Liverpool fans praise FSG as club reports record profits

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Liverpool fans have been reacting to a story on the club’s finances, as the Reds secured record-high profits in 2018.

According to Paul Joyce of The Times, Liverpool set a world-record profit of £125 million in the financial year ending May 2018.

The Reds were in deep financial trouble under previous owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett, as reported by The Liverpool Echo, but the heavily-criticised Fenway Sports Group have got things back on track and so much more.

Who has the loudest fans in Europe? PSG certainly state their claim in the video below…

The American owners were bashed tirelessly by supporters during their first few years at the club, as the Anfield faithful were just fed up of poor transfer business and trophy-less seasons.

While the latter of those things hasn’t changed (yet), the Reds are now kings of the transfer market, regularly hailed as one of the best operators in the business.

On top of that, Joyce reports that the club recorded £125m profit last year, a whopping £40m increase on the previous year.

This is even including the £190m Jurgen Klopp splashed out on the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Naby Keita, Fabinho and Alisson Becker, and fans are heaping praise on the previously divisive FSG.

How Manchester United and City swapped roles in the derby day narrative

[ad_pod ]

It is the afternoon of September 23rd 1989 and Manchester City winger David White has just looped a high, long cross plumb onto the forehead of Andy Hinchcliffe. The left-back meets the ball with such force he scores with what is essentially a diving header despite remaining upright until landing. Jim Leighton in nets knows he is beaten on impact and simply falls to his knees in lieu of attempting the spectacular.

A City side containing five home-grown kids had just gone 5-1 up against big spending Manchester United and Maine Road erupted in what can only be described as incredulous bedlam.

Nobody expected the blue half of Manchester to emerge victorious from this derby and only the clinically insane predicted such a walloping and perhaps that is hardly surprising given that the game’s time-stamp pre-empts the transformative effects of City’s takeover by nineteen full years. Some context however is required here.

Back in 1989 United were anything but the trophy-gobbling dominant force they would soon become. The Premier League was still a pipedream of the elite and Sir Alex Ferguson was plainly Alex Ferguson, an under-fire manager who that summer had been furnished with £9m to overhaul a perfectly ordinary squad that had limped to 11th in two of his previous three years in England.

It was – at the time – a colossal outlay that represented a very expensive last roll of the dice and included a world record fee for a defender (Gary Pallister) and a domestic record fee for a central midfielder (Paul Ince). What is more, it was a risk that nearly didn’t come off with striker Mark Robins famously saving Fergie’s hide that January with a FA Cup goal that stopped the axe from falling.

That season United eventually finished a lowly 13th while City finished 14th. Only goal difference separated the pair.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”328975″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Fixture in Focus Manchester City vs Manchester United”]

Yet when Hinchcliffe’s thundering header rippled the net that autumn afternoon City supporters lost their senses in wild celebration of an unexpected underdog victory that was both meaningful and somehow moral. It was a temporary toppling of a giant and the event was considered so special it sustained Blues through the many dark days to come. Personally speaking it remains one of the top three footballing moments of my life.

The above is mentioned in detail to highlight what came next. Because if that was the extremity of the narrative that accompanied a derby of near equals just imagine what it was like consequently for City supporters when their hated foe got their act together and conquered the globe. From that year forward the respective trajectories of the Manchester clubs could not have contrasted more with United bossing the Premier League for two decades, winning two Champions Leagues and taking a seat at the establishment table, while City shot themselves in the foot more times than a man who had surgically replaced a hand with a gun and eternally pointed it downwards.

Throughout those polarising years reputations became entrenched. United were glory-hunting plastics who resided largely in Surrey. City were ‘Citeh’, a bitter tribe forever in the dumps; a relative pauper so down on their luck that United took great glee is taking faux-pity on them while only acknowledging Liverpool and Arsenal as rivals.

Subsequently derbies became less David vs Goliath and more akin to a farm-boy and his two droids taking on the Death Star. Only this was real life, not a box-office phenomenon.

There were still some memorable wins of course; four to be precise, spread across an eighteen year abyss but dwarfed by fifteen losses, some of which were comprehensive to say the least. Those rare victories were cherished, fabled: their importance exaggerated to the extent that some Blues insisted they’d be willing to endure relegation if it might bloody the nose of their neighbouring behemoth over the course of ninety minutes. I never went that far. But I came close.

