Liverpool star whose value’s dropped 80% has been even worse than Keita

Over time, Liverpool supporters have come to trust Jurgen Klopp's judgement in the transfer market, with the illustrious Premier League outfit often delving down a shrewder road than their rivals when improving the squad.

While staple members Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk were signed for lofty figures, deals for iconic Klopp stars such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson and Joel Matip – certainly not an exhaustive list – were welcomed for bargain sums in today's jaw-dropping landscape.

The remarkable accuracy in the transfer market has left certain rivals rueing their own lack of discernment and has been the foundation of the Reds' success under Klopp's wing.

Jurgen Klopp

But it hasn't always gone well and there are a few deals littered throughout the German's tenure that are best left in distant memory.

Indeed, three-and-a-half years ago Liverpool ventured to sign Thiago Alcantara, long considered one of Europe's superlative centre-midfielders, though the Spain international's time on Merseyside has been marred by an incredible series of injury problems.

Liverpool's signing of Thiago Alcantara

It was 2020 and Liverpool were preparing for the eventuality of Gini Wijnaldum's sale; the Dutchman has one year remaining on his current contract and renewal looked unlikely. A replacement was needed.

Wijnaldum would indeed move to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer one year later but FSG moved to sign Thiago from Bayern Munich and wrapped up a deal for a fee rising to £25m.

Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara

Long regarded as a "magnificent" footballer with "outstanding technique" – as was once said by Phillip Lahm – the La Masia youth graduate had won honours in abundance throughout a glittering career, notably gleaning the Champions League with both Bayern and Barcelona, and his acquisition looked a no-brainer for a heavy metal Liverpool side transitioning toward a style with a tad more control and composure.

The one little concern was an unflattering injury record, but then there was hope that that wouldn't present too large a quandary.

Thiago Alcantara's Liverpool career so far

Thiago has completed 98 appearances for Liverpool and played a big role as Klopp chased a quadruple in 2021/22 – unsuccessfully, sure, but not without triumph in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

andre-thiago-alcantara-liverpool-opinion

The £200k-per-week star enjoyed success that year and actually started 17 Premier League matches during that season, completing 89% of his passes and averaging 1.2 key passes, 1.9 tackles and 4.5 successful duels per fixture, as per Sofascore.

He was important last season but fell to injury in the new year and made his final Premier League start against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the beginning of February.

Yet to feature from the outset since Thiago made his anticipated return off the bench during Liverpool's recent defeat against title rivals Arsenal, but got fans groaning after bewildering news that he had suffered a hamstring issue.

These incessant problems have caused the player's transfer value to plummet, with Football Transfers recording Thiago's current value at just £4m, which marks an 80% decrease – such has been the enormity of his decline.

Once praised for his "staggering" talents by pundit and former Liverpool man Michael Owen, Thiago has enjoyed some fine moments but all too often has watched on in shadowed obscurity as his confreres fight for honours.

He's not been the most expensive addition during Klopp's reign and while he carries the patina of a wisened and cultured veteran, he has been unable to strut his stuff with the slightest bit of regularity, and it remains to be seen if Liverpool will get more than a sliver out of his services before the end of the campaign.

Worse than Naby Keita

They say that availability is the best ability, and while this is worn-out phrasing it certainly speaks a truth regarding Thiago's Liverpool career.

Endowed with such scintillating technical ability and tactical intelligence that allows him to control matches with remarkable ease, Thiago is comfortably one of the best players to perform under Klopp at Liverpool, when going off raw quality alone.

However, raw quality is only one of many important facets down a winding path toward success and the 32-year-old's startling inability to maintain fitness has ravaged any hopes of etching his name into Premier League lore for his feats on the pitch.

This is not the first time Reds supporters have been led to get excited by a high-profile addition to the midfield, with Naby Keita's £53m acquisition back in 2018 supposed to be a game-changing move during Liverpool's primitive face under Klopp, who dubbed the Guinean "the complete midfielder."

In a similar decline, Keita managed only stuttering glimpses of the quality that prompted Klopp to grant such an expensive outlay, scoring 11 goals and supplying seven assists across 129 fixtures in all competitions for the Anfield side but, given that he completed five campaigns in England, this averages out to a measly 26 appearances per term.

To put that in perspective, Mohamed Salah averaged 51 games per season during the same period.

Like Thiago, Keita is among Europe's most naturally talented midfielders and has even been hailed for his "world-class" attributes by Virgil van Dijk in the past, but given that the former has reaped lucrative rewards across both German and Spanish pitches, it's hard to feel more aggrieved by Keita's struggles.

