Forget Fullkrug: West Ham to bid for "complete forward" who’d be Tevez 2.0

West Ham United are gearing up for the 2024/25 Premier League campaign under new manager Julen Lopetegui, with the aim of bettering their ninth-place finish last season and returning to the European qualification spots.

They have already been busy in the market, acquiring Wolves defender Max Kilman, and highly rated Brazilian, Luis Guilherme, but the transfer activity doesn't look set to conclude there.

The Hammers continue to be linked with a host of players, in a host of different positions, including recent links to Borussia Dortmund striker Niclas Füllkrug, who scored two goals at Euro 2024 for Germany.

West Ham's search for a striker

According to reports from Bolavip Brasil, West Ham are ready to make their first official offer to Corinthians for talented striker, Yuri Alberto. The report suggests the Hammers have made recent inquiries about the player, and are expected to make that interest official.

Corinthians striker Yuri Alberto

The report also indicates Everton were interested in the 23-year-old forward. However, no official offer was made by the Toffees, and other names have been prioritised by Sean Dyche and co.

Alberto made 36 appearances in all competitions last season for Corinthians, scoring 17 goals, providing three assists, and totalling 2,679 minutes of football.

Why Alberto can be West Ham's new Carlos Tevez

Alberto has been dubbed as a "complete forward" by Jacek Kulig, praising his powerful, athletic qualities and killer instinct. His ability to be a nuisance up top, using that athleticism, speed and tenacity, brings the comparison of a certain Carlos Tevez.

Tevez made 29 appearances in all competitions for West Ham in the 2006/07 season, scoring seven goals and providing four assists to help steer the club clear of relegation, with his overall work rate and effort – which saw him described as "like a terrier" by Sir Alex Ferguson – subsequently earning him a move to Manchester United.

West Ham could be looking for lightning to strike twice, acquiring another striker from Corinthians (same as Tevez), who can provide a wide set of skills to the Hammers forward line.

While a lesser-known target, that comparison to Tevez should make Alberto a worthy option to consider for the Hammers and a perfect alternative to the aforementioned Fullkrug as the club's new number nine.

Fullkrug made 46 appearances for Dortmund in all competitions last season, scoring 16 goals, providing ten assists, and totalling 3,605 minutes, proving to be an important player in their Champions League run, finishing runners-up.

niclas-fullkrug

Both strikers bring different assets. Fullkrug is more of a hold-up play centre-forward, bringing others into play, using his 6 foot 2 frame, winning aerial duels as seen by his 3.49 aerials won per 90 metric, and being a threat in the box.

Alberto is smaller at 5 foot 10, but is a more complete archetype of striker, running the channels and being a counter-attacking threat, linking up play, while proving very instinctive and clinical around the box, but also good in the air for his height.

The 23-year-old Corinthians striker offers the extra shot volume in attack for the Hammers, averaging 3.04 per 90, whilst bringing that complete centre-forward play to the club, allowing him to link up with the wide men, who offer such a huge goal threat of their own.

As stated above, Alberto may be something of a left-field choice, but as the Irons found with the signing of Tevez, looking to the South American market can prove fruitful.

Arsenal have looked into signing £205,000-per-week Real Madrid star

Arsenal have looked into signing a Real Madrid superstar to shore up one key area of Mikel Arteta's team this summer, and there is a belief that sporting director Edu Gaspar may well bring in one more addition after the heavily linked Mikel Merino.

Arsenal could make eleventh-hour move for attacker after Merino

The north Londoners are apparently prepared to make an eleventh-hour move to sign a new attacker for Arteta, once they finally seal an agreement for Merino, after weeks of rumoured talks with Real Sociedad.

Real Sociedad make "ambitious" Merino demand after failed £26m Arsenal bid

The La Liga side are playing hardball.

ByEmilio Galantini Aug 16, 2024

Arsenal remain locked in discussions over a deal for Merino, with the Spaniard already agreeing personal terms over a move to north London (Fabrizio Romano), so the transfer appears to rest on whether Edu can find a Sociedad compromise in negotiations.

