Big upgrade on Grant: West Brom keen on signing "powerful" Maja replacement

Tony Mowbray was handed a rude awakening back in the hot seat of football management away at Middlesbrough on Tuesday night as his new West Bromwich Albion side fell to a dire 2-0 defeat.

It was a flat display from the Baggies at the Riverside Stadium who could only muster up one big chance being created all evening, with the quality of Ben Doak towards the close of the contest eventually securing Michael Carrick’s men all three points.

Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray.

Mowbray could well want to add more quality to the attacking ranks after seeing his new team draw blanks on the road, with this striker reportedly on their agenda.

West Brom interested in signing new forward

This has been a promising transfer window for a number of promotion chasers so far, notably Sheffield United who have welcomed Ben Brereton Diaz & Tom Cannon through the door.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

So, what is West Brom’s response? Well, as per Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, the promotion candidates are considering a loan move for St. Gallen star Willem Geubbels this January in order to give them another standout option up top.

The Baggies are not alone in this pursuit, however, with the 23-year-old attacker also being eyed up by fellow Championship outfits Leeds United and Norwich City.

This will be an area that West Brom will be desperate to improve in, especially when you consider usual first-team ace Josh Maja – who has 12 second-tier goals next to his name – is now sidelined for the foreseeable owing to a leg injury that requires surgery.

What Geubbels can offer West Brom

It would be a wise decision to try and snap up Geubbels before the close of the hectic transfer window, with the ex-Olympique Lyonnais youngster perhaps an upgrade on what Mowbray already has at his disposal – away from any lingering injury issues – in the form of Karlan Grant.

After all, Grant hasn’t always found his time at the Hawthorns to be a walk in the park.

Indeed, before becoming a first-team regular this season, the former Huddersfield Town man had found himself chucked out on loan to Cardiff City, with a lacklustre three goal return managed during the 2022/23 campaign in the Championship signalling his switch to the Bluebirds.

He has managed to breathe life back into his playing days in the West Midlands when looking at the table above, but his spot could soon be taken up by Geubbels’ arrival onto the scene, with the 23-year-old managing to match and surpass a few of Grant’s numbers this season playing out in Switzerland.

With a further three strikes coming his way away from league action, the Frenchman ends up bettering Grant’s output overall in all competitions, with two of his goals even coming in the UEFA Conference League.

Capable of playing down either wing too, much like Grant, the “powerful” attacker – as he has been described by The Rangers Journal – does feel like an improvement on the West Brom number 18 as competition for spaces in Mowbray’s starting lineup heats up.

The 61-year-old will hope his new potential recruit can lead the line effectively until Maja’s return, as the Baggies are clearly missing their injury-stricken star man dearly with only one strike across their last three Championship outings.

That’s where Geubbels will hope he can be of use as a short-term purchase, as Mowbray goes about leaving his lasting mark back at the helm.

Newcastle in strong position to sign 18 y/o who scored SJP youth hat-trick

Newcastle United are believed to be in a strong position to complete the signing of a “special” Premier League player in 2025, according to a new transfer claim.

Latest Newcastle news

The Magpies are looking to strike some potential business this month, with a host of players emerging as possible additions at St James’ Park. One such figure is young Barcelona striker Vitor Roque, who has fallen out of favour at the La Liga giants, and they may be willing to sell him.

Meanwhile, Newcastle continue to search for a new right winger to act as an upgrade on current options Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron, with Bournemouth ace Antoine Semenyo linked with a move to the club. He is seen as an alternative option to Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo in that position.

Centre-back is still an area of the pitch that needs to be addressed, in terms of depth and bringing in a long-term option who is younger than their players there, and AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori has emerged as a strong choice there. He is thought to be open to the idea of returning to the Premier League, perhaps in order to aid his chances of forcing his way into Thomas Tuchel’s plans with England.

At the other end of the pitch, Everton marksman Dominic Calvert-Lewin is still being mentioned as a transfer target, with Newcastle eyeing him up on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Newcastle in strong position to sign "special" ace

According to The Daily Mail, Newcastle are in a good position to complete the signing of Southampton youngster Tyler Dibling in the summer window, following an impressive first half to the season by the 18-year-old.

