Ange can combat injury woes by unleashing Spurs "freak" in a new role

After an impressive start to the 2023/24 season for Tottenham Hotspur, their form has been patchy at best of late.

During the first ten games of the season, the Lilywhites had 26 points, which included eight wins and two draws. Former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou set the record for the most points accumulated by a new manager in their first ten Premier League games, as per Opta Joe.

However, since then, Spurs have played 24 games, winning ten, losing ten and drawing four. They have earned 34 points in that time, and have a goal difference of zero. It is fair to say that they have been hit-and-miss.

With that being said, Postecoglou’s side currently sit fifth in the Premier League table, on 60 points. However, they are seven points behind Aston Villa in fourth, although they do have a game in hand.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou

This season, Spurs have had a couple of injuries to crucial players at important times. James Maddison picked up an ankle injury in November to halt his fast start to the campaign, and Mickey van de Ven has had two separate hamstring injuries, causing him to miss a total of 12 games.

Recently, first-choice left-back Destiny Udogie has fallen foul of injury and will miss the rest of the season, and Euro 2024. The Italian has played 29 games in the Premier League this term, scoring two goals and registering three assists.

According to Fbref, also Udogie averages 5.83 progressive passes per 90, placing him in the top 10% of Premier League full-backs, and 4.33 final third passes, ranking him in the top 18%.

The 21-year-old is also a wonderful ball-carrier, averaging 3.12 progressive carries per 90 minutes, which places him in the top 12%, and 2.45 carries into the final third, which places him in the top 5%. He is a key component of Spurs’ ball progression.

Tottenham star Destiny Udogie.

Off the ball, Udogie is also an astute defender and averages 6.36 ball recoveries per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 9% of Premier League full-backs. 3.95 tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes, which places him in the top 16%.

With Udogie’s injury a real blow to Spurs, there are a few options Postecoglou could turn to as a replacement. Ben Davies struggled in the North London Derby two weeks ago and did not play against Chelsea on Thursday. However, the Spurs boss has alternatives who could fill in at left-back whilst Udogie is sidelined, starting with this Sunday’s trip to Anfield to face Liverpool.

1

Obvious option

Emerson Royal

emerson-royal-tottenham-hotspur-crystal-palace-premier-league-outstanding-revive-mason

The obvious choice to start at left-back for Spurs is Emerson Royal. The versatile defender has played all across the backline this season, including six times at left-back, where he lined up against Chelsea just two days ago.

However, the Brazil international struggled at Stamford Bridge against the Blues. According to SofaScore, Emerson won just three of his ten duels, was dribbled past six times and lost possession on ten occasions.

Despite a tough showing, Emerson is still a good option for Postecoglou, as his Fbref stats reflect. The 25-year-old Brazil international averages 4.39 tackles and interceptions this season in the Premier League, which places him in the top 10%, and 6.46 ball recoveries per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 8%.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

With that being said, he lacks some of the progressive skills that Udogie possesses, and could well struggle to help Spurs progress play, especially when playing out from the back. Emerson averages just 4.23 progressive passes per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the 75th percentile.

He is certainly a good option for Postecoglou, especially if he wants a more defensive-minded player coming up against Liverpool and Mohamed Salah.

2

Tactical tweak

Micky van de Ven

Micky van de Ven celebrates for Tottenham

An alternative option that Postecoglou has at left-back is to play Dutch defender Micky van de Ven out there, thus bringing Radu Dragusin into the side at centre-back. Whilst this may seem like an odd option, Van de Ven has actually played there before.

The 23-year-old has featured 15 times at left-back during his career, although never for Spurs, which could be a stumbling block. In fact, it has been almost one year since he has slotted in at left-back, playing 90 minutes there for Wolfsburg against Hertha Berlin last season.

Regardless, Van de Ven is still a good progressor of play, and, as per Fbref, averages 4.14 progressive passes per 90 minutes, and 4.78 final third passes per 90 minutes. This places him in the top 24% and the top 20% respectively.

Not only that, Van de Ven’s pace will surely stand him in good stead for a spell at left-back. Should he decide to venture forward, he is lightning-quick, which led football podcast host Michael Caley to describe him as an “utter freak”.

Van de Ven certainly possesses the recovery pace to get back in time. The defender averages 5.82 ball recoveries per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 14% of Premier League centre-backs this season.

Starting Van de Ven at left-back is certainly a good option for Postecoglou. Whilst he may not have a wealth of experience in that role, the 23-year-old is quality on the ball, and a great defender, meaning he should be able to handle Salah well.

