ICL begins pre-season camp

Steve Rixon, the former Australian wicketkeeper and now an Indian Cricket League (ICL) coach, will coordinate a pre-season camp for ICL players in Bangalore starting today. While Rixon will focus on developing young domestic players, Jock Campbell, ICL’s high performance director, will supervise the overall proceedings. The two-week camp will include specialised training in throwing and sprinting for which the ICL hired international expeerts Zane Allan Campbell and Matthew James Buckley. Kiran More said the objective of the camp was to cover fitness and cricket skills.”The camp will operate under the astute leadership of Jock Campbell & Steve Rixon, who in addition to conditioning the boys to the nuances of the game; will also acquaint them with the anti-doping guidelines,” More said. “I assure the cricketing fraternity & fans of the game that the forthcoming ICL season will set new benchmarks for domestic Indian cricket.”Jock Campbell, Australia’s former strength and conditioning coach, said players will be educated on the international doping policy and drug tests will be carried on players across the eight ICL teams.

Everton confirm Begovic signing

Lots of Everton fans have been left gushing as the Goodison Park faithful confirmed the signing of Asmir Begovic on their official Twitter page.

The Merseyside club tweeted an announcement video in which the former AFC Bournemouth shot-stopper was pictured donning the brand new goalkeeping kit, as he is set to give competition to Jordan Pickford for the 2021/22 season.

He joins on an initial one-year deal with an option of a further year, and becomes Rafa Benitez’s second summer signing after Andros Townsend (evertonfc.com).

Begovic played a key part in the Cherries getting to the EFL Championship play-offs in the last campaign, playing in no fewer than 51 games in total over all competitions and keeping an impressive 18 clean sheets (Transfermarkt).

A player with a lot of experience of playing in the Premier League as well, the 34-year-old should provide adequate cover for Pickford over the course of the new term.

Mascarenhas shows his Hampshire value

ScorecardAn outstanding partnership of 137 between Michael Brown and Dimitri Mascarenhas carried Hampshire to a vital four-wicket victory against Worcestershire to keep their hopes of a quarter-final place alive.Hampshire were in tatters at 65 for 6 after Simon Jones struck twice in two balls, having Jimmy Adams caught at second slip and beating Greg Lamb for pace, in a superb opening spell where he topped 90mph. However, Mascarenhas – who is yet to confirm whether he will return to the IPL now that the Rajasthan Royals have made the semi-finals – showed his value to his county with a fine captain’s innings to follow three wickets. The revelation, though, was Brown who is known more for his Championship batting. He kept his composure after Jones and Steve Magoffin created major problems and paced the chase superbly to complete a career-best. In the end, victory was achieved with 13 balls to spare and towards the finish Brown and Mascarenhas were doing it comfortably. Both innings followed remarkably similar patterns as Mascarenhas reduced Worcestershire to 66 for 6. There was also a maiden one-day wicket for Hamza Riazuddin, the 18-year-old seamer, who earlier in the day sat a school exam. The fightback was staged by Gareth Batty alongside useful efforts from Kabir Ali and Gareth Andrew. It was enough to give Worcestershire what appeared like a winning total, but Hampshire had other ideas.

Rain has the final say

A round-up from the last round of group matches in the Friends Provident Trophy

Cricinfo staff 28-May-2008Midlands DivisionLeicestershire eased through by 13 runs on Duckworth-Lewis against Nottinghamshire in a match that finished just before 8pm at Oakham. Graeme Swann and Samit Patel both took three wickets to restrict the home side to 147 for 7 from 35 overs, but after several rain interruptions Nottinghamshire could not piece together what was in the end a target of 61 from 12 overs.Northamptonshire killed off any hopes Ireland had of a second FP Trophy win at Dublin with a 99-run victory that wasn’t enough to edge Nottinghamshire out of the last eight on Net Run Rate. Andrew Hall’s 72 helped the visitors battle back from 55 for 4 to 205 which was too much for Ireland who folded in the chase. Nicky Boje was the architect of their demise with 4 for 12 and fittingly he took the last wicket, caught and bowled.

