Graeme Smith has announced he will retire from international cricket at the conclusion of the final Test against Australia in Cape Town.Smith, 33, is playing his 117th Test match – 109 of which have been as captain, a world record – and currently stands on 9257 runs. He revealed the news to his team-mates after the third day’s play at Newlands. He said finishing on his home ground felt like the perfect ending and that it was something he had been considering since ankle surgery last year.”This has been the most difficult decision I have ever had to make in my life,” he said. “It’s a decision that I have been considering since my ankle surgery in April last year. I have a young family to consider, and I felt that retiring at Newlands would be the best way to end it because I have called this place home since I was 18 years-old.”I have always been someone who has left everything out there on the field for my team and for my country. I’m extremely honoured and proud to have had the privilege to lead so many wonderful players and to have been a part of building the Proteas culture to what it is today. It is a culture that every player can be, and is, immensely proud of.”In the current series, with one innings remaining, Smith has made just 42 runs and has been troubled particularly by Mitchell Johnson. He has not scored a half-century for eight innings – although did make 234 against Pakistan in October – and if South Africa lose against Australia it will be their first series loss since 2008-09. There were rumours before the India series late last year that Smith, who took on the captaincy in 2003, threatened to resign over selection issues. His statement continued: “I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the support from my parents and brother, my wife and children, my friends, my sponsors, my fans and to Cricket South Africa. I thank and honour the players who I have played with and those who have supported me and helped me to be the person and captain I am today.”I have been fortunate to have had many highs, amongst them leading and being part of the best Test team in the world. I will cherish these memories for the rest of my life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I bid my career a fond yet sad farewell.”One of many of the notable statistics in Smith’s career is that none of his 27th Test hundreds have come in a defeat. Stand-out performances that he will be remembered for include back-to-back double hundreds against England in 2003, his series-winning innings at Edgbaston in 2008, captaining South Africa to a series with in Australia, during which he came out to bat with a broken hand in Sydney, and maintaining South Africa’s formidable record on the subcontinent.Smith’s retirement follows quickly on from that of Jacques Kallis who quit Test cricket at the end of last year, although Kallis is aiming to extend his ODI career to take part in the World Cup. Smith’s one-day career had appeared to be on the wane when he was dropped after last year’s series against Pakistan in the UAE; in 197 ODIs he scored 6989 runs at 37.98 with 10 hundreds. One of the impacts of Smith’s retirement is that he will now be able to play for Surrey as a non-overseas player due to his Irish citizenship. The first year of his deal was cut short by his need for ankle surgery. When he signed his contract with Surrey there were suggestions at the time that he could end his South Africa career there and then.Haroon Lorgat, the Cricket South Africa chief executive, admitted Smith’s decision had come as a shock and praised his “nerves of steel”.”Although Graeme’s decision to retire from all forms of international cricket comes as a surprise to all of us, we must respect him for deciding to call time,” he said. “Knowing him as well as I do, having been instrumental as a selector in appointing him as a young captain, he would not have taken this decision lightly or without a great deal of thought.”He has captained the Proteas for more than a decade and he will draw a lot more satisfaction from the fact that he leaves our Test team at the top of the world and in such good health rather than from all the personal records he has achieved as the longest-serving captain the game has ever seen in the demanding Test format.”I would like us to remember Graeme for his nerves of steel and his match-winning performances that were synonymous with some of the most remarkable fourth innings victory chases of all time. These included setting up the 414 runs chase against Australia at Perth and his series-clinching innings at Edgbaston in 2008, not to mention the unbeaten century the last time he faced Australia at Newlands in 2011. His role in setting up the famous 438 win over Australia in 2006 was also a performance never to be forgotten.”He can leave the game with pride and he thoroughly deserves the gratitude of our nation for leading the Proteas with much distinction. From a personal point of view I am thrilled that I was part of the panel that appointed him captain in 2003 when his first major assignment was a tough tour to England and I feel privileged to see him now move on to the next stage of his career. He has been a mighty warrior, a leader of men and an exceptional part of our international cricket.”