3

Wildcard option

Jahziah Linton

The outside shout Postecoglou has at his disposal is Spurs academy defender Jahziah Linton. The 19-year-old has made seven appearances in Premier League 2 this season, although he is yet to register a goal involvement.

The youngster signed his first professional deal last season, where he spent the majority of the time in the under-18s, but has since spent his first full year as a professional footballer in the under-21 side.

It would, of course, be a risk to throw Linton into the side against Liverpool and Salah for his professional debut. However, some youngsters thrive in those scenarios, and there is nothing to say Linton would not take to the situation like a duck to water.

Regardless, Postecoglou certainly has some big decisions ahead of Sunday afternoon’s game at Anfield. It is a massive game for Spurs in their chase for the top four, and defeat could all but confirm their place in the Europa League next season.

  • German coach turned down Red Devils' approach
  • Club told he would be 'solution' to Ten Hag issues
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

United held talks with ex-Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss Tuchel over the summer as they considered sacking Ten Hag after a dismal season in which the Red Devils finished eighth in the Premier League, though they managed to win the FA Cup.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Tuchel, however, turned them down and the Old Trafford club opted to hand Ten Hag a contract extension. The coach once again finds himself under pressure, though, amid his team's rough start to the season, and ex-Arsenal and Chelsea defender William Gallas has suggested the club leaders have another go at convincing Tuchel to come in.

  • WHAT GALLAS SAID

"Thomas Tuchel could be the solution to Manchester United’s problems. If he came into the club and was given time, given two years to create his team, the club would be in a completely different position to the one it is in now," Gallas said to . "At Chelsea Tuchel was very organised, the players respected him and he won the Champions League as well as a couple of other trophies, you can see why he was a success and maybe he wasn't given enough time to Chelsea to turn things around."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD?

After losing to Brighton and then Liverpool, United have just three points from their opening three Premier League games of the 2024-25 season. Ten Hag will hope to relieve some of the pressure he faces by guiding them to a win against Southampton, who have zero points, on September 14.

Crystal Palace could sign "special" Olise & Eze parner for £21m

Crystal Palace ended the Premier League season like a house on fire this year, and while plenty of fans probably welcomed the conclusion of the long and tiring campaign, the Selhurst Park faithful must be eager to see their side play again.

New boss Oliver Glasner has completely rejuvenated a team that looked stagnant under Roy Hodgson and turned them into one of the most exciting sides in the country, one capable of smashing Manchester United 4-0 and Aston Villa 5-0 at home.

Crystal Palace star Michael Olise.

The Austrian deserves plenty of credit, but he has been helped by having some genuinely excellent players in his team, like Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise, and based on recent reports, the club could soon sign him another exciting attacking talent.

Crystal Palace transfer news

According to a recent report from Spain, Crystal Palace are among several clubs interested in Arsenal's talented academy product Emile Smith Rowe.

Emile Smith Rowe playing for Arsenal

The story has revealed that, alongside the Eagles, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Everton and Aston Villa are also keen on the Englishman and that he could be available for as little as €25m, which converts to about £21m.

It might prove challenging to compete with Villa for the midfielder's signature, but given Palace's location near his place of birth, Croydon, ability to offer more playing time and an excellent manager, there is every chance they could come out on top.

Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe.

If Steve Parish and Co can get this deal over the line, then they should, as handing Glasner a player as talented as Smith Rowe for his first transfer at the club would show a sign of intent that can only help bring the club forward.

How Smith Rowe would fit into the Palace team

Now, with the way Glasner has his side playing and the talented players he already has at his disposal, some might question where Smith Rowe would fit into Palace, but there lies one of the 23-year-old's biggest strengths: his versatility.

In his 115 appearances for the Arsenal first team, the Hale End graduate has started as an attacking midfielder, left-sided midfielder, central midfielder, right-sided midfielder, left-winger and even a centre-forward.

So, if the Eagles maintain their 3-4-2-1 formation going into next season, the Croydon-born ace could comfortably step into the middle of the park alongside Adam Wharton to allow Eze and Olise to keep their place as the two central attacking midfielders.

However, if the manager opts to use a more traditional formation incorporating wingers, the Arsenal star could start wide or in attacking midfield, depending on where his teammates are starting.

Moreover, while the "special talent", as described by Jamie Carragher, has struggled for game time in North London over the last couple of years, his output and form when given a real run of games was seriously impressive.