Once, or if, they get a deal for Merino finalised at long last – then attention will switch to whether Arteta's side can bring in a new forward before the summer transfer cut-off at the end of this month.

Various reports this week have claimed that Arsenal could lodge a last-minute summer bid to sign a forward after Merino, with journalist Steve Kay claiming that his sources expect the Gunners to do something "big" near the end of August.

"I’m expecting a midfielder to come in and I’m expecting someone up front to come in," said Kay.

"I have a funny feeling they’re working on something big, I have this sneaky feeling from speaking to people and how we’ve been doing our business, people I’m talking to seem to think something big is going to happen."

A wide array of wide players, who could help to alleviate the pressure on Bukayo Saka's shoulders, have been linked throughout the summer. Arsenal held a keen interest in Athletic Bilbao starlet Nico Williams, but the Spaniard now appears set to remain at his current club.

Edu also considered Pedro Neto before he joined London rivals Chelsea, but a very high-profile star in Real Madrid winger Rodrygo is someone they also pondered moving for.

Arsenal have looked at signing Rodrygo from Real Madrid

That is according to journalist Dean Jones, who told GiveMeSport that Arsenal looked into doing a deal for Rodrygo "a while back" in the transfer window.

The £205,000-per-week Brazil sensation scored 17 goals and assisted nine others across 51 appearances in all competitions under Carlo Ancelotti last season, so it would've been a phenomenal coup by Edu to get a move for the "special" Rodrygo over the line.

Considering just how crucial he is for Real, this transfer always looked a very difficult one to pull off, as his sky-high salary and £136 million price tag appear pretty unattainable from an Arsenal perspective.

The 23-year-old has been linked with a Bernabeu exit this summer, but Rodrygo has played down reports linking him with a Real Madrid departure.

Enquiry made: PIF want "incredible" talent who’d be Newcastle’s own Palmer

Newcastle United have been utterly transformed under the management of Eddie Howe. The Toon were turned toward the skies financially following the PIF-backed takeover in 2021, but a lesser manager would have failed to pump such glitter and gusto into St. James' Park.

Last season, Newcastle performed in the Champions League and gave a good account of themselves, contentiously finishing bottom but impressing despite being plagued by injuries.

It was such injuries that pulled at the Magpies throughout the campaign, and now depth is needed to restore the squad to its former verve. Additions are required across the frontline, and new sporting director Paul Mitchell is centring on an exciting player indeed.

Newcastle transfer news

As per GIVEMESPORT, Newcastle are interested in signing Manchester City talent Oscar Bobb this summer, having made contact with the Premier League champions to determine the feasibility of a transfer, in the form of an enquiry.

Manchester City's Oscar Bobb

Bobb made his senior debut at the Etihad Stadium last September, in a 5-1 league victory over Fulham, and played a valuable part in the Citizen's top-flight title triumph.

Borussia Dortmund have also enquired about the versatile attacking midfielder's availability, and GMS reveal that City are in serious danger of losing the rising star before the transfer window slams shut in just over one month.

What Oscar Bobb would bring to Newcastle

Man City boss Pep Guardiola has recently hailed Bobb's "incredible potential" and indeed it's clear that this is a player with the propensity for show-stopping moments fitting for a club of such a stature.

Last season, he posted two goals and two assists apiece across all competitions, and while he featured 26 times, only seven appearances started with the opening whistle.

Dynamic and versatile, he is confident across the frontline and could benefit Newcastle immensely in this regard, plying his trade wherever Howe deems beneficial to the outfit as a whole.

Sure, Bobb played a limited amount of football last season, with his 819' minutes played across all competitions less than that of Lewis Hall (967'), but he managed to showcase his talents expertly, clearly a menace in the final third with sharp playmaking qualities and "electrifying" pace and dribbling, as was said by journalist Antonio Mango.

