Australia’s World Test Championship and ODI World Cup defences will be shown exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. The streaming platform has secured the broadcast rights in Australia for all men’s and women’s International Cricket Council (ICC) tournaments.Foxtel/Kayo broadcast the entire recent ODI World Cup, while the Nine Network screened Australia’s games and a handful of others. But under this new deal there will be no free-to-air element. In Australia men’s home Tests and all women’s internationals remain on free-to-air with Seven, but men’s white-ball internationals are with Foxtel. Men’s away Ashes series in 2027 and 2031 will be shown on the Nine Network. The move comes just days after the federal government reaffirmed its commitment to sport anti-siphoning measures.Communications minister Michelle Rowland last week introduced laws to parliament updating anti-siphoning measures that would require free-to-air services to be offered first refusal for important sporting events.”All Australians regardless of where they live, or what they earn, should have the opportunity to enjoy free TV coverage of iconic sporting events,” Rowland said.ICC boss Geoff Allardice welcomed the partnership with Amazon.”We are very excited to be entering a new four-year partnership with Prime Video for ICC cricket rights in Australia,” he said in a statement. “The recently concluded men’s World Cup has highlighted the interest and passion for ICC events across the globe, and especially in Australia where cricket fans have enjoyed the recent success of their men’s and women’s teams.”We look forward to working with Prime Video Australia to provide an innovative coverage of world class cricket to more fans in Australia.”The new partnership between the ICC and Amazon, who also broadcast New Zealand’s home internationals into India, will begin in January with the men’s Under-19 World Cup with the first senior tournament being the men’s T20 World Cup in West Indies and the USA. Later in the year, Australia’s women will be involved in their T20 World Cup in Bangladesh during September and October.Meanwhile, Amazon also confirmed a third season of the documentary would be released in 2024 which will cover this year’s Ashes series in England which finished 2-2.”As a cricket fan, I couldn’t wait to see what happened when the unstoppable force of ‘BazBall’ batting came up against the best test bowling lineup in the world. The 2023 Ashes were the most closely contested and memorable of recent times, and I am delighted to be able to relive them along with our customers in Australia and around the world,” said Hushidar Kharas, head of Prime Video Australia and New Zealand. The first season of the followed the fallout of the 2019 ball-tampering scandal, while the second released last year followed the 2021-22 men’s Ashes and tours of Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Dave Houghton resigns as Zimbabwe head coach

He steps down from the role after Zimbabwe failed to qualify for the 2024 T20 World Cup

Dave Houghton will remain with ZC and will be reassigned to a different role at the organisation•Associated Press

Dave Houghton has resigned as Zimbabwe men’s head coach, 18 months after accepting the job last June. After Zimbabwe’s failure to qualify for the T20 World Cup and their defeat in both the ODIs and T20I series to Ireland, Houghton told ESPNcricinfo he felt the players were “not responding to my voice anymore.”Walter Chawaguta, who coached Zimbabwe in 2008, will take over as interim coach for the tour of Sri Lanka in January. ZC announced that Chawaguta will lead a support staff that includes Stuart Matsikenyeri (assistant coach/batting coach), Steve Kirby (bowling coach), Erick Chauluka (fielding coach), Walter Karimanzira (fitness and conditioning trainer), Amato Machikicho (physiotherapist), Alistair Chambe (team doctor) and Mufaro Chiturumani (analyst).Houghton will remain with ZC and will be reassigned to a different role at the organisation as he hopes to stay involved in the development of the country’s cricketers.”I have always had Zimbabwe cricket at heart and, though my coaching of the national team comes to an end, I would love to be involved in other areas,” Houghton said in a ZC statement. “The talent base in Zimbabwe is enormous. How we move players from talented to performing well on the international stage is a great project to be involved in.”ZC also indicated that they have parted ways with Houghton on good terms and chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani called him a “legend of our game,” who the organisation “regrets,” to let go from this role. “While the past few months have been disappointing as we failed to qualify for both the 50-over World Cup and the T20 World Cup, they should not obscure all the work he has done over the past year to rebuild the foundations for long-term success,” Mukuhlani said. “Dave leaves the team with our sincerest thanks for his tireless efforts and we are looking forward to working with him in a different role as we seek to change our on-field fortunes.”Related