Ultimately, while his name might not conjure the same level of excitement that it did a few years ago, Smith Rowe is still a relatively young and tremendously talented player who, alongside Olise and Eze – the contributors of 33 goals and assists this season – could help Glasner's Palace reach another level next season.

Everton eyeing instant Onana replacement with £102m release clause

Everton have been heavily restricted as to what they can spend in recent transfer windows, following their recent financial situation which resulted in an eight-point deduction last season.

Sean Dyche’s side have desperately lacked investment, with the club needing to act in a sensible manner this window if they are to pull further clear of any looming relegation worries.

He brought in Udinese striker Beto for £30m last summer, but the 26-year-old only managed to score three times in the Premier League in a disappointing campaign for the Portuguese frontman.

It was certainly a bold move from the club to splash that amount of money on a new talisman given their PSR troubles and it appears to be a move that has backfired, with Beto failing to make the impact he would’ve envisaged.

However, despite his failings at Goodison Park, Dyche and Co are looking to recruit another Portuguese talent on Merseyside, with the club looking to splash some of the cash they may potentially raise during the window.

Everton set to reignite interest in January target

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the Toffees are still interested in Benfica midfielder Florentino Luis, despite having a €30m (£25.5m) bid rejected for the 24-year-old in January.

The Benfica academy graduate, who has a €120m (£102m) release clause in his current contract, wouldn’t require a big anywhere near that figure for the Portuguese club to part ways with their talent.

florentino-luis-nottingham-forest-transfer-news-premier-league

Jacobs also goes on to state that despite the uncertainty around the club’s ownership, the Toffees will reignite interest in Luis ahead of the summer window in an attempt to bolster their midfield.

He’s featured 30 times in Liga Portugal during 2022/23, with only 17 of those appearances coming from the starting lineup, featuring for a total of 1,683 minutes under boss Roger Schmidt.

Whilst it may seem surprising that the club are willing to spend big given their financial woes, they may be able to reinvest with Amadou Onana rumoured to be available to leave the club for £60m this summer.

Why Florentino Luis would be the perfect Onana replacement

Whilst many fans would be devastated to see Onana depart Goodison Park this summer, they simply can’t turn down a bid over £50m – a figure that would see the club make at least a £17m profit in just two years.

However, should the 21-year-old depart the club Merseyside, Luis would be the ideal replacement for Onana, with his stats proving how much of an upgrade he would be for Dyche’s side.

It’s very evident that the Portuguese talent is more confident than the Belgian, who has largely been seen as a ball-winning player for Dyche’s side.

He averages 74 passes per 90, with 89% of the passes he’s attempted this campaign finding a teammate, 7.6 of which are progressive, with Luis eager to play the ball forward.

Unfortunately, Onana can't get anywhere those tallies this season, with his figure of 45 passes and 4.6 progressive passes respectively, considerably short of the 24-year-old Benfica sensation.

Despite his tackling ability, the Everton midfielder has been outclassed by the “superb” ace, as described by Jacek Kulig, with Florentino producing some simply sensational numbers this campaign, having been hailed as "the kind of player every coach would like to have in their squad" by former Benfica coach Joao Tralhao.

He averages one more tackle than the Toffees’ star midfielder, whilst also making nearly three times more interceptions per 90, albeit in a lower-quality division

Onana has been excellent during his time on Merseyside, but with his rumoured departure and Luis’ ability with and without the ball, Dyche and the board simply must focus on a deal for the Benfica talent, with the ace having the ability to transform the club’s midfield.

Mohammad Hafeez self-isolating after biosecurity protocol breach

Hafeez tweeted a photo of him interacting with a member of the public

Matt Roller12-Aug-2020Mohammad Hafeez, the Pakistan allrounder, has been told to self-isolate after breaching biosecurity protocols by posing for a photo with a member of the public.Hafeez posted the photo, taken on the golf course adjacent to the on-site hotel at the Ageas Bowl, on Twitter on Wednesday morning, saying: “Met an inspirational young lady today morning [sic] at golf course. She is 90+ & living her life healthy & happily. Good healthy routine.”While players have been permitted to use the golf course at the Ageas Bowl, they have been advised to avoid interaction with anyone outside the biosecure bubble, since the course is still open to the public. The ECB’s medical team were made aware of the photo, and a PCB statement confirmed that Hafeez had been instructed to isolate “for his [safety] and the safety and security of everyone around him”.ALSO READ: Cox dropped by Kent for Covid-19 protocol breachHafeez underwent a Covid-19 test on Wednesday afternoon, and the PCB said that he would be free to join back up with the rest of the touring party “at some stage” on Thursday provided his test result is negative. Anil Kumble on exit as India coach: 'The end could've been better'