“Not in my lifetime.” Those were the words spoken by Sir Alex Ferguson in September 2009 when a reporter had the temerity to ask if Manchester United would ever go into a derby as the underdogs. By now the landscape of Mancunian football was changing dramatically with a shifting of power deriving from Manchester City’s takeover by ADUG and a monumental investment in personnel. United meanwhile were merely ticking along nicely, though worries lingered about the imminent retirement of their greatest ever coach.

At first United held firm, prevailing through a League Cup semi-final across two legs and then there was that infamous 4-3 at Old Trafford with Michael Owen snatching a late, late winner. As satisfying as these moments must have been for United fans – and as heart-breaking as they were for Blues – they still felt like a last stand.

Manchester City have entered twelve from the last thirteen derbies as favourites, quite often firmly so. It’s a remarkable transfer of status that began with a FA Cup semi-final triumph at Wembley in 2011 then reached a solidifying stature through a 6-1 battering at Old Trafford that brought humiliation but sadly not humility to the Red tribe. In 2013, after another one-sided affair at Old Trafford, a manager of Manchester United – David Moyes – came out post-match and stated that his club ‘aspired’ to be at City’s level.

Moyes’ comment invoked widespread fury among the red fan-base due to its foregoing of pride but last year they similarly forgot themselves, celebrating a 3-2 comeback at the Etihad as if they’d won the league. In the new reality their win only postponed for seven days City actually winning the title.

On Twitter this past week I have seen United supporters talk of the levelling that comes from derby games. I have seen them admit to being underdogs and hoping for that underdog spirit to count.

These words took me right back, though not with much nostalgia. In any case, Ferguson’s 2009 prophecy has been firmly disproved as United travel to the Etihad Stadium this Sunday six places, nine points and 14 goals behind their bitter rivals after just eleven games.

Rangers must not entertain any offers for Morelos

Rangers have turned down an offer of £3.75m from Bordeaux for striker Alfredo Morelos, according to BBC Scotland.

What’s the word?

Steven Gerrard has been busy bringing in new recruits at Ibrox since his appointment as manager.

Eleven new faces have been signed, but now there is a danger of the Scottish outfit losing first-team players.

According to BBC Scotland, Morelos has attracted the attention of Bordeaux, but Rangers have knocked back the French club’s opening offer.

The 22-year-old moved to the Glasgow-based outfit last year from HJK Helsinki in a £1m deal.

What should Gerrard do?

Morelos has the opportunity to be a real threat for the Gers this season.

He has already shown in his first seven outings of the campaign that he can be reliable in front of goal, as well as provide service to his teammates.

Morelos, who scored 15 Premiership goals in his first season for Rangers in 2017-18, has netted three times and created two assists in all competitions so far.

The attacker is not completely faultless, though, as he does have the tendency to see red mist.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”278881″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Kane’s Kryptonite & London’s Biggest Losers”]

That is something that Gerrard will have to try to manage, but a few hot-headed moments are not enough to consider selling.

Morelos could be an important part of Rangers’ season, so they must resist any more offers that come their way, and hope that Gerrard isn’t given his biggest test as manager yet with the 22-year-old potentially pushing for an exit.

Leeds United fans slam Mateusz Klich after Cardiff defeat

Leeds United dropped off of the summit of the Championship table as they were beaten 3-1 by fellow high-flyers Cardiff City in the Welsh capital on Tuesday night, and Whites fans were far from impressed with Mateusz Klich on his first league start for the club.

The Poland international had yet to be named in Thomas Christiansen’s starting XI in the league but following a fine performance in the EFL Cup success against Burnley, and with Eunan O’Kane missing out at the Cardiff City Stadium because of illness, the 27-year-old featured alongside Kalvin Phillips in the middle of the park.

However, it was a night to forget for Klich – whose hesitation on the ball led to the first Bluebirds goal – and his teammates as captain Liam Cooper saw red on the stroke of half-time with the Yorkshire outfit already trailing 2-0, and he was eventually replaced by Ronaldo Vieira in the 68th minute.

Leeds supporters were quick to have their say on Klich’s showing via social media, and while some said he “isn’t good enough for this team”, others simply described his performance as “awful”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Chelsea: 3 players that could be signed to replace John Terry

John Terry’s career at Chelsea appears to be winding down, and Antonio Conte must start thinking about who is going to replace the veteran defender.