Houghton slams 'embarrassingly bad' Zimbabwe loss to Namibia

Recent results are a major concern for Zimbabwe after they were defeated by Associate teams Namibia and Uganda at the recent T20 World Cup qualifier, where they became the only Full Member to miss out on the 2024 tournament. They also lost to Scotland at the ODI World Cup Qualifiers in July, which scuppered their hopes of participating in the recently concluded World Cup, despite winning the hearts of their nation. Zimbabwe had earlier in the competition beat West Indies and Houghton’s methods seemed to be working. While they did not take Zimbabwe to the 50-over World Cup, the highlight of his time in charge was the 2022 T20 World Cup, when Zimbabwe made it through the first round and into the Super 12s and players credited him with giving them the “freedom,” to express themselves. That tournament is the only World Cup out of a possible five that Zimbabwe have featured in over the last five years. They missed out on the 2019 and 2023 50-over World Cups and 2021 and 2024 T20 World Cups. As a consequence of not being at the 2023 World Cup, they will also not play in the 2025 Champions Trophy, which leaves their next opportunity for a men’s World Cup in 2026, at the T20 event. ZC has appointed a three-person committee, chaired by renowned lawyer Lloyd Mhishi, to look into the reasons behind the team’s failure to qualify for major tournaments and review the current structure.

Labuschagne holds fort as Pakistan make inroads on rain-hit Boxing Day

Stumps Marnus Labuschagne survived a thorough examination from a new-look Pakistan pace attack on a tough MCG surface as Australia finished a truncated opening day strongly in the Boxing Day Test.As had been forecast, bad weather gripped Melbourne in the afternoon with play stopped for almost three hours before restarting late in the day. Only 66 overs were bowled all day, but Australia lost just one wicket in the final session to move into a favourable position.Labuschagne and Steven Smith thwarted Pakistan after the resumption as batting appeared to get easier in sunny conditions. They added 46 off 147 balls to frustrate Pakistan until Smith was caught behind off Aamer Jamal, with replays confirming a faint edge after it was originally deemed not out and Pakistan reviewed.Related

Smith had moments earlier been given out lbw after being trapped by Shaheen Shah Afridi, but the decision was overturned on review. It deprived Afridi of his first wicket in the match on the back of figures of 2 for 172 in the series-opener. Like in Perth, Afridi struggled for top pace – it has been a bane for him in recent times.Labuschagne, who entered averaging a modest 35 this year, was made to work and by stumps had closed in on his half-century having faced 120 deliveries.Travis Head finished on 9 not out having survived a nervous moment in the last over when he edged offspinner Salman Agha but captain Shan Masood couldn’t hold on to a tough chance. After Pakistan copped a 360-run pummelling in the first Test on a spicy surface in Perth, their rejigged pace attack fought back from a wayward opening session with Afridi and recalled seamer Hasan Ali mustering an inspired spell after lunch in gloomy conditions.Hasan Ali was in good rhythm and was rewarded with Usman Khawaja’s wicket•Getty Images

