Liverpool’s Xherdan Shaqiri could provide key to success against Newcastle

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Xherdan Shaqiri could have the perfect opportunity to demonstrate his quality against Newcastle United this weekend.

On the chalkboard

Having withdrawn from the Switzerland squad over the international break, the 27-year-old used the time to train at Melwood in a possible attempt to prove himself to Jurgen Klopp while the majority of his team-mates were away.

The former Stoke man has played just 16 minutes of competitive football this season despite Liverpool playing six games.

As a result, and due to not playing for his national team, he should be well-rested and determined to showcase what he can offer to this Liverpool side, and would likely jump at the chance to start on Saturday, though perhaps he should be fielded in a rather unfamiliar position.

With Liverpool’s front-three typically beginning the season in goal-scoring form it is hard to envision Klopp leaving one of them out of the side, but there is a case that Shaqiri could operate in the middle of the pitch, which he did on three separate occasions last season.

One of those was a 13-minute cameo in the defeat to PSG in the Champions League group stages, but the other two came in Premier League wins over Southampton and Huddersfield.

On his home debut against the Saints, Shaqiri was in inspired form and his presence in the side helped Liverpool to race into a 3-0 halftime lead. He was, rather surprisingly, substituted at the interval, but his display encouraged Klopp to give him another opportunity against Huddersfield a few weeks later.

In a tight encounter at the John Smith’s Stadium, Shaqiri unpicked the lock on Huddersfield’s back line, threading a sumptuous through ball into the path of Mo Salah, who slotted the ball home to hand Liverpool three vital points.

The pair of performances hinted that he could play a key attacking midfield role, but his career on Merseyside never quite took off as many expected it to.

There was enough evidence on show to suggest that, in a particular encounter, such as the one which beckons tomorrow, he should be included from the outset.

That would, of course, mean one of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, or Georginio Wijnaldum missing out, but given the aforementioned trio have only contributed one assist and no goals between them this season, it is an option Klopp should definitely consider.

Finding a way through

Opta have recorded how often each Premier League team engages in pressing sequences so far this season, with Newcastle third-last, suggesting they like to sit deep and soak up the pressure instead of hunting the ball down.

That was the method that worked so effectively for them in their win at Tottenham Hotspur, and it is likely that Steve Bruce will once again look to restrict space to try to contain Liverpool’s threat.

It is in such circumstances where a player like Shaqiri becomes not only valuable but necessary.

One method the Reds often use to breakdown teams is crossing, but Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson have been lacking in that area so far this season, with a crossing success rate of 12% and 21% respectively.

As a result, they will have to find an alternative. Shaqiri would provide a link between midfield and the front three, while he also has the ability to score from distance, with five of his eight Stoke goals in 2017/18 being scored from outside of the box.

That season was the last in which the Swiss featured regularly, and his return of seven assists and 2.3 average key passes per game underlines his threat in the final third, and how he could be the midfield playmaker to unlock the Newcastle defence.

Man United star Pogba proves exactly how much Red Devils would miss him

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Despite the transfer window closing in the Premier League last Thursday, there remains a possibility Paul Pogba could still leave Manchester United. The Frenchman has been courted by the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus all summer, and with the deadline in other major European leagues still some time away, there are no guarantees the 26-year-old will stay at Old Trafford.

On Sunday afternoon though, with the world watching the Red Devils’ highly-anticipated clash against top-six rivals Chelsea, Pogba came to the fore.

The France World Cup winner appeared to put the speculation to one side and helped run the show for United in the middle of the park. The performance wasn’t without its occasional faults, but there was no doubting the former Juventus star appeared to embrace just being back on the pitch.

Sitting alongside Scott McTominay in a deeper-lying midfield two, Pogba was the architect behind many of United’s thrilling counter-attacks. The forwards rather understandably took all the limelight with their scintillating pace, but it was the Red Devils’ maverick star who kick-started moves with his powerful running and intelligent passing.

