Phil Hay provides worrying Phillips update

Phil Hay has confirmed that Kalvin Phillips is suffering from a hip issue as well as a calf strain following Leeds United’s defeat to Southampton at the weekend.

The Lowdown: Leeds suffer disappointing loss

The Whites were beaten 1-0 at St Mary’s on Saturday afternoon, with Marcelo Bielsa’s side delivering a disappointing performance on their return to Premier League action.

Leeds never got going throughout the game and were deservedly beaten, and the defeat leaves them sitting 17th in the table.

The Latest: Hay provides worrying update

Someone who played no part in proceedings was Phillips, who was deemed unfit to feature having also missed England’s draw with Hungary in midweek.

Taking to Twitter after the game, Hay provided a worrying 10-word update, claiming that the 25-year-old is actually battling two separate injuries at the moment. He tweeted that Phillips has “also been suffering from a bit of a hip problem”.

The Verdict: Concerning news

This is concerning news from a Leeds perspective because it suggests that Phillips could face a longer spell on the sidelines than initially predicted if he is battling two separate fitness issues.

The midfielder is such a vital player for the Whites – his tough-tackling presence was badly missed against Saints – and they could find themselves in a relegation scrap without him around if they’re not careful.

Hopefully he is back sooner rather than later, as Leeds desperately try to find some momentum this season, with Phillips among several players in Bielsa’s squad to have been afflicted by injuries of late.

In other news, Leeds could be able to sign one transfer target in January. Find out who it is here.

Essex in control against Kent

Division Two

2nd dayEssex grasped the momentum against Kent at Chelmsford, bowling out the visitors for 205 and enforcing the follow-on. The hosts only added 40 to their overnight 330 for 7, and James Foster was an early victim, falling for 99, but Essex’s bowlers made quick inroads into a shaky Kent line-up. Chris Wright and David Masters helped reduce them to 96 for 6, before there was a late and much-needed salvage operation from Wayne Parnell, who carved 69 from 80 balls with two sixes and nine fours. However, Maurice Chambers and Danish Kaneria mopped up the rest to dismiss Kent for 205, and Wright then made an early inroad with the new ball in Kent’s second innings to leave them in a perilous position going into the third day.3rd dayAn intriguing final day is in store at Wantage Road tomorrow with Northamptonshire requiring 171 runs to beat Gloucestershire, but only have five wickets in hand. The visitors were very well placed at the start of the day, on 105 for 1 in their second innings, but crumbled to 237 all out. Hamish Marshall and Chris Taylor each made fifties but there was little else in support as David Lucas added three more wickets to end with 4 for 39. However, Northamptonshire also suffered from a batting wobble and were reduced to 102 for 5 chasing 371 before Andrew Hall (50*) and David Willey (43*) stiffened their resolve with an unbeaten sixth-wicket stand of 98. The match is wide open with one day to go.Middlesex were able to enforce the follow-on against Leicestershire at Southgate but found the visitors harder to break down for a second time. Boeta Dippenaar led the defiance as he moved to 85, adding an unbroken 96 for the third wicket with fellow South Africa, HD Ackerman. Dippenaar had earlier put on 79 with Tom New after Matthew Boyce was trapped leg-before early on by Tim Murtagh. The Middlesex attack had done an efficient job of wrapping up Leicestershire’s first innings after Alan Richardson removed Josh Cobb for 60. James Taylor’s 69-ball nine was cut off by Murtagh and Dawid Malan’s part-time legspin claimed two lower-order scalps. There was no play between Glamorgan and Derbyshire at Cardiff due to rain.

Division One

2nd dayAdam Voges was the cornerstone of the Nottinghamshire batting with 95 as the battled hard to build a lead of over Lancashire at Old Trafford. Rain and bad light cut into the second day and for much of the time available it was closely-fought battle. Oliver Newby and Glen Chapple struck during the morning session to keep Lancashire in the game, but Voges began to take control. He lost Ali Brown for 21 before adding 67 with Chris Read and was approaching his century when, for the second time in a week, was cut-off short when Newby trapped him lbw. Graeme Swann bagged a duck and Lancashire had hopes of wrapping up the tail, but Read’s good form continued as he and Paul Franks batted through to the early close on 263 for 6.Rain washed out any chance of play at The Rose Bowl between Hampshire and Sussex.3rd dayFor a full report from the third day between Somerset and Durham at Taunton click here. For a full report from the third day between Yorkshire and Worcestershire at Headingley click here.