He once scored a hat-trick at St James’ Park in a youth team game for Saints Under-23 at the age of just 16, and the Magpies are reportedly “being kept abreast of his situation” and “retain a strong interest” in him.

Dibling could be an exceptional long-term addition for Newcastle, coming straight in as an exciting squad player but also a long-term acquisition who could develop into a superstar over time.

The teenager has shone in a Southampton side that already looks doomed this season, scoring twice in the Premier League and being lauded by Danny Murphy, who said of him last month:

‘It is the quality he has got – the belief in himself and the physical power. He just goes past people with ease. He has got a lovely left foot. He is very brave on the ball and his decision-making is good. It is difficult to get too over the top with these young players, because he has just come on to the scene, but he is going to be something special.”

Signing Dibling is an absolute no-brainer for Newcastle, with his natural ability and long-term ceiling meaning he will end up at another huge club if it’s not the Magpies.

Snapping him up would be a real statement of intent by Paul Mitchell and Eddie Howe, so supporters could be desperate to see the transfer happen in the summer.

Deal progressing: Man Utd now in talks to sign new £900k-p/y ace for Amorim

Manchester United are now progressing with a deal to sign a new defender for Ruben Amorim this month, it has been reported, with the club keen to improve their ranks for the second half of the campaign.

Manchester United lose again as INEOS turn to January market

A 3-1 Premier League loss to Brighton at Old Trafford was the sixth in just 11 games for Ruben Amorim since his arrival, and left the club 13th in the top flight, just ten points clear of the relegation zone.

While relegation seems overwhelmingly unlikely, the 11 point gap to the final European places for next season also seems to be growing with each week, and barring an impressive Europa League run it seems likely that the Red Devils will be without any European football for the 2025/26 campaign.

A mammoth overhaul is likely to take place in the summer, with Jonny Evans, Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof all out of contract while the likes of Casemiro, Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Tyrell Malacia have all been strongly linked with moves away from the club either this month or in the summer.

One player already on his way out is Brazilian winger Antony, who is set to bring his awful spell at Old Trafford to a close and seal a loan move to Spanish side Real Betis in the coming days, while more exits could well follow in the final days of the transfer window.

To combat that, the Red Devils are also looking at strengthening their own ranks, and are now moving forward with a deal for a versatile new defender for Amorim.

Manchester United open talks over Lecce star

Now, the reliable David Ornstein has revealed that the Red Devils are opening talks over a deal to sign exciting fullback talent Patrick Dorgu from Lecce this month.

An in demand talent, Dorgu has at various times in the last 12 months been linked with all of Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea, but it seems that United are trying to make a move a reality for the versatile Dane, who can play on either flank both as a full-back or winger.

"Sensational" £59m Man Utd star agrees personal terms to join new club

The Red Devils have received a huge transfer offer.

1 ByDominic Lund Jan 19, 2025

He was dubbed an “elite team player” with “immense physicality” by one analyst, and has demonstrated his versatility this campaign for the Serie A outfit, having spent much of it on the right wing despite primarily being a left-back.

As per Ornstein, “discussions have begun” and “nothing is yet agreed, but dialogue is progressing” over a deal to sign the defender this month, while Fabrizio Romano adds some good news that Dorgu is “100% keen on move” and that Lecce are holding out for €40m (£34m), a fee that is considered relatively cheap by comparison to the likes of Nuno Mendes, Rayan Ait Nouri and Milos Kerkez, who Manchester United have also considered.

Still just 20-years-old, Dorgu would certainly be a smart signing for the Red Devils given his physical prowess, while he is well-adjusted to playing in a back three/five having done so for both club and country to good effect.

Equally, his wages would not be too high, with Dorgu having signed a new deal on October but still only taking home £900,000 a year (£10.5k per week) as things stand. Even with a hefty bump to those terms, he would be among Manchester United’s lowest earners.

Should he prove a success, he could well be the long term answer to the clubs left back issues alongside Diego Leon, who is expected to arrive in the coming months.