Hasan justified his selection and was rewarded by having opener Usman Khawaja caught at second slip for 42 with a delivery that zipped off the wicket. He bowled in sync with Afridi, who threatened by bowling across right-hand batters Labuschagne and Smith and he occasionally made the ball jump off the pitch.Their sustained bowling on a good length forced Labuschagne and Smith to be in survival mode. With black clouds hanging over the ground, Labuschagne was clearly displeased about play continuing despite the light towers being switched on.But rain finally fell to give Australia respite, who only scored 24 runs in 15 overs after lunch.Hasan was one of three changes for Pakistan, who opted to again field an all-out pace attack with left-armer Mir Hamza also selected. They replaced injured seamer Khurram Shahzad and allrounder Faheem Ashraf, who was dropped, while offspinner Sajid Khan was overlooked. Mohammad Rizwan returned as wicketkeeper and took the place of Sarfaraz Ahmed, who had been contentiously preferred in Perth.Pakistan could have had a breakthrough in the third over itself, but Abdullah Shafique dropped David Warner in the slips•AFP/Getty Images

Australia named an unchanged line-up as they looked to wrap up the series and claim a 16th straight victory on home soil over Pakistan.Masood had no hesitation to bowl with the MCG in recent Test matches having heavily favoured pace bowling. Australia captain Pat Cummins said he also would have bowled first on a pitch with six to seven millimetres of grass.Pakistan needed early inroads for a confidence boost, but they started disastrously when opener David Warner was given a life on two after a horrific dropped catch at first slip by Abdullah Shafique. Afridi bowled a gem of a delivery on a length that moved away to catch the edge of a tentative Warner only for Shafique to drop a simple chance that went slowly to his left.Pakistan’s spirit dropped despite an encouraging new-ball spell from Hamza. Having taken just two wickets in three previous Test matches, Hamza didn’t bowl quickly but impressed by nipping the ball both ways, including bowling several menacing late inswinging yorkers. But Pakistan’s bowlers weren’t able to consistently hit the right areas as Khawaja and Warner built a 90-run partnership. There was plenty of support for Pakistan among the 62,000 that turned up at MCG•Icon Sportswire/Getty Images

Much like the build-up in Perth, Khawaja came into the match under the microscope after the ICC denied his application to display a logo to raise awareness of humanitarian issues. But he battled calmly as Australia closed in on a wicketless opening session for the second straight Test match until Warner fell to Salman in the last over before lunch. In the penultimate match of his illustrious Test career, Warner on 38 drove loosely to be caught at slip and Pakistan continued their momentum after the break. But Labuschagne proved a thorn before and after the rain break as he hoped to finish a lean year in Test cricket on a high. All eyes will continue to be on Melbourne’s infamously fickle weather with rain and potential thunderstorms again forecast on day two.A crowd of 62,000 fans attended the biggest date of the Australian cricket summer in a figure that surpassed the entire attendance over four days for the rebranded Perth Test.

Delphine Cascarino’s clutch brace helps France come from behind to beat the Netherlands and secure top spot ahead of England in Euro 2025 group

France entered Round 3 of the group stage of the 2025 European Championship as the leaders of Group D with two wins from their opening two games. The Netherlands, on the other hand, won their opener against Wales but then suffered a humiliating loss to England in Round 2. Heading into the clash, the Leeuwinnen knew that even a win would not be enough for them to reach the quarter-final of the Euros, as they would need the Lionesses to either draw or lose their clash against Wales.

The Oranje started the clash on the front foot but were quickly pushed onto the back foot as France almost opened the scoring via Sakina Karchaoui, who was denied by Arsenal goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar. Les Bleus did not look back after that as they continued to dominate the game before Sandie Toletti finally broke the deadlock for France with a half-volley into the Netherlands' goal.

However, the Oranje did not let their heads drop as they shifted gears and began countering France's press. Their first big chance came to Chasity Grant, who struck a thunderous volley but was denied by Pauline Peyraud-Magnin only to see Pelova pick up the pieces and fire into the top corner. The Dutch then had total control over the clash as they threatened the French goal on multiple occasions; however, the Netherlands' lead came after Les Bleus defender Selma Bacha turned over a threatening pass from Lineth Beerensteyn into her own goal.