South East Division Sogginess abounded in the south east. Middlesex beat Essex by 18 runs on Duckworth-Lewis at Lord’s, leaving Essex to head into the quarters on a winning note. Tim Murtagh and Dirk Nannes forced an early wobble under swinging conditions with some lift off the track but Ryan ten Doeschate’s 97 lifted Essex to a comfortable platform at 244 for 8. His innings included six fours and three sixes, the best of which was a delicate sweep that somehow carried over the rope, borne along as if by magic. The elements were hardly magic, however, and persistent rain meant Middlesex’s innings was a stop-start affair which was finally ended on 120 for 2 after 25 overs, with Billy Godleman on 43. It was enough for the win which denied Essex home advantage in the quarter-finals.Meanwhile, Surrey’s dead rubber with Sussex was washed out at Whitgift School, with Surrey on 189 for 5 after being sent in.

Cricketing girls need clubs to join says Somerset Development Officer

The sun shone all day at Taunton today for the third day of the Women’s Test match between England and India

Richard Walsh16-Aug-2002The sun shone all day at Taunton today for the third day of the Women’s Test match between England and India.Once again a good sized crowd turned up to enjoy the sunshine and the action on the field which centred around Mithali Raj who batted impressively all day against a varied England attack. The diminutive Indian player brought up her double century just before the close of play, by which time the tourists had taken a substantial first-innings lead over their hosts with wickets still remaining. As he watched the afternoon session Somerset Cricket Development Officer Andrew Moulding told me: “We have been very pleased indeed with the response that we have had to the match. We have been particularly pleased with the number of girls who have turned up each day to take part in the free coaching that has been provided for them.”There is now a lot of interest at the younger age ranges, but these youngsters need an exit route into senior cricket, and they need clubs to join.”This is an opportunity for clubs in the region to develop a ladies section. On September 1st a Women’s 8-a -side tournament is being held at Kings College in Taunton, and we would love to hear from any club who would like to enter a side. Anybody who is interested should contact either Jackie Summers on 01364 652588 or myself on 01823 352266.”

Fry makes big Kenwright claim after Ancelotti exit - Exclusive

Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry insists that Bill Kenwright will have been left absolutely gutted by Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to leave the club.

The Italian is now back in Spain with Real Madrid, preparing for the 2021/22 season.

Ancelotti only spent one full season at the club, overseeing a 10th-placed finish in the Premier League, and failing to win a trophy despite significant backing from the board; he brought in the likes of James Rodriguez, Allan, and Ben Godfrey last summer.

Fry insists, though, that Kenwright would have been willing to put his hand in his pocket and back Ancelotti to the hilt this summer if he had remained at the club, with the Toffees aiming for a top-four finish.

Now, though, they are hunting for a new boss to replace the former Chelsea boss, and reports suggest that they could well turn to Nuno Espirito Santo, who left Wolves at the end of the season.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Fry said: “Everton is a different kettle of fish now. Bill is a real football man, he’s marvellous, he has got backing. He will be bitterly, bitterly, bitterly disappointed that the guy’s left him.

“He really will. I know for a fact he was willing to back him.

“They were willing to back him to the hilt in this window to, again, give them a chance of getting in the Champions League, they’re very ambitious.

“That would have hurt Bill and everyone at Everton, but I think it’ll just make them more determined to get the right boss in to take them forward.”

Will Celtic sign Jack Wilshere?

Ange Postecoglou is now the proud holder of the position of Celtic manager.

It’s a vacancy that had been empty since the end of February when Neil Lennon left in rather embarrassing circumstances.

The Hoops were considerably off the pace and ended the campaign without a trophy to their name. Thus, the pressure on Postecoglou’s shoulders should be enormous.

Celtic are in desperate need of a rebuild and with Scott Brown, another famous face at Paradise to leave, a leadership void and a space in midfield needs to be filled.

Liam Shaw will arrive from Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer at the end of the month but at the age of just 20, it would be foolish to entrust him immediately.

One player touted with a switch to Paradise has been Jack Wilshere. The 34-cap Englishman is at the opposite end of his career to Shaw but shouldn’t be considered by Celtic.

Wilshere is out of contract with Bournemouth this summer and is available on a free transfer but despite his enormous technical qualities, he carries around some excess baggage.

Speaking to This is Futbol last month, Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie had the following to say regarding the 29-year-old’s future: “I don’t think he’d be one that I would certainly be looking at taking particularly. He’s gone into the Championship and I think people have always labelled the Championship as a similar sort of level as the Scottish Premiership, so you’ve got to ask yourself would he fit the bill?”

Hendrie added: “I’m not too sure about that. And that’d be a big, big question mark for me, if he would fit the bill.”

