Cost £0: Man Utd hit gold on "generational" star worth more than Rashford

Manchester United’s woes this season have been epitomised over the international break, with there notably having not been a single Red Devils representative named in Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad.

With the likes of Harry Maguire, Mason Mount, Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo all making their respective returns from injury, United’s only connection to the Three Lions this time around was that of Marcus Rashford, albeit with the 27-year-old currently on loan at Aston Villa.

The Old Trafford outcast started in both games against Albania and Latvia, although endured two mixed performances on the flanks, with Tuchel admitting that he had “spoken” to both Rashford and Phil Foden following Friday’s win.

The United academy graduate has, it must be said, enjoyed a lively start to life at Villa Park after racking up four assists from just nine outings for his new side, yet the wait goes on to break his duck in the Midlands.

Even amid the shortage of attacking depth in Ruben Amorim’s ranks, few will be truly lamenting the decision to loan out Rashford back in January, with it already looking like the end of his lengthy association with the Manchester side.

Why Marcus Rashford should be sold this summer

It is now just over nine years ago that a teenage Rashford burst onto the scene following that brace against FC Midtjylland in February 2016, with the 18-year-old capitalising on a centre-forward injury crisis to force his way into Louis van Gaal’s senior set-up.

A further 136 goals and 425 games have followed in the time since, although it would appear that the forward’s time at Old Trafford has come to its conclusion, not least with Villa holding a £40m option to buy this summer.

Not long ago, Rashford had looked almost “unstoppable” after returning from the 2022 World Cup, as per then-boss Erik ten Hag, with the Englishman ultimately finishing that 2022/23 campaign with 30 goals to his name at club level.

£300k-per-week deal in the summer of 2023, albeit with the long-serving star failing to kick on since then, having scored just eight times last season.

A muted start to the current campaign, which yielded just seven goals, was followed by an imposed exile amid Amorim’s appointment, with Rashford having not been seen in a United shirt since being left out for the Manchester Derby back in December.

Previously described as a “major major problem” for the club by journalist Liam Canning, Rashford did himself outline his desire for a “new challenge” late last year, with talk of a dream move to Barcelona on the cards, prior to his switch to Villa.

That now looks to have marked the beginning of the end for his United journey – hopefully the same isn’t true of Kobbie Mainoo.

Man Utd have struck gold on Rashford 2.0

Despite the way it appears to be ending, Rashford’s spell at United has largely represented a real bright spot in an at times bleak post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, with the forward’s rise from academy prospect to first-team talisman having been simply meteoric.

Now, amid the ongoing PSR restrictions, cashing in on the Manchester-born striker would represent astute business for the club, particularly if that £40m price tag is met.

While there may also be a temptation to nudge other academy talents towards the exit door, it would be a crying shame for young Mainoo to follow suit, despite talk surrounding a £70m move to Chelsea back in January.

There have been whispers in recent months that the teenager may even look to move abroad after a stall in contract talks, albeit with a more recent update indicating that the latest negotiations over a new deal have been ‘positive’.

The 19-year-old has endured an injury-hit season, although it was not too long ago that he looked the type of player that United should be building around – a point that pundit Jack Wilshere also thought was true at international level:

Who can forget the midfielder’s decisive strike in the FA Cup final, nor his delightful, curling effort in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool. Those moments of magic had come following a sublime solo goal away at Molineux in the 4-3 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers back in February 2024.

Described as a “generational talent” by teammate Rasmus Hojlund, Mainoo – who started every knockout stage game at Euro 2024 – hasn’t enjoyed a smooth ride under the new Amorim regime, although he did showcase his credentials in a number ten berth after scoring and assisting away at FCSB.

In truth, the United boss must find a home for the midfield maestro in his 3-4-3 set-up, with it likely to represent a real waste of talent and potential if Mainoo simply tumbles down the pecking order.

Manchester United – Kobbie Mainoo

Indeed, the youngster’s status is indicated best by the fact that he is now worth around £46m, according to Transfermarkt, placing him ahead of that man Rashford in that regard, with the latter man deemed to be worth £42m.

Having followed in his teammate’s footsteps after rising from the youth ranks, Mainoo can now kick on and show just why he is United and England’s future. Rashford, meanwhile, could well be resigned to the past on both fronts.

E o Matheus Pereira?

