Dominic Drakes: 'I don't want to look back and say I had a better 2021 than 2022. I don't want to be stagnant'

The CPL winner, who’s hoping to make his West Indies debut next month, wants to build on his experiences in the IPL, the T20 World Cup, and the T10

Deivarayan Muthu29-Nov-2021″Little Vassy, you think you could bat here?”This was Chris Gayle to Dominic Drakes after St Kitts and Nevis Patriots were reduced to 75 for 4, chasing 160 in the CPL final in September this year. Drakes, promoted ahead of Fabian Allen, took on the likes of Wahab Riaz and Kesrick Williams, scoring an unbeaten 24-ball 48 to steer Patriots to their first CPL title. At the post-match presentation, Drakes said that his dad, Vasbert, the former West Indies allrounder, had been more nervous than himself while watching the action from Barbados.Drakes has enjoyed a whirlwind rise in the past few months and is set to become a West Indies international after being called up to the T20I squad touring Pakistan in December.A day after his CPL title-winning exploits, Drakes flew to the UAE to join Mumbai Indians as a net bowler for the second leg of IPL 2021. While he was there, Chennai Super Kings roped him in as a late replacement for the injured Sam Curran, and Drakes went on to win another T20 title in the space of a month (although he didn’t feature in any games). And then he joined West Indies’ T20 World Cup squad as a net bowler.

He’s still in the UAE, now part of the Delhi Bulls squad in the Abu Dhabi T10 league, where he has reunited with his Patriots captain Dwayne Bravo and is eyeing his third title in nearly three months.”I wouldn’t say [I’m] a champion [like Bravo] yet. It’s a stretch,” Drakes says. “If someone told me at the start of the year, you would win CPL, you’d go the IPL, Delhi Bulls, I’d have asked: ‘Are you crazy?’ Everything happens so quickly, and wow, sometimes I don’t believe it, honestly. Even at CSK, I felt so welcomed – like you belong there and you’ve been there for years. Here at the Bulls too, the team environment is amazing.”Ten [runs per over] on a day is going good with the ball [in T10]. If I’ve to bat, I’ve to go for more [boundaries] from the first ball to help out the team. It’s challenging to bowl, but exciting to play and watch.”The temperatures are much cooler now than when I joined the IPL for sure. I’m like: ‘Am I in a different place?’ When I came down for practice the first day, I felt like, is it a little chill here for the first time ().”Drakes can hit sixes lower down the order, like he showed in the CPL final, and he can be a pinch-hitting No. 3, like he showed against Deccan Gladiators in the T10. He can bowl the back-of-the-hand slower ball in addition to the standard offcutter, which often dips. His tall frame and high-arm release enable him to find extra bounce from back of a length or short of a length. Plus, he’s a livewire on the field, often patrolling the boundary hotspots.Related

