BCCI bans five players after corruption probe

The BCCI’s disciplinary committee has banned five Indian domestic players after studying a report on allegations of corruption against them

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Jun-2012Five Indian domestic players facing allegations of corruption have been banned by the BCCI’s disciplinary committee. The BCCI announced the penalties after studying a report on the allegations, which had arisen in May after an India TV sting and alluded to the five being involved in match-fixing and negotiating for extra – and illegal – pay.The harshest punishment was dealt to Madhya Pradesh fast bowler TP Sudhindra, who was handed a life ban after being found guilty of “receiving a consideration to spot-fix” in a domestic game. Sudhindra was the leading wicket-taker in the 2011-12 Ranji Trophy.Uttar Pradesh fast bowler Shalabh Srivastava will be out of the game for five years after the committee deemed him guilty of agreeing, and negotiating terms, to fix a match though no fixing eventually took place.Three other players were given one-year bans for bringing the game into disrepute through “loose talk and unsubstantiated bragging”: Madhya Pradesh batsman Mohnish Mishra, Goa offspinner Amit Yadav and Himachal Pradesh allrounder Abhinav Bali. The punishments take effect from May 15, the date on which the IPL governing council suspended them. The report had been compiled by Ravi Sawani, head of the BCCI’s new anti-corruption unit, after India TV’s sting. Sawani spoke to all five players before submitting his report to the BCCI disciplinary committee – which comprises BCCI president N Srinivasan, BCCI vice-presidents Arun Jaitley and Niranjan Shah – on June 9.The committee which met in Mumbai on Saturday said neither Sudhindra nor Mishra would be entitled to the monthly gratis, benevolent fund, benefit match or any other facility, nor could hold any position in any cricket association affiliated to the BCCI for the period of their bans. Sudhindra becomes the third Indian player to be banned for life, after Mohammad Azharuddin (found guilty of match-fixing) and Ajay Sharma (found guilty of having links with bookies). The BCCI release that announced the bans did not make any mention of increased or illegal IPL pay.India TV, in mid-May, had showed footage of a player bowling a big no-ball in a limited-overs match and played a recording of a phone conversation that it said was of a current IPL player negotiating a fee for bowling a no-ball. It also had at least three players on camera allegedly seeking more lucrative IPL deals – including extra money that would have violated their IPL contracts – with other league franchises through an undercover reporter posing as a sports agent.

Sydney pitch likely to resemble last year's

Sydney’s 100th Test pitch should offer plenty to the fast bowlers on the first day, as the curator Tom Parker said he wanted to emulate the surfaces prepared for the previous two New Year’s matches