His two assists were so remarkably different that they highlighted the very diverse talents Pogba has to offer. His sumptuous pass over the top for Marcus Rashford to latch on to and fire home was a thing of beauty. His role in the side’s fourth goal was equally brilliant, but this time it was his marauding run forward and weighted through ball to Daniel James that caught the eye.

In total, the Frenchman made four key passes as United dominated proceedings in the second-half. His 77.4% pass accuracy was nothing to write home about, and he was sometimes caught in possession as Chelsea looked to press the ball, but it was his willingness to receive the ball in dangerous areas and try more difficult things to help his team that resulted in him losing out on occasion.

Losing a midfielder like Pogba in the remaining weeks of the window would rob United of someone who has shown he can be more than a lynch-pin. His range of passing, driving runs and ability to cover the ground easily marks him out as a unique option in the Red Devils’ squad. Make no mistake about it, the 26-year-old’s display against Chelsea showed exactly what Solskjaer’s side could miss out on, were he to leave.

Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang replies to Alexandre Lacazette’s Instagram snap

[ad_pod ]

Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are a truly inseparable duo at Arsenal, both on and off the pitch, it seems.

Whenever one posts something on their

/B0EozI9o8A6/” data-lasso->social media accounts, the other is extremely quick to reply and either rinse his friend or share some great messages of support.

It’s safe to say the attacking tandem of the Gunners is really getting along, and for that reason, it was not really surprising to find Aubameyang’s response in Lacazette’s comment section under his latest Instagram snap.

The Frenchman shared a photo with some of Olympique Lyon’s players after the Emirates Cup game and it seems that Aubameyang got a bit jealous.

The pacy forward from Gabon commented that he won’t even like the photo, which is probably because he’s not in it with them. But after a while, he posted a second reply saying that he’ll make the effort of liking it after all since it is for his “brother”.

The attacking duo scored 50 goals between them last term, but it wasn’t enough to help their club secure a top-four finish in the Premier League, or a trophy with the nearest they cam being their Europa League final defeat to Chelsea.

West Ham target Aaron Long hopeful of deal being done

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

West Ham United target Aaron Long is hopeful of securing a move to the club before Thursday’s transfer deadline, per Sky Sports.

What’s the word?

The report claims that the Hammers are keen to sign the New York Red Bulls defender, who has a £4m release clause in his contract.

However, they have yet to obtain a work permit ahead of the transfer, the report claims, but Long has expressed his desire to move to England and hopes the matter can be resolved by Thursday’s deadline.

He said: “As our biggest ally, it seems strange that a football player from the US can’t automatically get a work visa to play in England.

“Every kid in the USA dreams of playing in the English Premier League. Not many players get the chance, so of course, I would like to play there someday.”

[ad_pod ]

A considered punt

This is a bit of a risky move from the Hammers but there needs to be an investment in the backline.

Few fans will be aware of who Long is, such is the stature of MLS football, but he was named the MLS Defender of the Year for 2018 and is also a full United States international.

He has won 11 caps for his country, scoring two goals, and is a cheap option in an inflated transfer market.

Indeed, the Hammers have struggled to keep the goals out in pre-season, conceding 12 in six games against Altach, Manchester City, Newcastle United, Fulham, Hertha Berlin and Athletic Bilbao.

With a clash with Pep Guardiola’s champions set to kick off their 2019/20 season, Manuel Pellegrini’s defence needs all the help it can get.

Liverpool: Simon Mignolet can reignite career at Crystal Palace

With Liverpool spending, at the time, a world-record fee for a goalkeeper, it was easy to see that Simon Mignolet would play backup to Alisson. Still, to be frozen out almost completely might have come as a surprise.

The 31-year-old managed just two starts last season as Alisson asserted himself as the first choice in both the Premier League and Champions League, and early exits in the FA Cup and League Cup meant Mignolet’s season largely consisted of watching Liverpool from the bench, which is why it makes sense that clubs are circling the ‘keeper this summer.

