Tottenham expect Levy to sanction Alli sale

Speaking to Football Insider, a Tottenham Hotspur source has explained that there is a feeling ‘at the top of the club’ that chairman Daniel Levy could now sanction a discounted sale for big name Dele Alli at the end of the season – despite previously being prepared to ride out his poor patch.

Indeed, as per this report, Tottenham will more than likely work on a £25 million exit for the Englishman barring an upturn in form – coming after Levy apparently thought Spurs were well placed to keep faith due to the fact he is contracted until 2024 with his best years still ahead of him.

Tottenham U-turn on Alli

As explained by Football Insider, the Lilywhites chairman ‘upset’ manager Jose Mourinho by blocking Alli’s loan move to Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain – with financial reasons touted as the reason Levy refused to agree a deal.

Extensive discussions were held with PSG over the switch, but no agreement came to pass, with the 24-year-old remaining at Tottenham.

Now, a source close to the club has told Football Insider there is a feeling at the very top Levy is prepared to sanction a near half-price £25m exit for him in the summer transfer window – coming down from his previous asking price of £45m.

If Alli does leave the club for that amount, it’s safe to say it wouldn’t exactly be the fairy tale ending for his north London career after a promising start to life.

Transfer Tavern take

He was heralded by previous boss Mauricio Pochettino, with the Argentine even calling him a ‘beast’ (Sky Sports), but he hasn’t earned the same favour from Mourinho.

Levy was apparently prepared to ride out his slump, however, feelings now coming out of the club may indicate the chairman is willing to perform a drastic U-turn.

West Ham eye Lazio’s Strakosha

West Ham United have landed a dream opportunity to sign SS Lazio goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha and seal their long-term heir to Lukasz Fabianski.

What’s the word?

According to La Lazio Siamo Noi, Strakosha faces an uncertain future at the Stadio Olimpico after losing his place in Simone Inzaghi’s side to veteran shot-stopper Pepe Reina.

Strakosha is currently due to be out of contract in 2022 but talks over a new deal were put on hold due to the events of the season, after discussions were opened almost a year ago.

The Albanian goalie, for his part, would like to see his future resolved and understand to what degree Lazio still believe in him, otherwise, he will hand in a transfer request this summer.

Strakosha has told Sky Italia, via Cittaceleste, of his willingness to leave the side where he made a name for himself, too, with Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund a potential destination.

“I am open to new challenges. Rome is like a second home for me, but the Bundesliga is a very interesting league. It could be a great step in my career. Borussia Dortmund? It is a great club with great ambitions. I’d be lying if I said I’m not interested,” he said.

West Ham have also been credited with an interest in Strakosha previously, with reports by Calciomercato claiming the Irons approached Lazio to discuss a deal during in the recent winter window.

Strakosha had lost the number one jersey earlier in the campaign, after testing positive for coronavirus and was later sidelined after developing a knee injury. Reina performed well as the stand-in for many games, but has suffered a recent drop off in form.

Inzaghi is now expected to make a change in goal for Friday night’s clash with FC Crotone after a string of impressive performances in training from Strakosha, in what will be a crucial period for the 25-year-old’s future at the Serie A side.

Should West Ham sign Strakosha?

West Ham have been linked with a myriad of potential goalkeepers of late, with Manchester United’s Dean Henderson, Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale and Leeds United’s Illan Meslier among those touted amid uncertainty about Fabianski’s future at the London Stadium.

That speculation may now end with the Irons announcing on Wednesday that Fabianski has signed a one-year contract extension to stay at the club until the summer of 2022, yet his new deal should not stop David Moyes from securing a long-term heir to the Poland international.

Fabianski’s long-term future remains a doubt with the shot-stopper turning 36 next month and with his new terms lasting only for a further 12-months, West Ham will be in the same boat next year.

That is unless they look to land his replacement this summer when Strakosha may be available, in a potential dream scenario for the Irons given Lazio valued the Albanian as highly as €40m (£34m) back in 2019 amid widespread interest.

It was thought the 25-year-old was being lined up as Hugo Lloris’ replacement at Tottenham Hotspur, and Spurs again showed an interest last summer alongside Leicester City. He also snubbed a €30m (£25.5m) move to Liverpool the year before when Jurgen Klopp eventually brought in Allison Becker for £67m.