Former India captain excited to be part of another dressing room at Kings XI Punjab

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Jul-2020

Anil Kumble, the former India captain, doesn’t regret walking away as the team’s head coach in 2017, but feels “the end could have been better”. He stepped down immediately after the Champions Trophy in June, where India finished runners-up to Pakistan, after his partnership with captain Virat Kohli became “untenable.”Ahead of that tournament, reports of Kohli telling BCCI about players being uncomfortable with Kumble’s “overbearing” ways surfaced. “The one year I spent with the Indian team (2016 to 2017) was fantastic,” Kumble said in an Instagram Live with former Zimbabwe medium-pacer Mpumelelo Mbangwa. “We did really well in that one-year period.”During his term from June 2016 to 2017, India rose to become the No. 1-ranked Test team, beating West Indies (away), Bangladesh, New Zealand, England and Australia (all at home). In all, India won 12 and lost just one Test during his 17-match run as India coach.”I was really happy that there were some contributions made and there are no regrets. I was happy moving on from there as well. I know the end could have been better but then that’s fine. As a coach, you realise when it’s time to move on; it’s the coach who needs to move on. I was really happy I played a significant role in that one year.”Kumble currently chairs the ICC Cricket Committee, with still a year to go in his nine-year term. On the coaching front, he will be involved with Kings XI Punjab as director of cricket operations.”Kings XI Punjab haven’t been consistent in 12 seasons of the IPL, and it’s a challenge,” Kumble said. “I’m looking forward to being part of a dressing room again. I’m also towards the end of my term in the ICC Cricket Committee. It’s wonderful being part of the ICC, to keep yourself abreast of what is happening and to contribute in your own way is very special.”

Poch must part ways with Chelsea man who’s played less than Nkunku

Chelsea's 2023/24 season came to an end on Sunday as they beat Bournemouth 2-1 at Stamford Bridge to finish sixth in the Premier League table.

The Blues achieved a sixth-placed finish and are now set to host European football next term, having gone through the current campaign without any Champions League, Europa League, or Europa Conference League games.

Mauricio Pochettino will now have a number of decisions to make during the upcoming summer transfer window as he shapes the squad for the new season.

One player who must be ruthlessly ditched from the squad by the Argentine head coach is central midfielder Cesare Casadei, who should be shipped out on loan or sold permanently if a good enough offer comes in.

Cesare Casadei's time with Leicester in numbers

The Italy U21 international spent the first half of the campaign on loan with Leicester City in the Championship but failed to nail down a place as a regular starter in Enzo Maresca's side.

Despite the Foxes' dominance in the second tier, as they went on to win the division, the Chelsea youngster could not showcase much in the way of attacking quality when on the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, Casadei underperformed in front of goal with the quality of chances that were created for him and failed to provide a single assist for his teammates in 22 matches, only eight of which came as a starter.

He also made just 1.2 tackles and interceptions combined per game and lost 51% of his duels, which shows that the youngster did not make up for his lack of attacking quality with strong defensive work.

Why Chelsea should move Cesare Casadei on

Pochettino opted to bring the Italian gem back to Stamford Bridge to be part of his first-team squad for the second half of the campaign but the 6 foot 1 talent did not do enough to suggest that he should be kept around next season.

Casadei, who was once hailed as "powerful" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, went on to play 11 times in the Premier League over the past five months, all of which came as a substitute.

Cesare Casadei

He played 99 minutes of top-flight action for the Blues and produced zero interceptions, zero goals, zero assists, and zero 'big chances' created in that time.

This meant that the 21-year-old midfielder ended the Premier League season with even fewer minutes than Christopher Nkunku (437), despite the French forward having missed a whopping 39 matches through various injury issues.

The former RB Leipzig star battled back through his fitness problems to score three goals in 11 league appearances for the Blues, whilst Casadei did not do enough with his time on the pitch.

His lack of starts and complete lack of impact on the pitch off the bench suggests that Chelsea must now brutally ditch the youngster this summer, whether that is on loan or permanently.

Chelsea star who won 11 duels simply has to become a regular next season

The Blues star put in a fantastic display on the final day vs Bournemouth to give Chelsea a great chance of qualifying for the Europa League.

