Geoff Lawson, Pakistan’s coach, has apologised to the media a day after the heated press conference following the defeat to Sri Lanka on Sunday, which left them on the brink of elimination from the Asia Cup.Media persons had walked out after Lawson asked a senior journalist to “improve his English” and told another reporter “if you are rude I’ll have to leave.” The remarks came right after Lawson laid down a few rules for reporters before fielding questions. “Don’t make statements, ask questions,” he said. “If someone asks a question twice, I won’t answer it. Make questions sensible, otherwise I won’t answer it.”Lawson apologised through a statement issued by the PCB. “I would like to clarify that the incident that took place at the press conference after the Pakistan and Sri Lanka match is most unfortunate,” he said. “What happened was regrettable and I would like to apologise for the events that led to the incident.”I assure everyone that as coach of the Pakistan team, I look forward to having healthy, cordial and good relations with the media as has been the case in the past,” he said. “I appreciate that the media has a job on hand to do and at the end of the day our collective efforts should be focused on getting good performances from the team.”The journalists who attended the conference, though, categorically refused to accept the apology. They demanded an apology from Lawson in person, and not through a press release. They wore black armbands and protested for 15 minutes outside the National Stadium in the break between the innings of the Sri Lanka-Bangladesh match. It took a handwritten letter from Lawson apologising “unconditionally” to appease the journalists. While they are satisfied for the time being, they are expecting an apology from Lawson in person on Tuesday, after Pakistan’s training session at the DHA Ground.Lawson hasn’t had the best relations with the media since an irritable post-match press conference after Pakistan lost to South Africa in Karachi last August, his first Test as coach.

Swansea City interested in Eddie Howe

Swansea City are considering a move to bring Eddie Howe to the Liberty Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Times, who claimed that, following Steve Cooper’s surprising departure from the club earlier this week, Howe has emerged as one of the leading candidates to take over from the 41-year-old at the Championship side.

The report goes on to mention that, after failing to land the Crystal Palace job earlier this summer, it was felt that the relationship between Cooper and the Swansea hierarchy had run its course, although the Welshman nevertheless remained at the club.

However, with just two weeks remaining until the start of the new Championship season, it was mutually decided that Cooper and the club would go their separate ways.

Howe would be Cooper’s perfect replacement

With Swansea’s parachute payments from the Premier League ending this year, co-owner Jason Levien is believed to be interested in appointing a manager who will continue Cooper’s impressive work of developing youngsters. However, as a result of the club’s financial situation, this is now a requirement rather than a choice of style.

With Howe having both a history of developing a club’s youth prospects, as well as boasting the record of having taken a cash-strapped Bournemouth side from League Two to the Premier League via three promotions in six seasons during his time in charge of the south coast club, the 43-year-old dubbed an “exciting” coach by Jurgen Klopp would very much appear to be Cooper’s perfect replacement at the Liberty Stadium this summer.

However, with it being widely reported that John Eustace now looks set to be named as the new Swans manager, it would appear unlikely that Howe will indeed be making a move to Wales this summer. Levien’s rather rapid decision to make a move for the Queens Park Rangers assistant manager very much seems to be a decision which has the potential to come back to haunt the co-owner, particularly with a candidate such as Howe freely available on the market.

Leicester can sign Berardi for £34m

An update has emerged on Leicester transfer target Domenico Berardi regarding how much Sassuolo are demanding for his services.

What’s the talk?

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, as relayed by Football Italia, Sassuolo are willing to part ways with the 26-year-old if they receive a fee of £34m (€40m) this summer.

The report claims that Milan and Lazio have been tracking Berardi in Serie A, whilst Leicester and Liverpool are the two teams from the Premier League showing an interest in his services.

Imagine him and Barnes

Leicester director Jon Rudkin must seal a deal for Berardi at £34m as he could complete Brendan Rodgers’ attack for next season by bringing the Italy international to England. The Foxes already have James Maddison, Harvey Barnes, Kelechi Iheanacho and Jamie Vardy at their disposal, but they are missing a top-quality right-sided attacker among their attacking arsenal.

Berardi could be the player they are lacking and he could take Marc Albrighton’s place in the side. In eight games as a starter on the right of midfield, the Leicester veteran recorded a modest WhoScored rating of 6.67 as he registered zero goals and one assist in those games. He started 13 games as a winger in all competitions, scoring once and setting up three goals.

This suggests that Rodgers needs a player to come in and take Albrighton’s place, and that is where Berardi comes in. Former Italy head coach Arrigo Sacchi once hailed the 26-year-old as a “great talent” and backed his shy personality to help him cope with becoming a successful footballer at the top level.

The one-time AC Milan boss told FourFourTwo: “Berardi is a player of great talent, a modern footballer who plays for the team all over the field.

“He has liveliness, intuition, temperament and strength combined with a good technique.

“He is an introverted youngster, but with his head on his shoulders. I don’t think popularity will make him lose enthusiasm and desire to improve.”

