Tottenham Signing "Superb" £40m Ace Would Threaten Richarlison

Tottenham Hotspur's search to find a suitable successor to Harry Kane continues, with the latest reports indicating that the Lilywhites are plotting a move for Nottingham Forest speedster, Brennan Johnson.

How much would Brennan Johnson cost?

According to Football Insider, the north London outfit are currently 'keeping tabs' on the 22-year-old in their bid to land a possible replacement for Kane, with the latter man still looking set for a summer move to Bayern Munich.

As per the piece, Forest could be willing to sanction a sale if they are to receive a bid in excess of £40m, with both Aston Villa and Brentford – the latter of whom has already seen a £35m offer rejected – also in the race for his signature.

This follows similar claims made by the Daily Mail's Simon Jones earlier this week, with the transfer insider reporting that while those at the City Ground are looking for a figure close to £50m, Spurs are keen to find something of a 'middle ground'.

How would Brennan Johnson fit in at Tottenham?

As the Independent's Miguel Delaney previously wrote, Spurs are unlikely to try and acquire a direct replacement for Kane through the middle, with the desire instead 'to reshape the attack amid Ange Postecoglou’s fluid new style'.

Johnson, therefore, could represent the attacking figurehead of that new-look front line, with there a potential for the former Lincoln City loanee to be flanked by the likes of Heung-min Son and Dejan Kulusevski next season.

Tottenham striker Richarlison.

If the 19-cap international is to arrive through the door at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium it could then spell bad news for last year's summer signing, Richarlison, with the £60m addition potentially set to see his hopes of taking on the central striker role threatened.

The former Everton talisman endured a dismal debut season at N17 after scoring just a solitary Premier League goal, with Johnson, by contrast, scoring eight times to help Steve Cooper's men stave off relegation.

While the Brazilian did recently net a hat-trick against Lion City Sailors while on pre-season, it remains to be seen if the 26-year-old can replicate such heroics in the upcoming campaign, with talkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor previously criticising the mercurial talent for having no "standout attributes".

Having failed to fire in 2022/23, Richarlison was also rather limited in a creative sense after creating just a solitary big chance from his 27 league outings, while his Forest counterpart created four big chances from his 38 appearances for the Midlands side.

Described as a "superb talent" by scout Jacek Kulig, Johnson had previously illustrated his devastating brilliance after registering 26 goal involvements as part of his current side's successful promotion charge during the 2021/22 campaign,

While that stellar haul did come in the second tier, it is still beyond anything that the current Spurs man has achieved during his time in English football to date, with the £90k-per-week man having hit career-best figures of 16 goals and assists in the league during the 2019/20 season while at Goodison Park.

That could well suggest that if Postecoglou does reinvest any potential Kane funds in Johnson, it could be Richarlison that proves one of the notable victims of that transaction.

Pakistan spinners take four to set up exciting final day

For eleven sessions this Test went nowhere, the teams only three runs apart at the end of the first innings. But towards the end of day four, Pakistan’s spinners claimed four wickets, and shocked it into life

