Ollie Pope to miss four Surrey Blast fixtures after being required to self-isolate

Matt Roller16-Jun-2021Ollie Pope will miss Surrey’s next four T20 Blast fixtures after coming into contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19.Pope, the middle-order batter, had been due to link up with his county this week following England’s Test series defeat against New Zealand, but has been forced into self-isolation in line with track-and-trace protocols. He will miss home games against Sussex, Hampshire, Essex and Somerset, but is expected to be available for the London derby against Middlesex on June 25. Surrey are currently unbeaten in their Blast campaign, having won each of their opening three fixtures.”Ollie Pope will not be available to play cricket until June 24 having had contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19,” a Surrey statement said. “He will now have to self-isolate until that time.Related

“Pope did not come into contact with the individual during his time with England in the recent LV= Insurance Test series against New Zealand and he has not had any contact with any Surrey CCC players or staff.”A handful of county cricketers have missed games this season due to Covid-related issues. Ben Duckett missed Nottinghamshire’s win against Northamptonshire on Sunday as a precaution, while Tom Helm, the Middlesex seamer, has been self-isolating after testing positive, ruling him out of the early rounds of the Blast. The rest of England’s Test squad have either returned to their counties already or are due to shortly, though Rory Burns has been given a short break by Surrey and will return next week.Chris Woakes – who has bowled 18 overs in the last nine months – has been rested for Birmingham Bears’ fixture against Leicestershire on Wednesday night in order to manage his workload after a long break. Michael Edwards now sends Liverpool officials to scout 24 y/o rising star

Liverpool have reportedly sent officials to watch a “progressive” young defensive midfielder in action, as they look to snap him up in the January or summer 2025 transfer window.

Liverpool's midfield search goes on

The Reds made it clear that they wanted to complete the signing of Real Sociedad ace Martin Zubimendi during the summer transfer window, with the Spaniard considered the primary target to master the No.6 role in front of the defence. He ended up deciding to remain at his current club, however, acting as a blow to Arne Slot.

No other midfielder arrived, and while Slot still has a plethora of options at his disposal in his squad, Liverpool continue to be linked with new signings in the middle of the park.

Martin Zubimendi in action

Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton is another player who has been mentioned as a target is the last month or so, having burst onto the scene at Selhurst Park midway through last season after arriving from Blackburn Rovers, even being named in England’s squad for Euro 2024, but he would be extremely expensive.

Representatives of free agent Adrien Rabiot are also believed to have approached Liverpool about a move for the 29-year-old, but the Reds didn’t show an interest in him, despite his pedigree as a top-level midfielder.

Liverpool send scouts to watch "progressive" midfielder

According to a fresh report from TEAMtalk, Liverpool are among the clubs to have sent scouts to watch Angel Gomes in action, with Michael Edwards ensuring there were representatives from Anfield watching Lille’s 1-0 defeat at Saint-Étienne this past week as they eye a January move.

The 24-year-old’s profile has grown in recent weeks because of his call-up to Lee Carsley’s England squad, with the former Manchester United ace now plying his trade in Ligue 1.

Gomes could be such an intriguing signing for Liverpool, not least because of the controversial nature of his United past, and he showed on England duty what he is capable of. Against the Finland earlier this month, he completed 94% of his passes and played three out of four accurate long balls, while Ian Wright heaped praised on him after the game.

“Seeing Angel Gomes in that midfield, constantly on the move whether he’s high up, middle, or at the back for us in the six. He was doing progressive things, everything he was doing was very progressive. And again, all the time, constantly available in any area, wanting the ball.”

At 24, Gomes is at the perfect age to come in and be a success straight away, possessing enough experience in his career and also being young enough to improve further under Slot in the No.6 role.