The wing wizard enjoyed a wonderful 2020/21 campaign with Sassuolo in Serie A. Across 28 league starts in Italy, Berardi accrued 17 goals and seven assists, averaging a phenomenal WhoScored rating of 7.42. To put this into the context of Leicester’s squad, he would rank first in WhoScored ratings and goals, whilst he would also come second in terms of assists.

Imagine him and Barnes on each flank for the Foxes, bombing down to the byline, scoring and creating goals alongside Maddison, Youri Tielemans, Iheanacho and Vardy. It could lead to some exciting, free-flowing football in the Midlands and that is why Leicester must pounce on the Italian dynamo and bring him to the Premier League this summer.

Celtic: Hoops finalise Bosun Lawal signing

Celtic have finalised the signing of former Watford midfielder Bosun Lawal, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Lawal profiled

Lawal is 18 years of age and is an Irish midfielder. His contract at Vicarage Road expired last month, but the Hoops will have to pay compensation for the available teenager.

He was named Watford’s 2020/21 academy player of the season but never managed to break into the Hornets’ first-team squad.

Celtic have already signed youngsters Liam Shaw, Osaze Urhoghide and Joey Dawson this summer, and it seems as if Lawal will be their fourth addition of the window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-9/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Source shares development on midfielder

According to Football Insider, who were informed by a Celtic source, the Hoops have had a six-figure compensation bid accepted for Lawal.

He passed a medical and signed a contract on Tuesday, with Football Insider claiming a deal is now completed and ready to be announced.

The Verdict: Time for senior additions…

It’s good to see that Celtic are bringing some young talents to Parkhead, as that was one of their transfer strategies way back in the New Year.

However, the Hoops now need senior additions fairly quickly, with the new season around the corner.

Ange Postecoglou is prioritising a right-back, centre-back and a winger as areas to strengthen, but it doesn’t look like he’ll get any senior additions in before the club’s Champions League qualifier, as the deadline to be registered is on Thursday.

If the new manager cannot secure qualification due to the club’s inactivity in the market, it would be a worrying sign that nothing has changed at the club despite some different personnel at the top.

Spurs: Gold makes exciting Paratici claim

An exciting claim has been made about Fabio Paratici after he was appointed as Tottenham Hotspur’s new director of football last week…

What’s the word?

The Premier League outfit has not had someone in such a role since 2015, when Franco Baldini departed North London, so this hire presents something of a new approach from chairman Daniel Levy and the club.

Paratici arrives from a similar position at Italian giants Juventus, where he played a major part in his club clinching 19 trophies in 11 years, as well as bringing in some big-name signings like Cristiano Ronaldo.

That is something that football.london’s Alasdair Gold has alluded to this week. In a Q&A session with supporters, the ever-reliable journalist dropped an interesting verdict on the 48-year-old.

When asked about the Italian’s working methods and whether he’d have one eye on the future or on making an immediate impact, Gold responded:

“His history at Juventus suggests both.

“He was very good at getting free transfers over his 11 years, although there has been the odd recent one that hasn’t hit the spot like [Aaron] Ramsey and [Adrien] Rabiot, while [he] has also spent the money when required on immediate impact players.

“One thing is clear and that is that he has a huge network of contacts and good relationships with clubs across the game and he’ll be able to help deliver what Tottenham require within the parameters the club’s finances dictate.”

Very exciting news

There are a few key things to take away from this, all of which should excite the Spurs faithful, especially after what some are considering an “underwhelming” appointment of incoming manager Paulo Fonseca.

Not to mention that many have protested against Levy and the club’s owners, the ENIC group, in the past few months.

Paratici has a mighty task on his hands to lift the mood at Spurs.

The North Londoners finished in seventh place, their lowest final position since the 2008/09 campaign, meaning they’ll be competing in the newly-formed Conference League – aka. UEFA’s third-rate competition.

And then there’s the small matter of Harry Kane’s future at the club.

Sky Sports claim that he has expressed his desire to leave, with three of Spurs’ top-flight rivals registering interest in the England talisman. His future likely won’t be resolved until well after the Euros, however.

Paratici will also need to shift players on and find the right signings to give Fonseca the best chance of bringing success to Spurs.

Gold claims that the Italian has a very good contact book and a proven track record in delivering on all fronts, so this should come as a major source of confidence amongst the Lilywhites fanbase

Perhaps most importantly, he is expected to deliver all this whilst still abiding by the club’s transfer budget and finances, which right now, seems like somewhat of an impossible feat but Gold is evidently confident he can do exactly that.

Some of his best signings in Turin include Paulo Dybala, Ronaldo, Paul Pogba and Andrea Pirlo. Some of whom arrived on a free transfer, so if Paratici can sparkle that magic in N17 this summer, then Spurs will be put in a very good position.

All in all, this latest suggestion from the trustworthy football.london correspondent is hugely exciting. It’s now time for Levy to hand him the keys and get to work.

West Brom: Baggies will not replace departed Luke Dowling

West Bromwich Albion are set to dump their Sporting Director model, following the departure of Luke Dowling yesterday [Football Insider].