The second half saw the French come back into their own as they dominated proceedings yet again, as the Dutch players seemed to withdraw into their shells. It was at the hour mark that the Netherlands lost the ball on the halfway line before Cascarino played in Marie-Antoinette Katoto, who slotted the ball for the equaliser. What followed was a blinding storm from France as they added two more goals in the next six minutes, with Cascarino scoring both.

In the end, the Netherlands' hopes were short-lived as their loss and England's win saw them crash out of the group stage of the 2025 Euros.

San Diego Wave star Cascarino had a rather dull first half as she could not break the Dutch defence. However, it was the second half that saw her come into her own as she managed to bag one assist and two goals all within six minutes of the game, while keeping Netherlands defenders Kerstin Casparij and Dominique Janssen on their toes as she moved in and out of the centre of the field. Her first goal on the night saw her toy with Janssen before letting rip on a 22-yard strike past Van Domselaar.

Former Manchester City star Jill Roord was not directly at fault for any of France's goals; however, her night saw her fail to dominate the midfield for the Netherlands as she lost possession on 12 occasions and also lost the ball for Cascarino's second goal of the night.

Masood keen to cast net wide in forming first Test attack

Who supports senior quicks Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hasan Ali is a key question for Pakistan

Andrew McGlashan07-Dec-2023Pakistan are using their four-day match in Canberra to assess the balance of the side they may take into next week’s first Test with at least one fast bowling spot up for grabs, although the key decisions will still be based on what conditions are served up at Optus Stadium in Perth. The visitors have utilised the contest against the Prime Minister’s XI to give their less experienced bowlers a run out in Australian conditions – albeit on a pitch that will likely bear little resemblance to the Test surface – and also to look at the role of the allrounders with a view to how they balance the line-up.Related

Abrar likely to miss first Test against Australia after 'discomfort in right leg'

Harris and Bancroft audition for Australia's opening spot

Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hasan Ali are all-but-certain starters in Perth, while legspinner Abrar Ahmed seems sure to feature, but the identity of the third frontline quick could be up for debate with Faheem Ashraf appearing likely to take the No. 7 spot.Left-armer Mir Hamza caused the occasional uneasy moment on a docile surface against the PM XI’s top order while the uncapped Khurram Shahzad bowled tidily and claimed the wicket of Cameron Bancroft.”We’ll only be able to decide when we get closer to the game, see the pitch, see the conditions, see where the guys are at with their fitness and their loads,” captain Shan Masood said on how the Test attack could shape up. “You have to look at the opposition as well, match-ups, or type of bowling, is huge in cricket now.”Obviously Shaheen and Hasan are senior bowlers, they are probably penciled in, but you want to look at everyone and give them a fair run before you make that ultimate decision. The permutations on the structure if the side matters as well – do we go with an allrounder, what will the role of the spinner be? So there are a lot of things we are looking at and we are very glad we are playing a fixture like this.”Masood hinted that he sees Abrar, who has taken 38 wickets in his first six Tests, playing a key role. He sent down 19 overs on the second day and will likely be needed in both attacking and defensive roles in support of the quicks. However, the struggles of Yasir Shah in Australia – he averaged 89.50 in five Tests in the country – are a warning of the challenges ahead.”Spinners are crucial and we’ve seen that with the Australian team, how good Nathan Lyon has been for a number of years,” Masood said. “So a spinner plays an important role, he’s very complimentary to the fast bowlers in these conditions. Abrar has done really well for us, he’s taken a lot of wickets against good sides and we’ll be hoping he does the same on this tour.”Marcus Harris, who was Abrar’s wicket on the second day when he lofted to mid-on, was impressed by what he saw and believed his accuracy would stand him in good stead.”He’s good, he’s different,” he said. “We were lucky to see a bit of footage of him. If you hadn’t seen him before it would have been a little bit tough to face early. He’s very accurate as a legspinner which is half the battle then he’s got some good variations. Not sure the wicket at Perth will suit him too much, or even Melbourne the way it’s been, but Sydney probably won’t be too different to this. Thought he bowled really well throughout the day.”