ByDan Emery May 20, 2024

Casadei's lacklustre performances, both in the Championship for Leicester and in the Premier League for the Blues, show that he is unlikely to be a useful player for Pochettino next term, which is why he should be brutally parted ways with ahead of next season.

Report: Celtic scouts now analysing "charismatic" new midfield target

Celtic scouts are reportedly weighing up the possibility of signing a "charismatic" new transfer target who is thought to be perfect for Brendan Rodgers.

Celtic transfer news

The Hoops are in the driving seat in the Scottish Premiership title race currently, leading Rangers by three points at the top of the table, but new signings will be required this summer regardless of what happens in the remaining weeks of the season.

It is essential that Rodgers continues to grow his squad, not least because their rivals are posing more of a threat again these days, but also because added quality will be badly needed in any potential Champions League campaign.

One player who will be leaving Celtic this summer is veteran goalkeeper Joe Hart, who has decided to hang up his boots after a stellar career for club and country. Brondby stopper Patrick Pentz has been linked with a move to Parkhead as a replacement for the 37-year-old, with English and Dutch clubs also thought to be interested in him.

Pentz isn't the only 'keeper being looked at by the Hoops, with Liverpool ace Caoimhin Kelleher and Sunderland hero Anthony Patterson also emerging as options in the coming months.

In terms of other positions, rumoured Celtic target Callum O'Hare could leave Coventry City for free at the end of the campaign, having shone for the Championship side this season, scoring 10 goals in total.

Celtic scouts eyeing "charismatic" ace

According to a fresh report from Football Scotland, Celtic are interested in signing Cremonese midfielder Charles Pickel in the summer window, and have in fact "been offered" the chance to sign him.

The report states that "the Hoops are believed to have put the feelers out for a player in that position with the Cremonese man, 26, being put to them as someone who would fit the profile perfectly", adding that the recruitment team currently have him under consideration.

Pickel may be something of an unknown compared to some of the names mentioned above, but that's not to say that he couldn't be a strong signing for Celtic. At 26, the 12-time capped DR Congo midfielder is at an ideal age to come in and make an impression straight away, and having been described as "charismatic", would hopefully have no issue stepping up to the pressure of playing in Glasgow.

He switched his allegiance from Switzerland to Congo, having represented the former at Under-20, Under-19, Under-18 and Under-15 level, totalling 21 appearances across the four age groups, so he has plenty of international pedigree.

Additional midfield depth is something that Rodgers should be looking to bring in this summer and Pickel could be ideal, generally adopting a defence-minded role in front of the back-line, but still scoring three goals in 24 Serie A appearances this season.

The fact that Celtic's scouts seem confident that he is the ideal fit for them can also only bode well, and it is hopefully a piece of business that they get over the line, pipping others to his signature in the process.

Trinidad & Tobago PM warns against breach of protocols at CPL

Keith Rowley, prime minister of Trinidad & Tobago, believes hosting the CPL will not be a risk with regards to the spread of of Covid-19 as the tournament will be played in a biosecure environment. The entire tournament, from August 18 to September 10, is scheduled to take place in T&T across two stadiums and behind closed doors to ensure proper protection against the pandemic.”The CPL games are quite different, that’s a bubble,” Rowley said. “Everything that will go on around the CPL will go on in a bubble that does not interact with the local population.”They will come into the country under the protocols of entry, all having tested negative before. When they come here they are confined to the Hilton Hotel and that becomes a bubble for them. Then they will go to a venue to play the game where they will not interact with the population and so the CPL is a bubble that has nothing to do with what goes on in the country.”T&T has recorded a total of 169 cases and eight deaths until July 31st, and there are 29 current active cases, according to government data.As per the agreement between the CPL and the T&T government, all the participants – squads and team management of the six franchises, the organisers and the rest of the crews – will need to self-isolate for two weeks before they board their flights, and for two weeks upon arrival in T&T.All the overseas participants will be tested for Covid-19 before departure and then upon arrival followed by two more tests – seven days and 14 days after their arrival.Rowley also said that breaching of biosecurity protocols by players and staff will strictly not be tolerated. “Don’t play you can come out from that protocol and decide to take a drink down the road or whatever, we’re not tolerating that,” he said.”The same way we opened factories and keep them open, we opened the stores selling cloth…the CPL is just another business aspect in the country, in this case it’s cricket, it’s televised, the benefit we get from it is that we promote the country. We’ve established very strict protocols.”