Lazio’s current valuation would be expected to be significantly lower given Strakosha’s often understudy status when fit, with just six Serie A appearances to his name this term. And Moyes should still explore a deal, despite Fabianski’s new contract.

Liverpool fans react to key Keita news

Some Liverpool supporters are concerned about Naby Keita representing Guinea during the international break, due to his recent injury record.

The 26-year-old has had a frustrating Reds career to date, never quite managing to hit the heights many expected of him when he arrived.

Keita joined from RB Leipzig back in the summer of 2018 – he actually signed the previous year – with many expecting him to become Liverpool’s star midfielder.

It hasn’t quite worked out that way, however, with the Guinean falling behind the likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum in the pecking order.

[freshpress-poll id=“348883″]

While Keita’s performances haven’t always been up to the required standard, injuries are the main thing that have held him back, with constant absences from the team allowing him no rhythm.

When fit, he is an effective player who has proven his worth many times for Liverpool, but his inability to stay injury-free is a stumbling block.

According to RTE, Guinea’s national team have persuaded the Reds to allow Keita to face Mali next Wednesday, sending him back to Merseyside straight after the game.

James Pearce questions Klopp decision

Liverpool lost their second home game in a row with their 1-0 defeat to Brighton on Wednesday night.

Steven Alzate scored the only goal of the game for the visitors in what was a shock win, but very much deserved, as the Reds suffered another hit in the Premier League title race.

There has been plenty of talk about the Reds’ injuries, but The Athletic’s James Pearce had a bone to pick with Jurgen Klopp regarding his decisions from who was available for the game.

Pearce gives honest verdict

The German tactician opted to go for a midfield three that consisted of Thiago Alcantara, James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum, leaving out Curtis Jones, who had put in a fine showing against West Ham United.

Replying to a fan during a Q&A session, Pearce could not understand why Jones didn’t start the game.

He said: “Not sure about [Ben] Davies as he’s only just in the door but Jones should have started. It was so flat and I’m sure fatigue played a part in that.”

Transfer Tavern Verdict

It’s a fair point to raise from Pearce, considering how Jones changed the game almost immediately at the London Stadium.

But Klopp did highlight fatigue as one of the factors of the defeat – which could also be an indication why the Melwood graduate didn’t feature in the initial eleven.

Even after Jones came on – he could not make an impact due to how well Graham Potter had set up his Brighton side. Whether he will get an opportunity from the start against Manchester City remains to be seen.

Spurs can find next Alli in Todd Cantwell

Tottenham Hotspur are one of the teams pondering a move for Norwich City midfielder Todd Cantwell, according to reports…

What’s the word?

Football League World sources have claimed that Spurs are monitoring the 22-year-old playmaker ahead of a potential swoop this summer, while Premier League rivals Leicester City have also been named as possible suitors.

It’s thought that the Canaries are bracing themselves for bids over a number of their key stars, including Cantwell, though the north London outfit are wanting to avoid a bidding war over the England U21 international.

The Championship outfit do not want to sell either, but their hand may be forced should they fail to secure an instant return back to the top-flight.

Dele Alli 2.0?

Spurs are going to see first-hand how Cantwell performs over the next few months as they will also be looking at the progress of their on-loan midfielder, Oliver Skipp.

They have also had success in finding gems from the lower echelons of the Football League, more recently Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham, who has been touted for big things one day and of course, Dele Alli, who they prised from MK Dons for only £5m some six years ago.

Interestingly, Cantwell has been likened to the 24-year-old attacking midfielder after being dubbed the ‘East Anglian Alli’ by the Sportsman, who wrote: ‘There is also an element of Dele Alli to the way Cantwell plays, with the Norwich City man often breaking beyond the central striker.’

Perhaps a move for the Canaries’ talisman means they could seal their next Alli, especially as he’s been linked with an exit to Paris Saint-Germain in recent weeks, so his likely void will need to be fulfilled at some point.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-and-rumours” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours, injury latest and more!”]

Cantwell’s former coach Gary Cockaday noticed his ability from a young age, he told The Athletic: “He did things every week that were just special. It was God-given. No one taught it.”

Indeed, the midfielder impressed in his first shot at the big time, even despite Norwich being relegated.

He recorded six goals and two assists from 37 appearances, and ranked joint-second for shots per game (1.1), behind only striker Teemu Pukki. He also did a lot off the ball, managing an average of 1.4 tackles per game, via WhoScored.

