According to , Barcelona find themselves in dire straits as the City Council might not issue their First Occupancy license after approving the Activities and Construction license last week. In order to complete the lower level and initial seating tiers of the stadium, the club need to be granted a First Occupancy license, which can then give them access to a 60,000 capacity in the stadium. But due to the constraints, they can host only 25,000 fans for the Joan Gamper Trophy match against Como on August 10. Barca have also planned a drill, without fans, in late July, to test the operations.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Last week's decision received a warm welcome as the club could now start selling off the premium VIP seats, which is part of a €100 million 30-year revenue plan and crucial to their hopes of complying with La Liga's financial rules. However, the club need complete approval by late July for the Joan Gamper Trophy and a delay could force the game to be shifted to Estadi Johan Cruyff, which has a 6,000 capacity. The Estadi Olimpic is also an option, but it has a concert scheduled for August 9, one day prior to Barca's game against Cesc Fabregas' side.

Perry, Sutherland and Wareham help Australia level the series

India were restricted to a below par total batting first in Mumbai

Deepti: We’re not far from winning a series against Australia

A disciplined bowling effort and a memorable cameo from Ellyse Perry, on her 300th international game, handed Australia a six-wicket win in the second T20I against India, helping them level the series 1-1, with one game to go at the DY Patil Stadium, on Sunday. After being asked to bat first, India were restricted to 130, thanks to Annabel Sutherland and Georgia Wareham, who shared four wickets between them and conceded just 35 runs in their eight overs. India batted contrastingly to the first T20I – where they chased down 141 with nine wickets to spare – and kept losing wickets regularly to end up with a below-par total. As evident from the series opener, the target never looked threatening with dew also coming into play.Wareham, Sutherland keep India at bayIndia lost Shafali Verma – who was the top-scorer two days ago with her 64 not out – early, with Kim Garth trapping her in front for 1. Garth had come in for Darcie Brown and ended up being named Player of the Match for her efforts.Australia did their homework well and kept a sweeper cover for Smriti Mandhana in the powerplay to contain and it worked. Garth picked up her second when Jemimah Rodrigues nicked an outswinger to the keeper in the fourth over. Mandhana, who looked good for her 23, was unable to convert her start, falling to Sutherland’s short ball while trying to go big. India were down to 42 for 3 in the eighth over.Georgia Wareham celebrates the dismissal of Richa Ghosh•BCCI

It soon became 54 for 4 as Harmanpreet Kaur’s poor run of form continued. In the last seven T20I innings, she has crossed 30 only once and is yet to reach double-digits in this series against Australia, across formats. Once Harmanpreet departed in the 11th over, Richa Ghosh and Deepti looked to pick up pace. They put on 33 runs for 24 balls.Just when the partnership seemed to be building, Wareham dismissed Ghosh, courtesy of a late review from Alyssa Healy. It was a full-length delivery, pitching just in line to trap the batter lbw, though it initially looked like it might have pitched slightly outside leg. In her next over, the legspinner struck Pooja Vastrakar in front, with Healy once again getting the review right.India collected just 32 runs off the last four overs with Sutherland’s change of pace keeping the scoring down. She dismissed Amanjot Kaur in the 18th over and ended with figures of 2 for 18 from four overs. Wareham, who was also equally economical, conceded 17 from her four. That India had a total of 57 dot balls is something that they would want to look at in this format, moving forward.Perry shines after brisk opening standAustralia started rapidly in the chase, helped in part by the dew that had come in. Healy used the fielding restrictions in the powerplay to her advantage, coming down the track and lofting the ball over the fielders in the ring to find boundaries. Beth Mooney, who was not as fluent as her captain, still ran hard between the wickets to take the quick singles. At the end of six overs, they were 47 for 0.Deepti Sharma troubled Australia briefly•BCCI

