Barsby blasts selectors over Hopes omission

Trevor Barsby, the Queensland coach, has slammed Australia’s selectors for their treatment of the allrounder James Hopes, who has been left out of next week’s one-day series against Sri Lanka

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Oct-2010Trevor Barsby, the Queensland coach, has slammed Australia’s selectors for their treatment of the allrounder James Hopes, who has been left out of next week’s one-day series against Sri Lanka. A 15-man squad was chosen but surprisingly there was no room for Hopes, who has not missed any of Australia’s past 15 ODIs but will instead line up for the Bulls. This year has also been one of Hopes’ best on the international scene; he has won two Man-of-the-Match awards since February, having never claimed that honour in his first 71 one-day internationals. Despite his record, Hopes has reportedly been told by the selectors they are looking to take only two allrounders, Shane Watson and Steven Smith, to next year’s World Cup.”I’m not sure what is going on,” Barsby said on Wednesday. “I hope this decision just means they wanted to give James some [domestic] cricket after the Indian series. I would be disgusted if, after having done everything that has been asked of him in the Australian side – whether that be opening the batting, opening the bowling, closing out the innings at No. 6 or 7 or bowling at the death – that they would even think of discarding him like this.”It’s not the sort of treatment you expect of a player who does whatever job was asked of him, and does it by executing his skill to the very best of his ability. You won’t hear the bloke himself complain, that’s not his way. He just gets on with things and puts the team first. But I can say without a shadow of doubt that he remains one of the best players in the country in the limited-overs arena and hopefully the selectors continue to acknowledge that.”Hopes has played 84 ODIs since his debut in 2005 and has a decent collection of 1326 runs at 25.01 and 67 wickets at 35.58, but he is often the first man dropped if the selectors want a different balance. At 32, next year will probably be his final chance to play in a World Cup after he was overlooked in 2007.

Moshiri believes in Everton stadium project

A finance expert has now dropped an exciting Everton revelation involving Farhad Moshiri and the Bramley Moore stadium project.

The Lowdown: American interest

As per The Daily Mail, the Goodison Park faithful have now attracted interest from American bidders willing to pay £350m to buy them.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Moshiri is looking for outside investment to help fund the Bramley Moore project, after investing more than £500m in the Merseyside club since his arrival.

The Latest: Maguire reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, finance expert Kieran Maguire has now given his reaction to the reported interest, revealing that Moshiri thinks that the Bramley Moore project will ‘turn things around financially’:

“If the £350m means Moshiri writing off his debt then they would be getting it at a discount.

“Moshiri effectively bought them for £175m. Since then, he has added to the club by lending it large sums of money.

“He would end up having to take cut in terms of the total he has invested into Everton. A lot will depend on how he feels on a long-term basis.

“The noises I’ve heard from Everton are that he is committed and believes the Bramley Moore project will turn things around financially.

“That will coincide with things improving on the pitch as well because the more resources you have coming in, the more you can spend on new signings.

“As far as new owners would be concerned, they’d have to fund the stadium. So, it’s £350m plus the £400m to £500m that the stadium is going to cost.

The Verdict: Exciting

Given the concern for the Toffees in terms of the losses recorded in their financial accounts, the fact that the Bramley Moore project could ‘turn things around financially’ is certainly exciting.

Of course, new investment would help with that, whether that is Moshiri continuing to show his commitment or the American businessmen coming in.

The stadium is going to cost a lot of money in itself, but the Blues would hope that the money generated from its initial construction would surpass that, and so they could find themselves in a better financial position, while the supporters get to enjoy the new stadium.

Nonetheless, the club need a boost after what has happened to them on the pitch this season, and the new stadium should go some way in providing that.

Roshane Thomas alarmed by Antonio’s form

Following West Ham United’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Brentford on Sunday, The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas has voiced his concerns over the form of Michail Antonio.

The Lowdown: Antonio in poor form

The 32-year-old started the season with a bang after scoring four goals and setting up another three in the Irons’ opening three league games. However, in recent weeks the Jamaica international has struggled in front of goal, having failed to score in his last 12 Premier League appearances.

As such, the former Nottingham Forest player has copped criticism for his lack of end product – a worrying issue for David Moyes, with Antonio being the only senior striker at the east London club.

The Latest: Thomas’ verdict on Antonio

Thomas has been left concerned over Antonio’s form, exacerbated by the number of important games which are fast approaching in West Ham’s schedule.