Andrew Fidel Fernando01-Oct-2017Stumps Yasir Shah pivots after delivering•Francois Nel/Getty ImagesFor eleven sessions this Test went nowhere, the teams only three runs apart at the end of the first innings, but towards the end of day four, Pakistan’s spinners claimed four wickets, and shocked it into life.Having been made to labour in the field for 162.3 overs, Sri Lanka’s now face a stern battle on Monday. They are 66 runs ahead, but have lost four of their top five, and have fielded only six specialist batsmen in this match. At the crease is Kusal Mendis, who survived a thorough examination from Yasir Shah to finish on 16 off 66. With him is nightwatchman Suranga Lakmal. Niroshan Dickwella and Dilruwan Perera – the last recognised batsman – are yet to come to the crease. That Sri Lanka have found themselves in this position, is largely Yasir’s work, but ongoing poor umpiring in this Test was the catalyst for the slide. Dimuth Karunaratne was given out bat-pad for 10 off Yasir, though replays showed neither his bat, nor glove, got close to the ball. He should have reviewed it, of course, but as his bat had hit the ground during the course of his stroke, he perhaps felt he had made contact. The next two wickets went to part-timers, though Yasir had built substantial pressure to help bring about those batting mistakes. Lahiru Thirimanne edged a regulation offbreak from Asad Shafiq behind for 7. Kaushal Silva then missed a sweep against a sharp-turning Haris Sohail delivery and was dismissed for 25. Both those batsmen’s places will come under pressure now – each having failed twice in the Test.Dinesh Chandimal arrived at the crease with his side in trouble, as had been the case in the first innings, and he sought to play the same way as he did in that first dig. Having made 7 off 29 balls with Mendis, who himself was in discomfort against Yasir, Chandimal failed to get forward to a beautifully flighted delivery from the legspinner, and sent an outside edge to slip. Sri Lanka had stumbled to 65 for 4 and given Pakistan a glimpse – distant though it is for now – at victory. In fact, that Pakistan ended the day in a position of strength was the result of a resurgence that had first begun with the bat. By lunch, they had lost five wickets for 74 runs, and were in danger of conceding a substantial lead – still 79 runs behind Sri Lanka’s 419, and with only two wickets left. But Hasan Ali came in swinging, and in the course of driving the opposition back with his 25-ball 29, also enlivened what had otherwise been a dreary batting effort from Pakistan. Sohail struck three sixes off Rangana Herath – two down the ground, and one over cow corner – before he ran at Herath immediately after having the last of those big blows, and got himself stumped. That wicket completed Herath’s 32nd career five-wicket haul, and his seventh against Pakistan. He would go on to claim innings figures of 5 for 93, but will now likely also have to summon some of his best work with the bat. While Hasan made rapid ground at one end, Haris had moved competently past 50 at the other, in his maiden Test innings. The fours square on the offside, and the sixes down the ground off the finger spinners, were the primary features of his eventual 76 off 161 balls. After Hasan departed and Pakistan found themselves nine down, Haris and Sri Lanka entered one of those frustratingly dull periods, where the field was spread for the first four balls while Haris was on strike, and the batsman routinely turned down singles in order to protect Mohammad Abbas, the No. XI. Abbas, however, proved himself capable of resisting, seeing out 34 balls for his one run. Eventually, though, the third new ball was taken, and Haris was caught by mid-off, off the bowling of Nuwan Pradeep. Pakistan had, by then, limped over Sri Lanka’s 419 to establish a three-run lead. The worry, as ever, for Sri Lanka was that beyond Rangana Herath, there was not much penetration in the attack. Dilruwan Perera claimed a solitary wicket in his 37 overs, and Lakshan Sandakan went wicketless while conceding 98. The seamers were marginally better. Lakmal had achieved good movement off the seam in the first session to take two wickets, including that of Sarfraz Ahmed, who had played on attempting to inject some urgency into the innings. Pradeep, who had dismissed Babar Azam with the last ball of day three, also claimed two wickets. If the match hurtles to a conclusion after having ambled aimlessly for so long, it would be the third Test between these two teams that has taken that rough form. In 2014, the third Test in Sharjah had been interminably dull until Pakistan chased down 302 inside 58 overs. Later that same year, Herath took five wickets on the final day of what was otherwise a torpid Test, to set up the thrilling – and eventually successful – pursuit of a small score on the final evening.

Aston Villa Preparing Offer For Real Madrid’s Dani Ceballos

Aston Villa are preparing an offer for former Arsenal loanee and current Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos, according to reports.

The Villans have already reinforced their midfield options by signing Youri Tielemans this summer, and are now reportedly looking towards the La Liga giants to bolster their squad even further.

Is Dani Ceballos signing for Aston Villa?

The Midlands club are set to offer Real Madrid £15m for the 13-cap Spain international at the request of manager Unai Emery, according to Spanish outlet Diario Sport.

It comes as little surprise to see Villa reportedly so willing to splash the cash, given that they've not been shy when it comes to spending so far this summer, welcoming Moussa Diaby, Tielemans, and Pau Torres for a reported combined fee of €88m (£76m).

Now, it seems as though they're turning their attention to Ceballos, who previously impressed during a loan spell at Arsenal in the 2019/20 season.

Read the latest Aston Villa transfer news HERE…

It wasn't so long ago that Villa were struggling in the bottom-half of the Premier League table under Steven Gerrard. One mid-season managerial change later, however, and Europa Conference League football beckons for a side now in a position to target Real Madrid's Champions League winning stars. It has been some turnaround at Villa Park.

