Young gun Handscomb looks to bat long

Peter Handscomb chose a career in cricket instead of tennis and the rewards are now coming after his encouraging start to his domestic career

The choice between cricket and football is a common dilemma for young sportsmen. Peter Handscomb had a different decision to make. A talented junior tennis player who was seeded in tournaments that also featured Bernard Tomic, Handscomb had to decide whether to pursue a career on the court or on the pitch.”There was a point in time where I did have to make that decision,” Handscomb told ESPNcricinfo. “But it didn’t turn out to be that hard. I could see that cricket was more of a chance, especially because tennis is such an expensive game to get in to. Travelling the world would have been quite hard.”And now the rewards for choosing cricket have started to arrive. It has been a big month for Handscomb, 20. A fortnight ago, he made his first-class debut for Victoria and compiled a patient, mature 71, and he followed that last week with a magnificent double-century in a second XI match against New South Wales. Now, he’s retained his spot for the Sheffield Shield outing against the Blues, despite the return of David Hussey and Aaron Finch from international duties. That alone is a win for Handscomb, who earned his first rookie contract with Victoria this year but expected to spend the summer watching the Bushrangers from the sidelines.”I just want to hold my spot for as long as I can,” Handscomb said. “I didn’t expect to play a game let alone start the season in the team, so anything from here on in is really a bonus. But my goals have changed and I want to stay in for as long as I can.”To stay in as long as he can is Handscomb’s goal not only in the team environment, but in every innings he plays. An opener with the successful St Kilda club in Melbourne’s grade competition, Handscomb has learnt the art of batting long from his club captain Graeme Rummans, and the work paid off when he made 233 in last week’s second XI game.”I spoke to Rummo about getting my head right and the mental side of it,” Handscomb said. “It’s about not really being satisfied with making 70s or 80s, or if you get to a hundred, not being satisfied with just a hundred.”It helped that Handscomb spent the winter playing club cricket in England, where he was also picked for the Leicestershire Second XI and promptly made 117 opening the innings in his first game. But despite holding a British passport – he was born in Australia to English parents – Handscomb’s loyalties are firmly with Australia. And after playing for Australia’s Under-19s two years ago, Handscomb’s opportunity at state level finally arrived this month, after he scored a century in a ‘probables versus possibles’ state squad match before the start of the season. When he stepped up on an early-season Gabba pitch Handscomb, who concedes he is “definitely no big fence-clearer”, had to rein in his strokeplay even further.”I’d spoken to Shippy [coach Greg Shipperd] beforehand and we’d chatted about how to play on that pitch, what shots to play and what ones not to,” he said. “It just turned out that a few of my shots I had to really rein in. It was a conscious effort really to survive and stay in.”He did just that. Now his next task is to stay in the Victorian side when the captain Cameron White returns. Whatever happens, Handscomb is pleased to have made a promising start to his career.”Cricket is one of those games where it won’t take much to go the other way,” he said. “Hopefully I can keep it going as long as I can.”