The Lowdown: Baggies endure rocky start to 2021/22

The Baggies have endured a bumpy start to 2021/22, as they search for a new manager to mount a Sky Bet Championship title challenge.

This time last week, David Wagner was almost certain to inherit the Hawthorns hotseat after advanced talks with the club [Express and Star].

However, talks eventually collapsed as the German-American elected to take the BSC Young Boys managerial role instead [BBC].

Despite links with Frank Lampard, Michael Appleton and Chris Wilder, there has been no progress on the head-coach front [GIVEMESPORT].

In light of this, West Brom look to have shuffled their deck as pre-season draws ever closer.

The Latest: Sporting Director model scrapped; Dowling will not be replaced

Following weeks of drawn-out talks with multiple candidates, Dowling has left the building and will not be replaced as Sporting Director [Football Insider].

Intriguingly, a club source has revealed that West Brom are looking to pass most player recruitment responsibility on to their prospective new boss.

Inheriting a squad requiring major surgery, they are seeking a “traditional” manager with strong connections within football [Football Insider].

The Verdict: Short-termism?

This approach may go against the grain of modern footballing practices. With more clubs moving into a structure that includes a director of football, some onlookers may treat the news with scepticism and see it as a short-term fix.

On the other hand, West Brom are facing a race against the clock as they look to assemble a promotion worthy outfit. Short-term gain is imperative not only on the pitch but from a financial standpoint.

For 12 months, it may just be worth the risk if they can recruit the correct manager to make a real go of life in the English second-tier, and perhaps revert back to a recruitment chief model once short-term goals are achieved.

In other news, a pundit is unconvinced by a reported West Bromwich Albion managerial target.

Gold makes exciting Paratici claim at Spurs

Speaking in a Q&A for football.london, reliable Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold has made a promising claim involving Fabio Paratici and how his appointment can benefit for the club.

The Lowdown: Paratici arrives…

The Italian transfer guru has now been officially appointed as managing director of Tottenham and has a major say in overseeing all sporting operations at the club in terms – including facilities and football infrastructure (tottenhamhotspur.com).

Of course, the aspect of his role drawing most excitement is his reputation for facilitating big transfers in the market.

At former club Juventus, Paratici garnered a reputation for being an astute operator and played a key role in signing superstar Cristiano Ronaldo for the Turin club (The Daily Mail).

The Latest: Gold makes promising Paratici claim…

Speaking in a Q&A, when asked exactly what Paratici will bring to the table at Tottenham in terms of landing youngsters or immediate impact signings, Gold dropped a promising claim.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-2/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“His history at Juventus suggests both,” the reporter explained.

“He was very good at getting free transfers over his 11 years, although there has been the odd recent one that hasn’t hit the spot like Ramsey and Rabiot, while he has also spent the money when required on immediate impact players.

“One thing is clear and that is that he has a huge network of contacts and good relationships with clubs across the game and he’ll be able to help deliver what Tottenham require within the parameters the club’s finances dictate.”

The Verdict: Promising…

Gold’s behind the scenes claim on just how well connected Paratici is will come as music to the ears of some supporters.

Lilywhites chairman Daniel Levy also recently heralded the 48-year-old as a ‘tough negotiator’ and that is something Spurs will definitely need in this odd transfer landscape struck by the financial implications of Covid-19.

Spurs will need to operate astutely given their sell-to-buy transfer policy and Paratici may just be the man for a tough summer task ahead.

New Zealand inquiry strikes similar problems to ACU

Investigation of allegations against former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe are striking problems similar to those outlined by Anti-Corruption Unit boss Sir Paul Condon. While Crowe and his lawyer David Howman have been very helpful to the New Zealand investigating unit, more evidence is still required and inquiry units overseas. In a statement today, the chairman of the New Zealand unit Sir Ian Barker said:The publication of the Report by Sir Paul Condon has not altered the focus of the New Zealand Inquiry into statements about Martin Crowe contained in the Indian CBI Report.Sir Paul’s Report demonstrates some of the difficulties experienced by his Anti-Corruption Unit in obtaining evidence. This Inquiry is to a large degree dependent on ACU assistance in obtaining access to primary evidence overseas referrable to the statements regarding Martin Crowe. In New Zealand considerable progress has been made in preparation for the interview of Mr Crowe and receiving other evidence. While the interview is scheduled for June, it may yet be delayed depending on current inquiries by the ACU.New Zealand Cricket through its Board and Sir John Anderson have provided whatever resource is needed for this Inquiry, and given an unfettered discretion as to how it should be conducted. Martin Crowe and his counsel David Howman have throughout provided full co-operation.The Panel and those parties are concerned to see this Inquiry concluded as soon as possible, but only when all relevant evidence is obtained or else a point is reached that the Inquiry must proceed without it. Any other course would be unsatisfactory to this Panel, Martin Crowe and New Zealand Cricket. It should be emphasised again that the Panel can proceed only with co-operation. From some quarters it has had that, and is pressing hard through all available channels for further information.

Rodrigo Pimpão e Pachu, este recém-promovido do time sub-20.

O contrato com o Glorioso termina no fim deste ano.