Cantwell even gave one of Spurs’ current players the run around that campaign. Despite the defeat, the Norwich sensation had the better of Matt Doherty in their game at Wolves. He was absolutely terrorised.

Per SofaScore, the Englishman was Daniel Farke’s second-best player (7.2 rating) and aside from beating the right wing-back to score, he also won five duels, made three tackles and had 55 touches. By comparison, the Irishman (6.6) managed to pick up a yellow card and won only 45% of his duels.

In the Championship this term, he has continued that remarkable form, ranking as the Canaries’ third-best player with a WhoScored rating of 7.04 – only bettered by Emi Buendia and Grant Hanley, who have both started double the number of games.

Four goal contributions in 11 starts are noble returns thus far and given he’s only 22, he looks primed to improve on that going forward.

Also dubbed one of the “most gifted” in the academy set-up from an early age by Darren Huckerby, the £15.3m-rated gem would evidently be a fine addition and a like-for-like heir to Alli.

It remains to be seen how much a young talent like Cantwell would command; reports in the summer suggested Norwich had an asking price in the region of £25m, which in this day and age is probably fair for an English diamond.

If Daniel Levy can afford to this summer, he’d be a wise man to sanction this move.

AND in other news, Why Jose Mourinho would LOVE reported Spurs target Mikkel Damgaard…

Why Rangers will rue not signing Gilmour

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, former Rangers youngster and reported target Billy Gilmour is staying at Stamford Bridge rather than leaving the club on loan before tonight’s deadline.

Gilmour has long had to grapple with the pressure and hype that comes with being dubbed the “Scottish Iniesta.” However, he has passed each test with flying colours.

Despite his age, the 19-year-old midfielder, who joined Chelsea from Rangers after rejecting an offer to stay at Ibrox, has already made eight top-flight appearances in the Premier League and played two games in the Champions League during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Yet if you cast your mind back to the start of the January transfer window, you will remember he was considering leaving on loan in a bid to get more game time amid interest from Steven Gerrard’s Gers.

footballfancast.com/web-

stories/deadline-day-rangers-

and-more” title=”Deadline day is here: Read the latest Rangers news, transfer rumours and more!”]

The Ibrox boss is a longstanding admirer of the club’s former starlet, who earns around £43,000-per-week at Stamford Bridge, although he publicly insisted that no talks had taken place at the time over a possible move.

Gerrard said: “I think he’s pretty settled at Chelsea. Fabulous little player but there’s been no contact”.

However, The Sun had previously reported that Rangers had indeed made an approach for the teenager midfield dynamo in December last year.

And The Athletic’s David Ornstein claimed it is unlikely he will leave on loan before the transfer window closes tonight despite struggling for game time under Thomas Tuchel with Southampton believed to be among the interested parties. Ornstein has subsequently confirmed that he will stay at Chelsea until the end of the season.

There’s no doubting the fact that this could turn out to be one of Ross Wilson’s biggest regrets in the winter transfer market. Gers boss Gerrard wanted to sign a midfielder during the extended summer transfer window and ultimately got what he wanted in the form of Bafana-Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu on an initial loan deal with the option to buy.

Unfortunately, the move hasn’t quite worked out as he planned, as the South Africa international has struggled to break into Gerrard’s side after a string of poor performances. He has made just one start in 14 appearances across all competitions this season thus far.

Gilmour himself is currently averaging more tackles and more interceptions per match than the South African, as per WhoScored, which suggests that his defensive contributions are greater. In two appearances in the Champions League, he has averaged one shot, one dribble and 1.5 key passes per game, via WhoScored, implying that he could’ve offered an alternative threat in attack as well.

It’s fair to say that the Scotland U21 international could’ve been a game-changer for the Gers as he has shown he can tackle, unlock the sternest of defences with the deftest of touches and bring the ball forward to set his side on the front foot. He could’ve been one of the best loan signings that money can buy in the market this season, that’s for sure.

AND in other news, George Edmundson must use temporary loan move to resurrect Rangers career…

What can Joshua King offer to Leeds?

As far as January transfer windows go, this is a largely uneventful one for Leeds United.

It doesn’t look as though they’ll welcome any fresh faces through the door which given their recent struggles is arguably quite surprising.

The Whites haven’t won or scored a single goal in what has been an arduous 2021 for them so far.

Marcelo Bielsa will need to dig deep and consult his studious brain for an answer to his problems. He hasn’t had many since penning terms at Elland Road in 2018 but he is going through a tough time at the moment.