Drama in PSL Eliminator 2 – Peshawar Zalmi field with ten men as umpires deny substitute for Mohammad Irfan

The confusion was because the umpires wanted to ensure Irfan’s injury was genuine

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Jun-2021

Mohammad Irfan finished with 1 for 21 before going down with cramps•Pakistan Super League

A strange passage of play briefly left the Peshawar Zalmi fielding with ten men during the second PSL 2021 eliminator against the Islamabad United on Tuesday, after their pacer Mohammad Irfan left the field because of an injury.Haider Ali, the substitute sent out by the Zalmi, was asked to leave the field by the umpires, who were apparently not convinced that Irfan was injured, leaving Zalmi down by a man.In the 11th over of the United innings, Irfan, who was bowling the final over of his spell, went down after his penultimate delivery. Following a delay, he got back up to complete the over, but fell to the ground again. During the 12th over, Irfan was taken outside the boundary for treatment, with Ali coming on to replace him. However, at the end of the 12th over, bowled by Amad Butt, Aleem Dar, the onfield umpire, signalled that Ali should not be allowed to field, causing another lengthy delay. After a break in play, with Irfan still receiving treatment, Ali also stepped out of the field, meaning the Zalmi had to bowl the 14th and 15th overs without Irfan or a substitute fielder.Eventually, at the start of the 16th over, after a conversation between Dar, the Zalmi captain Wahab Riaz, and Shoaib Malik, also of the Zalmi, the team was allowed to bring in another substitute, Khalid Usman taking the field.ESPNcricinfo understands that the delay was caused because the umpires wanted to ensure Irfan’s injury was genuine, and when they got a confirmation of the same from the paramedics at the ground, they allowed the substitution.During a timeout in United’s innings, Irfan’s team-mate Butt suggested that the pacer’s injury was only a case of cramps.

49ers must finally cash in on Leeds star who wants to copy Gray & Rutter

Leeds United lost a number of their key players after the team failed to earn promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking last season.

The Whites lost 1-0 to Southampton in the play-off final at Wembley in May, after finishing third in the division, and are now in their second campaign in the Championship.

Daniel Farke had to watch on as Archie Gray, Georgino Rutter, Crysencio Summerville, and Glen Kamara all moved on from Elland Road on permanent deals.

It was reported that Gray and Rutter both had £40m release clauses, which were activated by Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton, and it was recently claimed that a current Leeds player wants to copy them.

Illan Meslier's contract situation

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT last week, journalist Ben Jacobs revealed that Illan Meslier would like to have a release clause in his contract in West Yorkshire.

The report claimed that the left-footed shot-stopper would like to protect himself in the event that Leeds fail to earn promotion again, with a clause that would allow him to join a top-flight side.

Meslier is currently contracted through to the summer of 2026 and this means that, if the Whites opt against cashing in on him, the Frenchman could remain in the second tier for another two seasons, barring a promotion.

Jacobs, however, added that the 49ers are looking to remove such clauses from current contracts and are reluctant to insert them into future deals, which suggests that the French goalkeeper may not get his wish in negotiations over fresh terms.

49ers must finally ditch Illan Meslier

With this recent news in mind, the 49ers and Leeds must finally cash in on the dud because he is seemingly already thinking about moving on from the club if they fail to win promotion.

After watching so many key players move on due to release clauses this summer, the Whites cannot allow their assets to control their own future and potentially leave the team shorthanded when teams come in to activate the clause.

Therefore, the 49ers should brutally ditch Meslier and bring in a goalkeeper who is committed to the long-term cause under Farke, whether that is in January or next summer.

As you can see in the table above, the 24-year-old dud significantly underperformed as a shot-stopper by conceding 4.49 more than expected based on the xG of the efforts on his goal, whilst he also made two direct errors that led to a shot or a goal.

Meslier kept 18 clean sheets in the Championship last season, sharing the Golden Glove with West Brom's Alex Palmer, but these statistics suggest that the Leeds defence deserved that accolade more than the Frenchman.