The pundit is spot on his assessment, particularly when you consider his salary demands and his injury record.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-faria-postecoglou-howe-elyounoussi” title= “Read the latest Celtic news!”]

He earned £110k-per-week at West Ham last season and although he took a significant drop in order to join the Cherries, his demands could be out of the reach for Celtic are willing to pay.

Described as the most “overrated” player on the planet by Roy Keane, Wilshere managed to play 18 times for Bournemouth after signing a short contract in January but there are still concerns over his long-term fitness.

The former Arsenal star has suffered 18 different injuries during his career and hasn’t managed to feature in more than 30 games in a single campaign for a decade.

Couple those two factors together and it could make you think of a certain Derk Boerrigter.

The Dutch forward signed for Bhoys in 2013 but only made 26 appearances in a three-year spell, featuring for a grand total of 514 minutes.

On a salary of £12k-per-week, he cost the Glaswegian a considerable amount when you consider his awful injury record.

According to the player, Celtic even made him play through his fitness issues; “Celtic destroyed my career by making me play even though I was injured. That was despite me repeatedly telling them it was not a good idea,” he said back in 2018.

Celtic made a mistake by signing the forward, one they cannot afford to repeat with Wilshere now Postecoglou is at the helm.

He must be allowed to devise his own list of targets.

AND in other news, Celtic eye move for “brilliant” 47-goal star, he’d be a fantastic Edouard successor…

Page birth centennial occurred this week

The hundredth anniversary of the birth of New Zealand cricket great ML “Curly” Page fell this week

Matthew Appleby09-May-2002The hundredth anniversary of the birth of New Zealand cricket great ML “Curly” Page fell this week. The last survivor of the ground-breaking 1927 tour to England, Page died in 1987, aged 84.Born Milford Laurensen Page in Lyttelton in 1902, he went on to be one of a select group of double internationals. He played half-back for the All Blacks in the third Test against New South Wales in 1928 at Christchurch, whilst another All Black team were touring South Africa. He was a schoolboy prodigy in the mould of near-contemporary Tom Lowry, but young Curly went to Christchurch Boys’ High School, rather than the fee-paying Christ’s College of “born to the purple” Lowry. The scene of the development of future Test captains Walter Hadlee and Lee Germon, as well as Ian Cromb, Dayle and Richard Hadlee and Chris Cairns, Page was encouraged towards the first XI at school by Bob Burns, soon-to-be Canterbury’s genial wicket-keeper, who was two years Page’s senior at school. He played against the 1920/21 Australians for Canterbury while still at school. After school, he spent six years near Darfield, birthplace of future New Zealand captain John Wright, for health reasons, then returned to become a dual international within a year. He was first selected for New Zealand’s unofficial series against the Melbourne Cricket Club in 1926/27, scoring 207 runs in four innings, to win selection for the Lowry-led 1927 first full New Zealand tour of England.Renowned for his sportsmanship, Page led New Zealand on their 1937 tour to England after being vice-captain in 1931’s tour under Lowry. In 1930, he scored one and 21 in New Zealand’s first Test match, followed by 67 and 32 in the second. In 1931, Page made 104 in 220 minutes in what Arthur Carman called “arguably New Zealand’s proudest batting achievement to date” at Lord’s on New Zealand’s first Test appearance in England. By 1937, Page had retired temporarily in 1935/36, and was 34 and past his best.Dick Brittenden wrote, “Page had a hard row to sow that summer. Had the catching of his colleagues matched his own high standard, he might have given New Zealand its first Test win in the second of the series at Manchester.” As it was, with England just 152 runs ahead and with seven wickets down, they were “let off the hook” according to Men in White, with Freddie Brown dropped three times before he had made 21. He went on to top-score with 57. Tom Goddard “seemed to intimidate tentative batsmen” and took six for 29. He bowled Page for two.An admirer of Page’s was the second-last survivor of the 1927 pioneers, Bill Cunningham. “He could handle a side well under any conditions. He was a genuine man, great to play under,” said the Canterbury fast bowler. EG Garbutt wrote that Page “often pocketed catches with the sleight-of-hand of a Kreskin.”Brittenden described Page as a “quiet, modest, kind, always painstakingly fair in his assessment of a player or situation. He stood, indeed, for all that was best in one of New Zealand cricket’s golden ages.”