England pair Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann shared four wickets on their return to county duty as Nottinghamshire fought back to dismiss Sussex for 304 on the first day of the County Championship match at Hove. Sussex looked like making the most of winning the toss when openers Ed Joyce and Chris Nash posted their third century stand of the season. But Sussex were never the same after Joyce and Luke Wells fell just before lunch.A dry pitch is already turning, albeit slowly, and five of the wickets fell to spin. Swann removed Joyce with his 10th delivery while Samit Patel finished with 3 for 37 including skipper Mike Yardy and Nash, who passed 50 for the fifth time this season without converting it into a hundred.Nash and Joyce scored at five-an-over for most of the morning session with Nash, who raced to 50 off 35 balls, taking full advantage of some wayward bowling, particularly from Andre Adams. But Swann struck in his second over when Joyce was leg before to a ball which turned and struck him high on the pad and just before lunch Wells, who has scored two centuries already this summer, was bowled for a 21-ball duck by Patel.Murray Goodwin struck Adams for two fours in an over but the New Zealander broke through when wicketkeeper Chris Read ran backwards to take an excellent diving catch off a mis-timed pull to leave Sussex on 119 for 3.Matt Prior, who was also making his Championship return, added 70 in 17 overs with Nash to regain the initiative but Swann returned to the attack and struck straightaway when Prior sliced Swann’s first ball back to cover. Nash had looked untroubled, hitting 13 fours in 205 minutes in moving to his highest score of the season. But seven short of his hundred he missed a straight one from Patel and was did not look surprised when the leg before appeal was upheld.Yardy, also making his first Championship appearance of the season as he recovers from depression, helped England team-mate Luke Wright put on 39 for the sixth wicket either side of tea. But Patel struck again when he turned one as Yardy tried to drive and Adam Voges snapped up the edge at slip.Wright took the attack to Swann, twice striking him off the front foot to the boundary in an over, and was going well on 33 when Broad returned to the attack and to have him caught down the leg side. Broad was in business again later in the over when his nip-backer trapped James Anyon and Sussex were still 18 short of securing a third batting point whenAmjad Khan played across his pads to give the persevering Luke Fletcher a wicket. But Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, mixing careful defence with the occasional attacking flourish, made an unbeaten 43 off 52 balls with six fours and helped last man Monty Panesar take the score to 304 before Panesar played on to give Adams his 500th first-class wicket.Panesar is likely to have plenty of work as the contest unfolds and he and his team-mates finished the day on a positive note when Rana struck in his second over with the new ball, bowling left-hander Neil Edwards via an inside edge as Notts closed on 5 for 1.

Davey almost upsets Warwickshire

Warwickshire overcame a major batting failure before beating Scotland by six runs to register their second Clydesdale Bank 40 victory in two days at Edgbaston

02-May-2011
ScorecardWarwickshire overcame a major batting failure before beating Scotland by sixruns to register their second Clydesdale Bank 40 victory in two days atEdgbaston.Scotland seamers Matthew Parker and Gordon Goudie shared nine wickets as theBears lurched to 118 for 6 following a century opening stand and thenrecovered to make 224 after Keith Barker’s first half-century in one-daycricket.Parker, who went with Sussex on a winter trip to South Africa, finished with5 for 47, the best performance for Scotland against county opposition sinceAustralian overseas player Ian Moran took 5 for 28 against Northamptonshirein 2006.Josh Davey’s 91 from 98 balls – the highest of his two fifties in successivedays – gave Scotland hopes of reaching their target but Darren Maddy claimed twotop order wickets in his first nine balls and the required rate escalated out ofrange.Needing 92 from the last 10 overs, they could only reach 218 for 9 despitePreston Mommsen’s 42 from 44 balls in a stand of 104 with Davey, who was caughtat deep mid-wicket after hitting six fours. Three players were run out in a desperate bid to keep up the chase but the day will be remembered for all the hardship heaped on Warwickshire’s batsmen. There was not a hint of trouble ahead as Varun Chopra’s bandwagon rolled onduring the three-figure start with William Porterfield. Even Parker and Goudiewere muted as they conceded 42 runs in seven overs with the new ball. The former Essex opener went past 700 runs for the season as he made 31 in hisninth innings in all competitions. No one would have imagined what chaos would set in from the moment he got himself out, hoisting the second ball of Parker’s second spell straight to Josh Davey on the deep square-leg boundary.Porterfield, well known to the Scots after scoring two centuries against themwhen playing for Ireland, was looking set for another until he fell for 64,scooping up a return chance to Parker in the following over. The medium pacer, who now plays his league cricket for Forfarshire, continuedto wreak havoc. Suddenly he had four wickets in 16 balls when Mohammad Yousufshovelled another catch to Davey and Jim Troughton was taken at point.Goudie took over from Parker and made it six wickets in the space of four oversfrom the new Pavilion End by bowling Maddy and Rikki Clarke. Offspinner Mommsen accounted for Tim Ambrose, but luckily for Warwickshire they still had two all-rounders who were able to put on 66 for the eighth wicket.Barker hit five fours in making 56 and Chris Woakes chipped in with 31 beforeScotland’s two destroyers had the last word. Barker was caught at cover from Parker’s last ball and Goudie (4 for 36) bowled Woakes and Maurice Holmes in his final over.