The Whites liability also let in a staggering 28.6 more goals than expected based on the post-shot xG against him across the 2021/22 and 2022/23 Premier League seasons.

The Whites youngster appears to be a promising talent within the academy.

ByDan Emery Sep 10, 2024

These statistics do not suggest that Meslier's performances have been good enough in recent years to warrant wanting a release clause for a bigger move, which is another reason why the 49ers should look to ditch him and sign a better, and more committed, goalkeeper.

Matt Quinn leaves Essex for Kent after successful loan spell

Matt Quinn, the New Zealand-born seamer, has signed for Kent on a deal that runs to the end of the 2024 season after slipping down the pecking order at Essex.Quinn, 28, went on loan to Kent earlier this season after they suffered a seam-bowling injury crisis and took 12 wickets in four County Championship fixtures at an average of 19.33. He has signed for the club on loan for the rest of the season, and will be on a permanent, three-year contract from 2022 onwards.Quinn initially joined Essex in late 2015, playing 60 games for the club across formats. His opportunities were limited by injury, and by the depth of Essex’s seam-bowling stocks.”We’re delighted that Matt has chosen to join us on a long-term basis,” Paul Downton, Kent’s director of cricket, said. “He has already shown his ability in a Kent shirt this season and he fitted in really well in the dressing room during his loan spell. He brings something different to our seam attack as we continually look to improve the strength and depth of our squad.”Related

Anthony McGrath, Essex’s head coach, said: “He has had to face long periods out of the game due to the back injury he sustained in 2017 but has worked hard to get back into first-team contention ever since. We are blessed with very talented bowlers at the club but unfortunately, Matt has sometimes found his opportunities limited as a result.”Meanwhile, Worcestershire have announced the signing of Jacques Banton – the younger brother of Somerset and England batter Tom – on a rookie contract for the rest of the summer. Banton, an allrounder who bowls left-arm spin, has been playing regularly for the club’s second XI, and could come into first-team contention in the T20 Blast when Moeen Ali links up with England’s white-ball squad on Saturday.Alex Gidman, the club’s head coach, described Banton as “a genuine allrounder” and confirmed he would come under consideration for selection. “He strikes the ball cleanly and has got quite a lot of nous about how he plays the game with both bat and ball,” he said.”He has the same skill set as his brother Tom in being a powerful batsman, and they are both allrounders but just in different ways. We are looking at bringing him on board to get him around the group, and it gives us another potential player for selection if needed.”

Kiran Carlson, Chris Cooke make hay as Glamorgan have a field day

Glamorgan 462 for 4 (Carlson 170*, Cooke 133*) lead Northamptonshire 215 by 247 runsGlamorgan’s batters had a field day against Northamptonshire in their LV= Insurance County Championship clash, with Kiran Carlson and Chris Cooke both notching unbeaten centuries.Carlson’s sublime 170 not out was the jewel in the crown of Glamorgan’s 462 for 4 as he and captain Cooke (133 not out) shared an unbeaten club record fifth-wicket stand of 307.Earlier in the day, Marnus Labuschagne (77) and Billy Root (45) also recorded a century partnership as Northamptonshire’s bowlers toiled. The Welsh side lead by 247 runs and will hope to bowl 10-man Northamptonshire out on the final day to seal what would be a shock victory.Overnight batsman Labuschagne and Root had an untroubled first hour against a Northamptonshire seam attack without the injured Gareth Berg.Australian star Labuschagne smashed 276 for Glamorgan’s seconds last week and looked in effortless form again which was summed up by a superb drive through mid-on for four.It forced the visitors to introduce spin option Simon Kerrigan into the attack. Labuschagne went to his 50 from 76 balls with eight fours thanks to a cut boundary from the bowling of Ben Sanderson.Labuschagne’s wonderful on-drive for four took his and Root’s partnership past the three-figure mark with the latter more restrained but equally comfortable. Labuschagne looked completely untroubled and his shots grew increasingly aggressive so it was a surprise when he was clean bowled by Luke Procter for 77 when looking to leave.Root followed him in the same fashion and in the same over when he chopped on for 45 attempting to play a cut shot when the ball was too close to his body.Chris Cooke celebrates his century•Getty Images