Alex Hales fifty sets Rockets soaring, Tabraiz Shamsi guides them to victory

Despite Cox’s unbeaten 61, Invincibles can’t recover from losing three wickets in first 35 balls

ECB Reporters Network17-Aug-2022Trent Rockets bounced back from Monday’s defeat at Birmingham Phoenix to make it four Hundred wins from five with a 25-run victory over the Oval Invincibles after Alex Hales had set the night up with some characteristic pyrotechnics in front of his home crowd.Hales’s stunning 59 off 29 balls packed four sixes and six fours and a strike rate of 203.44 to give Rockets the platform to post a challenging 181 for 4, backed up by leading run scorer Dawid Malan’s 38 off 29 and consolidated by skipper Lewis Gregory combining with Colin Munro to add 41 off the last 19 balls.Despite Jordan Cox countering with an unbeaten 61 off 33, Invincibles couldn’t recover from losing their first three wickets for 32 in 35 balls with South African left-arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi finding a notable degree of turn in taking 2 for 21.Tabraiz Shamsi celebrates the wicket of Jason Roy•ECB/Getty ImagesAfter Rockets were put in, Malan had the six counter ticking from ball four but spent the next 40 largely admiring his teammate as Hales delivered an extraordinary display of his clean hitting skills.Hales, who survived an lbw review first ball, took a particular liking to Sam Curran, plundering three of his four maximums off the left-hander, whom he hammered for 20 runs in one set of five. He had gone past 10,000 career short-format runs in the previous set and looked unstoppable. His fourth six – off Sydney Thunder teammate Mohammad Hasnain – sailed over the roof of the Fox Road stand and into the Nottingham night as his fifty came up off just 22 balls. But after he’d gone for 59, picking out the fielder on the midwicket boundary as Hasnain took his revenge, Rockets lost some momentum and it needed Gregory and Munro’s enterprise at the death to set the Invincibles a testing chase. In between, Malan’s 29-ball 38 had ended when Jason Roy grabbed a very low catch in the covers that needed an umpire review to confirm, Tom Kohler-Cadmore miscued to point and Daniel Sams flicked one straight to deep square leg.The test facing the visitors soon became bigger still. Will Jacks was fresh from his brilliant unbeaten 108 not out last time out but Sam Cook had his number on this occasion, denied his wicket on an lbw review in his first set and watching him survive a top-edged pull before bowling him with a perfect yorker.Roy at least avoided another duck but on 20 from 17 ran into a ripper from Shamsi that knocked back his leg stump. Shamsi had Billings leg before with one that fizzed through three balls later.Curran built himself a start but perished for 27, getting away with a steepler that Tom Moores inexplicably spilled only for the wicketkeeper to redeem himself next ball with a stumping that won instant forgiveness from bowler Samit Patel. It wasn’t the best of nights in the field for the Rockets, with Cox shelled at short third on 32 and Sunil Narine on 16 by the ‘keeper – a difficult one this time – in the same Luke Wood over, but with 66 needed from 20 balls despite Narine launching a free hit over the rope at wide long on, the winning line looked too far away for the Invincibles, despite Cox hitting three sixes.

Sophia Dunkley turns on the power after Katherine Brunt four-for in crushing England win

Opener excels in first outing of team’s aggressive new approach to seal win with 30 balls left