Naby Keita.

The end date draws ever closer and it's very hard to imagine a world where Thiago, who turns 33 in two months exactly, pens new terms and has another shot at crafting a successful campaign for himself.

There's a wistful air surrounding these closing months of Thiago's Liverpool career and it will very much go down as a transfer that offered some lovely, influential moments but ultimately failed to deliver even a portion of the goods.

Klopp's sweeping changes to the midfield last summer have allayed any fears that Thiago's exit might be detrimental but it is a real shame nonetheless. He's one of the finest footballers around.

Sri Lanka to tour Pakistan for limited-overs series in September

Pakistan will host their longest bilateral series in a decade after Sri Lanka agreed to play three ODIs and three T20s in Karachi and Lahore. This will mark the first international action in the country for 18 months, though it has meant that the two Tests scheduled between the sides for October – and which the PCB wanted to be played in Pakistan – have been postponed to December. Where they will be played is not yet clear, though it appears as if this tour could be a trial run for bringing long-form cricket back to Pakistan.

Sri Lanka tour of Pakistan

27 Sep – 1st ODI, Karachi
29 Sep – 2nd ODI, Karachi
2 Oct – 3rd ODI, Karachi
5 Oct – 1st T20I, Lahore
7 Oct – 2nd T20I, Lahore
9 Oct – 3rd T20I, Lahore

The National Stadium in Karachi will host the three ODIs, while the T20Is will be staged in Lahore. The ODIs will be the first to take place in Pakistan since Zimbabwe toured for a three-match ODI series in 2015; all the international cricket since the 2017 PSL final has been in the form of T20Is.ESPNcricinfo understands discussions on the matter of where the Tests will be played are continuing. The PCB had originally wanted the Test series to be played in Pakistan in October, but the Sri Lankan sports minister has said that players were reluctant for that to happen. The decision to swap formats, according to a PCB press release, was made following a phone discussion between the Pakistan Chairman Ehsan Mani and SLC President Shammi Silva on Friday. The visitors will arrive in Karachi on September 25 and fly home on October 10.Earlier this month, Sri Lanka carried out their security assessment in Lahore and Karachi – the two possible venues for any international cricket in the series – and it threw up “very positive” results. Ultimately, it does not seem to have been positive enough to remove player apprehensions about playing Test cricket in Pakistan. But the limited-overs leg gives Pakistan an opportunity to convince players otherwise and should it go off without a hitch, enable the PCB to make a more convincing case for the Test series to be played in the country, too.ALSO READ: Sri Lanka mull playing Test cricket in PakistanAccording to Sri Lanka sports minister Harin Fernando, the board had conveyed to him that it would prefer “not to take the risk” of playing a Test in Pakistan. He believed “some players were quite apprehensive,” and that Sri Lanka would play only one of the two limited-overs series in Pakistan, and that the Tests would “definitely” be held in the UAE. As it turns out, Sri Lanka will play the entire limited-overs leg in Pakistan, staying in the country for 13 days, with the PCB not yet ruling out the possibility of an actual home Test series.A Sri Lanka team played one T20I in Lahore in October 2017, but did so without a number of its prominent names. Sri Lanka’s then T20I captain, Upul Tharanga, pulled out, along with Lasith Malinga, Niroshan Dickwella, Suranga Lakmal and Akila Dananjaya. But the game went off without incident.A gigantic Pakistani flag engulfs one of the stands•AFP

For all the promising developments in terms of increasing international cricket in Pakistan over the past two years or so, convincing a team to play a Test match in the country has proved difficult. In part, the increased time commitment that a Test match will invariably demand has proven a challenging hurdle to overcome. And with the World Test Championship now having begun, it is unlikely teams would even be willing to send over weakened squads for a one-off Tests, with each game carrying significant points that count towards the eventual standings.”The PCB is pleased with the outcome of its discussions with Sri Lanka Cricket, which has supported Pakistan in its efforts and endeavours for the complete revival of international cricket,” Mani said. “The tour for limited-overs matches will also provide Sri Lanka with an even better understanding of the ground situation before discussing the schedule of the Tests.”The hosting of the ICC World XI, a T20I against Sri Lanka, three-T20I series men’s and women’s series against the West Indies and eight HBL PSL 2019 matches within the past couple of years is a testament to Pakistan’s claim that it is a safe and secure country to play cricket.”We are very grateful to Sri Lanka Cricket President Mr Shammi Silva, his board and players for responding positively to our request to play matches in Pakistan.”Silva said: “The PCB and SLC have a long history of cricket relationship and friendship, and this decision only strengthens that bonding. The SLC is committed to playing its role in the promotion of cricket and looks forward to visiting Karachi and Lahore for three ODIs and three T20Is.”The SLC security experts had visited the two cities earlier this month and had given a positive report, which made our job of decision-making easy. The safety and security of its players is the responsibility of the SLC, which it takes very seriously. If there had been any doubts, the SLC would not have gone ahead with this arrangement that we envisage will improve the players’ confidence and trust level and will also be critical when we start discussions on the schedule of the Test matches.”On 21 April 2019, Easter Sunday, there were several bomb attacks in churches and hotels all across Sri Lanka, with over 250 people killed and more than 500 injured. Sri Lanka Cricket was particularly apprehensive about what it meant for visiting teams in the future. But just over a month after the attack, Pakistan’s U-19 team visited Sri Lanka for five 50-over matches, a move that created much goodwill between the two boards, and gives Pakistan a slightly better chance of convincing Sri Lanka to play as much as possible of their tour in the country.*