India tried Renuka Thakur, Titas Sadhu and Shreyanka Patil in the powerplay, but they couldn’t restrict run flow nor get a breathrough. Sadhu, who picked up a four-wicket haul in the opening game, was smashed for 12 runs in her first over and taken off the attack. She was much better in her second spell, conceding nine runs in two overs. It took until the introduction of Deepti Sharma for Australia to look in any kind of trouble. The offspinner dismissed Healy for 26, breaking the 51-run opening stand, with her first delivery, when Patil took an excellent low catch at long-on. In her second over, Deepti forced Mooney to come down the track and when she failed to make contact, keeper Ghosh had her stumped for a 29-ball 20.Deepti varied her lengths and pace to keep India in the game, conceding just nine runs from her first three overs. Patil then dismissed Tahlia McGrath in the 14th over after she smashed three fours in her 21-ball stay with Australia’s equation eventually coming down to 42 from 36.Whatever hope India had at that stage was then destroyed by Perry and Phoebe Litchfield, who shared an unbroken stand of 36 from just 20 balls. Both the batters struck at more than 150, with Perry remaining unbeaten on 34 off 21 deliveries and Litchfield chipping in with 18 not out. In her 300th international game, Perry finished the game in style, with a six over deep midwicket with an over to spare.

Colin Graves set for Yorkshire return as board accepts financial bail-out

Consortium’s offer will be ratified at EGM next month, as former chair prepares for controversial return

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Jan-2024Colin Graves’ return as Yorkshire chairman looks set to be ratified next month, after the club’s board approved a restructured loan agreement from the consortium that he heads up.The prospect of Graves’ return to the role that he held between 2012-15 comes after Yorkshire this week claimed that it had spoken to more than 350 interested parties, but that his offer was the only one capable of warding off the financial peril faced by the club in the wake of the racism crisis that has engulfed it in recent seasons. In a statement, the club said: “The board of Yorkshire County Cricket Club has tonight agreed to recommend the loan agreement from Mr Colin Graves.” This is expected to involve an immediate injection of £1 million, followed by new investment worth £4 million.”The club will be sending a notice to members tomorrow [Thursday, 11 January] ahead of an EGM [extraordinary general meeting] which will outline the details of the offer as well as the resolutions and rule changes that are required to be ratified by members at the EGM.”Graves’ impending return is controversial, given that he was at the helm for some of the period that came under scrutiny during Azeem Rafiq’s testimony about his racist experiences at the club, for which Yorkshire was fined £400,000 and docked points for the 2023 season.Despite denying any knowledge of racism on his watch, Graves was last year criticised by the ECB for suggesting that some of the incidents raised had been “banter”.His involvement with Yorkshire began in 2002 when, as the founder of the Costcutter supermarket chain, he stepped in with another financial bail-out to save the club from bankruptcy. In March it was announced that the club had a £3.5 million shortfall and needed to repay approximately £14.9 million to the Graves Family Trust, which is managed by independent trustees.Speaking to talkSPORT on Tuesday, Graves said: “The ball is in the Yorkshire board’s court to make a decision, but my interest is real. It’s absolute, and that’s for one reason and one reason only, and it’s to save Yorkshire County Cricket Club. None of us wants to see that institution disappear.”Other potential sources of investment had included Mike Ashley, the former owner of Newcastle United, and the Saudi national investment fund.Writing in The Observer on Sunday, Rafiq criticised the “broken promises” that had paved the way for Graves’ return, and called for the club’s sponsors to reconsider their involvement – as had been the case when the scandal originally erupted in November 2021, when a raft of partners including Emerald, Adidas and Yorkshire Tea all withdrew their support. One current sponsor, local tiling company Al Murad, is believed to be monitoring the situation closely. The development has also attracted criticism from a local MP. Alex Sobel, the Labour member for Leeds North West, said he was “very concerned” by Graves’ return, and called for him to offer “not just a statement recanting his views but full commitment to create a club for the whole community.”