According to the Evening Standard, both Crystal Palace and Brighton are interested in the former Sunderland stopper, who is reportedly valued at £8 million, and with another season of being second-choice on the horizon, Mignolet should be jumping at the opportunity to leave for first-team football, and in particular, in south London.

The reasoning behind why Mignolet should prefer a move to Palace over Brighton is a simple one, the Belgian is surely more likely to be the number one at the Eagles rather than at the south coast side, who in Matthew Ryan have a clear and established number one given the fact he has started all but four games for the Seagulls over the past two seasons.

At Palace, though, Roy Hodgson switched between Wayne Hennessey and Vicente Guaita for the majority of last season, switching between the two custodians before settling on the Spaniard, and in Mignolet, the Eagles would potentially be securing an upgrade.

Comparing Guaita with Mignolet from stats from the Premier League’s official website, Mignolet managed the same number of clean sheets as the Palace keeper in his last season playing regular (2017/18) football, as well as making more claims from corners as well as saving more penalties.

If given a choice of the two rivals, Palace do seem like a better destination. They are a settled Premier League side who boast a fairly stable defence (conceding 53 goals, the 10th best record in the league, with only Newcastle United in the lower half letting in less) and there is a clearer potential path to the No.1 spot.

Liverpool fans, would you sell Mignolet this summer? Let us know!

Premier League Transfer Roundup: Diaz offered to Arsenal, Thauvin news, Trio after Diagne

[ad_pod ]

Tuesday’s Premier League transfer roundup was made up of Manchester United and Arsenal’s interest in Chelsea’s Tiemoue Bakayoko, Liverpool’s pursuit of Marco Asensio and Everton’s chase of Barcelona’s Malcom. Today’s edition focuses on the Gunners being offered a Real Madrid star, West Ham’s chance to sign a Ligue 1 ace and a trio of sides in contact with a Senegalese striker.

Mariano offered to Gunners

Arsenal’s relatively small budget has been a big talking point during this summer’s transfer window, and it remains to be seen exactly what Unai Emery can do with it. If the Spaniard is after a striker, though, he may have just been gifted the perfect opportunity to sign one. According to The Daily Mirror, Real Madrid have offered Mariano Diaz to the Emirates outfit, and for a cut-price fee of £18m. The former Lyon man is apparently surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu after the 25-year-old scored just 4 goals in 19 appearances for Los Merengues last season.

West Ham given chance to sign Thauvin

West Ham will start next term without their top goalscorer from the previous campaign following Marko Arnautovic’s departure. With only one other player scoring 10 or more goals last time out, some striking power wouldn’t go amiss. They may just have found that, according to Sky Sports’ Transfer Blog (10/07, 09.45). They are reporting that the Hammers have been offered the possibility to take Marseille’s Florian Thauvin to the London Stadium. A £36m fee, plus Javier Hernandez going the other way, has been discussed. The 26-year-old Frenchman has scored at least 15 goals in each of the past three Ligue 1 campaigns, including 16 strikes last year.

Brighton, Crystal Palace and Southampton after Diagne

Each summer, Premier League clubs are on the lookout to sign the right additions to their squad. According to Turkish outlet Aksam, a trio of top-tier clubs have taken their search to the Super Lig. Brighton, Crystal Palace and Southampton have all been credited with an interested in Senegal and Galatasaray forward Mbaye Diagne. All three have apparently been in contact with the 27-year-old’s manager. The former Chinese Super League attacker has a brilliant strike rate in Turkish football, having scored 42 goals in 46 games in the country’s top division since joining Kasimpasa in 2017.

Tottenham Transfer Roundup: Ceballos price set, Jack Clarke latest, Janssen attracting interest

[ad_pod ]

July edges ever nearer, and soon the Premier League’s 20 clubs will start pre-season training as they prepare for the new campaign. Mauricio Pochettino, like his counterparts in England’s top tier, will be hoping to have his squad ready as soon as possible. Today’s Spurs transfer roundup includes an update in the pursuit of a Spanish international, a deal struck for an 18-year-old winger and the potential end of a nightmare for one of the club’s strikers.