Drakes’ multi-dimensional skills prompted Bravo to earmark him as one of the allrounders who could replace him in West Indies’ T20I side.”His skippership is absolutely amazing,” Drakes says of Bravo. “He’s always believed in his players and I really look up to him. How he goes about his training, how he goes about his diet at such an old – I don’t want to call him old, but old in terms of cricket years. He has everything down to a tee. Honestly, I’d love to mimic him – his training and stuff.”He’s always had confidence in me, and once you have that confidence from your skipper, you could do anything. He helped me with little things in my game – not just skills but also the mental aspect of the game. He tells me, ‘Be confident and always know what you’re doing and take it one ball at a time.’ That has really helped me.”Drakes is particularly excited to be playing alongside Romario Shepherd, another seam-bowling allrounder who Bravo believes has the potential to slip into his T20I shoes. After bagging 18 wickets in nine games in the CPL, Shepherd has been lethal with the bat in the T10, clubbing an unbeaten 11-ball 39 against Team Abu Dhabi and an unbeaten ten-ball 26 against Gladiators.”He’s amazing and an extremely hard-working cricketer,” Drakes says of Shepherd. “If you look at his performances in the CPL, he had, like, second-most wickets and every time he had a chance, he contributed with the bat, and he’s a phenomenal fielder. Here in T10, if you look at his bowling, he’s really taken it on. I don’t think he went at over ten [runs an over] yet – maybe the odd game.”Drakes on Bravo (right), who captained him in the CPL and the T10: “He’s always believed in his players and I really look up to him. I’d love to mimic him – his training and stuff”•Abu Dhabi T10Drakes’ calendar may be packed right now, but things were a lot different earlier this year. He played only one match in West Indies’ domestic Super50 Cup for Barbados before being ruled out of the rest of the tournament with an ACL tear. Around the same time, he had to deal with the passing of someone close to him.”It was extremely difficult,” he says. “In February, I felt really good and my pace was up, and I bowled a couple of overs and came back at the death. Then I went to dive at a ball at one point. Going back to the hotel room, the physio was telling me I would need surgery and it will take nine months. That was not a very good place. That was at the height of Covid as well – come home by yourself, quarantine. You had a whole week to think about it.”When Patriots’ team management sat down with Drakes before the start of the CPL, they were impressed with his resolve and desire to get fit and succeed despite his recent turmoil. At that point, Drakes wasn’t a CPL regular either. After failing to defend 16 off the final over for the Barbados franchise (then Tridents) on CPL debut in 2018, with his father watching from the dugout as Barbados’ assistant coach, Drakes featured in only seven matches until the start of CPL 2021.He was picked by Patriots in 2019 and retained as their emerging player despite the uncertainty surrounding his fitness and the CPL in general due to Covid. He overcame those fitness concerns and became one of Patriots’ main players in 2021.”From a physical standpoint, we were not able to do much with Drakes,” says Malolan Rangarajan, Patriots’ assistant coach. “The fact that the CPL was a little bit postponed gave him more time to recover and work on his fitness. We were absolutely certain of retaining Drakes – [it] was a no-brainer. We knew the skills he possesses and how he would be able to provide us with that point of difference. If you have watched him in previous years, even though he didn’t have performances like last season, he did show sparks of his ability, both with bat and ball.Drakes took 16 wickets in the CPL and is currently at the top of the charts for Delhi Bulls in the T10 league•CPL T20/ Getty Images”In one of our get-together sessions mid-season, him and Josh [West Indies keeper Joshua Da Silva] and myself sat together and talked about various things. Drakes was very grounded, and they were obsessed to become better cricketers. Whatever he’s getting today is a by-product of that mindset.”If you’d have told him in August that in November-December you’ll be playing in maroon [for West Indies], he’d have laughed it off. I just credit the guy’s determination and he repaid the faith we had in him.”Drakes repaid that faith in spades in the final against St Lucia Kings. On debut in 2018, it was Allen who laid into him in that final over. Three years later, Drakes was bumped up ahead of Patriots’ gun finisher, partly in order to maintain a left-right combination, with Bravo in the middle. With Wahab bowling into the pitch and firing in yorkers, Drakes sat deep in the crease and, once he got the leverage, maintained a strong base and swung for the hills. When Wahab thumped a heavy length and shifted his lines wide of off, Drakes’ foot was out of position, but he still extended his hands and crunched the ball over extra cover for six – a candidate for the shot of the tournament.Drakes has spent most of his time in the UAE since the CPL final, but ahead of his first T10 stint with Bulls, he returned home to Barbados and relived his CPL heroics with his parents.”He’s always nervous,” Drakes says of his father. “Even coming down to T10, he’s like: ‘Make sure, you got this, got that.’ I say: ‘Yes, Daddy, I understand’ (). We actually sat home and watched [the CPL final] it as a family with my mom. After each ball, he would tell me how he was feeling at that time and stuff like that.”That most exciting part of it was when he said my mom was extremely nervous too (). He said that the one part he could never forget was the last ball, because Roston Chase was playing for St Lucia – he plays for Barbados [in domestic cricket]. So a majority of Bajans were watching the game. He said for that one ball everything stopped in Barbados. He couldn’t even hear a car pass.”While Drakes is currently the top wicket-taker for Bulls in the T10 league, with nine wickets from six innings at an economy rate of 9.81, he is yet to fire like can with the bat.Hitting sixes on demand is a difficult skill, more so in T10 cricket, and Drakes says he just goes back to the basics to get it right.”Even at the nets, I don’t try to smash it from the first ball. I try and make sure I’m in a right position – head over ball – and just try and let the instincts take over.”Drakes is keen to avoid complacency and hopes to build on his gains in the past four months. It may not be long before “Little Vassy” becomes Big Vassy.”For me, it’s always trying to be better and not sit back and relaxing,” Drakes says. “I don’t want to look back and say I had a better 2021 than 2022. I always want to be better than last year and better than my last performance. I don’t want to be stagnant – just want to keep training as hard.”