While Guardiola hopes to provide the 21-year-old with greater opportunities this term, it's unlikely that he will perform beyond a bit-part role in the all-conquering City machine, and so Bobb might be wise to take a leaf from Cole Palmer's book and emulate the now-illustrious Premier League superstar.

Why Bobb could be Cole Palmer 2.0

Palmer, 22, signed a £40m deal with Chelsea one year ago after graduating from City's youth academy and scoring in the Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup at the start of the 2023/24 season. Despite such success, it was clear that he would play second fiddle to the likes of Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva, and so he searched for pastures new.

It's hard to argue against his decision. The Blues might have struggled for the second successive season but Palmer was mesmerising in his attacking performances, scoring 25 goals and adding 15 assists for the west London club across 45 appearances.

Cole Palmer in-article graphic

It's a surprise to absolutely nobody that the praise has flowed like a river for one of the country's most exciting attacking talents in a long time, with Chelsea captain Reece James even claiming that he is already "one of the best in the world", only one year into his career as a fully-fledged Premier League phenom.

In the Premier League, Palmer ranked among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the 2023/24 edition for goals scored, the top 10% for assists, the top 8% for shot-creating actions, the top 15% for passes attempted and the top 3% for progressive passes per 90.

Already, similarities can be drawn between the £75k-per-week talent and his erstwhile City teammate, Bobb. Chelsea's man has been breathtaking, so clinical, so awe-inspiring, but he was confined to a peripheral role throughout the early stage of his professional career in Greater Manchester.

Bobb can play that role, especially when considering the technical aptitude that has been on display throughout the maiden stage of his Premier League career already, completing 88% of his passes, winning 56% of his duels and succeeding with 65% of his dribbles per game, as per Sofascore.

Of course, the Norwegian ace might seek to take inspiration from Phil Foden and continue to ply his trade at the club that nurtured him through the academy, fostered his sparkling talent. Foden was anointed as the Premier League's Player of the Season last year after scoring 19 goals and supplying eight assists en route to his sixth title.

But with such a rich crop of players under Guardiola's wing, Bobb would surely be better off opting for the shrewd route of moving away, especially since Newcastle would offer the platform to grow into his skin quickly and even become one of the central figures at the club, linking up with Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon in a formidable prospective frontline.

In Palmer's care, the leash was taken off. Premier League outfits across the country watched in envy as a star was born, and you wouldn't bet against Bobb having not thought of emulating the England international with a move of his own.

Having already been capped by Norway, Bobb is looking to announce himself as one of the Premier League's most exciting youngsters after impressing intermittently last year. Newcastle yield a talented offensive crop but St. James' Park could truly be the perfect stomping ground to create Palmer 2.0 – and this time, on Tyneside.

As bad as Meslier: Farke could instantly drop 4/10 Leeds star after Pompey

Leeds United supporters must have anticipated that the opening day fixture versus Portsmouth in the Championship was going to be a stroll in the park after Pascal Struijk tucked away an early penalty at Elland Road.

Instead, as is often the case with the Whites, things became suddenly tense and difficult out of nowhere, as Pompey raced into a 2-1 lead before the half-time break, courtesy of a Callum Lang long-range bullet.

In the end, it fell to Brenden Aaronson to be the hero of the day in West Yorkshire to clinch a last-gasp point, so Daniel Farke's men didn't feel humiliated by their newly promoted opponents, with John Mousinho's men somewhat fortunate to collect a share of the points in the barnstorming 3-3 contest.

Pompey only had four shots on target all game, compared to Leeds' superior ten, as Whites shot-stopper Ilian Meslier had an afternoon to forget.

Meslier's game vs Portsmouth in numbers

Meslier has long divided opinion amongst the hardened Elland Road masses, and the Frenchman will continue to be a divisive figure if he regularly puts in performances like the one served up against Portsmouth.

