WBBL spin stars Molly Strano and Alana King make club moves

Two of the WBBL’s leading spinners have moved teams ahead of the 2021-22 season. Molly Strano, the top wicket-taker in the tournament’s history, has left Melbourne Renegades to join Hobart Hurricanes and legspinner Alana King, who was a central figure in Melbourne Stars reaching last year’s final, has signed with Perth Scorchers. For both Strano and King the WBBL moves follow their interstate switches with the pair having joined Tasmania and Western Australia respectively.Offspinner Strano, who was part of the Australia’s T20 World Cup squad last year, is the only bowler with over hundred wickets in the WBBL (104 at 18.74).”I made my decision to come to the Tigers a while ago now, but when it came to deciding where I was going to play my WBBL cricket it was something I had to think long and hard about, and was one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make,” she said.”Moving down to Tassie was a big decision for me, so I decided to embrace the move wholeheartedly, and play for both Tasmanian teams. I’m looking forward to throwing myself in the deep end and learn what I can from this new environment, and I’m really excited for this next chapter of my cricketing career.”Meanwhile, King will now be playing for the side she had a huge role in putting out of last year’s WBBL in the semi-finals where she claimed 3 for 16 in the semi-final – taking out the powerhouse top three of Sophie Devine, Beth Mooney and Amy Jones – while she also showed her power with the bat down the order striking at 187.87 during the season.”Last season we saw first-hand the influence she can have on a match, her wrist spin can change a game while her power with the bat can swing momentum at the end of an innings too,” Scorchers head coach Shelley Nitschke said. The Scorchers also confirmed that Devine, who has been player of the tournament in the last two seasons, will return to the club. It gives them a very strong-looking top order alongside Mooney and Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu.

Graham Clark 141, Alex Lees 100 as Durham pass 400 to crush Kent

George Munsey rattles off 96 but Kent fall well short in their chase

ECB Reporters' Network22-Jul-2021Graham Clark and Alex Lees both hit centuries as Durham trounced Kent Spitfires by 103 runs in their Royal London Cup match at Beckenham. The visitors posted their highest ever 50-over score of 405 for 4, eclipsing their previous record of 353 for 8, set against Nottinghamshire in 2014.Clark hit 141 from 119 balls, with two sixes and 20 fours, while Lees made a relatively pedestrian 100 from 98, including one six and seven fours. David Beddingham then thrashed 67 and Cameron Bancroft finished unbeaten on 60.Chris Rushworth took 3 for 29 to flatten Kent’s top order and although George Munsey made 96 and Harry Finch 64, the hosts fell well behind the run rate and eventually closed on 302 for 8.On a sweltering day Kent won the toss, chose to field and repented at leisure: four catches went down off batters who went on to add a combined total of 225 after being reprieved. Finch dropped Lees when he was on 7 after he’d edged Harry Podmore, who himself spilled Clark when he was on 41. Beddingham was twice dropped in his thirties, first by Hamid Qadri and again by Tawanda Muyeye.Clark got to three figures with a push to midwicket and finally perished when he swatted Marcus O’Riordan to Matt Quinn. Lees reached his hundred with a pull off Quinn and although he hit the very next delivery straight to Darren Stevens, Beddingham maintained the momentum, hitting his first ball for six.Beddingham rode his luck before he eventually holed out to Stevens and was caught by Heino Kuhn. Sean Dickson was then brilliantly run out for 6 by Ollie Robinson, with a direct hit from square leg, but the runs kept flowing. Liam Trevaskis hit the next ball for six and the final over went for 20.Rushworth struck early in the Kent innings to remove Muyeye for 15, caught by Scott Borthwick. The same combination then removed Robinson for 8 and Kuhn for 6, reducing Kent to 50 for 3.Munsey and Finch put on 138 for the next wicket, but the former fell agonisingly close to his century when he swiped Paul van Meekeren to Trevaskis and Stevens made just 3 when he hit Jack Campbell to Lees. With the required rate rising to well over double figures, Finch was bowled by Luke Doneathy and Podmore chipped Trevaskis to Borthwick for 2. With the ground emptying rapidly, O’Riordan attempted to sweep Doneathy and was bowled for 22, although Qadri and James Logan showed some defiance to bat out the remaining overs and push the total over 300, finishing on 42 and 16 not out respectively.