Career-best figures from Katherine Brunt and an exceptional first outing for Sophia Dunkley as opener propelled England to a resounding six-wicket win over South Africa with five overs to spare in the first T20I, and a multi-series triumph. The result at Chelmsford, led by Brunt’s 4 for 15 and sealed by Dunkley’s 31-ball half-century handed England a 10-2 lead with two more T20Is remaining, each worth two points for the win.Laura Wolvaardt scored a brave 55 off 49 balls for South Africa in one of the only things to go right for the visitors, who also lost star allrounder Marizanne Kapp for family reasons and bowler Tumi Sekhukhune to injury shortly before the match. Ayabonga Khaka’s 3 for 13 from four overs was another bright spot, but the damage had been done by Brunt and Dunkley.Brunt’s back, babyNot that she ever really went away… just for Test matches. Having announced her retirement from the longest format ahead of last month’s draw in Taunton, Brunt roared back with a vital 3 for 18 as England won the first ODI by five wickets. She sat out the next two but then, stepping up her preparations in earnest for the Commonwealth Games, the 37-year-old Brunt went out and took a career-best 4 for 15 to decimate South Africa and show just how up she is for the debut of women’s cricket at the event, starting in Birmingham next week.Brunt struck with the fourth ball of the match to remove Lara Goodall with a length ball that came back off the seam to clatter into the top of off stump, having had a caught-behind decision overturned on the previous delivery. She then had Sune Luus out edging onto her stumps for her 100th T20I wicket. When she returned in the 18th over, Brunt accounted for Delmi Tucker who sent a simple catch to Dunkley at point, then Wolvaardt to an excellent diving take at deep midwicket by Nat Sciver, who ran out Masabata Klaas four balls later after she had flicked a Brunt delivery to the on-side but was short of her ground coming back for a second, as Sciver threw the ball in to keeper Amy Jones.Katherine Brunt celebrates the wicket of Sune Luus•Getty Images

Legspinner Sarah Glenn returned to an England shirt for the first time since the T20I segment of the Ashes in January and took her first international wicket since the home series against New Zealand last September when she bowled Anneke Bosch, South Africa’s next-highest scorer behind Wolvaardt with 18. Left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone chimed in with two wickets and Sciver one.Slam DunkA week ago, Dunkley spoke of her desire to cement a place in England’s top order, having just been promoted to No. 3 for their 3-0 sweep of the ODIs. Opening for the first time in a T20I, she produced the most positive of results for her side’s experiment with her aggressive style up top, smacking a 39-ball 59 to overhaul slightly more than half of England’s meagre target.Dunkley closed out the powerplay at 50 for 2 after the early loss of Danni Wyatt and Bryony Smith – playing her fourth T20I but first in more than four years – with a brutal six over long-off from the bowling of Klaas, having heaved the same bowler a long way over deep midwicket in the second over. Another off Bosch over long-on completed her haul of sixes in an eye-catching innings that also included five fours. Dunkley eventually holed out to Khaka at deep midwicket off Bosch after an encouraging night’s work for the hosts.South Africa lose two more – players that isSince the drawn Test, very little has gone right for South Africa. Losing the subsequent three ODIs as well as three players, it cannot have been a happy camp heading into the first T20I. The abrupt retirement of explosive batter Lizelle Lee immediately after the Test amid considerable controversy, has now been followed by the departures of star allarounder Kapp and bowler Sekhukhune for family and injury reasons respectively.Related

Marizanne Kapp leaves England tour for family reasons, in doubt for Commonwealth Games

Both had played key roles in allowing South Africa to draw the rain-hit Test for their only points of the tour so far and as her team’s leading player in terms of form and experience, Kapp’s absence is another heavy blow, especially if, as expected, it extends to the Commonwealth Games. “Kapp has requested to travel back home to Gqeberha to be close to her family during this trying time,” CSA said in a statement.Sekhukhune experienced a groin problem while warming up for last Monday’s third ODI in Leicester and, after consultation with team medical staff, it was agreed she would begin her rehabilitation at home. Top-order batter Tazmin Brits was called into the South Africa squad as a replacement.

