Middlesex handed suspended points deduction, special measures for financial breaches

ECB finds Middlesex and Middlesex Cricket Board in breach of financial regulations after years of mismanagement

Middlesex have until the end of October 2025 to show a sustainable year-on-year profit•Philip Brown/Getty Images

The ECB have placed Middlesex and Middlesex Cricket Board (MCB) under special measures following breaches of the County Partnership Agreement (CPA) and financial regulations. The measures have been imposed following an investigation into funds provided to Middlesex and MCB, which found the club has been financially mismanaged over several years. They include a reduction in payments to the club and a suspended points deduction in each of the County Championship, One Day Cup and T20 Blast, along with a business plan to run until the end of October 2025. The ECB will monitor the club every quarter and has the right to observe board and audit committee meetings.Middlesex’s financial issues, while exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, were triggered by an error in pension payments across a 12-year period which cost the club £500,000 to rectify. The issue, discovered in 2021, meant a registered loss of £952,000 that year, with the published accounts showing club reserves had been reduced to £179,000 from more than £2 million before the pandemic.Middlesex are unique among the 18 counties in that they do not own their home ground, Lord’s, which they rent from the MCC. This means, for example, they do not earn any extra revenue when the ground hosts international matches and are unable to stage non-cricket events at the venue, which other clubs utilise to turn a profit. As such, the county are over-reliant on income received from the ECB, which makes up more than 70 percent of their overall figure – £4.733 million out of £6.589 million, according to their latest accounts. This includes including their CPA, plus a further £1.3 million in return for agreeing to the staging of the Hundred. The ECB will henceforth reduce payments to Middlesex by £150,000, of which £100,000 will be suspended until 31 October 2025. The points deduction, equivalent to the maximum points for one win in each of the County Championship, the One Day Cup and the T20 Blast, is also suspended until 31 October 2025.The financial plan includes budgets for the period up until the end of October 2025 that show a sustainable year-on-year profit, and limits spending on players within an appropriate budget. In addition, a governance plan will include separating the governance and financial oversight of Middlesex and MCB and understanding the shortcomings in governance that caused the failings identified by the ECB’s investigation. The punishments handed down are more forgiving than those received by Durham in 2016, which included immediate relegation from Division One, a 48-point deduction for the following season and the loss of Test status. While the situations are different – Durham required a £3.8million bail-out from the governing body – Richard Gould and Richard Thompson, chief executive and chair of the ECB, respectively, are more supportive of the counties than their predecessors. In a statement released by the ECB on Monday, Gould said: “We have agreements in place with all our county cricket clubs and county cricket boards to ensure that ECB funding is used appropriately and for the purposes in which it is intended. Where breaches of our Regulations and Agreements take place, it is right that we take appropriate action.”It is vital that all our members have the necessary governance arrangements in place to ensure ECB funding is used appropriately. We will work closely with Middlesex County Cricket Club and Middlesex Cricket Board in the period ahead to ensure the conditions we have agreed are met.”Andrew Cornish, Middlesex CEO, said: “Middlesex is determined to ensure that the financial management and governance of the Club going forward is of the highest standard and we are resolved to work closely with ECB to ensure that this is the case.”

"It was hard at first but I got used to it and now I’m cool," James said to the . "Emma left Sonia with a top team and she built that winning culture Chelsea are known for."

While Hayes was known for her tactical sharpness and inspirational leadership, Bompastor’s competitive edge and intense approach have become defining traits of her early Chelsea tenure.

"Sonia is one of the most competitive people I’ve come across. It’s not just about football – whatever it is, she wants to beat you," James added. "That gets passed down in the dressing room and in training – always thinking about the next thing we can win."

Unfortunately for James, her personal progress was temporarily halted in early April when a hamstring injury ruled her out of Chelsea’s final stretch of the season. The timing was bitter, as she missed out on key WSL fixtures and the Blues’ FA Cup final triumph.

Australia's preparation for India day-night Test to begin during WBBL

WBBL finishes on December 2 with Australia’s bowlers to build their loads during the tournament ahead of multi-format tour

