The shock target Liverpool have now identified to replace Alexander-Arnold

As Arne Slot’s side continue to dominate in both the Champions League and Premier League, Liverpool have reportedly identified a shock target to potentially replace Trent Alexander-Arnold this summer.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds were far from at their best in midweek but showed the rest of European football the sign of champions by finding a way past a stubborn Girona side nonetheless, courtesy of Mohamed Salah’s penalty. Maintaining their Champions League top spot and advancing into the knockout stage as a result – becoming the first team to do so in the new format – the Reds will now turn their attention towards Fulham in the Premier League this weekend.

Away from the pitch, meanwhile, things are also looking up. Recent reports have indicated that both Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are nearing breakthroughs in their respective contract negotiations, which could finally see them put pen to paper on fresh deals to avoid a summer departure.

Whilst Alexander-Arnold has been offered a new deal, however – as per The Athletic’s David Ornstein – it remains to be seen whether he will be able to turn down the interest of European giants Real Madrid and the Reds are seemingly planning for the worst.

According to Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips, Liverpool have now identified Malo Gusto as a shock target to replace Alexander-Arnold should their academy graduate decide to leave at the end of the season.

Malo Gusto in action for Chelsea

Gusto has enjoyed quite the rise at Chelsea to end the Blues’ concerns over finding a replacement for the injury-prone Reece James. It speaks volumes that, even when the Chelsea captain is fit and starting these days, it is not Gusto who steps out of Enzo Maresca’s side.

Perhaps exacting revenge for Fernando Torres all those years ago though, Liverpool could decide to make their move for the impressive defender in 2025.

"Fantastic" Gusto would be the perfect candidate

Whilst it’s incredibly unlikely that Chelsea would even consider showing Gusto the door to complete a move to Anfield at the end of the season, it must be said that he would be a fairly seamless replacement for Alexander-Arnold – and that’s some doing. The right-back has already replaced James and has undoubtedly shown that he is more than talented enough to now replace the Premier League’s best if the offer came his way.

Performing close to the level of one of Europe’s best, it’s no surprise that Gusto recently earned the praise of Chelsea boss Maresca, who told reporters as relayed by Fabrizio Romano: “Fantastic player. I’m very happy with Malo. He’s giving us many things. He’s helping the process in the way we want to play a lot. He’s doing very, very well. For the age he has, he is top.”

In what would be one of the most shocking moves in 2025, Liverpool could yet welcome the ultimate Alexander-Arnold replacement when the summer arrives.

Former France international Lloris suffered World Cup final heartache as captain of his country when facing Argentina with a global crown up for grabs at Qatar 2022. Martinez was a hero for the Albiceleste, alongside Lionel Messi, as he delivered nerveless heroics in a thrilling shootout.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Many have questioned Martinez’s mind games, as he looks to get inside the head of opponents, but he is only fighting the corner of his club or country. Lloris has no issue with the enigmatic South American and considers him to be heading towards GOAT status.

  • WHAT HUGO LLORIS SAID

Lloris has told : “Yes, yes, I like Dibu. There are many questions about his personality, but I know he's someone who adds a lot of value. He has a great personality on and off the pitch.

“And although he's sometimes criticized for how he behaves on penalties, I think he's doing very well and is defending his goal, his country, his club. On penalties, he's one of the best, if not the best. But he's not just good on penalties; he's a great goalkeeper and has been fantastic in the Premier League with Aston Villa and instrumental in winning trophies with Argentina.

“To win trophies, you have to be a great goalkeeper. He has everything it takes to be one of the best, if not the best goalkeeper in Argentina's history. I have a lot of respect for him and I'm happy with his status.”

    WHAT NEXT?

Late bloomer Martinez only made his senior international debut in 2021. He now has a World Cup win and two Copa America triumphs to his name. At 32 years of age, there is still plenty left for him to achieve at the very highest level.