+Mazzuco avalia janela do Botafogo e traça meta do clube no Brasileirão

Lyon criticises suggestions he went out to bat with concussion sub in mind

Nathan Lyon has criticised comments which suggested he came to bat at Lord’s in an attempt to get hit on the head to allow Australia to activate a concussion sub as disrespectful in light of Phil Hughes’ death eight years ago.Lyon suffered a calf injury on the second day which is all but certain to rule him out of the tour, but he hobbled to the crease at the end of Australia’s second innings, adding 15 runs for the final wicket with Mitchell Starc.Commentating on Sky Sports, Kevin Pietersen raised the question of whether it could have been done for the potential of getting Lyon subbed out of the game which can only happen through concussion or Covid-19.Related

“Imagine if he [Lyon] had been hit on the head and got concussion, he’d have got a like-for-like replacement and a world-class spinner [Todd Murphy], based on how he performed in India, it gives food for thought,” Pietersen said. When asked a broader question about whether cricket should introduce substitutes for a variety of injuries to avoid a team being a player down, Lyon referenced the death of Hughes who was struck by a bouncer while playing for New South Wales in late 2014.”Test cricket’s been around a lot longer than I have and injuries are part of the game,” he said. “I have heard comments that I only went out there to get hit in the head but I’m really against that. I have lost one of my mates due to being hit in the head so I think that’s a really poor conversation being had, if I’m honest with you.”Lyon, who described his injury as a “decent tear”, will have further conversations with Australia’s medical team on Sunday about his future on the tour but is resigned to an extended period on the sidelines for the first time since he made his Test debut in 2011. This injury has come during his 100th consecutive Test and he sits on 496 wickets.Nathan Lyon hobbles out to bat to a standing ovation•Getty Images

He admitted it had been an emotional few days but was determined to help Australia in any way he could which is why he came to the crease.”I have been absolutely shattered,” he said. “I have been in tears, I have been upset, I have been hurting. That shows this team means everything to me. And I will start this rehab journey now to get back and play my role and keep loving what I am able to do.”After doing this for 13 years and not missing a day of school, if you can put it like that, it’s going to be challenging. It’s going to be different. It’s a different challenge. But we always look forward to different challenges and trying to find a way to get better.”Lyon, who had to wait in the Long Room when the eighth wicket fell to avoid being timed out, said that Pat Cummins and Andrew McDonald had been reluctant about the idea of him batting, but he believed any runs added could prove vital.”I knew the risks,” he said. “But the way I look at it… I’ll do anything for this team. You never know how big a 15-run partnership can be in an Ashes series. I’m proud of myself for going out there and doing that. I’ll do it again and again and again. I love this team. I love playing cricket for Australia. And if I can keep playing my role and help out my team-mates I’ll do that.”

Leeds now want to sign both £15m striker and Manor Solomon at the same time

Leeds United are interested in signing another £15m attacker alongside a permanent move for winger Manor Solomon.

Leeds back to winning ways with 2-0 win against Millwall

The Whites, under Daniel Farke, got back to winning ways after two games without a victory in the Championship, defeating Millwall 2-0 on Wednesday evening at Elland Road.

An early own goal after good work from Joe Rothwell and Solomon got Leeds on their way, with Ao Tanaka scoring late on to ensure the Whites would go four points clear of third-place Burnley and two clear of Sheffield United.

Things are looking good again after last weekend’s defeat at Portsmouth, and attention appears to already be on the summer transfer window and who Leeds could sign.

Solomon has impressed on loan from Tottenham, scoring seven goals and registering seven assists in the second tier, becoming a regular on the left-hand side and striking up a positive relationship with Junior Firpo.

Now, it appears as if another attacker is wanted by Leeds officials alongside the Israeli international.

Leeds looking to sign Archer alongside permanent Solomon deal

Talking to GiveMeSport, reliable reporter Ben Jacobs was asked about Leeds’ transfer plans for the summer.

He stated that the “priority” is ensuring promotion to the Premier League, and if they succeed, are looking to sign a playmaker and Solomon on a permanent deal. Jacobs also revealed that Southampton forward Cameron Archer is still of interest to the Whites.

“The priority is to get promotion and then assess what targets are possible. Leeds are more focused on finding a playmaker and trying to buy Manor Solomon, while Cameron Archer remains on their radar.”

As we know, Archer was a top target for Leeds and the 49ers during the January transfer window, however, a deal failed to materialise despite the player being keen on a move to Elland Road.

Cameron Archer

The 23-year-old, who cost the Saints £15m from Aston Villa last summer, came in for praise from former manager Russell Martin, who said earlier this season: “I think he’s been really good for us. In his short spell here, he’s been a real threat. He’s improving all the time. I really love him as a boy… and I think he’s a brilliant signing for us. I think he’ll score a lot for us.”

Archer scored in back-to-back game weeks in the Premier League in October, however, he has found game time hard to come by since the turn of the year under Ivan Juric.