Sunderland man who earns double Hume’s wages could be given the boot

Sunderland couldn't start Mike Dodds' reign back as interim boss with a bang against Swansea City last weekend, as the Black Cats ended up losing 2-1 to Luke Williams' Swans at the Stadium of Light.

A number of key first-teamers let the Wearside outfit down in the narrow defeat, with the likes of reliable central midfield presence Dan Neil only winning one duel all afternoon in a passive display.

Yet, Sunderland's troubles aren't just restricted to the XI fielded by Dodds on the football pitch with this high earner currently bleeding the Black Cats dry waiting in the wings.

Earning more than double Trai Hume's wage, this fringe figure at Sunderland could soon be actively pushed out of the building to free up more wage space.

Timothee Pembele's wage at Sunderland

Timothee Pembele finds himself on a handsome £7.5k per week pay packet with Sunderland, despite barely making an impression on the senior ranks since joining last year from Paris St. Germain.

The 21-year-old starlet has made just five first-team appearances for the Black Cats since leaving Paris behind, which has seen Pembele make more waves at U21 level for the Championship side – picking up two assists in the Premier League 2 when drafted in to play there.

Still, when you scan your eye over the other earners in the Sunderland camp, it's fair to say Pembele's wage is rather inflated.

PSG defender Timothee Pembele.

The Black Cats number six's last taste of senior football was on Valentine's Day versus Huddersfield Town, winning only one of his four ground duels on the day as Sunderland succumbed to a disappointing 1-0 defeat away at the Terriers.

This lacklustre cameo from off the bench has seen his limited game-time dry up even more, with Dodds now faced with a conundrum over whether to give Pembele more minutes in the first-team fold or leave him to play for the U21s.

More time to adjust to the senior set-up and shine could somewhat justify Pembele's extortionate wage, but with Trai Hume's spot fixed at right-back again owing to Leo Hjelde joining in January, it could well be hard for the ex-PSG full-back to ever fully break through.

Pembele's wage compared to the Sunderland squad

Amazingly, even though Hume is yet to miss a game this season for Sunderland in the league, the Northern Irish star comes in on a lower wage than Pembele according to Capology.

Trai Hume

Hume earns a meagre £3k compared to the Frenchman's more than double £7.5k per week salary, despite being a dependable figure all campaign long for Sunderland even when times have been tough.

The 21-year-old even shone in a recent 2-1 defeat to Birmingham City that saw Michael Beale lose his job in the aftermath, completing eight tackles and eight ground duels to try and add grit to his side's game at St Andrew's.

Pembele also comes in on a heftier pay packet than the likes of Jobe Bellingham and Pierre Ekwah who regularly star in midfield for the Black Cats – the midfield duo coming in at a combined 65 first-team appearances this season but earn £6.5k per week and £3k per week respectively.

The obvious pedigree attached to the 21-year-old's signature – joining from Ligue 1 giants PSG – clearly has resulted in his wage being far higher than it needed to be.