Ceballos price set

According to AS, Real Madrid have set the price for their 22-year-old midfielder Dani Ceballos. Los Merengues are reportedly willing to listen to offers of €50m (£44.7m) for the Spurs target who is currently at the U21 European Championships.

Clarke deal close to complete

The Sun is reporting that Jack Clarke will soon complete his transfer to Tottenham from Leeds. Spurs will apparently pay £8.5m for the player, plus add-ons. Clarke played 25 games for the Whites last season, scoring two goals.

Anderlecht have eyes on Janssen

Vincent Janssen is attracting interest from Anderlecht according to Het Laatste Nieuws. The 25-year-old Dutch striker has not had the best of time of in North London – managing just six goals in 42 appearances – but a move to the Belgian League to play under Vincent Kompany could revive his career.

Manchester United fans shocked as club eyes Harry Maguire despite huge valuation

[ad_pod ]

With the incredible success Liverpool have had after paying a world-record sum to bring Virgil van Dijk to the club, it’s little surprise rivals are now attempting to do the same and spend big-money on their own centre-backs.

Recent reports have suggested that Manchester United are considering making a move for Leicester defender Harry Maguire, with claims that the Foxes were demanding in excess of the £75m Liverpool paid for van Dijk.

Now, in an update from the Evening Standard, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have seemingly not been put off by Leicester’s huge valuation of around £90m and are hopeful of striking a deal for less than £80m.

The news was met with shock by United fans on Twitter, who felt Maguire was worth nowhere near the amount being quoted for him.

Could Harry Maguire be on his way to Old Trafford? Check out the video below to see why it would make so much sense…

Some felt that the England international would arguably be worth less than half that, and instead suggested the club turn their attentions elsewhere and pursue a move for Napoli’s commanding centre-half Kalidou Koulibaly.

Indeed, a few supporters of the Old Trafford side even urged Solskjaer to place his faith in the club’s academy products with 21-year-old Axel Tuanzebe amongst those they wanted to be given a chance.

Check out some of the stunned reaction of United fans below:

The image that shows Virgil van Dijk hasn’t always been a stylish operator

[ad_pod ]

The Virgil van Dijk that we all know is a cool, calm, collected guy with an abundance of footballing talent under his belt.

Standing at 6 ft 4 and towering over anyone that stands in his way, the Dutch colossus is a dominant presence who just oozes swagger – Troy Deeney even said that the Liverpool No.4 smells ‘lovely’. What more do you need?

It goes without saying that the former Celtic man is up their with the coolest players in the Premier League, both on and off the pitch.

Luis Suarez certainly had no qualms about celebrating against his former employers in the video below…

Whether he’s picking up his PFA Player of the Year award in a tuxedo and bow tie, or strolling past hapless attackers with that luscious man bun of his, you just know what you’re getting with the 27-year-old.

But has it always been this way?

On the evidence that we’re about to show you, most would say it probably hasn’t.

The image above shows Liverpool’s all-conquering £75m man wearing some of the baggiest jeans you’ll ever see, but let’s be honest, that’s not what we’re looking at is it?

Those clogs!

Just look at them. Huge. Green. They’re basically the footwear equivalent of Shrek; why Van Dijk decided to slip them on and let someone take an actual photograph of him is baffling.

Thankfully for Liverpool fans, their record signing now has a much better dress sense and more confidence as a result, helping him swat aside opposition forwards with ease.

Who knows, if the back-to-back Champions League finalist carried on in this clog-wearing vein throughout his career, would he be in the lofty position in football that he currently is?

Probably not, as nobody would want to be seen dead alongside him whilst he’s wearing those monstrosities, let alone sign him to play for their football club.

In all seriousness though, they are truly awful.