Ex-West Brom player says Matt Clarke update is a sigh of relief

Matt Clarke returning from injury sooner than expected is a sigh of relief, former West Brom midfielder Carlton Palmer has told Football FanCast.

Clarke had looked like he would be out for a while after straining his hamstring, but manager Valerien Ismael recently confirmed that the central defender could return earlier than anticipated.

The Frenchman has been handed some dilemmas at the back in this early stage of the season, with Dara O’Shea also currently out injured.

The 22-year-old has been ruled out of action for the next four to six months after fracturing his ankle while on international duty, making Clarke’s speedy recovery more than a welcome sight.

Asked by FFC if the news surrounding Clarke will come as a sigh of relief to Ismael following O’Shea’s serious injury, Palmer said:

“Yeah, it is because obviously the backbone of your side is always your defence and to have two key players missing from the start of the season, two key centre-backs… you don’t want them missing for a large chunk of the season.

“That’s your backbone of anything, keeping clean sheets, not conceding goals – and to get good central defenders now is tough.”

West Brom were also without new signing Kean Bryan for their recent clash against Derby County, so the Baggies certainly are having a hard time at the back.

Steve Waugh joins Hall of Fame

Steve Waugh will become the youngest man in the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame when he is inducted on Tuesday, less than a month after he passed the minimum requirement of being out of the game for five years. At the MCG on Monday, Waugh was announced as the 30th member of the body and said it was fitting to speak of the honour at the place where he played his first Test in 1985-86.”It’s nice to be here at the MCG,” Waugh said. “That’s where it started 20-odd years ago. Walking out to bat for that first time, I was just happy to play one Test. To be here today to be inducted in the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame is quite amazing when I look back on it.”Waugh, 43, went on to play a world-record 168 Tests – a mark that still stands – and he is fourth on the Test run tally with 10,927. Waugh is also the most successful Test captain of all men who led their side in at least 20 matches, with a winning ratio of 71.92% from his 57 Tests in charge from 1999 to 2004.The success later in Waugh’s career was a significant change from when he first appeared in the Australian side at the age of 20. At that time, the team was struggling in the years following the retirements of key players and also lost members who were suspended due to the rebel tours of South Africa.”I feel fortunate I’ve played in a couple of different eras,” Waugh said. “One where we’re rebuilding the side in the mid-80s and I guess we took over as the dominant side after we beat the Windies in ’95. I was lucky that I was part of two very different eras, I learnt a lot of lessons along the way.”What I used to judge myself on was coming back from adversity. That’s what most players really pride themselves on. It’s not so much the good times – you’re going to have some of those and it’s quite easy to do things well when things are going smoothly – but when there’s a few spanners in the works, they’re the real times when you test yourself.”Waugh, whose final Test was in January 2004, will join one of his team-mates from the same era, Ian Healy, in the Hall of Fame after the wicketkeeper was inducted last year. Players are selected for their status as “sporting legends” as well as their outstanding records.Waugh will officially receive the honour at the Allan Border Medal presentation in Melbourne on Tuesday. David Norris urges Leeds to make late swoop for Divock Origi

David Norris has called for Leeds United to tempt Liverpool outcast Divock Origi to Elland Road on transfer deadline day.

The Whites have gone into the final day of the window having welcomed two fresh faces to Yorkshire, with Junior Firpo completing a £13million switch from Spanish giants Barcelona and Valerenga goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson making the move.

Jack Harrison has also joined on a permanent basis following a succession of loan spells from Manchester City.

But Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa may make a late move for a striker who could provide competition for Patrick Bamford, with former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips suggesting Origi should be on the Argentinian’s radar.

The speculation comes after it was reported that Liverpool would allow the Belgium international to leave Anfield if a bid between £15million and £20million were to be lodged.