Sammy 'surprised' at Shillingford report

Darren Sammy, the West Indies captain, has added his support to troubled offspinner Shane Shillingford who has been reported for a suspect action following the first Test against Sri Lanka

Sa'adi Thawfeeq22-Nov-2010Darren Sammy, the West Indies captain, has added his support to troubled offspinner Shane Shillingford who has been reported for a suspect action following the first Test against Sri Lanka. Both Sammy and the coach Ottis Gibson have indicated Shillingford will be retained for the second match despite the cloud over him.”I am surprised. We have been informed by the match referee and other people who made that decision,” said Sammy. “It’s beyond our control. We are just supporting Shane and helping him along to come through the second Test. I am not in a position to talk on that subject at the moment. But what I can tell you is that Shane will be getting the full support of all the squad members and the coaching staff.”Sammy denied that Shillingford was under extra pressure going into the second Test. “We did a lot of good things in the last Test and Shane was part of the good things that we did. We are just looking to give our full support and help him along in the second Test.”Sammy, who took over the captaincy from Chris Gayle, wants his team to build on the positive performance in Galle where they had Sri Lanka under pressure throughout the match. “When we left the Caribbean we said that we are going to Sri Lanka to compete and restore pride of Caribbean cricket. We did that in the last Test. Right now it’s all about being consistent and improving on our performances.”Like in the first Test our preparations were limited. The opportunities we got indoors we made full use of. The areas we can improve are doing well in middle-order. Although the middle-order collapsed still we went onto score 580 runs. We just have to keep improving. The middle-order is one area we can improve. We came here with a winning mindset and we need to improve on a few things,” he said. The suggestion is that West Indies will employ a twin-spin attack in Colombo with Sulieman Benn, who is available again after suspension, being recalled to partner Shillingford. “When we meet at a selection committee we’ll look at the balance of the team and see what’s the best 11 to represent West Indies. Sulieman and Shane are options to consider,” said Sammy. However, despite dominating the opening encounter on the back of Gayle’s career-best 333, Sammy knows to be wary of Sri Lanka on their home soil. “Sri Lanka are one of the best teams in the world. We are expecting them to come back strong. I hope they will come hard on us. But we have prepared sufficiently.”We are looking to improve on our performances. We know what we are capable of doing. We have seen the Sri Lankan line up. Our guys will go out there and play accordingly.”

Liverpool: Journalist has Guilherme claim

According to journalist Jorge Nicola (via Sport Witness), Liverpool are among the clubs interested in Palmeiras youngster Luis Guilherme.

The lowdown: Rapidly rising stock

The 16-year-old was part of the Palmeiras side that won the biggest U-20 tournament in Brazil in January and appears to have a bright future.

Guilherme provided one assist in two appearances during the competition despite his tender years, featuring alongside the highly sought after Endrick, who has also been linked with the Reds previously.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-29/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Not it appears that Liverpool could be casting their eye on South America once again…

The latest: Reds make contact

As per Nicola’s YouTube channel, translated by SW, the Anfield club, along with Manchester City, are said to have been ‘analysing’ the Brazilian youngster since last season.

Whilst there is no mention of bids for the left-winger – who has already been compared to Brazil legend Rivaldo – both Premier League giants are believed to already be in contact with representatives of the youth international.

Meanwhile, a report elsewhere from Defensa Central also cites interest from Liverpool but focuses on Real Madrid, whilst mentioning admiration from Manchester United, Arsenal, Barcelona, Inter Milan and AC Milan, so it seems he is highly sought-after.

The verdict: Make it happen Julian

Albeit a relatively unknown entity, taking a gamble on unearthing the next superstar from Brazil can only be viewed as an exciting transfer for the club, and it’s good to see newly appointed sporting director Julian Ward hard at work scouring every corner of the globe.

So often down the years, Real Madrid have held the monopoly when it comes to landing the next big thing from South America, but given Liverpool’s current stature and indeed the Brazilian contingent already based on Merseyside, the Anfield club must be a major contender.

Guilherme scored three times as Palmeiras lifted the Under-15 Nike Premier Cup in 2021 and the levels of interest would suggest that this is a move Ward should be seriously considering.

In other news, one Liverpool player has been backed to leave this summer. Find out who it is here.