Chameera, Mishara take Sri Lanka to the final with a thrilling win

Dushmantha Chameera held his nerve in a clutch final over to ensure Sri Lanka did not throw away a win they had spent the rest of the evening working for. He conceded three runs in the final over, building on a magnificent opening spell to deny Pakistan victory by six runs in a 184-run chase. The stakes were higher for Sri Lanka than they were for Pakistan, with a victory required for a place in the final, or it would be Zimbabwe playing that game on Saturday. And Sri Lanka played with a hunger they have rediscovered since they finally won a game on Pakistan soil on Tuesday. Kusal Mendis and Kamil Mishara’s 36-ball 66-run stand got them off to a flier, with Mishara ending up with 76 off 48 balls, and cameos lower down the order got them to 184.Right from the outset, Chameera hampered Pakistan with three top-order wickets in his first two overs. The chase looked as good as dead after the loss of the first four, with 43 runs on the board, but captain Salman Ali Agha’s unbeaten half-century kept Pakistan fighting on until the bitter end.A 56-run stand between Salman and Usman Khan brought Pakistan back into contention, and Mohammad Nawaz brought Pakistan right to the brink. The hosts were favourites when a six over cover reduced the equation to 10 in the final over, but Chameera got a wicket, nailed his Yorkers and squeezed Pakistan out.

Mendis, Mishara nail the early overs

Earlier in the evening, Pakistan strangled Sri Lanka in the first three overs. It started with a beautiful delivery Salman Mirza kissing Pathum Nissanka’s off bail. But when Faheem Ashraf was thrown the ball for the fourth over, Kusal Mendis picked his moment. Three boundaries saw helped him plunder 16, and Mohammad Wasim disappeared for 15 more when he replaced Ashraf for the powerplay’s final over.Even the spreading of the field struggled to contain Mendis and Mishara. When Nawaz came to bowl in the eighth over, Mendis cut him for four before Kamil Mishara slapped him for six. A late flurry put Sri Lanka on course to a match-defending total.

Salman stakes a T20I case

Salman has played every single Pakistan game this year, but has never convinced as a T20 batter. Today, finding himself in the sort of situation where what was required of him closely matched his best attributes, the Pakistan captain got stuck in. He began sedately, as he tends to do, but then worked himself into touch and took the game deep. Through the middle overs, his ability to play spin was on full display as the boundaries came regularly enough and the runs kept ticking over. When Sri Lanka turned to pace, Salman kept the pressure up, picking up 10 off Dasun Shanaka, smashing Eshan Malinga for six to keep Pakistan on track. Increasingly, by the end, Sri Lanka’s ability to starve Salman of the strike would prove crucial to holding Pakistan at bay; the final three overs, Salman was at the non-striker’s end for all but five balls, with his unbeaten heroics going in vain.