"Perfect news" – Farke buzzing as Leeds seal new 3-year contract for gem

His new deal runs until 2028.

ByCharlie Smith Mar 12, 2025

Should Leeds and Southampton swap divisions in the summer, then the appeal of a move to Yorkshire will surely be the same for Archer, and it looks as if those at Elland Road are still keen on the attacker, making this one to watch.

Real Madrid make "fresh" Martin Zubimendi move that "will rock" Arsenal

Real Madrid are reportedly stepping up their interest in Spain international midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who’s a top summer transfer target for Arsenal, with the La Liga title contenders also making a new manoeuvre for the player which may worry Mikel Arteta’s side.

Arsenal open talks to sign Martin Zubimendi in pre-summer deal

Since the January transfer window, Arsenal have been attempting to wrap up a deal for Zubimendi pre-summer.

Arteta's dream signing: £120m striker now expresses desire to join Arsenal

Mikel Arteta’s top target has now made it clear he wants to move to the Emirates Stadium this summer.

3 ByDominic Lund Mar 26, 2025

It was first reported by The Mail that Arsenal had entered advanced talks for Zubimendi in the winter, and the Real Sociedad star would come in to fill the void left by Thomas Partey and Jorginho, who are set to leave the Emirates at the end of this season when their contracts expire.

According to other reports since then, Arsenal remain hopeful of reaching an agreement for Zubimendi before the beginning of this summer window, which is slowly approaching with just nine games left to play in the Premier League.

However, while new Gunners sporting director Andrea Berta is said to be determined to seal Zubimendi’s signature, it is by no means a done deal for the 26-year-old yet, despite negotiations rumoured to be going on for the last few months.

Arsenal have verbally agreed broad terms with Zubimendi, according to reliable journalist Ben Jacobs, but there is still every chance that another club could swoop in and spoil Arteta’s chances of landing him, and he could even decide to remain at Sociedad like he did last summer.

Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Liverpool and Real Madrid have all been credited with interest in the Spaniard, as per Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, so Arteta faces stiff competition from a host of elite sides.

One of their rivals for his signature, Real Madrid specifically, are also now beginning to pose a serious threat to Arsenal.

Real Madrid make "fresh" Martin Zubimendi move that "will rock" Arsenal

That is according to journalist Graeme Bailey and The Boot Room, who report that Carlo Ancelotti’s side are now ramping up talks with the player’s representatives in an attempt to hijack the north Londoners.

As per TBR and Bailey, Real Madrid are now making it clear to Zubimendi that they want him at the Bernabeu this summer, in a “fresh” move that “will rock” Arsenal.

Their serious presence in the race for Zubimendi does come as a concern for Arteta, and it is believed they’re fully aware of the threat they pose. It is also a key reason why they attempted to sign him last summer, but now it appears Arsenal will have to beat off competition from Europe’s most alluring club.

Zubimendi’s contract contains a £50 million release clause, which Arsenal are prepared to trigger (Fabrizio Romano), but the main difficulty in this transfer is convincing Zubimendi to swap Spain for England.

Pep loves him: Man City ready £70m bid for "complete" Premier League star

Manchester City are ready to make a serious attempt to sign a Premier League star this summer who has an admirer in Pep Guardiola.

Man City transfer rumours as Pep plans for summer

It hasn’t exactly been a season to remember after four successive top flight titles, however, City can still win silverware before the end of the season in the FA Cup.

A rare January signing blitz was carried out by those on the blue side of Manchester, with forward Omar Marmoush the biggest arrival from Eintracht Frankfurt.

There were also additions in midfield and in defence, and ahead of the 2025/26 season, there could be more incomings with some departures likely.

Kevin De Bruyne is out of contract and is thought to be close to a move to the MLS, whereas a bid could be accepted for Jack Grealish. Bernardo Silva has also agreed personal terms with PSG, so midfield reinforcements could be on the to-do list.

There have been claims that Man City have already agreed to sign Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton, but another Premier League midfield is of interest to the Sky Blues.

Man City willing to make £70m bid to sign Bruno Guimaraes

According to a report from Spain, Man City are ready to firm up their interest in Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes by making a £70m offer which is being led by Guardiola.

The Brazilian midfielder has been linked with a move to the Etihad in the past and is once again being eyed by the Citizens, who see Guimaraes partnering Rodri.

The possibility of a move materialising will depend on Newcastle’s attempts to qualify for Europe, and if the Magpies fail to make the Champions League, a transfer could be on the cards.

Guimaraes is seen as an ideal fit for Guardiola, who believes the Newcastle star will fit perfectly into his plans. The 27-year-old has been at St James’ Park since 2022 and is under contract for another three years. He’s captained Newcastle in all 28 of their Premier League games this season and was praised by Guardiola last year.