It could well be premature to completely write off the Frenchman's future at the second-tier club, but with various key first-team presences earning less than the reserve figure, it might well be smart to offload Pembele soon to not have such a high earner just stuck on the fringes.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore 94* sets up Yorkshire to finish on a win

Birmingham fall short in run chase despite Sam Hain half-century

ECB Reporters Network30-Aug-2019Tom Kohler-Cadmore was among the runs again as an unbeaten 94 earned Yorkshire Vikings a 19-run T20 Vitality Blast victory over Birmingham Bears at Edgbaston.Opener Kohler-Cadmore made a half century in his previous game against Northamptonshire Steelbacks. And the Vikings captain kept that form going with nine fours and two sixes – ending six short of his century – as Yorkshire completed their T20 campaign with back-to-back wins after Birmingham replied with 181 for 5, including a 46-ball 64 from Sam Hain who hit five fours and two sixes. The match may have been a dead rubber with neither side able to qualify from the North Group, but Kohler-Cadmore and Adam Lyth punished Birmingham yet again with a new best T20 stand against the Bears following on from their 88 stand at Headingley this season. This time they piled on 102 runs to set up a total of 200 for 3.Birmingham won the toss but Yorkshire made a solid start and the opening 50 stand came inside six overs – off 32 balls – after some loose bowling from the Bears early on. Lyth brought up the half-century with a boundary as Vikings made the most of the Powerplay.Vikings were 92 for no wicket after 10 overs and Kohler-Cadmore reached his 50 after hitting seven fours and a six, with the pair completing a century stand a in the 12th over. But Bears made the breakthrough when Lyth tried to pull a George Garrett ball and was caught on the boundary by Dom Sibley on the deep midwicket boundary.Garrett, aged 19, earned his first wicket in T20 cricket as a result with the score on 102 – that follows his wicket on his first-class debut against Somerset this month. But Yorkshire were still in a strong position and David Willey kit the Vikings’ momentum going as he hit the first and third ball of his innings for six.Willey continued to take the game to Birmingham and drove Chris Green for a huge straight six. But Bears picked up a second wicket as Willey tried one big shot too many and hit Green’s full toss to long-off where he was caught by Will Rhodes after making a rapid 25 off 10 balls to leave Vikings 137 for 2.Harry Brook came in and provided more valuable support for Kohler-Cadmore and the pair hauled in 24 runs from the 17th over. Vikings reached 200 off the last ball of the innings leaving Kohler-Cadmore not out after carrying his bat.Bears made an encouraging start and Ed Pollock took the game to Yorkshire only to edge Tim Bresnan to wicket keeper Tattersall and depart for 22 hitting four boundaries and a six. But Green then went from his second delivery as Bresnan struck again in the same over with Will Fraine taking a fine catch as Bears were reduced to 35 for 2.And it was 56 for 3 when Matt Pillans bowled Lamb for 11 – but Vikings took command when Lyth trapped opener Dom Sibley for 37 with the Bears score on 100.

Boehly has been rinsed by Chelsea’s expensive flop for 81 weeks

Chelsea are having yet another below-par season and find themselves currently residing in mid-table in the Premier League.

The London-based club are a massive 14 points away from the top four despite spending over £1b over the last two seasons on transfer and loan fees alone.

This figure is astonishingly high and puts into perspective how badly they've played since the arrival of Todd Boehly at Stamford Bridge.

Out of the many additions made by Boehly in order to try to make his club one of Europe's powerhouses once again, the vast majority have failed to make an impact on the club since their arrival.

There is, however, one signing in particular which stands out above the rest for being woeful despite earning a bumper wage.

Marc Cucurella's form since joining Chelsea

Marc Cucurella joined Chelsea in August 2022 from Brighton and Hove Albion for a fee which was worth around £63m.

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella.

The move came off the back of his first in England's top flight, where he performed above and beyond what was expected of him.

For his one and only season as a Brighton player, the Spain international managed a total of 38 appearances and contributed to two goals.

Although the stats may not showcase how solid he was across the season, he showed enough to get Chelsea to spend enough to make him the second-most expensive left-back in world football.

Since arriving at Stamford Bridge, the one-time Barcelona full-back has appeared on 45 occasions but, he has only garnered a total of two assists during that time.

Ben Chiwell Chelsea

His regular role in Chelsea's starting XI is largely due to the sheer number of injuries and time on the sidelines that Ben Chilwell has been faced with.

The England international has spent a total of 83 games on the sidelines since the arrival of the 25-year-old, which has resulted in the Blues relying on Cucurella more often than not.

To make matters worse, during their Premier League clash against Everton on the 10 December, Cucurella was himself struck down by injury and forced off the pitch early.

Wage Burners

Football FanCast's Wage Burners series explores the salaries of the modern-day game.

His injury was so severe that he had to undergo surgery, which has kept him sidelined for the past couple of months.

As with all players who get injured, their salaries are still paid in full, which leaves clubs in a bit of a pickle. Hence, why now, the Spain international is bleeding the London-based club dry.

Marc Cucrella's total cost at Chelsea

After being at the club for around 81 weeks now, the salary Cucurella has received is eye-watering. Over the time he has spent at the club, the 5 foot 8 defender has gained around £12m in wages alone – raking in a staggering £175k-per-week, as per Capology.