The towering 24-year-old only made one save all afternoon, as Pompey grew in confidence that they could catch the former Lorient 'keeper out from wherever they attempted a shot from.

That was seen in Lang's first of the exhilarating 3-3 draw somehow squirming in from distance after Meslier couldn't deal with a straightforward Elias Sørensen opener that was hit straight at him for the South Coast outfit to equalise.

The 6 foot 6 presence also looked uncomfortable at points with his distribution from the back, not helped by Joe Rodon in front of him also having an off-day with some wayward passing, with just two accurate long balls managed all afternoon, as Leeds had to make do with an unsatisfactory share of the points to start the new second tier season.

However, away from Rodon and Meslier not covering themselves in glory defensively, there was an even more underwhelming performer at the back in the form of Jayden Bogle, who struggled back in the thick of it in the Championship, after a promising set of pre-season performances.

Bogle's game vs Portsmouth in numbers

Bogle will just hope he's getting his dodgy displays out of his system early on this campaign, as the former Sheffield United man struggled to competently complete his defensive duties all match.

The brand-new Whites number two did shine going forward in patches, with two big chances created all of his own working, but the ex-Blades right-back gave away the penalty that nearly allowed Portsmouth to win 3-2, before Aaronson's last-gasp heroics.

Bogle failed to impose himself into the contest as a strong and brave full-back, with only nine duels won from 19 attempted, alongside many lax passes going astray, with possession surrendered 15 times to allow Mousinho's outfit regular ways back into the exciting contest.

Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth dished out a low 4/10 rating to Bogle consequently, stating that he was 'bizarrely' positioned for Portsmouth's first strike amongst other faults in his game.

It will be interesting to see if Farke persists with his new capture here, when the Whites open their EFL Cup campaign versus Middlesbrough this mid-week, or if he chooses to start the likes of Sam Byram or other reserve defenders in his place after the 24-year-old really struggled back in competitive action. Perhaps Byram is the way to go mid-week.

There'll be many twists and turns to come this up-and-down Championship season, but Leeds fans will be worried that a slow start out of the blocks could be costly early on, on the way to promotion attempting to be sealed.

Bid made: West Ham and Lopetegui make £25m offer to sign 26 y/o attacker

West Ham United have reportedly now made an offer worth up to £25m to sign another striker.

West Ham sign Niclas Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund

The Hammers’ busy transfer window is showing no signs of slowing up, with Niclas Fullkrug joining Crysencio Summerville through the London Stadium door. The attacking duo have arrived from Borussia Dortmund and Leeds United respectively, becoming the club’s fourth and fifth signings after Luis Guilherme, Wes Foderingham and Max Kilman earlier in the summer.

Speaking after putting pen to paper with the Irons, Fullkrug said: “I’m delighted to be here, and I can’t wait to get out on the pitch with my new teammates. I think the Premier League is the best league in the world, and for me it is the right time to move over to England and play for a big Club like West Ham.

“I have been thinking about West Ham for a long time now – I know the Technical Director Tim Steidten very well, because we have history at Werder Bremen together, and I have watched some games and seen how much quality there is in the team.

“The chance to play under the Head Coach [Lopetegui] is also really exciting. His playing style is important for me, and I am confident that under him I will be able to perform at my best, and score lots of goals.”

Steidten was also excited to have brought in Fullkrug, adding: “We are delighted to have signed Niclas. I have worked with him previously and I know what he will bring to us in terms of his physical and finishing qualities, as well as his character and mentality.

“He has enjoyed a really positive last couple of seasons, both at club level, where he played in the Champions League final last season, and with Germany at the Euros this summer, and he joins us with a clear desire to build upon that progress and prove himself in the Premier League.”

However, it looks as if Fullkrug isn’t the only striker wanted by new manager Julen Lopetegui, following a recent update.

West Ham make £25m bid for Tammy Abraham

According to reports in Italy, relayed by Sport Witness, West Ham’s offer to sign AS Roma forward Tammy Abraham is worth up to £25m.