West Indies U-19 crash to big defeat

West Indies Under-19 crumbled against spin bowling to crash to a 198-run defeat against Bangladesh Under-19 in the Youth ODI series in Guyana

ScorecardJubair Hossain’s late hat-trick sealed the win for Bangladesh Under-19s•WICB MediaWest Indies Under-19 crumbled against spin bowling to crash to a 198-run defeat against Bangladesh Under-19 in the Youth ODI series in Guyana. Chasing 287, a middle-order collapse saw West Indies reach only 88, giving Bangladesh a 2-1 lead in the seven-match series.West Indies began their chase steadily as openers Leroy Lugg and Jeremy Solozano added 39 runs. However, offspinner Mehedy Hassan and left-arm spinners Nihaduzzaman and Rahatul Ferdous dismissed the West Indies top order in the space of three overs to leave the batting side tottering at 44 for 3. Fabian Allen and wicketkeeper Shimron Hetmyre had a brief partnership of 24 runs, but once Hetmyre fell to Nihaduzzaman, West Indies slid from 68 for 4 to 88 all out in just 13 deliveries. Legspinner Jubair Hossain picked up a hat-trick, dismissing Jofra Archer, Jerome Jones and Bryan Charles for ducks. He finished with figures of 3 for 7 off two overs, with Ferdous also taking three.Earlier, Shadman Islam anchored the Bangladesh innings with a solid 95, after his side chose to bat. Shadman lost his opening partner, Munim Shahriar, early but combined with wicketkeeper Jashimuddin to add 116 runs for the second wicket. Jashimuddin scored 68 off 92 balls with six fours before he was dismissed by Taryck Gabriel. Shadman then added another 60 runs with Mossadek Hossain, and was also involved in useful partnerships with Nazmul Hussain Shanto and Mehedy Hasan, which helped consolidate Bangladesh’s score. Although the side lost three quick wickets towards the end, Shadman’s knock had ensured the side reached a strong 286 for 8.

England complete crushing four-day win

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsJoe Root struck twice before tea adding to his memorable Test after his 180•AFP