Indeed, the Evening Standard are reporting that his contract is not going to be renewed, so for the first time in a while, the prospect of Terry’s departure is a very likely and realistic proposition.

Chelsea aren’t blessed with defensive depth so a replacement is absolutely essential. And considering how many top defenders are currently honing their craft in Europe, Conte won’t be short of potential options.

He must look to weed out the best players from the pack, though, and he must ensure that he is picking the best option for the money that he will have available to him.

With that said, here are 3 players that could be signed to replace John Terry…

Antonio Rudiger

Antonio Rudiger suffered a long-term injury last season, but he’s come back well this year – and has already made 16 appearances in Serie A for Roma.

A strong, powerful defender, Rudiger would certainly fill the gap left behind by John Terry in that regard, though you could argue that he doesn’t have the leadership of the current Chelsea captain.

Indeed, what he does bring to the table that Terry lacks is mobility – with Rudiger very quick and agile at the back.

He would be an expensive option, but at just 24 years old, he would be a long-term solution.

Virgil van Dijk

If Antonio Conte is looking for a player that is ready-made for the Blues, Virgil van Dijk could be his man.

The Southampton defender has been one of the Premier League’s standout players in recent years, offering dynamic defending and an impressive aerial force at the heart of the Saints’ back line.

Indeed, he is also a regular captain of the side, so he could come in and take that role should Conte decide.

He differs from most options in that he already has Premier League experience, so there won’t be an adjustment period. Again, he would be an expensive option, but if Conte wants quick results, van Dijk could be his man.

Kalidou Koulibaly

Football Soccer – SSC Napoli v FC Dynamo Kyiv – Champions League – Group B – San Paolo Stadium, Naples, Italy – 23/11/16. SSC Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly in action with Dynamo Kyiv’s Artem Besedin . REUTERS/Ciro De Luca

Kalidou Koulbaily has been a long-term Chelsea target, and it is easy to see why.

He is strong, he is powerful, he can read the game fantastically, he is very quick and mobile and he’s been one of the most impressive defenders in Serie A this season.

Indeed, this option is a likely one, though you could argue that van Dijk would offer more than the Senegalese defender.

Lawwell: Celtic boss’ fate was pretty much decided last year

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell believes Celtic’s defeat to Malmo and failure to qualify for the Champions League group stages effectively cost manager Ronny Deila his job.

The Norwegian came under increasing pressure and scrutiny after the loss in the qualifier, and Lawwell told the Scottish Sun, it led to a vicious chain of events which led to an inevitable resignation.

WANT MORE? >> Celtic transfer news | Scottish Premiership transfer new

“We played really well towards the end of last season. So we felt pretty confident. Then Malmo came — and bang! That was the turning point. The pressure started to mount on the back of that.”

“Supporters were disappointed, we were disappointed, pressure came from the media and from that point it was difficult for Ronny to recover. It became difficult to build and create. It reached the stage where our players couldn’t win going into games. They could only lose. There was only really relief when we won games and no real enjoyment.”

According to Lawwell, Deila’s philosophy of building a young side and playing attractive, attacking football could not be realised in a pressure cooker atmosphere as every loss was pounced on in the media.

The Malmo loss had become a millstone around his neck, and therefore the focus switched from a long term focus to a short term one of needing to win.

“It was like a national disaster if we lost. That affected performances. There was a tension around the place. That in turn affected Ronny’s ability to really change the culture, because he had to win.”

Deila’s replacement is still very much open to debate with the favourite changing almost daily with the bookmakers.

Currently Roy Keane is the favourite for the role, with Neil Lennon, David Moyes, Brendan Rodgers and Paul Lambert also in contention for the job.

'I couldn't give a sh*t' – Jurgen Klopp hits back at celebration police as outgoing Liverpool boss aims to 'keep writing wonderful book' with Carabao Cup final victory over Chelsea

Jurgen Klopps aims to win as many trophies as possible before leaving Liverpool at the end of the ongoing season.

  • Liverpool face Chelsea in Carabao Cup final on Sunday
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Liverpool manager slammed the celebration police who criticised Mikel Arteta for his wild reactions after Arsenal's 3-1 win over the Reds earlier this month. He also mentioned that he wants to win multiple trophies this season before leaving the Merseyside club at the end of the current campaign.