Should Aston Villa sign Dani Ceballos?

If Aston Villa see their reported £15m bid accepted for Ceballos, then it is a deal worth taking the risk on. The Spaniard may have struggled to fully establish himself at the Santiago Bernabeu, but a move back to the Premier League could see him rediscover his best form, especially under compatriot Emery.

And if Villa can get the best out of Ceballos, then a £15m deal may well become the bargain of the summer in English football. Likely paired with Tielemans and Douglas Luiz, the Midlands club could have themselves one of the best midfield trios outside the Premier League's traditional big six.

Indeed, when compared with his positional peers across the top five European leagues, Ceballos ranks in the 93rd percentile for assists per 90, 97th percentile for pass completion and 99th for successful take-ons, creative skills which could be complemented by Tielemans' box-to-box role and Luiz's defensive attributes.

The midfielder received plenty of praise when on loan at Arsenal, with Tony Cascarino saying in his column in The Times: "Dani Ceballos impressed me. He has a bit of everything: tenacity, technical ability, and he wore the shirt as if he was an Arsenal player from 15 years ago. It felt like he really wanted to show his hunger to play and Arsenal have missed that enormously in midfield recently.

“He showed what he is about. He is on loan so Arsenal will have to hope he doesn’t do too well, meaning they can’t sign him.”

Ahead of the forthcoming campaign, Villa look stronger than they have in a long time. Under Emery, they could reach new heights, with fresh faces, potentially including Ceballos, playing a large part in that.

It remains to be seen whether the Villans' reported incoming bid will be accepted by Real Madrid, however.

Man United have "been able to sneak in" with "interesting development"

Manchester United have a World Cup-winning defender on their shortlist at Old Trafford as Erik Ten Hag looks to bolster his backline before the end of the window, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Is Benjamin Pavard moving to Manchester United and who could he replace?

According to The Daily Mail, West Ham United have had a £30 million bid accepted for Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, who is now mulling over whether to take the Hammers up on their offer and move to the London Stadium.

David Moyes would consider appointing Maguire as club captain following the departure of Declan Rice to Arsenal; however, the England international could yet look to stay on at Manchester United or explore other available opportunities to further his career.

In light of the speculation surrounding Maguire's future, Manchester United have drawn up a four-man shortlist to replace the 30-year-old this summer, which includes Benjamin Pavard of Bayern Munich, Crystal Palace stopper Marc Guehi, Nice star Jean-Clair Todibo and Bayer Leverkusen's Edmond Tapsoba, as per the same outlet.

Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has recently delivered an update regarding £83k-a-week earner Pavard's chances of securing a move to Old Trafford, stating on Twitter X: "Man Utd, at this stage the favorite in the poker for Benjamin Pavard! Pavard can really imagine to join MUFC as Ten Hag wants him. Concrete talks are ongoing and positive. Price valuation: Around €30m. Tuchel wants to keep him. Pavard wants to leave Bayern. Would be a massive loss for the club."

Pavard featured 43 times in all competitions for Bayern Munich last term, registering seven goals and one assist in the process, as per Transfermarkt.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, transfer insider Jones has indicated that Pavard is top of Manchester United's list of potential recruits to strengthen the heart of their backline.

Jones stated: “Manchester United have been hoping that Harry Maguire would become open to this move, but obviously it’s out of their hands how much West Ham United can offer him and the buying club have to be a little careful not to rattle current important members of their squad with the personal terms they are putting to Maguire.

“It does impact them though because of Maguire looking after his own needs, and we all know the good terms he has been on at United, so those issues are just being tied up at both ends. The links to a new centre back have been long-standing, and they have seen other targets like Disasi pass them by, but there is little they could do because it was always going to take a domino effect for them to be able to step up their interest levels with any of the key targets.

“Pavard is such an interesting development in terms of this because there has been no serious mention of it before now. I think a lot of that was that they couldn’t be active and also knew that Manchester City wanted him if Kyle Walker left. The door is still open for them here though, so they have been able to sneak in and are trying to work out the financials around whether that deal is feasible. My information is that they would now choose him ideally over someone like Edmond Tapsoba or Jean-Clair Todibo, but obviously the scouting reports on those two are fully complete and strong.

