to go and shine, get Everton back up the table where they need to be and, obviously, try and put himself in Thomas Tuchel's plans again."

O duro golpe fez o Goiás sentir.

Theo Walcott urges Eberechi Eze to snub Arsenal transfer as he issues shock 'grass isn't always greener' advice to £68m-rated Crystal Palace winger

Former Arsenal star Theo Walcott has surprisingly urged Eberechi Eze to snub a move to the Gunners this summer and stay at Crystal Palace.

Eze linked with Arsenal and TottenhamHas played starring role for Crystal PalaceWalcott thinks he should stay at Selhurst ParkFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Eze's future at Crystal Palace seems uncertain at present amid reported interest from Arsenal and Tottenham. Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has also seemingly refused to rule a summer exit for Eze or Marc Guehi, admitting that "players come and go" after seeing the Eagles beat Liverpool in the Community Shield.

Arsenal have already invested heavily this summer by bringing in players like Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke and Christian Norgaard, and Walcott has revealed why he thinks England international Eze may be better off staying at Selhurst Park.

WHAT WALCOTT SAID

He told : "If he has a good season at Palace, he will go to the World Cup, I’m pretty sure of that… then what other teams will have a look at him after that? If I was Eze, I would probably stay put just because it’s World Cup year. If it wasn’t World Cup year then I would probably move on. These opportunities might not come again, though, so that’s the risk these players have got to take. But for me, World Cup year is a big year and I just feel that the grass isn’t always greener. I love the way Eze plays at Palace at this moment in time and it would look very different at Arsenal. He would improve Arsenal, 100 per cent, but I just feel that World Cup year is a big factor for a lot of players this year."

Sir Gareth Southgate breaks silence on 'strange' Poland job links as ex-England boss clarifies whether he is looking for route back into management

The former England manager was linked with the Poland job after Michal Probierz resigned following a bitter feud with captain Robert Lewandowski. Reports suggested the Polish Football Association eventually snubbed the ex-Middlesbrough player but now he has dismissed that speculation.

He told the PA News Agency: "I am kind of used to it [rumours]. I mean, I was linked with the Poland job, which I knew nothing about, so that was a strange one. Southgate, who this week was honoured at the PFA awards for his outstanding contribution to football, has been out of work since resigning from the England post last year. He brought the Three Lions within touching distance of a major international trophy and now many are wondering if he will go back into management again.

Southgate may continue to be linked with managerial jobs but for the time being, he is enjoying his time away from the dugout.