It would appear that such an outlay – which comes to £75m in total when including his initial transfer fee – has not been justified, with talkSPORT pundit Jamie O'Hara even branding him a "disgrace" following Chelsea's Champions League tie against Real Madrid last season.

This judgement came after Chilwell was sent off after pulling on the shoulder of Rodrygo in the box. The only reason the England international decided to commit the foul in the first place was due to the poor positioning of Cucurella for the goal.

This isn't the first time a situation has occurred like this with Cucurella, and it likely won't be the last. So, not only have Chelsea spent a near-record-breaking fee on the left-back, but they have also made themselves £12m lighter for a player who seemingly isn't up to the standard they expect.

So, it is without doubt that the left-back has bled the club dry and looks set to be yet another Boehly signing who won't make the cut in the near future.

Geoffrey Boycott 'doesn't give a toss' about criticism of knighthood

Senior female MP calls for a review of honour in wake of domestic abuse conviction in 1998

Andrew Miller10-Sep-2019

The row over Geoffrey Boycott’s knighthood has escalated after Harriet Harman, the UK’s senior female MP, called for Theresa May to review her “baffling” decision to honour a man who was convicted in a French court in 1998 for assaulting his then-girlfriend, Margaret Moore.Boycott was knighted in May’s resignation honours list, alongside another former England opening batsman, Andrew Strauss, in spite of being fined £5,000 and handed a three-month suspended jail sentence in the wake of an incident at a French hotel in 1996.On the morning after the honour was made public, Boycott told ‘s Today programme that he “didn’t give a toss” about criticism from anti-domestic abuse campaigners, including Adina Claire, the co-acting chief executive of Women’s Aid, who described his honour as “extremely disappointing”.And now, Harman, the longest-serving female MP at Westminster, has weighed in on the row, suggesting that there ought to be a process to review an “incomprehensible” decision before “the Queen comes to lay her sword on the shoulder of Geoffrey Boycott”.Boycott, however, has always denied the charge, and in a testy exchange with the Today programme presenter, Martha Kearney, he added that his experience of the French judicial system had contributed to his outspoken support for Brexit.”I don’t give a toss about her [Claire], love,” Boycott, 78, told Kearney. “It was 25 years ago. You can take your political nature and do whatever you want with it. You want to talk to me about my knighthood, it’s very nice of you to have me, but I couldn’t give a toss.”Twenty-five years ago, love, in a French court, she tried to blackmail me for £1million. I said no, because in England if you pay any money at all, we think: ‘Hang on, there must be something there’. I said: ‘I’m not paying anything’ … I’m not sure I’d actually got a million at the time.”It’s a court case in France where you’re guilty, which is one of the reasons I [didn’t] vote to remain in Europe – because you’re guilty until you’re proved innocent. That’s totally the opposite from England and it’s very difficult to prove you’re innocent in another country and another language.”Most people in England don’t believe it. I didn’t do it. Move on. It’s a cross I have to bear, right or wrong, good or bad, I have to live with it. And I do, because I’m clear in my mind and I think most people in England are that it’s not true.”May, who stood down as prime minister in June, is a keen cricket fan and has often cited Boycott as her sporting hero – telling Test Match Special earlier this year she admired the way he “stuck at it, he had a plan and got on with it, and more often than not delivered”.Boycott’s honour for services to sport was one of two knighthoods for former cricketers in May’s resignation honours, alongside the double-Ashes-winning captain Strauss, whose three-year role as England director of cricket was integral in laying the groundwork for this year’s World Cup victory. However, the fact that May introduced a landmark domestic abuse bill to parliament earlier this year, which is still in the process of being ratified, left Harman perplexed.”She brought forward a domestic abuse bill, which is still in the process of going through Parliament, so I’m slightly baffled by why she’s done this,” Harman told . “I think she might have been ill-advised.”I hope there’s a process before the Queen comes to lay her sword on the shoulder of Geoffrey Boycott, in which the Prime Minister can actually review her decision, because she is committed to championing the cause of tackling domestic violence. It’s quite an incomprehensible decision, and I’m hoping there’s time to think again about it.”Boycott, however, insisted that he should be judged solely on the basis of his cricket career, in which he made 8114 runs in 108 Tests, before becoming one of the best-known voices on the Test Match Special commentary team. “This is just recognition of my cricket,” he said. “[It’s] very nice, very honoured, thankful to Theresa May and I thank all the people that supported me and cared for me throughout my cricketing career.”