Origi, 26, has yet to make an appearance this season and former Leeds midfielder Norris believes Elland Road could be the perfect destination for the 6 ft 1 attacker.

He exclusively told Football FanCast: “I think it would be a good fit and I would like that to go through.

“He’s not going to play regularly at Liverpool and, if he has that ambition of playing regular football, now is the time to go.

“I think the attributes he has and the players Leeds have would make it a good signing.”

West Ham set sights on Lewis Leigh

According to a West Ham United source, speaking to Football Insider, the club and GSB have set sights on Preston North End starlet Lewis Leigh.

The Lowdown: West Ham academy booming…

After superstar Declan Rice emerged through the Irons’ academy, there has been no shortage of young talent following in his footsteps.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-2/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The likes of Conor Coventry, Ademipo Odubeko, Jamal Baptiste and Emmanuel Longelo have all been nurtured, while West Ham also brought in a plethora of talent from elsewhere over the summer.

Indeed, the club signed promising young starlets Armstrong Oko-Flex, Pierre Ekwah Elimby and Thierry Nevers, with news now emerging about yet another talented target.

The Latest: GSB now eyeing Leigh…

As per Football Insider, sharing information from a club source, West Ham have ‘set their sights’ on Preston hotshot Leigh following his performances for the Championship side’s youth setup.

Rush Green scouts have apparently been ‘hugely impressed’ by the midfielder and are set to keep further tabs in the coming months.

However, while West Ham are very keen, they are not the only club keeping close watch as Premier League rivals Everton also hold an interest.

Despite only just signing his first professional deal until 2024 last month, Leigh is already a wanted man at West Ham and has been on the fringes of Preston’s first team squad without yet being given a senior debut.

The Verdict: Carry on…

Following on from their astute transfer window business regarding young talent spotting, it appears that West Ham scouts are showing no sign of stopping.

This could be great news for the club over these next few years, and in particular for manager David Moyes, who is looking to not only restructure his first team but the academy as well.

Contra o São Paulo, Vitória tenta superar fase ruim no Brasileirão

Arsenal: Leno was shocking v Brentford

Arsenal endured a nightmare opening day of the Premier League season on Friday night as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Brentford.

Mikel Arteta’s side were bullied all over the pitch by the Bees, as goals from Sergi Canos and Christian Norgaard were enough to consign the Gunners to a humiliating loss.

While Pablo Mari at the heart of defence had a particularly difficult night, goalkeeper Bernd Leno must shoulder a large part of the blame for the result too.

Reports in recent weeks of course have suggested that the Gunners have been eyeing a move for Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale as they look for competition for their number one, and on this evidence it’s imperative that they do something about the goalkeeping position sooner rather than later.

Leno looked all at sea with Brentford’s set-pieces, whether that was via corners or the Bees’ long throw-ins. One corner saw him rushing out of his goal only to completely flap at the ball and watch it narrowly miss going in at the far post.

The German was then beaten far too cheaply for Brentford’s second, being pinned in by Pontus Jansson – perhaps illegally – and failing to deal with it more commandingly.

Speaking after the second goal went in, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher ripped into Arsenal’s defending, slamming: “How do you describe Arsenal there? It’s just Arsenal. Weak, bullied, men against boys again. New season, same old story: don’t win the first one, let it bounce, two Brentford players get out the way, 2-0.”

As per Sofascore, Leno lost 100% of his duels, while his distribution was shocking to say the least – he completed just 77% of his passes and didn’t have the confidence or even the ability to trust his feet when it came to beating Brentford’s press, instead choosing to go long rather frustratingly (12 long balls).

Writing in his player ratings for The Daily Mirror, Sam Elliott-Gibbs said: “Get Aaron Ramsdale on the phone. Beaten at his near post, didn’t dominate his box and then an almighty flap from a corner. Painful.”

Given that Arteta put out a mostly young, inexperienced team, he needed his more seasoned players to stand up and be counted in a deafening atmosphere in west London.

Instead, Leno once again raised questions of whether he is good enough to be Arsenal’s number one with a display which embarrassed himself, his manager and his club.

Meanwhile, David Ornstein dropped an Arsenal update on Lautaro Martinez…