Taking to Twitter at the full-time whistle on Sunday afternoon, the journalist stated: “Disappointing performance. Antonio’s form is a concern. He hasn’t scored in his last 12 league games. Brentford played without Jansson for the first time all season but Antonio and others failed to capitalise on that. Need to see a response against Lyon”

The Verdict: Big push needed

The 32-year-old’s lack of goals was proving to be a huge issue for West Ham, given Jarrod Bowen’s recent absence, although with the star winger now back, this may alleviate the pressure on Antonio’s shoulders.

However, if the Jamaica striker wants to maintain his place in Moyes’s starting XI next season, he will need to make a big push to illustrate why he deserves to be in contention. His overall performance against Brentford was one to forget, so it’s quite understandable why Thomas is so alarmed over the player’s recent form.

Antonio could certainly do with a goal against Lyon on Thursday night to answer the critics…

Liverpool deliver injury update on Thiago

Liverpool will be without Thiago for their Premier League clash against Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon following Jurgen Klopp’s recent update.

What’s the story?

Speaking about the 30-year-old in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Carabao Cup match against Arsenal in midweek, Klopp revealed: “Hopefully, he will be in full team training after the international break, to prepare for the Cardiff game.”

Big miss for Liverpool

The Spaniard has had his fair share of injury problems this season for Liverpool as he struggles to get consistent game-time under his belt – his longest run of action saw him make seven appearances in the Premier League consecutively between November and December.

However, that run illustrated signs of Thiago being back to his absolute best, with the midfielder starting in six successive games and seeing the Reds rattle off win after win – Klopp’s side scored 17 goals and conceded just twice in that time.

As per WhoScored, his average match rating of 7.07 ranks him as Liverpool’s second-best performing midfielder this season in the Premier League behind only Fabinho.

It’s therefore no surprise that Noel Whelan has recently admitted an early return for Thiago would be a huge boost to the Reds. He said: “It’s in those sorts of times where you perhaps turn to a player like Thiago with his bags of experience.

“A quick return would certainly be a timely return from Liverpool’s perspective. Players like him are the ones with the voices in the dressing room and out on the pitch.

“They’ll need to dig deep to win games without players like Mane and Salah, and if he can come back then it’ll be massive to have a wily old fox like him available.”

Alas, the news that he will still be missing against Crystal Palace is sure to be a blow for Klopp, and will also leave Reds fans gutted ahead of Sunday.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are still monitoring this Premier League star…

Warne gives thumbs-up for new franchises

Rajasthan Royals captain Shane Warne has said the IPL’s decision to add two new franchises for the fourth season will add more sheen to the “best-selling brand of cricket”.”Every cricketer now dreams of playing for his country and also in the IPL,” Warne said. “The decision will give more opportunity to them. The IPL has attracted more people towards the sport. Those who retired recently were attracted too. I feel it has become the best competition of cricket.”Rajasthan entered the fray as underdogs in 2008, but were easily the best team in the competition and deserving victors. Deccan Chargers, who finished last in 2008 did likewise in the second edition, going from no-hopers to winners. Warne believed that starting as dark horses and working their way up was a successful Rajasthan strategy.”The other teams copied it, which proves that our brand was successful. This year too, we have a number of options and that might be used as secret weapons,” Warne said.He was however quick to admit to his side’s inconsistency in the second edition. “Yes, we were not consistent last year,” Warne said. “We will address that problem and would do better since we are back on the home turf. We have a strong group of players and a few of them are capable of surprising everyone in IPL 3. At top of the order there is South Africa captain Graeme Smith, who is like a rock.”The experience of Damien Martyn and Shane Watson, youngsters like Michael Lumb and Adam Voges have made us a formidable side. We have some very good talented Indian players too.”Warne believed that Jaipur was a lucky venue for his side and looked forward to playing at the home base again. “It [Jaipur] has been lucky for us. We won all the seven outings here in IPL 1 and we would be playing here against the tough teams like Mumbai Indians, who have Sachin Tendulkar and many other great players. It would give us confidence to take them on here which has lovely outfield and nice pitch,” Warne said.Warne said he was also banking on the allrounder Yusuf Pathan’s home form for the third edition. “He was not that consistent in South Africa but he is a matchwinner. Not many of the batsmen can hit the first ball they face for a six. He had grabbed few Man-of-the-Match awards in the first edition of the IPL. He has the capability to change the course of any match.”I’m going to entrust the responsibility to my team-mates. I am sure they will be ready to grab the opportunity willingly. In our team, all players are equal and that is our strength. I make them believe that we can win from any situation. That is why we won most of our last-ball finishes.”One of the concerns for Rajasthan ahead of the tournament is their captain and lead bowler’s lack of match-practice, but Warne brushed off those concerns in typical style. “I have been hit for many sixes. In Test matches too I was hit for the maximum sixes but had maximum number of wickets too. I don’t mind being hit for sixes as long as I keep on taking the crucial wickets,” Warne said. “I have turned few balls during the practice matches. I hope I would soon be in perfect rhythm.”Warne also said it was his love for both India and Australia that inspired him to contribute to easing off tensions between the two countries in the wake of attacks on Indians in Australia. In fact, the Shiv Sena, a right-wing Indian political party, had earlier claimed it would not allow Australian cricketers to participate in the competition as a protest against the attacks.”I hail from Victoria in Australia and have had the cricketing relations with India for more than 20 years,” Warne said. “I love all the three – Victoria, Australia and India. That is why I have tried to visit the Indian community in Victoria and had assured them.”Rajasthan kick off their IPL campaign with an away game against Mumbai Indians on March 13.