Man Utd star who Carragher totally rinsed has now become undroppable

Since taking over at Manchester United in the summer of 2022, Erik ten Hag has put a heavy focus on signing players from his former club, Ajax.

Over each of the three summers he has been at the helm at Old Trafford, the Dutchman has brought in at least one player he used to manage at the Dutch giants.

In his first summer, he signed Lisandro Martinez and Antony, who cost an eye-watering £81.3m. In 2023, they brought in goalkeeper Andre Onana, before adding defensive pair Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich, who also played under the Dutchman at Ajax.

De Ligt scores against Southampton.

Have all of these moves gone according to plan? Well, Antony has been a notable dud and Martinez wasn’t received particularly well when he first stepped foot on English shores.

First impressions of Lisandro Martinez

It may seem odd that United’s manager has a strict transfer policy of signing his former players, although there is little argument against him on the face of things, given how successful his side was during his time in Amsterdam.

There was great speculation over a couple of the signings, including Antony, given his extortionate price. However, the player who arguably raised the most question marks was Argentine World Cup winner Martinez.

jean-clair-todibo-lisandro-martinez-tottenham-opinion

One of the issues many had about United’s number 6 was his height. Many were unsure if his slender 5 foot 9 frame would mean he’d struggle at centre-back in the Premier League. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher raised this issue on Sky Sports, calling the 26-year-old a “problem” for Ten Hag.

In full, the outspoken pundit noted: ” I’m convinced this can’t work because of the size of him playing in a back four. Maybe he could go left back, maybe he could play in a back three, but in a back four, he cannot play there in the Premier League.”

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

Martinez’s stats for Man United

Despite the criticism the defender has faced, the Argentine has gone on to prove Carragher, and other doubters wrong by his performances in that famous red shirt over the past two seasons.

Despite injury issues that have seen him miss 56 games in his first two seasons at the club, Martinez has proven to be a key part of Ten Hag’s side.

He has now played 64 games for the Red Devils, scoring one goal against Arsenal in 2022/23, and has played an important part in United’s Carabao Cup and FA Cup triumphs.

Although he featured just twice in their FA Cup win last term, he was crucial in the final against Manchester City, in which the 13-time winners of the competition ran out 2-1 victors.

Lisandro Martinez

A large reason for this was the fact he played alongside Raphael Varane. The duo formed an iconic pair for the Red Devils, despite playing just 33 times with each other. They managed 21 wins as a partnership – the last one being the victory at Wembley – and just five defeats.

Although their time as a pairing was short, it was one that will no doubt live long in the memory of United fans. United captain Bruno Fernandes was certainly a fan of the duo, once explaining they “complement each other very good”.

Now with a new long-term partner in De Ligt, and his injury problems hopefully behind him, Martinez has made a good start to the 2024/25 campaign. According to Sofascore, the South American averages 2.3 interceptions per game, 3.8 ball recoveries and an impressive 94% pass accuracy.

Despite his injury troubles, Martinez has certainly gone a long way to proving Carragher, and his doubters wrong. The Liverpool legend thought he would be an issue for United in defence, but in fact, he has been the opposite; an undroppable player, an integral reason for winning silverware and a man quickly becoming a cult hero at Old Trafford.

Man Utd thought they had the next CR7, now he's worth even less than Antony

The talented international just could not make it work at United, and now he’s playing outside of Europe entirely.

O Campeonato Carioca é o primeiro desafio.

100% Everton man may have just saved Sean Dyche’s job

Everton finally managed to secure their first Premier League victory of the season, beating Crystal Palace 2-1 at Goodison Park.