Bell-Drummond's elegant 70 steers Kent to calmer waters

Daniel Bell-Drummond hit an elegant 70 as Kent reached 113 for 3 on day one of their Vitality County Championship with Surrey at Canterbury. The in-form Kent skipper put on a stand of exactly 100 for the third wicket with Jack Leaning, who was 30 not out at stumps, after rain wiped out all but 11 balls of the first two sessions at the Spitfire Ground.Dan Worrall took 2 for 33 to reduce Kent to 8 for 2 in the sixth over, but Surrey went 30 overs without a wicket before Tom Lawes broke the partnership when he had Bell-Drummond lbw shortly before the close. The Kent and England legend Derek Underwood, who passed away on Monday aged 78, was honoured before the start of play, with both sets of players standing in front of the Underwood & Knott stand for a minute’s silence. Black armbands were worn and a moment was also taken to remember Raman Subba Row of Surrey, who died on Wednesday at the age of 92.It was a bitterly cold day for the die-hards at the St. Lawrence and the weather wiped out 57 overs before conditions finally improved, or at least got less damp, late in the afternoon. The visitors, who had do without Jamie Overton due to a back injury, won the toss and chose to bowl, but the start had already been delayed until 1.25pm and they managed just 11 deliveries before bad light forced them off again, the wind at that point being too strong for the floodlights to be used. When play eventually resumed at 4.15pm, Surrey struck early. Zak Crawley’s first Kent appearance of the season saw him make just 5 before Worrall had him caught by Jamie Smith at third slip and in his next over he trapped Ben Compton lbw for three. The partnership Kent urgently needed came when Leaning joined Bell-Drummond and they batted the home side into calmer waters.Bell-Drummond, who already has two centuries this season, punched Worrall for four through cover to bring up his 50, but he fell in the third-last over of the day when he was trapped leg before by Lawes. Night-watcher George Garrett was unbeaten on one at stumps.

Jamieson: ‘Last few days have been some of my most challenging’

New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Jamieson faces up to a year on the sidelines after being diagnosed with another stress fracture of his back.Jamieson felt soreness after the first Test against South Africa, where he took six wickets in the match, and was ruled out of the second in Hamilton, with subsequent scans revealing the injury. The latest injury is in the same part of the back as the one which he had previous surgery on last year although is a new fracture. He won’t undergo an operation on this occasion.Related

“The last few days have been some of my most challenging but I am hugely grateful for the support I’ve received from my partner, family, team-mates, support staff and medical professionals,” Jamieson said in a statement. “I know injuries are part of life as a cricketer and at my age I am hopeful I still have many more playing days ahead of me.”Speaking at a press conference later, Jamieson said the challenge of the recovery was as much mental as physical.”I’ve got a bit of a roadmap as to how to manage it,” he said. “I know some of the hurdles I’ll have to overcome, probably more mentally and emotionally, the physical side is the easy part. You just rest and build back up. It’s almost autopilot in a way.”It’s more the mental hurdles, months on end, you are halfway through and a fair bit of time has gone and there’s still a fair chunk of time away. It’s tough because you don’t want to go through it again. You hope that each time is the last time but I’m also 6’8” and trying to bowl fast, so know it’s definitely part of the journey.”Jamieson indicated that when he returns from this latest injury there may need to be an evaluation of how he prepares for red-ball cricket.”There’s a couple of patterns over the last couple of years, which you have to have these setbacks to notice them as patterns around the way you build-up for red-ball cricket,” he said. “I’ve played professionally for 10 years and my back’s been pretty good. History suggests that when you get that process right there’s still a lot of cricket to be played. I get a huge amount of hope from that. There’s been no healing issues in the past, it’s not like I’m a slow healer or don’t heal, so I get hope from that.”New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said: “We’ve all seen how much work Kyle has put into returning to international cricket and for him to have a setback like this is tough news to get.””On the positive side we know how determined he is to keep playing cricket for New Zealand and we will be fully behind him on the rehabilitation road ahead. His resolve is undiminished.”New Zealand’s squad for the first Test against Australia will be named on Monday. Will O’Rourke took nine wickets on his debut against South Africa having come into the attack alongside Neil Wagner.