Slot must now unleash "special" Liverpool star who Man Utd nearly signed

Wintry conditions have cast a white blanket across Merseyside, but Liverpool will be determined to be the one issuing out a chilling bite as Arne Slot’s side prepare to host Manchester United in the Premier League.

First-placed Liverpool are five points clear of Arsenal with two games in hand, having been a cut above their rivals in the quest for the title this season. Few – if any – foresaw the events that have unfurled since the summer, but no one can deny the brilliance of this Reds side anymore.

Man United, in contrast, have shuffled down dire straits, sacking Erik ten Hag in November after dismal form that just couldn’t be shaken. Ruben Amorim arrived having dazzled in Portugal with Sporting Lisbon but has failed to get any kind of tune out of the Red Devils so far.

United are 14th in the standings and have lost five of their past six top-flight fixtures, though they claimed an Anfield point in similar conditions last year and that is something to bear in mind for the hosts, who will be brimming with confidence nonetheless.

Liverpool team news

In his pre-match press conference, Slot was delighted to confirm that Liverpool will welcome Conor Bradley and Ibrahima Konate back to the matchday squad, one month after they picked up issues during the comfortable Champions League victory over Real Madrid.

It’s unlikely that either will start, meaning Jarell Quansah will partner Virgil van Dijk in central defence, with Joe Gomez sidelined for the foreseeable.

Further up the field, Dominik Szoboszlai has served a one-match suspension and will hope to claim Curtis Jones’ starting berth, while Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota will be pushing to start up top. However, they shouldn’t get them with Luis Diaz in such fine fettle at number nine.

He’s not going to be playing on the left, in any case, for Cody Gakpo will reprise his role and potentially be the difference-maker against the club that flirted with his prized signature back in 2022.

Cody Gakpo could terrorise Man Utd

Liverpool signed Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 after his heroics at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, though Man United certainly felt that they were honing in on the Dutchman only days before.

Gakpo arrived at Liverpool during a tumultuous time but showed flashes of quality during that first under Jurgen Klopp, notably bagging twice during the Reds’ 7-0 romping over Ten Hag’s beleaguered unit.

He’s been a different beast within this new Liverpool set-up, however, and might be the secret star as United seek to prevent Mohamed Salah from hitting his stride.

Cody Gakpo celebrates for Liverpool

This is easier said than done, with the Egypt star having posted 20 goals and 17 assists across 26 matches for Liverpool this season. He also feasts upon his biggest rivals each term.

Conversely, Gakpo hasn’t scored or assisted in any of his past three fixtures against United, albeit starting each one from the bench.

He’ll have a point to prove and the means to enforce it. Gakpo has been a keen-edged attacking threat in his own right of late, scoring five goals from his past eight starts in the Premier League.

It’s remarkable that Gakpo ranks third on Salah’s all-time assist list at Liverpool, bespeaking the innate connection the pairing have as they operate on alternate flanks.

Man United won’t know what hit them, and travelling fans might just be left rueing their missed opportunity once again as the Slot machine drives even further forward.

Não me parece respeitoso.

Avaliação do trabalho no Flamengo

Elogios e críticas a João Gomes

Oli Carter's maiden hundred holds Sussex together

Sussex 245 for 7 (Carter 113*, Clark 55) vs GlamorganA maiden first-class hundred from Oli Carter was the highlight on day one of the LV= Insurance County Championship match between Glamorgan and Sussex in Cardiff as Sussex reached 245 for 7 at the close.Carter came to the crease with his team in trouble at 29 for two and finished the day on 113 not out. The next highest score was the 55 made by Tom Clark as regular wickets pegged back Sussex’s first innings.Andrew Salter bowled 33 overs in the day, conceding just 65 runs, as the Glamorgan seamers rotated from the other end. Carter and Harry Crocombe were batting together at the close of play with Sussex still closing in on a second batting point.Having put Sussex into to bat Glamorgan looked very dangerous with the new ball as Michael Neser and James Weighell picked up the wickets of Tom Alsop and Tom Haines early on. It could have been an even better start for Glamorgan with both openers getting a let off early on with chances going down in the slips. An excellent stand of exactly 100 between Clark and Carter took Sussex past the lunch break without any further damage with both looking in solid form. When the wicket of Clark arrived, it was from a loose shot as he tried to go over the top off the bowling of Salter only for the ball to loop up to Colin Ingram at mid-on.