Despite going 1-0 down after just ten minutes, the Toffees were able to pull it back, with Dwight McNeil scoring a second-half brace to win them the game, securing three points.

Dwight McNeil

This win takes Sean Dyche’s side to 15th in the Premier League, having lost four games, drawn one and won one in their opening six.

This could see Dyche’s job safe – for now – after last weeks of speculation that he could be sacked after his poor start to the campaign.

Dyche's torrid start to the season

This was Everton’s first win of the season in the Premier League, with their only other point coming in a 1-1 draw against Leicester.

One of their most disappointing performances came against Bournemouth, where the Toffees were leading 2-0 in the 86th minute before three late goals (87th, 92nd, and 96th) saw the Merseysiders lose yet again.

Everton hold the least amount of possession in the league, with 36.9% on average, and also have the worst pass accuracy, with 76.3% on average, but they aren’t defending well either.

Most sides that concede this amount of possession rely on their defensive structure to keep them in games, looking to hit teams on the break to get a result.

The Toffees have conceded 15 goals in six matches, the second worst in the division, only better than the 16 conceded by Wolves.

However, Everton may have just been handed their lifeline, with Jarrad Branthwaite’s return, which could play a huge part in saving Dyche’s job.

Branthwaite the saviour

On his return to action, Branthwaite scored an 8/10 match rating from the Liverpool Echo, making five clearances, three interceptions, two tackles and completing 100% of his dribble attempts throughout the clash.

The 22-year-old defender was one of Everton’s standout players last season, attracting interest from clubs such as Manchester United this summer.

The English defender also won 100% of his ground duels (4/4), and 50% of his aerial duels (3/6) during the game, playing a big part in Everton only conceding one goal, and managing their first victory of the campaign.

Comparing Branthwaite with the two Everton central defenders that started this season, James Tarkowski, and Michael Keane, you can see the 22-year-old offers the highest pass completion – a stat Everton are struggling with this season – and tackles made, a particularly important one for defenders.

The return of the young centre-back to the side will help improve them in important metrics, whilst also adding a 6 foot 5 frame to the backline, who can also recover at speed.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

This is a rare profile, having a player with such physical attributes, who is also tidy on the ball, and his timely return could be exactly what is needed for Dyche to save his job.

Waqar Younis 'proud' of Pakistan bowling unit for creating chances despite loss

Pakistan might have ended up losing at Sabina Park on Sunday but bowling coach Waqar Younis said he is “proud” of the bowling unit that kept creating opportunities in a low-scoring Test. The match, which had one of the most thrilling finishes in recent times, was just the 15th instance of a one-wicket win in Test history. The visitors had taken some extraordinary catches but had dropped several crucial ones too – they dropped three in the final session, two of which involved Kemar Roach who later went on score the winning runs.”There was no better Test match than this to advocate Test cricket,” Waqar said in a virtual press conference. “Unfortunately we were on the wrong side as we should have won the game. But that’s the way it is.. one team had to lose and unfortunately it was us, and of course, it happens only when you commit mistakes and [dropped] catches played the big part. When you miss so many opportunities in such tense moments then that will definitely hurt you.Related

  • Kemar Roach: 'I have never been in a situation like that before'

  • Babar Azam rues 'dropped catches in clutch phases'