Under-pressure North escapes extra glare

All the attention on Clarke’s private life has meant that Marcus North has slipped under the radar

Brydon Coverdale in Wellington17-Mar-2010There is one man in the Australian team who would be a little relieved at Michael Clarke hogging the headlines this week. All the attention on Clarke’s private life has meant that Marcus North has slipped under the radar in the lead-up to a series that, should he fail to perform, could spell the end of his Test career. It was only a year ago that North burst on to the Test scene with a century on debut in Johannesburg, which was followed by two hundreds and a 96 on the Ashes tour. But since then the rewards have been fewer for North, who scratched through the home summer with 207 runs at 23 in six Tests. His Sheffield Shield form has not augured well either, and in seven games for Western Australia this summer he has managed only 294 runs at 24.50.His slip has been so pronounced that there is no guarantee he will even play the first Test in Wellington starting on Friday, although it is likely he will hold his place ahead of the in-form Steven Smith. North’s team-mates have been rallying around the struggling batsman, who has been working hard in the nets in Wellington in an attempt to reignite his Test career.”I know Ricky [Ponting] has been working with Northy in the nets, just on tiny little things just to try and improve his game,” Michael Hussey told Cricinfo. “For me, I just want to help him get into a good mental frame of mind so he can go out there, play his way, play with confidence, and he’s a class act and I’m sure he’ll be fine and scoring runs.”Hussey has known North since they both played junior cricket at Perth’s Wanneroo Cricket Club and he is desperately keen for his friend to regain the spark that escaped him against West Indies and Pakistan. The two men know each other’s games intimately and give one another pointers if they spot any errors.Hussey also understands the stress that can come with an extended lean patch in Test cricket, after he went 15 Tests without a century until he effectively saved his career with 121 at The Oval last year. He said the key for North was to keep trusting the game that had brought him this far and not to put too much pressure on himself.”Where I got myself into trouble was that when things weren’t quite going to plan, you start trying harder, you start becoming more intense, you start putting more pressure on yourself and it’s a natural human nature thing,” Hussey said. “But as soon as you take a step back, relax, go back to trusting what works for you, then suddenly it’s amazing how the consistency returns.”It will be difficult for North not to think about the pressure coming from outside the starting XI. His fellow debutant from the South African tour, Phillip Hughes, is hovering in the squad along with the allrounder Smith, who is coming off a superb Sheffield Shield season that brought him four centuries. At 20, Smith has the advantage of youth over the 30-year-old North. Should North play in Wellington and fail, there will be calls for the promotion of Smith, who was described by his New South Wales team-mate Clarke as “very confident”.”A lot has been made of Smithy coming out and saying he’s ready to take his opportunity when he gets it, and I think he’s shown that in the Twenty20 version for Australia and also for New South Wales,” Clarke said. “In all three forms of the game, he’s had a wonderful year. If he gets his chance he’ll grab it with both hands. If he doesn’t he’ll keep working his backside off and keep waiting for his opportunity.”As the beneficiary of Andrew Symonds departing from the Test scene, North knows full well that when opportunity knocks it is vital to respond positively. This week in Wellington, he needs to answer the call again.