England secured a 2-0 lead in the Investec Ashes series as they completed an inevitable victory against Australia with relentless efficiency at the fag-end of the fourth day at Lord’s. Australia were four balls away from taking the match into a fifth day, with England forced to take a second new ball, the extra half-hour and finally resorting to silent prayer before completing a 347-run win in the final over. Before an impatient Lord’s crowd, eager to tick a box marked victory and head home, Australia’s last pair, James Pattinson and Ryan Harris, established Australia’s second highest stand of the innings – 43 runs awash with defiance – before the offspin of Graeme Swann trapped Pattinson lbw.At Trent Bridge, Ashton Agar and Phil Hughes registered the highest last-wicket partnership in Test history, and Australia’s highest of the match. If only the batsmen could bat, they might make a fist of this series. But Australia have lost six Tests in a row. England are vastly superior. It all feels like a reverse of 20 years ago. England are now the side in a golden era, able to relish high-class players and sound planning; Australia are a basket case.Returning on Monday morning might have been a suitable mini-punishment for England after they self-indulgently batted on for 18 minutes on the fourth morning in a failed attempt to present Joe Root with a double century. He fell attempting a ramp shot with nine men on the boundary, leaving Ryan Harris with praiseworthy match figures of 7 for 103. Aside from his wonderful innings, the manner of Root’s dismissal was unique for an Ashes Test and is perhaps worthy of an Honours Board on its own.England have four Ashes victories in a row, the strategy of dry pitches is working like a dream and Root’s 180 emphasised the gulf between the sides. The youngest English player to make a Test hundred at Lord’s, unsurprisingly he took the man-of-the-match award. “I’ve loved every minute of it,” he said. They made skilful use of a wearing Lord’s surface, with Swann predictably to the fore, and with Root also making a cheery guest appearance to break the back of the Australia innings just before tea. Australia will be particularly disturbed that they have completed back-to-back wins without major contributions from the likes of Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen.Australia have only straws to clutch at – Usman Khawaja acquitted himself responsibly at No. 3 to make his second Test half-century and their bowlers are displaying commendable spirit with both bat and ball – but only one side in Ashes history has ever won a series 3-2 after losing the first two Tests. England can surely assume the Ashes are as good as retained.Only one Test side, also, has ever survived for 173 overs or more in the fourth innings to draw a match. That was England against South Africa in Durban in 1939 when a Timeless Test was abandoned after nine days so England could catch a boat home. Australia’s task was to show they were not on a slow boat to nowhere, to transform a humiliation into a defeat respectable enough to keep body and soul together for the rest of the series. That task will be made more difficult while the air remains thick with corporate emails. As Australia’s players sought consolation in another defeat, Cricket Australia and their sacked coach, Micky Arthur, exchanged public statements and David Warner’s manager felt obliged to distance Warner from his own brother after he made venomous comments about Shane Watson. It cannot get much worse.Australia, bundled out for 128 first time around, were in disarray at 48 for 3 at lunch as they faced an entirely notional 583 to win. Swann led England’s victory push. Expectation of turn was enough to befuddle Rogers, who left a straight one, and Hughes, who reviewed his lbw decision, only to be reminded that, in these days of DRS, lbws are possible for offspinners operating around the wicket even if they do not straighten the ball. Before then, Watson fell in accustomed manner, lbw, this time hunted down by James Anderson. It was not the embarrassing exit of the first innings, when he planted his front pad and whipped across one and then compounded the error by wasting a review when stone dead. This time he was more respectably beaten by a ball that nipped back and, aware that there was no chance of a reprieve, shook his head mournfully at his batting partner, Rogers, and walked off.Clarke, coming in at No 5, faced a familiar story: 36 for 3. The cricketing argument for him to bat at No. 4 is offset by the statistical evidence that when he does so it halves his average. He might have departed before lunch, too, when he came down the pitch to Swann, was beaten on the outside edge by one that did not turn, only for Matt Prior, equally deceived, to miss the stumping.Root’s memorable Lord’s Test continued apace when he conjured up the wickets of Clarke and Khawaja shortly before tea, breaking their composed 98-run stand in a spell of 7-3-9-2. Clarke, Khawaja and Steve Smith all fell within the space of 21 deliveries.Root, encouraging hopes that he could develop into the fifth bowler England need on spin-friendly surfaces, found extravagant turn out of the rough to dismiss Clarke, but his dismissal was a soft one as he tickled a ball down the leg side to be caught by Alastair Cook at leg slip. Khawaja put up staunch resistance but followed in Root’s next over when he pushed at a ball that turned and edged gently to James Anderson at gully.Nevertheless, there was enough in Khawaja’s approach to suggest that he intends to battle for the right to become Australia’s long-term No. 3. He carried the fight against some short bowling from Stuart Broad immediately after lunch, in contrast to Clarke, who was struck on the shoulder and helmet in quick succession by the same bowler. He also blocked Swann out of the footholds with determination.Swann was a touch hampered by a lower-back injury, caused when Khawaja accidentally collided with him when dashing a single to the bowler’s end, and although he regularly found pronounced turn out of the footholds, with the ball travelling more than once straight to slip or gully, he required painkillers and after 17 overs eventually gave way to Root.Smith’s departure to the last ball before tea – the batsman unsuccessfully reviewing after he had been caught at the wicket off a thin inside nick against Tim Bresnan – completed a deflating end to the session after Australia’s top-order batsmen had shown as much application as at any time in the series.Australia’s frustrations were compounded by further issues over DRS after tea. Brad Haddin was adjudged lbw to Swann as he padded up to one that turned from around the wicket and then Agar’s brief cut and thrust through point – the area where he lives or dies – was silenced when England successfully turned to the review system to win a catch at the wicket off Bresnan. The TV umpire, Tony Hill, upheld it on noise (and Snicko supported him) but there was no mark on Hot Spot, inviting more grumbles from traditionalists wedded to a simpler time when an on-field umpire’s decision was law. Simpler times have gone for ever. And, in Australian cricket, there are more pressing things to carp about.