Alex Malcolm09-Sep-2023Australia’s women are set to face the challenge of preparing for a Test match in India while playing the WBBL with national selector Shawn Flegler revealing that planning is already underway to have both the fast bowlers and spinners increasing their bowling loads during the six-week T20 tournament in preparation for a day-night pink-ball encounter at the start of the tour.Australia are set to play their first Test match in India since 1984 as part of a multi-format series in December and January. The dates and venues for the tour are yet to be announced but Australia are preparing to begin the series with a day-night pink-ball Test. The two teams played a day-night Test on the Gold Coast during India’s tour of Australia in 2021.The WBBL will run from October 19 until December 2 with all of Australia’s internationals likely to play the full season. Harmanpreet Kaur is the only India player currently contracted to play in this year’s competition after being picked by Melbourne Renegades in last weekend’s overseas draft. The current Australia team have not faced such a short turnaround from the WBBL into a Test match, let alone a Test match in India. Flegler said it would be a unique preparation but one they are already planning for.”We’ve got to do preparation during the WBBL,” he said. “Which is really important for, one, our pace bowlers to have their loads up and be ready to go if required to bowl long spells during the Test match, but also our spin bowlers.”So it’s a balancing act playing WBBL but also getting some loads in and preparing.”Flegler also revealed that Australia would not play a long-form warm-up fixture before the Test despite playing a three-day tour match against England A ahead of this year’s Ashes Test.Australia will instead hold a training camp in India with centre-wickets and an intrasquad game set to be the only match practice they get before the Test. Australia are also planning on using local Indian players in their preparation, similar to Australia’s men using net bowlers for their pre-series camp in Bengaluru ahead of the four-Test tour earlier this year.”We’re going to go to India a week or 10 days before the Test match starts,” Flegler said. “So we’ll have some good training prep leading into that. We’ll have some extra players from India that we will use in some centre-wicket scenarios. We don’t have an actual warm-up fixture. We’ve gone down the path of having an intrasquad game essentially. So we’ll have the squad over there with some extras from India. It’ll be a good challenge for everyone coming out of WBBL into a pink-ball Test match under lights.”

Can Netherlands surprise red-hot South Africa once again?

Big picture

“The only thing the past gives us is learning.”South Africa head coach Rob Walter was talking about his side’s defeat to Netherlands at the 2022 T20 World Cup when he shared this aphorism. South Africa were not only stunned but knocked out of the tournament. But, Walter said, they have learnt their lesson. So when the two sides meet in Dharamsala on Tuesday, South Africa will not be looking at Netherlands as a weaker opponent. At the same time, they should not be under any pressure. This time it’s a longer format, which reduces the chances of an upset. When these sides played two ODIs earlier this year, South Africa thrashed Netherlands by eight wickets and 146 runs.Related

  • Sybrand Engelbrecht, the World Cup debutant who had walked away from cricket

  • South Africa rock around de Kock

  • Flying under the radar or not, South Africa seem to have figured themselves out

  • Ackermann: Netherlands 'need to put together all three phases'

A bigger reason, perhaps, is South Africa’s recent form – they are on a five-match winning streak. In each of those games, they batted first, smashed more than 300, crossed 400 twice, and won by 100-plus runs. Arguably, they have the strongest batting unit at this World Cup. Since the start of 2023, ten batters have scored 400 or more ODI runs at an average above 50 and a strike rate over 100. Four of them are from South Africa: Temba Bavuma, Aiden Markram, David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen. Quinton de Kock, with 552 runs at 46.00 and 97.52, isn’t too far behind either. What about Netherlands’ chances then? They have lost both of their matches so far in this World Cup, but have shown fight. To win, however, they need to put together all three phases of the game, as their batter Colin Ackermann noted after the New Zealand loss. For inspiration, they too can look at the past. If it can be done once, it can be done again. And they don’t even have to jog back all the way to last year. They just need to look at Sunday’s game, where Afghanistan toppled defending champions England.

Form guide

Netherlands LLLWW (last five ODIs, most recent first)
South Africa WWWWW

In the spotlight: Bas de Leede and Quinton de Kock

Playing ODIs for the last time, Quinton de Kock is burning the brightest. He had played 17 World Cup matches before this edition but couldn’t score a hundred. Now he has two in two. Since the start of 2021, he has been equally aggressive against pace and spin, which has helped him score at better than run a ball not just in the powerplay but also in the middle overs. South Africa will expect him to set the tone once again.1:34

Jaffer: Netherlands can spring more than one surprise

Bas de Leede has been exceptional for Netherlands this year. It was his five-for and blazing hundred against Scotland that helped Netherlands qualify for the World Cup. Then, in his side’s opening game here, he picked up a four-for and struck 67 against Pakistan. Overall, he averages 46.25 with the bat and 22.90 with the ball in 2023. If Netherlands are to beat South Africa, they will require a similar performance from him.