“He is an exceptional holding midfielder. He is aggressive, with the ball or without the ball,” said Guardiola on Guimaraes.

“At set pieces, he’s aggressive and is a real, complete holding midfielder since being at Lyon and now at a club who want to grow up and up. I’m sure he’s part of the project for the next years. Definitely.”

Joe Root hundred guides England on freewheeling first day of the Ashes

Hosts score at more than five an over before Ben Stokes springs surprise declaration

Matt Roller16-Jun-2023The first day of the 2023 Ashes started with Zak Crawley lacing Pat Cummins through cover for four, ended with Australia’s openers seeing out four overs following an opportunistic declaration, and hardly paused for breath in between.England had made clear that they would not change the approach that has brought them so much success in the last 12 months and hurtled towards 400 while scoring at five runs per over, looting 45 boundaries and playing out only two maidens all day. After three successive Ashes series without a hundred as captain, it was Joe Root who underpinned their innings. Several outlandish shots – he twice reverse-scooped sixes over the slip cordon – interspersed a high-tempo cruise and he played late, dabbing, flicking and punching singles out to boundary-riders.Related

Live Report: England vs Australia, 1st Test, Edgbaston

'Thumped on the up through cover-point!'

He brought up his hundred in 145 balls, clipping Nathan Lyon off his pads, then twice charged down to hit him back over his head for six in Lyon’s next over. With the second new ball approaching, Ben Stokes had seen enough and called his batters in to leave David Warner and Usman Khawaja 20 minutes to survive until the close. The Edgbaston crowd, who made themselves known to Australia’s boundary-riders throughout an unbridled opening day, became part of the theatre, teeing up Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson as they bounded in with the new ball. But both openers survived with few scares and will come back on Saturday hoping to set Australia on their way to a lead on a flat, slow pitch. It had long been clear that this Ashes would be played at a different tempo to any other, and the first ball of the series only served to reinforce that. Eighteen months ago in Brisbane, Mitchell Starc’s dismissal of Rory Burns set the tone for a tour defined by England’s dismal performances; here, Crawley crunched Cummins through the off side on the up.Cummins posted a deep backward point from the start, pre-empting England’s aggression and by the third over had three men on the rope. Their value was shown in the fourth: Ben Duckett only half-committed to a cut shot, with deep backward point nullifying his opportunity for a boundary, and edged Josh Hazlewood through to Alex Carey.Hazlewood’s inclusion for his first Test since January came as a surprise, with Mitchell Starc making way after playing in the World Test Championship final at The Oval last week. But he was the pick of Australia’s attack, finding some bounce on an unreceptive surface and finishing the day as their most economical bowler – even if he conceded more than four runs per over.Lyon came on early, introduced in the 10th over as though Cummins was dangling a carrot. He started with four men out, but Crawley was in no mood to milk singles, and thrashed the final ball of his first over for four through the covers. By drinks, he had lashed Scott Boland for two further boundaries.”Another 30 for Zak!” taunted an Australian fielder, picked up by the stump microphone, and Crawley’s innings should have ended before he had reached a half-century. He stepped across to the off side looking to whip Boland into the Eric Hollies Stand at midwicket and edged a lifter through to Alex Carey – but Australia did not appeal. He brought up his half-century off 56 balls, but had lost his partner just before. Ollie Pope, who settled into his innings after a frenetic start, lofted Lyon over mid-off but was trapped on the knee roll as he looked to whip across the line. Umpire Ahsan Raza initially gave him not out but ball-tracking confirmed the ball had pitched in line with leg stump.England ticked over throughout the session, taking an unprecedented 54 singles before lunch – yet Australia’s defensive fields were vindicated by three wickets in the first session, Crawley falling in the final over of the morning. He gloved behind as Boland found some extra bounce from a length, Australia successfully reviewing the on-field decision.Harry Brook, facing Australia for the first time in his career, counter-punched in the afternoon, lofting Lyon over cover from the eighth ball he faced. He cut and drove Boland for two boundaries in three balls, but nearly fell in the same over: he top-edged a short, wide ball which Travis Head initially failed to pick up at deep point, then dropped as he scampered in and dived forwards.England then lost two wickets in nine balls, leaving them 176 for 5. Brook’s dismissal was a freak: he shouldered arms to Lyon and the ball ballooned up off his thigh pad to a cry of “catch it”; Carey tried to but watched it land inside the crease and spin sharply back into middle stump. He caught the next one that came his way, an outside edge from Stokes as Hazlewood angled one across him. That brought Jonny Bairstow in for his first Test innings since September, and he survived a tight review for lbw off his first ball. But as Root cruised to a half-century without breaking sweat, Bairstow found his rhythm, slashing Cameron Green – who bowled only six overs in the day – over the off side.Root was given out on 61 but successfully overturned the lbw decision on review, having gloved the ball into his pad. It was the second of three successive reverse-sweeps he played off Lyon; the other two flew to the boundary.Bairstow played aggressor after tea as the partnership swelled past 100, but his dismissal for a run-a-ball 78 preceded a frantic passage of play. He and the returning Moeen Ali were both stumped off Lyon, charging down the pitch, before Broad lost his off stump to Green after hoicking a couple of fours.Root freed his arms after ticking past his hundred, a landmark that was met with a punch of the air and a standing ovation from around the ground. This was his first hundred against Australia in eight years, with a dozen unconverted half-centuries in between times, and the 30th of his Test career. There was enough time for him to take 20 runs off one Lyon over – along with Robinson, who reverse-swept him for four – before Stokes, wearing his bucket hat, gestured for the pair to come back in. There may never have been a day of Ashes cricket quite like it.