Sydney’s 100th Test pitch should offer plenty to the fast bowlers on the first day, as the curator Tom Parker said he wanted to emulate the surfaces prepared for the previous two New Year’s matches, against England and Pakistan. Each surface was full of life on the first day before settling down and turning later, and Parker said those characteristics epitomised what he has wanted to do with the SCG surface since taking over from Peter Leroy in 1997. Twelve months ago Australia battled to 4 for 134 on a rain-interrupted first day on the way to an innings defeat, while in the first week of 2010 the hosts were bundled out for 127 before recovering to record a dramatic victory over a dysfunctional Pakistan side.”I was happy with that [pitch for the game against England] and I was happy with the previous year’s as well [against Pakistan],” Parker told ESPNcricinfo. “The last two years we’ve really got it together and it has really come up well. I’m hoping to have a pitch somewhat similar to that.”That’s the ideal scenario and that’s what we’re aiming for. I don’t see why that won’t happen. The weather’s been kind to me and the forecast is for hot sunny days in the lead-up to the Test and the first couple of days of the Test, so I don’t see why it shouldn’t be perfect for us.”Parker’s expectations will add intrigue to the questions of selection, as Australia mull over the possible inclusion of fast bowler Ryan Harris. Michael Clarke, the Australia captain, has not ruled out the use of four fast bowlers after the quicks did the lion’s share of the damage in Melbourne. As it did last year, Sydney has spent much of spring and summer cloaked in heavy cloud and frequent rain, only occasionally enjoying the sort of sunshine Parker would prefer. But in the lead-up to the New Year’s Test the forecast has improved, allowing groundstaff to get some sun onto the wicket and outfield.”There’s been a lot of rain around but we have the covers on as well; we’ve had a lot of matches up to date and it hasn’t affected our preparation too much on the centre,” Parker said. “The thing that’s been a bit of a downfall for us is the overcast conditions more than the rain.”The hours of direct sunlight have been fairly minimal on several days, and that’s been a bit of a pain as far as grass growth goes. In saying that, the outfield’s in tip-top condition, as is the centre square.”The arrival of the centenary Test has coincided with the return of Sydney’s more traditional type of pitch, offering help to batsmen, fast bowlers and spinners in equal measure. The often lively surfaces of the 1950s and 60s gave way to slow turners in the 1980s and parts of the 90s, before Parker took on the long-term project of returning the track to its classical attributes.”That’s what I’ve always aimed for. It has always been my goal to produce pitches with an even coverage of grass and pitches that were going to play consistently over the period of the match. We’ve got that mix pretty well right now.”As long as you’re going into the match with great preparation and good grass coverage, nice even moisture throughout the pitch, it usually pays off and the pitch will play consistently. I like to pride myself on the pitches playing consistently without the balls being one up and one down. Over the course of the five days the pitch changes and the pitch should change, but as long as it is consistent I’m pretty happy with that.”As for the centenary, Parker is delighted to be preparing pitch No. 100 at the grand old ground. “It is a tremendous honour. Not a day goes by that I don’t feel privileged to work here. When you look at the history of the SCG, it is fantastic, and to be a major part of that is a great honour. I’m really looking forward to preparing the 100th Test pitch at the SCG I can assure you.”

I would never ask Amir, Asif to cheat – Butt

Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt denied ever asking Mohammad Asif or Mohammad Amir to cheat and bowl pre-planned no-balls, a court heard on Friday during the eighth day of the alleged spot-fixing trial in London.”There’s no way I could tell Amir or Asif (to cheat),” Butt said in a police interview played to the court. “They are the two players that most teams would want to have. When we pick our team those are the first two names that we have to write.”The jury at Southwark Crown Court heard a transcript of police interviews with Butt in September last year, shortly after the publication of an undercover investigation into alleged corruption by the Pakistan cricketers and Majeed, released in the .The transcript was read out in role play format between policeman at the time Detective Constable John Massey and Sarah Whitehouse for the prosecution. Butt sat in the dock, wearing a dark grey jacket and royal blue shirt, following a printed transcript of the interview. He was sandwiched by Asif and a female interpreter. In the first police interview, in which Butt attributed Majeed’s predictions of the no-balls coming true as “a freak occurrence”, he denied ever accepting money for corrupt purposes. Butt also said Majeed had no influence over him as the agent had boasted during the investigation.”I don’t think anybody could influence me to cheat my country,” Butt said. “I play this game for the love of the game and for the love of my country.”He added: “I have played at all levels for Pakistan and in ten years of playing for Pakistan I have never had any charge against me. This is the first time I have had a charge (against me).” He also denied knowing of a culture of cheating in the Pakistan team.Butt said he had been happy with Majeed as his agent because he brought him generous earnings from endorsements outside of his cricket duties. These included payments of £16,000 and £30,000 for endorsing Majeed companies Blue Sky and Capital Cricket.Butt also was heard to say on the tapes that Majeed arranged a sportswear and cricket equipment deal for him with Adidas that earned him £800 per international match plus bonuses. “He brought me things like the Adidas contract,” Butt said, “which was a big thing to me as no other Pakistani had that.”The opening batsman also revealed how Majeed had “talked about” a potential sponsorship agreement with Tag Heur watches, in which he would received a new £3,000 watched every three months, plus money after six months. A contract with a shoe company was also discussed that would see his name sewn into the shoes.Butt and Asif are facing charges of conspiracy to cheat, and conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments, following the Lord’s Test in August last year when they allegedly conspired with Majeed, teenage fast bowler Amir and other people unknown to bowl pre-determined no-balls. Butt and Asif deny the charges. The case continues.