Team news

The only question for South Africa is if they want to bring in fast bowler Gerald Coetzee for left-arm wristspinner Tabraiz Shamsi. The answer could lie in the pitch.South Africa (probable): 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Temba Bavuma (capt), 3 Rassie van der Dussen, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 David Miller, 6 Heinrich Klaasen, 7 Marco Jansen, 8 Kagiso Rabada, 9 Keshav Maharaj, 10 Lungi Ngidi, 11 Tabraiz Shamsi/Gerald CoetzeeLogan van Beek missed the New Zealand game with a hamstring injury. If he is fit, he could come in for Ryan Klein. The rest of the side is likely to be unchanged.Netherlands (probable): 1 Vikramjit Singh, 2 Max O’Dowd, 3 Colin Ackermann, 4 Bas de Leede, 5 Teja Nidamanuru, 6 Scott Edwards (capt & wk), 7 Sybrand Engelbrecht, 8 Roelof van der Merwe, 9 Logan van Beek/Ryan Klein, 10 Aryan Dutt, 11 Paul van Meekeren2:08

Bavuma: Dharamsala outfield wasn’t all too bad at practice

Pitch and conditions: Dharamsala outfield under scanner

Dharamsala has hosted two matches so far in this World Cup. On both occasions, the teams were more concerned about the substandard outfield than the pitch. While Bavuma said the outfield didn’t feel as bad when South Africa did their fielding practice on Sunday, the players will be cautious while diving around. Meanwhile, for Netherlands, in the words of their coach Ryan Cook, it’s “probably better than most of the outfields we play on”.There have been light showers in the last couple of days, and the forecast for Tuesday afternoon is similar.

Stats and trivia

  • Markram and Klaasen are the only batters with strike rates over 120 against both pace and spin this year (minimum 200 runs against each).
  • Kagiso Rabada is one short of 150 ODI wickets. If he gets there on Tuesday, in his 95th match, he will be the fourth-fastest South Africa bowler to the mark.
  • So far in 2023, Rabada has played seven ODIs. In six of those, he picked up two or more wickets.
  • With 13 scores of 50 or more in ODIs, Scott Edwards is joint-second for Netherlands with Tom Cooper. He needs one more 50-plus score to draw level with Ryan ten Doeschate for the top spot.
  • Colin Ackermann averages 144.00 against pace and 21.85 against spin in his nine ODIs.

Quotes

“To go back to what has been said regarding our brand of cricket, us being opportunistic as batters, as bowlers, looking to take the game on. That obviously means that the strike rates will be a bit higher. If you look at our top six, top seven, all of the guys really have been striking at high strike rates. It’s just more a matter of us keeping up the intent, looking for opportunities to put bowlers under pressure and obviously backing our skills and execution. So, coming into the World Cup, nothing is going to be different. We’re going to keep going the same way. We’re going to keep backing that.”
“We have got a couple of guys with South African origin in our team with Roelof [van der Merwe] and Colin and obviously a couple of guys from the coaching staff as well. So we do know a lot of the [South Africa] players quite personally and professionally as well, having done a lot of work with them in different teams. So yeah we get to know a little bit more about the players and what makes them tick, and obviously we will be using that to see if there is any advantage that we can use.”

After defeating the United States 2-1 to win the Gold Cup, Mexico star Raúl Jiménez emphasized the importance of winning a title one year before hosting the World Cup.

"We started off slow but kept improving; it’s an extra boost as we wrap up the summer before the World Cup – winning, lifting the trophy – it will be something very positive heading into the upcoming friendly matches and the World Cup. We had it in mind, and we’re very happy," Jimenez said.

Jimenez was a key catalyst to El Tri's 10th Gold Cup win, scoring the equalizer ahead of halftime against the Americans.

Edson Álvarez, Mexico’s captain, scored the game-winner against the U.S. and was full of emotion after the win.

“I’m speechless, very happy because it was 35 days of training camp without seeing our families. Our desire was to win it, for all the effort we’ve put in to be rewarded with a title – but there are still many things we need to improve,” said the West Ham player.

He admitted he was initially concerned he would have another goal that he scored ruled back by VAR, but he made sure to have a proper celebration following it being confirmed.

“They had already taken several goals away from me before. I thought I was in a good position. They cut off the goal celebration, but when it was finally given, it was an incredible joy,” he said.

Gilberto Mora, the 16-year-old midfielder from Club Tijuana, continues to capture global attention with his standout performances for the Mexican national team. His role in the 2025 Gold Cup not only impressed fans but also secured him a place in football history.

On Sunday, Mora became the youngest player ever to feature in the final of a major international tournament. At just 16 years and 265 days old, he started for Mexico in the Gold Cup Final against the United States and played 75 minutes in the team’s 2-1 victory under coach Javier Aguirre.

His record surpasses that of Spain’s Lamine Yamal, who previously made history at age 17 by playing in the Euro 2024 Final, where Spain defeated England 2-1. Mora also edges past the legendary Pelé, who was 17 years and 249 days old when he starred in the 1958 World Cup Final, scoring twice as Brazil beat Sweden 5-2.

In addition to this milestone, Mora had already made headlines earlier in the tournament by becoming the youngest player to debut in an official match with the senior Mexican national team.