Could the answer be in a new striker? Quite possibly, although Patrick Bamford is quite clearly the undisputed number one. He has been ever-present in the Premier League, scoring ten goals in the process.

Though, according to Kevin Phillips, Leeds should be interested in Bournemouth forward Josh King. He told Football Insider: “100% Leeds would be interested. If he is made available a lot of teams will be looking at him. Josh King would be a massive addition for Leeds. He is playing regularly now, he is scoring and he is a handful.

“Marcelo Bielsa likes versatile players and King can play across the front line. He is suited best down the middle though with players playing off him. If he became available, I am sure Leeds would be one of the clubs interested in him.”

On the chalkboard

Indeed, it’s hard to argue why this wouldn’t be a good signing for the Yorkshire outfit. He has Premier League experience and crucially, knows how to score top-flight goals.

During his career, the Norwegian has netted 48 in 161 Premier League outings. Though, that isn’t the sole reason why Leeds should sign him this month.

Reportedly available for around the £10m mark, he would offer Leeds something that Bamford doesn’t.

He has become more prolific this season and runs his socks off, relentlessly pressing the defenders. However, when it comes to ball carrying and tricking opponents, Bamford leaves plenty to be desired.

In 2019/20, the forward has registered just 0.5 dribbles per game. For context, that’s the 11th best tally in United’s squad. Bamford’s record in the Championship, meanwhile, was just 0.4 a match. King, on the hand, is streets ahead.

Described as a “complete package” by Eddie Howe, the Cherries striker managed two dribbles per outing in the top-flight last season, amassing a career average of 1.8. That would put him above every player in the Leeds squad in 2020/21.

For further evidence, you only need to compare the number of progressive carries they’ve made towards an opponent’s goal. King made as many as 3.8 per game last term according to FB Ref. Bamford, by comparison, has managed only 1.3 in the Premier League.

Although King provides a wealth of experience and would add undoubted depth to Leeds’ squad, it’s his ability to carry the ball forward and take it past players that stands to attention.

Above all, that is the main reason they must look at signing him this month. Victor Orta would do a grand job by sealing a transfer.

AND in other news, Leeds could find their new Jansson if Orta brings £5.4m-rated colossus to Elland Road…

West Brom: Slaven Bilic must unleash Grady Diangana on Crystal Palace

West Brom go into the weekend’s Premier League fixtures on the back of their first victory of the season last time out, defeating rock-bottom Sheffield United by the solitary goal.

But now they arguably face a bigger ‘six-pointer’ in the shape of Crystal Palace, who currently occupy 15th position.

A defeat at Selhurst Park could compound the Baggies to further woe as they’ll be cut even more adrift from the rest of the pack, thus making the likely relegation dogfight less competitive.

Which is bad news for Albion as there are fewer teams to surpass, making their probability of dropping back to the Championship even more likely.

The Eagles have been in a bit of a rut recently too, losing three of their last four league outings, also failing to score in the trio of defeats too.

Slaven Bilic’s side have faced a similar issue as the only two teams that have scored fewer goals across the first ten weeks of the 2020/21 campaign are below them in the table, the winless Blades and Sean Dyche’s Burnley.

Indeed, their £15m splash on Karlan Grant is yet to bear fruit with the 23-year-old scoring just once in six starts. Perhaps, it’s time for the Croatian to axe him in order to spark a reaction.

It’s a decision he ought to consider, especially with Grady Diangana snubbed from the starting XI in two of their last three matches – he didn’t even feature against Sheffield United, so he should be chomping at the bit to prove a point.

The 22-year-old has been lauded as a “fantastic talent” who “might be worth £40m+” in the future by former Baggies midfielder Carlton Palmer.

Whilst Sky Sports duo Keith Andrews and Lee Hendrie told the EFL podcast that the ex-Hammers enigma was “explosive” and a “total nightmare” to play against.

Diangana delivered eight goals and six assists, also averaging 2.4 dribbles, 1.6 shots and 1.4 key passes per game last season, via WhoScored.

It is this ability that Bilic will need to call upon against Palace, especially if Roy Hodgson opts for Nathaniel Clyne at right-back once again, a player that has barely featured in 2020.

The Croatian can make the former Albion boss pay by axing Grant in favour of the £10.8m-rated Diangana, thus allowing top goalscorer Callum Robinson to play upfront once again.