It is stated that Lopetegui’s side have made an attempt to sign Abraham and it appears the offer is actually more than the £21.4m asking price, however, the Englishman doesn’t seem to be keen on a return to the Premier League.

Tammy Abraham

AC Milan are also credited with an interest in the ex-Chelsea striker, who would rather move to the San Siro than the London Stadium.

With Fullkrug now through the door, though, West Ham may even drop their interest in Abraham altogether. However, it appears as if their £25m bid would be enough for Roma to sell, and with Lopetegui having just Danny Ings and Michail Antonio to rival Fullkrug, it could potentially still be one to keep an eye on.

Another intriguing weekend of Premier League action saw Liverpool extend their lead over defending champions Manchester City to eight points. The Reds saw off struggling Southampton at St Mary's to maintain their impressive start to the season, while Manchester City crashed to a fifth-straight defeat in all competitions to Tottenham.

Liverpool's healthy lead after 12 games ensures Arne Slot's team are now red-hot favourites to claim the Premier League title. However, Aguero says there is still a long way to go in the title race and is backing Pep Guardiola's side to produce another stunning comeback, like the one he played a central role in in 2012 as City claimed the title on the final day having chased down Manchester United.

WHAT AGUERO SAID

Aguero told : “Pundits are always quick to call the race and my response is always the same: it ain't over until it's over. The current point advantage may be insignificant by the end of the season. We've seen that happen frequently. The 2011-12 season had us eight points below United and we took that trophy. Of course, beating Liverpool will certainly help, but it's not wise to make such sweeping statements when the tournament still has a long way to go.”

England extends tours of West Indies in 2022

England will extend its tours of West Indies in 2022, adding an extra Test and two more T20Is to their schedule. The tour next January will now feature five T20Is – increased from three matches – to be followed by England returning to the Caribbean for three Test matches in March – increased from the original two games. The possibility of extending the tour, expected to be worth nearly US$100m to the region, was reported by ESPNcricinfo last week, with CWI President Ricky Skerritt saying it would be an acknowledgement of West Indies’ agreement to travel to England last year. That trip, consisting of three Tests behind closed doors in Southampton and Manchester, helped the ECB stage a complete international season in the middle of the pandemic and avoid an estimated £380 million budget black hole, but Skerritt said it had not earned the tourists anything financially.

Schedule

  • January 28: 1st T20I

  • January 30: 2nd T20I

  • February 2: 3rd T20I

  • February 4: 4th T20I

  • February 5: 5th T20I

  • March 1-4: warm-up game

  • March 8: 1st Test

  • March 16: 2nd Test

  • March 24: 3rd Test

Each Test match of the West Indies tour is estimated to be worth US$20-$25 million to the hosts and each T20I US$4 million.”This expansion of next year’s England tour to the Caribbean is welcome news for West Indies Cricket and for the region’s tourism economy,” Skerritt said when the tour extension was confirmed on Wednesday. “It has come about because of the special relationship that has been developed between our respective boards.”We have already begun discussions on how the ECB can help us in our development programs and I am pleased that ECB has been showing so much appetite and goodwill to assist.”Ian Watmore, the ECB Chair, said: “We hugely appreciated the support of Cricket West Indies, and all its men’s and women’s players, in helping us host a full season of international cricket in the summer of 2020. Following the conclusion of those tours to England we have been in discussions with CWI to understand how we can best support them moving forward and one way was to extend our existing England men’s tours to the Caribbean in 2022.”The three Tests will form part of the next ICC World Test Championship, while the additional T20Is will make it the biggest series between the sides in the shortest format, providing extra preparation ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia the following October. The Test series will be the first in which England and West Indies compete for the newly commissioned Richards-Botham Trophy, named in honour of West Indies’ batting icon Sir Vivian Richards and England’s great allrounder Lord Ian Botham. The venues for the matches are expected to be announced by the end of April.

– O time oscila porque são muitos jogos seguidos.