Daniel Bell-Drummond 271*, Tawanda Muyeye 179 as Kent flatten Northamptonshire

Kent batters add 318 for second wicket to pile on the advantage at Wantage Road

ECB Reporters Network26-Jun-2023

Tawanda Muyeye and Daniel-Bell Drummond set batting milestones as Kent dominated on day two of their LV= Insurance County Championship match with hosts Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.Zimbabwean Muyeye cracked a stylish maiden first-class hundred complete with four huge sixes on his way to 179 while the more experienced Bell-Drummond inked in a new career-best of 271 not out, eclipsing his 206 not out against Loughborough University at Canterbury seven years ago. Bell-Drummond’s individual tally set a record for a Kent batsman at Wantage Road, beating Frank Wooley’s 217 back in 1926.The pair added 318 for the second wicket as the visitors piled up 550 for 5 by stumps, a lead of 313.On what was a tough day for a weary-looking Northamptonshire attack, Alex Russell and Ben Sanderson emerged from the onslaught with two wickets apiece.Bell-Drummond set the tone, on-driving the first ball of the day back past the stumps for four, but it wasn’t long before Muyeye took centre-stage.The 22-year-old, who originally arrived on these shores with his mother as an asylum seeker, showed his promise as a schoolboy at Eastbourne where he set records for the number of runs scored (1112) and sixes hit (56) in his first season.Initially with Sussex, he signed for Kent in 2021, scoring 89 against Middlesex at the end of that season as the hosts chased down a target of 375 in the fourth innings.Nevertheless, with England man Zak Crawley at the top of the order, his opportunities have been limited, so this was only his 13th first-class appearance, but there would be nothing unlucky about it.Tawanda Muyeye plays into the off side•Getty Images

Muyeye picked up where he’d left off on day one, using the long levers of his tall slender frame to showcase an elegant technique mixed with power, dismissing a short one from Sanderson to the mid-wicket boundary before despatching long hops from Jack White and Alex Russell to the square leg fence.A single to deep cover took him beyond that previous career-best against Middlesex and there were no nervous 90s either, a huge six over mid-on taking him to the brink of that maiden hundred which duly came minutes later courtesy of another half-tracker pulled to the fence.Off came the helmet amid a joyous celebration from a talented young player who’d played with the exuberance of someone enjoying a Sunday afternoon game in the park with his mates. He celebrated the milestone with a glorious straight six off White which raised the 200-stand.Bell-Drummond was less exuberant, but continued his rich vein of form in June, a 12th four carrying him to three figures in a wicketless first session for the hosts. The pair forged on after the interval, Muyeye plundering a third six, he’d only hit one in first-class cricket before today. The stand moved beyond 300 and the 2nd wicket record against Northamptonshire of 382 set by Sean Dickson and Joe Denly looked in sight before the youngster mishit Russell into the hands of Sanderson at cover.Such was the charm with which he’d played, that his departure took some of the sunshine out of the cricket, Denly and Jack Leaning falling cheaply either side of the second new ball, the latter to a sharply spinning delivery from Rob Keogh which bowled him through the gate.Bell-Drummond though picked up the mantle, a glorious straight drive taking him past his previous Championship-best of 166. His first Championship double hundred complete with 20 fours came soon after tea, and four through mid-wicket off White enabled him to chalk up the new career-best landmark.Jordan Cox kept him company either side of tea with an ebullient 41 in a stand of 106 before being castled by the persevering Sanderson.Bell-Drummond however batted through to stump and a triple century beckons on day three.