Carter moved passed his previous career-best of 72 in an innings that showed a lot of maturity for a 20-year-old in just his 10th first class match. Even as wickets fell from the other end he stood firm, reaching his century from 208 deliveries.”I’m obviously delighted with my knock,” Carter said. “I hope it puts us in a good position tomorrow and hopefully we can crack on and win the game. We had lost [Haines] and [Alsop] early on so it made it more important for me and Clark to build a partnership and just progress from there.”The pitch was tricky. You just have to be patient and really wait for it. It is a bit slow in patches so you just had to really be patient and wait for the bad ball to come and try and rotate from those good balls.”Hogan returned to the attack to claim the wicket of Tim Seifert with a ball that ducked back into the New Zealander to bowl him for 5 as Glamorgan chipped away at the Sussex middle order.Related

Salter bowled a mammoth spell from the River Taff End, sending down 26 overs unchanged. He claimed his second wicket when he had Danial Ibrahim caught down the leg side off wicketkeeper Chris Cooke who had an excellent day with the gloves. The highlight for Cooke was when he got Delray Rawlins stumped while standing up to the seam of David Lloyd. The batter over balanced slightly and Cooke whipped off the bails to reduce Sussex to 192 for 6. Unfortunately for Cooke, he hobbled off the field with just 13 overs of the day’s with Ingram stepping in to keep wicket.Sussex moved passed 200 to claim their first bonus point but shortly after lost their seventh wicket when a ball from Neser got big on Archie Lenham and the batter edged the ball into his stumps. On a pitch that had markedly more bounce in it than the one that was used in the Vitality Blast match in Cardiff on Friday, it was still tricky to score freely, which made Carter’s first century all the more impressive with only Clark looking anywhere near as solid at the crease. It will be interesting to see just how telling Carter’s innings will be once Glamorgan have batted in their first innings.

Luke Hollman tilts see-saw contest fractionally in favour of Middlesex

Middlesex 188 and 180 for 6 (Hollman 37*, Pennington 3-37) lead Worcestershire 191 (Barnard 69, Roland-Jones 4-60) by 177 runsLuke Hollman’s unbeaten knock of 37 tilted a see-saw contest fractionally in Middlesex’s favour as they built a 177-run advantage against Worcestershire in their LV= Insurance County Championship match at Merchant Taylors’ School.Hollman – who top-scored with 62 in the first innings – shored up the lower order after Dillon Pennington’s three wickets had reduced his side to 139 for 6 second time around, extending that total by a further 41 at stumps. It sets up the prospect of an enticing finish on day three after Worcestershire had posted 191 to secure a wafer-thin three-run lead in their first innings, built around Ed Barnard’s undefeated 69.Toby Roland-Jones, who finished with figures of 4 for 60, then played a valuable role with the bat, keeping Hollman company at the crease until bad light brought play to a close.Resuming 88 behind, Worcestershire’s sixth-wicket pair progressed steadily through the opening half-hour and extended the partnership to 71 before a diving catch by Sam Robson in the slips accounted for Gareth Roderick (30).When Tim Murtagh had Joe Leach caught behind in the next over, the visitors still faced a deficit of 61 – but that was all but wiped out by Josh Baker, who dispatched Murtagh for consecutive cover boundaries and continued to go for his shots.Baker’s knock of 36 included six fours, with Roland-Jones also taking some punishment before he eventually had his man caught at midwicket by Jack Davies.Davies darted in to take a far trickier catch and remove Charlie Morris in Roland-Jones’ next over as the seamer quickly mopped up the Worcestershire tail by taking out Pennington’s off stump.Mark Stoneman restored Middlesex’s lead with the first ball of their second innings, nudging Leach to the boundary but his opening partnership with Sam Robson developed into a gritty one either side of lunch.Robson cut Barnard for four to lift the stand past 50, but Pennington immediately pegged Middlesex back with a double strike as Stoneman (27) top-edged a hook to long leg and Davies, fending one off to point, departed for a second-ball duck.Robson (35) eventually fell to a stunning return catch by Leach, flinging himself to his left to pull off a one-handed grab, while Baker removed Max Holden just before tea with a delivery that turned sharply to hit off stump.John Simpson announced his arrival at the crease by smashing Baker to the fence twice in succession, but the spinner returned after tea to trap Robbie White – who had battled hard for his 37 – leg before.Pennington prised out Simpson, taken low in the slips for a belligerent 26, before Hollman and Roland-Jones dug in to maintain Middlesex’s hopes of setting their opponents a tricky target in excess of 200.