Chief selector Qasim quits, refuses PCB request to stay on

Iqbal Qasim has tendered his resignation as Pakistan’s chief selector following the side’s disastrous results in Australia, where the team was whitewashed in both the Test and ODI series

Osman Samiuddin31-Jan-2010Iqbal Qasim has tendered his resignation as Pakistan’s chief selector following the side’s disastrous results in Australia, where the team was whitewashed in both the Test and ODI series in one of Pakistan’s most dispiriting campaigns in recent years. The PCB has turned down the resignation and asked Qasim to carry on till the Twenty20 World Cup in April but he appears adamant on his stand.”I am standing by my decision”, Qasim told Cricinfo.Earlier, on a day of fast-moving events, Qasim explained the reasons for his decision. “We made this team and it was the best possible team, but their performance has been really poor, unbelievably poor,” he said. “I had two options after this. One was to stick on, evaluate and analyse the performance or step down. Anyone would do a post-mortem so I thought it my moral responsibility to do this.”The move came within minutes of Pakistan’s two-wicket loss in Perth, sealing only their second-ever 5-0 blanking in ODI cricket. The statistic, in particular, hurt Qasim. “I have been very disturbed by it and it has really hurt. Everyone has a conscience and so with that in mind, I have stepped down. Clearly major surgery is required on the side,” he said. The PCB, though, was not playing ball. “The chairman has not accepted the resignation and asked him to continue till the World Twenty20,” Nadeem Sarwar, PCB’s media manager, told Cricinfo. However, it now seems a formality and the resignation, when accepted, will end a very short tenure for Qasim and likely bring in a third head of the selection committee in the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt’s tenure. Qasim took over in July last year, after Abdul Qadir had left the post claiming interference in his duties from external influences. His only assignments were the Champions Trophy, in which Pakistan reached the semi-final, and the the Test and ODI challenges against New Zealand and Australia.During this tour, on a couple of occasions disagreements with Mohammad Yousuf, the captain, cropped up, notably over the call-up of Misbah-ul-Haq in New Zealand and the request for Younis Khan for the Tests in Australia. That is not believed to be a factor behind the decision, however.Qasim was a member of the selection committee until the 2007 World Cup and had been appointed in an honorary post, continuing as a senior employee with the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP). As such, his honorary post was a break from recent practice, where the chief selectors were full-time, paid employees of the board. It is believed that at least one other member of the seven-man committee – who are paid selectors – is considering his future as well. The move is likely to spark an escalation in the tumult permanently surrounding the country’s cricket. Changes in the coaching set-up are expected after the series, as well as a change in the captaincy. Shahid Afridi led the side in the fifth ODI in Perth, after Mohammad Yousuf pulled out with what team officials said was a “stiff knee.” But reports in the local press claim that Yousuf chose not to play after disagreements with the team management over the final playing XI.Yousuf had reportedly been asked to rest from the side by the team management the night before the match, but initially refused. Ultimately disagreements over the team XI – Pakistan brought in Khalid Latif, Shoaib Malik and Sarfraz Ahmed – led Yousuf to sitting out, apparently in protest.

Spurs make ‘biggest offer’ for Rudiger

Speaking to GiveMeSport, reporter Dean Jones of Eurosport has made an exciting Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.

The Lowdown: Spurs in defender chase?

There have been no shortage of links to high-profile defensive stars since Antonio Conte took the Spurs helm.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, both Stefan de Vrij and Matthijs de Ligt have been mentioned as possible new recruits for Tottenham as their new manager seeks to oversee a north London overhaul.

These links could even be exacerbated by a ‘serious’ injury to summer signing Cristian Romero, with the big blow potentially threatening to hamper Conte’s rebuild.

The Latest: Jones drops Rudiger claim…

Amid Tottenham’s search for a centre-back, it appears they’ve now made an offer to sign yet another one on a pre-contract.

According to Jones, speaking to GMS, Spurs have actually made the ‘biggest offer’ for Rudiger in terms of salary – according to what he’s heard from people close to the Chelsea defender.

He explained:

Rudiger’s people, the biggest offer they’re hearing about is coming from Tottenham, in terms of wages.”

The Verdict: Great option?

A Champions League-winning centre-back and proven in the Premier League, signing the 28-year-old as a free agent for next summer could come as a no-brainer.

While that doesn’t solve the lack of cover for Romero, the Blues centre-back would almost certainly strengthen Conte’s options over his first full season in charge next year.

Lauded as an ‘animal’ and ‘unbelievable’ by pundit Rio Ferdinand, as well as for reaching the level of Man City star Ruben Dias at a point last campaign (FIVE via The Metro), his quality is obvious.

Currently in the prime of his career, managing director Fabio Paratici could secure one of the bargains of 2022 with a swoop for the Germany international.