  • WHAT JURGEN KLOPP SAID

Speaking to reporters ahead of the club's Carabao Cup final against Chelsea on Sunday, Klopp said, "I heard the discussions – that Mikel [Arteta] over-celebrated the [Arsenal] win against us. That definitely did not come from me. Everybody can do whatever. I didn’t invent fist-pumps and I don’t have the copyright on it and I don’t want it. You do what you do for yourself and your people. What the outside world thinks about it – I couldn’t give a s—, to be honest. And you can write that exactly like that. This is for us and nobody else. Who likes it, likes it, and who doesn’t like it, doesn’t like it. You can make what you want of my celebrations."

He added, "I want to win on Sunday but not for me or my trophy cabinet. It is for the boys, for the club, for the people. That is much more important and everything will go on. What we are doing at the moment is writing a wonderful book, I would say. We wrote and we are still writing a wonderful book and when I leave we close that book, put it on the shelf and then someone else will write a wonderful book. That is the idea. I will not leave anything inside. I will give absolutely everything until the last second.

"Yes, there is space for some chapters. It is long. I am not there and writing the resume already. Not at all. I am 100 per cent in trying to create a few special memories on top of what we have done. We will see what is possible, but the basis we created so far – come on, 60 points is an extraordinary amount of points with all the things that have gone on. And we all know it should be 61 or 63! We all know that! It is so special and let’s keep going. Whatever happens happens and as long as we can influence games we should give it a proper try. The red part of Wembley should be rocking. That would be really, really nice. This team deserves it. This team deserves each push. These boys will throw their heart and soul on the pitch. I know that."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Last month, the German manager announced that he would end his nine-year-long relationship with the Reds at the end of the ongoing season. Since then he has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich although his agent made it clear that he would take a one-year-long sabbatical from coaching.

Faturou!

BRILHOU A ESTRELA TRICOLOR

Set Foden free! How England should line up in World Cup clash with Wales

Gareth Southgate named an unchanged team in England's first two group games but is it time to make some changes?

It’s time for Gareth Southgate to unleash Phil Foden on this World Cup.

England were crying out for the Manchester City star as they struggled to an uninspiring stalemate against the United States on Friday night.

But Gareth Southgate decided to keep him on the bench, much to the frustration of the Three Lions supporters in the stands, and those watching back home.

Southgate has since insisted that he "loves" Foden as a player and has given assurances that he will be handed opportunities to make his mark in Qatar.

Well, he needs to be given that opportunity against Wales on Tuesday night.

Barring a horror result, England have already secured passage through the knockout stages, so Southgate can try a few new things against Robert Page’s side.

And Foden’s quality and creativity could make a major difference in the central areas and revitalise an attack which looked worryingly toothless against the US.

Southgate doesn’t need to make wholesale changes to his team just because of one poor result and he certainly doesn’t need to move away from the 4-3-3 system he has been using.

But a few new faces could certainly be beneficial and Foden has to be one of those.

Jordan Pickford

This remains a no-brainer. Pickford has not had much to do so far during the early stages of the tournament, but when he has been called into action, he has performed well. He commanded his area impressively against the USA and made some important saves when he needed to.

AdvertisementKyle Walker

This would be one of the changes I would make from the team that started against the USA. It’s not that Kieran Trippier was any worse than anyone else, but more a case of giving Walker some proper game time ahead of the knockout stages. I think we all expect Southgate to move to a back three at some point, especially when England come up against a top team, and when he does, Walker will be used on the right of that back three. So, he needs to get some minutes under his belt having been out for so long and this represents a good opportunity to give him game time.

GettyJohn Stones

I don’t think the centre-backs need to change. We know that Southgate trusts them and both have started the tournament well. Stones plays a key role in getting England on the front foot with his ability to bring the ball out from the back and he will be important during a game when England are expected to have a lot of possession.

(C)Getty ImagesHarry Maguire

There is a slight injury concern over Maguire, who seemed to clutch his hamstring during the final minutes of Friday night’s game. But if he is fit, then he has to start against Wales. For all his issues this season, Maguire has started the tournament well and was England’s best player against the United States. And with Kieffer Moore expected to start for Wales, it’s clear that Robert Page’s side will look to get the ball forward quickly and utilise Moore’s excellent aerial ability. Maguire was dominant in the air against the US on Friday night and England will need him to be again to counter the threat of the giant Wales striker.