“Todibo in particular I have always been told is a very key target, so it’s interesting if they decide to totally dismiss that one now. Pavard has a level of experience and establishment in the game that United like very much and the fact he is so adaptable will be a real asset to Ten Hag. The latest update is that United are very hopeful rather than confident on this but the fact they have been able to even seriously consider it is positive, and the player has indicated that he would like the move.”

What next for Manchester United?

Manchester United will open their Premier League account at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday and will be keen to showcase their credentials as potential title winners this term, as per Sky Sports.

Alongside Maguire, The Mirror claim that Fred, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek are likely to be sold as Ten Hag looks to streamline his squad in the final weeks of the window.

Fred

Fiorentina enforcer Sofyan Amrabat has emerged as a 'top target' for Manchester United and will be targeted now that Rasmus Hojlund has arrived at Old Trafford, as per The Daily Mail.

Turkish journalist Sercan Hamzaoglu has claimed that French striker Anthony Martial has been offered to Fenerbache as the Red Devils look to resolve his future at the club.

Sri Lanka's 'upset' adds significance to day-night Test

Big Picture

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that seven days ago, disillusionment with the Sri Lankan team was greater than it has been at any point in the past two decades. This was a team that had lost a five-match ODI series at home against Zimbabwe, a first in their history. This was a team that was whitewashed across formats by India at home just weeks earlier, losing all nine games; they had lost fewer home games to India in the entire 1990s. This was a team that couldn’t decide on a coach, settle on a captain, or chance upon a victory. They were just about to play a Test match against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi, a venue where Pakistan had never lost in the format. It was the first match in a two-Test series against Pakistan, who had never lost a Test series in the UAE.Pakistan-Sri Lanka contests are often unpredictable, but Sri Lanka’s win in Abu Dhabi must still rank as one of the more remarkable in the island nation’s history. Since Pakistan shifted base to the UAE in 2009, England and Australia have combined to play eight Tests against them in the desert, losing seven and never winning one. It is the place Pakistan have sought refuge in after foreign wallopings, relishing grinding opposition to dust in the oppressive heat before spinning them out cheaply. For Sri Lanka to be at their weakest, and even more so playing without their talisman Angelo Mathews, and to match Pakistan and sucker-punch them at the death is an achievement that deserves more attention that it’ll get. But then again, that’s Pakistan-Sri Lanka contests for you.So the second Test in Dubai takes on a particularly fateful air for the hosts. The second day-night Test at the venue could finally see the sun set on Pakistan’s spotless record at their adopted home. If they cannot pull off a win, it will see Sri Lanka (Sri Lanka!) become the first team to win a Test series against Pakistan in Dubai. It could very well happen, too. Pakistan came into the series favourites not due to doing anything special themselves, but because of the turmoil of their visitors. The fifth day collapse in Abu Dhabi – an alarming trend over the past two years – reminded everyone how vulnerable they are in the absence of Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan. Losing the toss and having to bowl first might have made people notice how frequently they’ve been lucky with the coin at home over the past few Tests; they had won the toss in all home Tests against Australia, Sri Lanka, England and West Indies in the past three years. Whether they can bowl teams out cheaply on the first day is very much up for debate. For Sri Lanka, who interim coach Nic Pothas recently said were sick of talking about transition, this is a marquee opportunity to build a solid foundation from the rock bottom they reached in the India series. Captain Dinesh Chandimal, who has often been derided as inconsistent, will have found form and confidence with a gritty unbeaten 155, while the evergreen Rangana Herath continues to lurk in the minds of Pakistan’s batsmen, needing no further invitation to prove his class now that he’s joined the elite 400-wicket club. For both sides, then, this is a rare phenomena. It is a Test that actually really matters.