Sehwag set to join embattled Indian side

Virender Sehwag, who missed the first two Tests of the England tour, has landed in England and is en route to join the Indian team later on Wednesday. Sehwag, who was ruled out for the first fortnight of the England series when the Indian selectors announced the Test squad on July 2, is expected to be available for the last two Tests. The Indians play a two-day tour match against Northants starting this Friday ahead of the third Test which starts in Birmingham next week.India would be optimistic about opening with their regular pair of Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir in Northampton and then in the third Test at Edgbaston. Gambhir has recovered from the left-shoulder injury he picked while fielding in England’s second innings at Lord’s. “He is sure for the next Test,” MS Dhoni said.Sehwag’s return would definitely be a shot in the arm for India, who have been completely outplayed in the series so far and are 2-0 down. It was in England that he scored his first century as an opener, at Trent Bridge in 2002, though he missed the 2007 tour.India lost their premier fast bowler Zaheer Khan to a hamstring injury on the first afternoon of the Lord’s Test, and England’s bowlers have completely dominated their batsmen, most of whom with the exception of Rahul Dravid have struggled to find their touch, form and at times even stand their ground.Sehwag had opted for a shoulder surgery after playing the IPL in May and was ruled out for at least two months including the tour of West Indies. When the selectors picked the squad, it came with a rider that Sehwag was given an additional two weeks rest to allow him to rest his shoulder. In Taunton, ahead of India’s first tour match against Somerset, Indian coach Duncan Fletcher indicated that he was not sure but predicted Sehwag could be back in time for the third Test.In Sehwag’s absence, India fielded three different opening combinations. The Tamil Nadu pair of M Vijay and Abhinav Mukund opened in the three-Test series in the Caribbean that India won 1-0. Gambhir had suffered a shoulder injury during the final round of the IPL, exacerbating an existing injury he claimed he originally picked during the World Cup final in April. Vijay, who was the third-choice opener in the past, struggled and got a tally of 72 runs in the three Tests against West Indies, a series where Abhinav made his debut and impressed scoring 147 runs.At Lord’s, Abhinav joined Gambhir, who was hit on the elbow while fielding in the second innings and batted down the order. Gambhir was then declared unfit to play in the second Test forcing Rahul Dravid to face the new ball in Abhinav’s company.

Michael Hussey told to 'take some risks'

Greg Chappell, the Australian selector, has encouraged Michael Hussey to play with freedom so he can continue to be a force at international level. Hussey has gained the support of Andrew Hilditch and Chappell this week, but has been battling for form over the past two years, averaging 37 in his past 35 Tests. With the Australian squad for the first Ashes Test due to be named on Monday, Chappell offered Hussey some advice. “As you get older, the difficulty is that you are aware of the things that can go wrong and you’re aware of how hard it is to make runs at that level consistently,” Chappell told AAP. “Before you have all that experience, you tend to go out and you can play with a little bit more freedom.”Chappell said finding that freedom was harder as you got older. “The only way you can achieve is to get into the same state of mind that you were in as a younger player,” he said. “That’s the hardest part of being an older player, having that freedom to go out and take some risks.”You’ve got to risk getting out to score runs and that’s the hardest thing to do. We all become more conservative. I haven’t seen anyone who hasn’t suffered from that.”Hussey is now 35, the same age as Simon Katich and Ricky Ponting. The aging line-up has created concerns about the present and fears for the future, with it highly unlikely two of the trio will be playing for their country in a year.Chappell is a believer in young talent but the next rung of batting contenders did not perform well during the week. There were no big scores from Phillip Hughes, Usman Khawaja or Callum Ferguson in the first few days of their ongoing matches, easing the pressure on the incumbents.Hussey is not playing this week but scored 71 not out, 15 and 6 not out in the ODI series against Sri Lanka. Hilditch said it was important to regard batsmen who average 50 in Test cricket highly. “He’s been a great player for Australia, but he will be looking to get runs to stay in the squad, like everyone else,” Hilditch said. Hussey’s mean is currently 49.75 from 54 Tests.