Carlson and Cooke took Glamorgan past Northamptonshire’s first-innings total of 215 and into the lead after lunch as they built on their top order’s good work.Carlson did edge Kerrigan for four between wicketkeeper and slip, but he and Cooke were otherwise untroubled even though there were two brief stoppages for rain. Carlson went to 50 from 81 balls with seven fours, but after the second break he was dropped by Rob Keogh off his own bowling as he delivered nine overs with Berg on the sidelines.Soon, Carlson and Cooke’s partnership was worth 100 with the latter bringing up his 50 from 87 balls. Glamorgan went to tea on 295 for 4 and in control.Northamptonshire took the new ball for the third session, but Carlson remained unperturbed as he went to his third century of the season from 151 balls with a four off Procter through the leg side.Cooke was dropped on 79 off the bowling of Sanderson by Kerrigan at point which summed up the visitors’ day. It allowed the Glamorgan wicketkeeper to reach three figures from 186 balls with just four fours. His team also went well past 400 in the final session as both batsmen opened up with an overnight declaration possible.

Tottenham showing interest in "elegant" star who plays "like Chris Waddle"

Tottenham Hotspur centre-forward Dominic Solanke opened his goalscoring account for the club with a strike against Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday. The England international rebounded James Maddison’s miss to tap the ball into an empty net, after failing to score in his first three appearances for Spurs.

Daniel Levy agreed a club-record fee of up to £65m to sign the former Chelsea and Liverpool prospect from fellow top-flight side Bournemouth in the summer transfer window.

Spurs could now turn to another player from lower down in the Premier League table, as they are reportedly eyeing up a Southampton starlet to further boost the attacking depth at the manager’s disposal.

Latest Tottenham transfer news

According to HITC, Tottenham are showing an interest in Southampton midfielder Tyler Dibling ahead of the upcoming January transfer window. The report claims that Spurs were one of a number of Premier League sides to send scouts to watch the winger in action against Ipswich Town on Saturday, as they watched him open the scoring for Russell Martin’s side.

Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Brighton, West Ham, and Manchester United were also keeping tabs on the 18-year-old whiz, which shows that he is attracting plenty of interest already this season.

The outlet does not, however, reveal how much Southampton would demand for his services, should any of those teams come in with a formal approach for him in January. It now remains to be seen whether or not Spurs are prepared to act upon their interest by swooping to secure his signature ahead of the second half of the season.

Why Tyler Dibling would be an exciting signing

During TalkSPORT’s commentary of Manchester United’s 3-0 win over the Saints earlier this month, Sam Matterface claimed the teenager has a “classic” winger style and “looks a little bit like Chris Waddle back in the day with his shirt untucked”.

Tyler Dibling for Southampton.

If Dibling goes on to be anywhere near as good as Waddle, who scored 41 goals in 165 games for Spurs and earned 62 caps for England, then the Southampton starlet will have done well.

The teenage ace won a penalty in that defeat to the Red Devils, beating Diogo Dalot and forcing the defender into a foul, but it was subsequently missed by Cameron Archer.

Dibling has only started two league matches for the Saints but has already scored his first goal in the division, created five chances and completed nine dribbles. The England U19 international, who was described as an “elegant” talent by scout Jacek Kulig, earned his chance in the first-team after a return of eight goals and six assists in 27 games for Southampton B and already looks ready to contribute at the top end of the pitch at Premier League level.

Tottenham could, therefore, bring him in as an exciting prospect for Ange Postecoglou to coach and develop over the coming years, as Dibling still has plenty of time left to improve at the age of 18 and would not be expected to make an immediate huge impact for Spurs.