James Fuller five-for seals revitalising Hampshire win

Warwickshire fall short in fourth innings as visitors wrap up three-day success

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay18-May-2025Hampshire hit back from last week’s thrashing by Nottinghamshire in emphatic style with an 89-run Rothesay County Championship win over Warwickshire inside three days at Edgbaston.Set a target of 310, Warwickshire were all out for 220, unpicked by seamers James Fuller and Kyle Abbott. Alex Davies, with 66 from 106 balls, and Ethan Bamber (43) offered some resistance but the rest were blown away by a Hampshire side resurgent after their surrender at Trent Bridge.Hampshire’s second innings had closed in the morning on 203. Beau Webster took 4 for 57 and Bamber 4 for 60 but the match was decided by the visitors outbowling their hosts on a pitch which offered encouragement to seamers throughout. After Hampshire resumed on 159 for 6, already 275 ahead, Bamber quickly struck twice when Brad Wheal edged to second slip and Fuller’s middle-stump was sent flying by an inside-edged slog. Abbott pulled Bamber for six in a handy run-a-ball stand of 32 with Toby Albert before Webster had Albert and John Turner caught behind in three balls.A target of 310 offered an intriguing last chapter to an engrossing match and Warwickshire’s chase began spectacularly. They were 10 for 2 after three overs after Abbott hit Rob Yates’ off stump, Davies struck his first two balls for four and Tom Latham edged Abbott to wicketkeeper Ben Brown.Unfazed by the rocky start, Davies and Sam Hain added 68 in 24 overs. Hain looked in excellent form on his way to 30 but his season’s story so far of getting in then getting out continued when he offered no shot to an Abbott in-ducker and was lbw.Davies reached a 66-ball half-century but was among the casualties as Fuller unleashed a ferocious spell from the Pavilion End, ripping out 3 for 3 in 12 balls. Webster and Davies were trapped in front by balls that kept low, either side of Ed Barnard tickling an outswinger to the keeper. At 126 for 6, Warwickshire needed something special from their lower order on a pitch which had yielded just one half-century in each innings. It was understandably beyond them. Zen Malik hoisted Turner to fine leg. Bamber and Che Simmons fought hard to add 43 in 17 overs before Fuller returned to complete his five-for by removing both. Bamber edged behind, Simmons lofted to long leg and when Turner flattened Olly Hannon-Dalby’s off-stump, Hampshire’s reassertion of their qualities was complete.

Ben Brown extends purple patch to keep Sussex fighting in basement battle

Removed from captaincy in midsummer, Brown strums unbeaten 150 to lead recovery

ECB Reporters Network22-Sep-2021Ben Brown scored another century for Sussex to save his side from total collapse against Derbyshire in the LV= Insurance County Championship. It was his second in as many matches, his fourth of the season and the 22nd of his career and it led Sussex to a score of 255 for 5 at the end of the second day as he continued his fine run of form after being removed from the captaincy earlier in the summer. They still trail Derbyshire by 210 runs at the 1st Central County Ground.Sussex, chasing 316 merely to avoid the follow-on, got off to the worst possible start against an impressive Derbyshire attack when the normally adhesive Ali Orr was out first ball. Playing at a wide delivery he should have left alone, with only two overs to be bowled before lunch, he wafted at it and was caught behind by Brooke Guest.Related

Captain and star batter Tom Haines was second out at 36, swinging at a legside delivery from Dustin Melton to give Guest another catch. Danial Ibrahim made just one before he edged the formidable Ben Aitchson to Wayne Madsen at second slip, and Aitchson struck again in his next over when he caught Harrison Ward bang in front of stumps for a duck.At that stage Sussex were 46 for 4 and being outplayed by Derbyshire in the battle to avoid the County Championship’s wooden spoon. But Brown, watched by his parents, and fellow wicketkeeper Oliver Carter then put on 142 for the fifth wicket in 40 overs. Carter scored his maiden first-class fifty, though he was out shortly afterwards, caught on the square-leg boundary for 51, and Melton made it two wickets in five balls when he dismissed the wretchedly out-of-form Delray Rawlins, caught and bowled for a duck off a leading edge. But Brown, who reached his hundred from 134 balls with 14 fours, went on to reach 150 not out.Derbyshire had resumed on 371 for 5 and they lost their sixth wicket to the third ball of the morning. Guest had not added to his 30 runs when he was lbw to the lively Jamie Atkins. There followed a brisk seventh wicket partnership of 54 between Anuj Dal and Mattie McKiernan, who played a number of handsome strokes before he was caught behind to a delivery from Sean Hunt that surprised him with its bounce.Aitchison, driving, was caught by Brown at first slip and then Melton was well taken by Ibrahim at deep backward square-leg. Finally, Ed Moulton gave Brown his second catch at first slip after it was parried by second slip. Both Atkins and Henry Crocombe finished with four wickets. The Derbyshire total of 465 included 57 extras.