Celtic lead the race to sign a "terrific talent" who’s the next Adam Idah

Fair to say, Celtic’s Tuesday night visit to Dens Park was a lot more eventful than anyone could’ve forecast.

When Celtic midfielder Luke McCowan headed home the opener against his former club inside five minutes, most assumed the champions would cruise to a comfortable victory in the City of Discovery.

However, Dundee hit back not once, not twice but three times, Cameron Carter-Vickers the scorer of an unfortunate own goal mere seconds after Yang Hyun-jun had nodded the Hoops in front, the visitors thereby requiring a 93rd minute Arne Engels spot-kick to salvage a draw.

Brendan Rodgers was clearly fuming at full time, but the two points dropped has little tangible consequence, with Celtic now 16 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership, ahead of Rangers’ clash with Aberdeen on Wednesday night.

When asked for an update about January transfers post-game by Sky Sports’ Luke Shanley, Rodgers said “nothing as of yet, I’ll probably find out over the next couple of days”, so could the Celts’ first signing of the window be imminent?

Celtic chasing a highly-rated teenager

As first reported by Mark McCadden of the Irish Mirror, Celtic are “leading the race” to sign St Patrick’s Athletic striker Mason Melia.

This came after Melia visited Glasgow last week for talks, having accepted a similar invitation from Tottenham before Christmas, while Serie A side Bologna are also mentioned as “eager” to sign him, with further interest from Bundesliga and Belgian clubs.

So who is Melia, and why is he so sought after?

Mason Melia's record at youth level

Still only 17-years-old, he’s made 54 appearances for League of Ireland side St Pat’s, scoring ten goals, helping the Red Army finish third last season.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Back in November 2023, he came off the bench as St Patrick’s Athletic beat fierce Dublin rivals Bohemians 3-1 in the FAI Cup Final.

The match was played in front of 43,881 supporters at the Aviva Stadium, a record-breaking attendance for an Irish cup final, with Melia becoming the youngest-ever player to feature in a FAI Cup Final, doing so at the age of just 16 years and 50 days.

Journalist Conor McEvoy described Melia as a “terrific talent”, with Mark Gallagher of Extra Ireland believing he is valued at €1m (around £835,000), which would smash the League of Ireland record, currently held by Liam Scales, who joined Celtic for €600,000 from Shamrock Rovers in 2021.

As noted by Football Insider, due to Brexit regulations, Melia cannot join a British club until after his 18th birthday, meaning no move will take place until January 2026 at the earliest, but that does not mean Celtic, or anyone else for that matter, cannot agree a deal now.

How Mason Melia would fit in at Celtic

Should the teenager choose to make the move to Parkhead, he would face tough competition for a starting spot from fellow strikers Kyōgo Furuhashi and Adam Idah.

Idah became an instant Celtic hero by scoring a 90th-minute winner against Rangers in last season’s Scottish Cup Final, but has not lived up to these lofty expectations since his move from Norwich was made permanent, at the huge cost of £9.5m.

He came in for scathing criticism from Sky Sports pundits Kris Boyd, Neil Lennon and James McFadden after Tuesday’s game, with Boyd saying “he doesn’t seem to be the same player” as last season, adding “he needs to do more”.