Form guide

In the spotlight

While the clamour for Fawad Alam’s return to the side has grown to fever pitch, one can hardly overlook that Haris Sohail made a stellar debut in Abu Dhabi. He was the top aggregate run-scorer for Pakistan, scoring 76 and 34 – the only batsman to score more than 20 runs in that disastrous fourth innings. After a lengthy absence from the international stage, he showed the grit and patience required of any cricketer playing a Test match in theEmirates, batting intelligently with the tail in the first innings, and combining with his captain for a 42-run partnership in the second that at one stage looked like it might get his side home. There is a yawning gap in Pakistan’s middle order for reasons well documented, and if Haris wants to slot in there, he has made a good start. Dubai is a chance to build on it.Kusal Mendis, touted as a future Sri Lankan captain, had a poor outing in Abu Dhabi. With Kaushal Silva and Lahiru Thirimanne also disappointing in the first Test, Sri Lanka might be worried about looking to their lower-middle order to continue to bail them out. Niroshan Dickwella had a terrific game, but, he’s also the wicketkeeper, and Sri Lanka might not want to burden him with too many expectations in every game. The point need hardly be made, but Sri Lanka know better than anyone that not all left-hand wicketkeepers are the same.

Team news

No other changes are expected.Pakistan (probable): 1 Sami Aslam, 2 Shan Masood, 3 Azhar Ali, 4 Asad Shafiq, 5 Babar Azam, 6 Haris Sohail, 7 Sarfraz Ahmed (capt & wk), 8 Mohammad Amir, 9 Yasir Shah, 10 Wahab Riaz, 11 Mohammad AbbasSri Lanka were dealt a blow when Angelo Mathews was ruled out of the second Test as well. Pitch and conditions

Dinesh Chandimal reckoned the pitch was similar to Abu Dhabi’s in its dryness. Humidity levels will be high, something Sarfraz thought would assist the quick bowlers. How the pink ball plays under lights is, to a large extent, still an unknown quantity.

Stats and trivia

  • Pakistan will slip to seventh in the rankings if they fail to win this match. That will be their lowest position since October 2010. This time last year, they were No. 1
  • If one can consider India’s Harbhajan Singh done with Test cricket – which he isn’t, officially – Rangana Herath is the only active spinner with 400 wickets. The only other active bowlers overall who have crossed the mark are England’s James Anderson and South Africa’s Dale Steyn

Spurs: Bayern Munich’s Latest Kane Offer Rejected

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has rejected another bid from Bayern Munich for Harry Kane, according to The Athletic's David Ornstein.

What's the latest Tottenham transfer news?

The Kane transfer saga has been going on for quite some time, with the striker reportedly agreeing terms on a move to Bayern way back at the end of June, however it does not appear as though he will force a move this summer.

Journalist Paul Brown believes he does not want to damage his reputation by pushing to leave, recently telling GiveMeSport:

"It doesn't look like he is going to agitate for a move. I think he remembers from before, when Manchester City came in, just how much of a backlash there was when it looked like he was trying to engineer that transfer. He then ended up having to come back and face the music.

"I don't think he's going to push like that again this summer, so it really comes down to how talks go between the clubs."

As such, Bayern may have to match Tottenham's huge demands for the striker if they are to sign him this summer, with recent reports indicating they have submitted an £86m "take ir ot leave it" bid, giving the Lilywhites until midnight on Friday to respond.

Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg took Twitter to dismiss reports of a set deadline, saying: "Poker is ongoing as there was never a deadline. There was only the wish of an answer this weekend."

The Athletic's Ornstein has now given his own development and revealed that answer – the bid has been rejected. Despite being improved on the previous two attempts it is still a fair bit of shy of the Lilywhites' demands.

Is Harry Kane leaving Tottenham?

Football Insider have previously reported that Spurs may be willing to accept an offer of £100m for their new captain, so the German champions may simply have to stump up the cash if they are to prise him away from the north London club.

An offer of that size would make the England international Tottenham's most expensive departure of all time, despite the fact he has just one year remaining on his contract, and he is unwilling to commit to a new deal.

Of course, it would be a huge blow for Spurs to lose their all-time top scorer, but it may be difficult to resist a bid of £100m, considering there is seemingly a very good chance he could leave for free next summer if they do not compete for silverware this season.

Ange Postecoglou has recently confirmed he is in "open dialogue" with the striker over his future, also adding he "can't wait" for a decision to be made either way, as he continues to build his squad ahead of the new season.

Postecoglou's need for clarity over whether Kane is leaving the club could pressure Levy into making a decision soon, but for the meantime it appears as though he will continue to play hardball with Bayern Munich.