Brooks, King fifties give West Indies convincing consolation victory

Brandon King and Shamarh Brooks shared a 102-run opening partnership as West Indies struck a winning formula at last, beating New Zealand by eight wickets in the third T20I on Sunday to prevent a sweep of the three-match series. After making the bold decision to rest captain Nicholas Pooran, the hosts also played more than one spinner for the first time in the series and their bowlers flourished on a slow pitch at Sabina Park.New Zealand made only 145 for 7 after winning the toss, falling well short of its 185 for 5 in the first match and 215 for 5 in the second.West Indies reached their target with an over to spare, as stand-in captain Rovman Powell hit Jimmy Neesham for six to clinch the win and leave the series 2-1 in New Zealand’s favor.Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein, playing for the first time in the series, took 2 for 28 while allrounder Odean Smith took a career-best 3 for 29.King, who missed the first two matches of the series with injury, provided impetus for the run chase by taking 53 runs from 35 balls. Brooks carried his bat throughout the innings, finishing on 56 while Powell hurried the end by striking 27 from 15 balls.”It was very special being able to do this at home in front of everybody,” King said. “The support is incredible, my family is here and I’m happy to be able to deliver. I think consistency is the key. When you’re an opening batsman you try to give your team a good start.”Today credit has to be given to the bowlers. They did an excellent job for us and made my job that much easier.”New Zealand failed to replicate its performances of the first two victories when it made strong starts and built partnerships around Kane Williamson who made 47 in the first match and Glenn Phillips who made 76 in the second. On Sunday, Hosein came on in only the third over and immediately knocked over Martin Guptill to leave New Zealand 18 for 1.Devon Conway, Mitchell Santner and Williamson all made starts but struggled to impart momentum to the innings. That task fell again to Phillips who made 41 from 26 balls and was Player of the Series.Phillips needed to bat through but was out at a critical stage when New Zealand was 125 for 5 in the 17th over. New Zealand made big finishes in the first two matches, putting on 64 in the last five overs of the first two matches but managing only 39 in the last five overs this time.West Indies innings stood in complete contrast with the opening partnership between King and Brooks occupying 13.1 overs and making the result a foregone conclusion. King reached his half century from 30 balls and Brooks hung around to anchor the innings, posting his 50 from 52 deliveries.”The West Indies adapted to the conditions nicely,” Williamson said. “With the bat we felt if we could get another 15 or so we could get a bit of momentum but they were able to take wickets throughout an execute their plans beautifully.”They did the same thing with the bat and we couldn’t open up an end with the ball. We knew that with 140 things would have to go well for us with the ball and they outplayed us today.”The teams meet in the first of three ODIs on Wednesday.

Nottingham Forest make £22m bid to sign ace with same agent as Gibbs-White

In what could only push them further towards Champions League qualification, Nottingham Forest have now reportedly submitted a hefty bid to sign a Premier League forward.

Nottingham Forest transfer news

Those in the Midlands are rightly acting with all the ambition in the world after pushing into the Premier League’s top four. Without a defeat since the beginning of December, they’re better placed than ever in the Premier League to set their sights on a certain calibre of stars. It’s a rise which has already seen Forest linked with a number of impressive names, from Alex Baena all the way to Luiz Henrique.

Villarreal winger Alex Baena.

Reports have even gone as far as to suggest that Forest have activated the £50.7m release clause in pursuit of Baena as they look to fend off any competition and secure the arrival of the Villarreal midfielder this month.

Baena’s arrival would be quite the statement of intent from a side clearly eager to ensure that this season’s run is not just a flash in the pan and instead a permanent feature in England’s top flight.

2024 was a very fruitful year for the striker.

ByBarney Lane Jan 17, 2025

The Villarreal man isn’t the only one that those at the City Ground are reportedly willing to splash out on either. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Nottingham Forest have submitted a bid worth £22m to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford this month. As far as the Bees are concerned though, they’ll have to do better than that to secure the forward’s signature.

Whether Forest increase their bid to sign Wissa remains to be seen, but there’s no denying just how much of an impact he could make in the second half of the campaign. Given the fact that the Brentford man also has the same agent as Morgan Gibbs-White, personal terms could be easier than they otherwise would have been to agree.

"Remarkable" Wissa would be excellent signing

Amid doubts over Taiwo Awoniyi’s future, signing another forward certainly wouldn’t be a bad idea, especially if it is Wissa who enters the City Ground this month. The 28-year-old could be an instant upgrade on the West Ham-linked Awoniyi and would likely even force Nuno Espirito Santo into a change of system to accommodate a partnership between the Congo man and Chris Wood.

Two players outperforming their expected goals rate, Wissa and Wood could form one of the deadliest duos in the Premier League.

Those in the Premier League are already well aware of just how well the Brentford man can work in a partnership, given how successful he’s been alongside the equally impressive Bryan Mbeumo this season. Now, he could replicate that with the New Zealand international at the City Ground.

Previously described as “remarkable” by Brentford boss Thomas Frank, Wissa could have quite the decision to make in the closing weeks of the January transfer window if Forest come calling once again.