  • West Indies' memorable Test wins this century

  • Ghosts of glorious pasts haunt a West Indies-Pakistan classic

  • Stats – West Indies maintain perfect record in sub-200 chases

“But overall if you analyse the bowling I must say all the bowlers bowled really well throughout the Test match. Despite the small target, they put in all the hard work, responded well, the way they fought in the game, and never let it go easily. Bowlers are meant to create opportunities. Yes, West Indies were 114 for 7 but then after that, there were three opportunities as well and if you are not grabbing them it won’t help you. They kept on taking wickets and creating opportunities so with all this I feel very proud of this bowling unit.”Pakistan were originally scheduled to play three Tests but both boards reworked the series to play two extra T20Is instead. This tour has been affected by rain right from the start, with three out of four T20Is washed out. The first Test was disrupted by rain too but the overcast conditions allowed fast bowlers to dictate terms. The second Test starts from August 20 at the same venue. Waqar wasn’t too optimistic about the weather but he expects help for the fast bowlers once again.”There was a lot of support especially for fast bowlers,” he said about the first Test. ” Ball was seaming, conditions were overcast at times and it wasn’t easy for batting. Bowler had more say on it hence it was a low-scoring Test match. One has to apply himself on such pitches and has to be positive as a bowler and as a batter.”Sometimes you have to take risks to score runs and whoever scored runs was taking risks to build up the board. So with the new ball, you have to remain positive, and going forward if the conditions remain the same it won’t be easy for batters. There was bounce and I don’t know what we will get in the next game and it’s hard to tell but looking around from the first Test expect grass on the pitch. The ball will seam around and expect us to play with the same spirit.”Waqar added that the experienced Mohammad Abbas and Yasir Shah were match-winners and have done well to stay relevant. Abbas picked up three wickets in the first innings with the new ball and though his tally dried up with the older one, he kept the scoring rate in check, giving away only 1.95 runs per over.”Abbas – I thought he bowled beautifully,” Waqar said. “On some days in cricket – especially in Test cricket – luck isn’t with you. Otherwise, the way he was bowling he should have taken a lot more wickets. Unfortunately, he couldn’t get the edges and that’s part of the game. But I have no doubt that Abbas is a wonderful professional with the sort of effort he puts in but he was bowling great though the wickets tally isn’t what we were expecting.”Yasir’s track record against West Indies is great. He overall has 250 wickets and has tons of experience with him. His past performance is very good and he is a match-winner and you can’t really ignore him. Sometimes the pitch isn’t conducive enough for spinners in fact both sides haven’t got enough for spinners. Nauman Ali is a wonderful cricketer but the pitch wasn’t supporting a fingerspinner”

Russell Martin is under pressure

It has been a poor start to the new season for Southampton, as they are winless and pointless in their opening three league games. Their latest game before the international break saw them be beaten 3-1 by Brentford, a game that the Saints should be seeing as a chance to pick up some points as they look to avoid relegation back to the Championship.

However, Southampton were brushed aside quite easily, with Russell Martin expressing his disappointment with the result and performance.

Martin told reporters: "We're very disappointed with the result and the goals we conceded. I feel like we're hurting ourselves a little bit. We had the best chance in the first half with Adam Armstrong.

"It's about taking a breath in that moment; that's my job to get rid of the tension. I don't think there was much in it between the two teams. We have to stop making mistakes that hurt us."

His playing style is starting to come under threat, and according to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Martin’s style may now lead to him being sacked. Some of the club’s hierarchy are said to want the Southampton boss to take a more pragmatic approach to picking up points in the league rather than an expansive style of play and receive no reward at the end of it, but Martin is said to be keen on keeping with this approach.

Chile manager may be sacked after astonishing Brereton Diaz call

Southampton striker Ben Brereton Diaz was at the centre of an astonishing moment in midweek, as his Chile manager Ricardo Gareca decided to substitute the player off after only 35 minutes of football.

That decision from Gareca caused immediate backlash and anger from pundits and supporters. Chilean pundit Rodrigo Herrera criticised the substitution after the game, claiming it had a negative impact on both Brereton Diaz and the entire squad, as they lost 2-1 to Bolivia.

Herrera said on the shock decision: “He killed him; I don't understand. As much as he likes the system, as much as he considers him dispensable for whatever reason, I didn't see the team improving that much with Pizarro's entry.

“He did show attitude, but to kill a player of that calibre, the only striker, the only '9' we had in the Premier League, wait 45 minutes.