So, perhaps there would be room in the squad for Meila to make an impression?

Regardless of current form, Idah, as well as the aforementioned Scales, are simply the latest in a long line of Irish Celtic players, 22 have made a senior appearance to be exact, some of whom are amongst the club’s biggest legends.

Palma replacement: Celtic plotting to sign Hooper 2.0 in club-record move

Celtic are reportedly interested in a deal to sign the talented English forward.

ECB and Sky Sports extend English cricket rights deal until end of 2028

The ECB and Sky Sports have extended their broadcast partnership by a further four years, until the end of 2028.The new deal, which is set to begin in 2025, includes a commitment to 90 extra hours of cricket each year, and guarantees that the Hundred – the new competition that was a major factor in the last rights cycle for 2020-24 – will continue for at least another five seasons. That hike in live coverage includes a commitment to a 50 percent increase in the number of Vitality Blast fixtures being broadcast, including one game per round being shown free-to-air on Sky Sports’ YouTube channel. The exact details of the new deal’s free-to-air provisions will be confirmed at a later date – the BBC’s current agreement extends until the end of 2024 – although at least two women’s T20 internationals each year will be broadcast on terrestrial TV, as well as eight women’s Hundred matches – an increase of two from the current deal.Sky have also pledged to continue supporting grassroots cricket through the ECB’s Dynamos Cricket programme.Clare Connor, the ECB’s interim chief executive, said: “Sky have been fantastic partners for cricket for over 30 years. Their broadcast coverage is rightly lauded as the best in the world, but more significantly than that we have a shared commitment to growing the sport and investing in more opportunities, not only for people to watch and follow cricket in all its forms, but also to pick up a bat and ball.”Thanks to Sky and the support of other partners, we saw a record 14 million people playing, attending or following cricket in 2021. This year alone, 10,000 children will get the chance to have a free taste of cricket through Sky Dynamos Intros, while many, many more will benefit from facilities and opportunities to play which are only possible because of Sky’s investment. It shows this media rights model is working, and we are very grateful for Sky’s ongoing support.”We have worked closely with the wider game and our First-Class Counties to agree this new deal with Sky, which will see not only more live women’s and men’s cricket on Sky, but also more on free to air TV as well. I would like to place on record our thanks to the First Class County Chairs, to all of the Sky teams involved and to ECB colleagues including Tony Singh and Tom Harrison, who have played the central role in delivering this outstanding result for cricket.”Our shared values and vision with Sky will make cricket accessible to even more people over the coming years and will use the power of sport to inspire the next generation, while safeguarding the wonderful traditions which are such a key part of our game.”Stephen van Rooyen, Sky Sports’ EVP and CEO UK and Europe, added: “This is an exciting time for English cricket and we’re thrilled to be furthering our long and successful partnership with the ECB. Together we will continue to help grow the game while boosting participation in the sport by children from all backgrounds through initiatives like our Dynamos Cricket Intros.”On screen, we will continue to push boundaries in our BAFTA-winning coverage, bringing Sky Sports viewers even more live action from 2025 – including more women’s cricket than ever before – with men’s and women’s England internationals and domestic cricket. Sky’s investment over the last 30 years has contributed to a great deal of success on the pitch, and we hope to be at the forefront of much more to come.”

Barcelona forward Ferran Torres scored another goal on Wednesday night to help his team book a Clasico clash in the Copa del Rey final after eliminating Atletico Madrid. Indeed, a striking stat has revealed that the Spaniard needs less minutes to find the back of the net than any other player across Europe's top leagues.

Per Opta, Torres has the lowest minutes-per-goal ratio of all the players in the top five European leagues who have scored at least 10 goals in all competitions this season. Indeed, the 25-year-old has scored 16 times in 35 games while spending just 1,292 minutes on the pitch, equating to a goal every 81 minutes. It's even more eye-catching when one considers the fact that Torres has started just 12 games all season for Barcelona.