Chameera guts Pakistan

Pakistan felt they had built up a steady opening stand with Saim Ayub and Sahibzada Farhan setting up a platform in the powerplay in the first three overs. It was from that point onwards that Sri Lanka had cut loose in their innings, and the home openers were positioning themselves to do the same. But then, along came fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera. His extra pace beat Farhan for timing and forced him into dinking one straight to cover. The big wicket came two balls later, when a touch of inconsistent bounce had the ball strike Babar Azam below the knee roll, sending him back for a second duck in four innings. Another two balls later, a length delivery grew big on Fakhar Zaman, who skied it straight to midwicket. Pakistan had suddenly lost four wickets in ten balls, and following the end of the over, Chameera’s figures read 2-0-3-3.After conceding 14 in his third over when Pakistan were on the charge, Sri Lanka’s hopes of victory were slipping away. Pakistan needed ten to win with Agha still set. Chameera rolled his fingers over two length balls to start off and allowed just three in the first three balls, but it was the killer yorkers that followed which sealed the deal. Three deliveries that landed on the batters’ toes got rid of Ashraf, and did not leak a single run to spark celebrations in the Sri Lankan camp.

Not just Salah: £150k-per-week Liverpool star should be asking to leave

Liverpool have turned a corner, now five matches unbeaten in all competitions and with two wins on the trot after dispatching Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield.

Arne Slot’s team have climbed up to sixth place in the Premier League, still a distance behind table-toppers Arsenal, who sit ten points ahead of the champions, whose brace of own goals against Wolves later in the day retightened their grip on top spot. .

Some would say that that is an unassailable lead over the Merseysiders, but Liverpool do have a squad capable of competing and beating Mikel Arteta’s side – again – with the trip to the Emirates in less than a month one to watch, for sure.

Of course, after such abject results and performances, Slot’s side have so much work still to do, and if Saturday’s win told us anything, it’s that they would be worse off if they were to lose Mohamed Salah after the African Cup of Nations.

Salah's return to Liverpool action

To say it’s been a turbulent week for Salah at Liverpool would be an understatement. Last weekend, the Egyptian’s inflammatory outburst at Elland Road cast his future at the club into doubt.

The 33-year-old had been dropped to the bench for three successive matches, and after being kept on the sidelines as Liverpool capitulated against Leeds United, he paused at the mixer and unleashed an incredible series of comments concerning a broken relationship with the head coach.

He was dropped from the squad that beat Inter Milan entirely, and he started from the bench once again at Anfield, coming into the fray before half an hour against the Seagulls and whipping in the corner that Hugo Ekitike headed home for his second brace in a row.

This has created an intense air of doubt over Salah’s future at the club, with suitors from the Saudi Pro League circling.

But Liverpool simply cannot let their talisman leave. Even though he’s been so far out of sorts, Salah has still maintained a degree of prolificness in the final third, only trumped by Ekitike.

That’s a marker of Liverpool’s woes, the lack of balance and fluency across Slot’s frontline, but it also shows how important it is that the legendary winger is not cast aside at the campaign’s midpoint.

However, whether that is the same for another attacker is another question.

Liverpool's fringe forward must be pushing to leave

barring Ekitike, Liverpool’s new forwards have struggled to gel together this season. Salah too. However, who can argue against Federico Chiesa’s impact and tenacity when brought off the bench throughout the campaign?

The 27-year-old forward has yet to start in the Premier League or the Champions League this season, but he scored the winner in his side’s season opener against Bournemouth and scoring and assisting again in defeats against Crystal Palace and Manchester United. In the Carabao Cup, he claimed two assists against Southampton in a Man of the Match display.

But the £150k-per-week star must be reaching the end of his tether, having been used sparingly right since joining the Anfield side from Juventus for a cut-price £12.5m deal in August 2024.

Like Salah, the Italy international may be looking for the exit door, and it would be hard to blame him if it were so. Though Salah’s own case – and confirmed absence over the next month due to AFCON – suggests Chiesa will earn further chances to showcase his skills, Jeremie Frimpong is soon to return from injury, Liverpool may well be active in the transfer market.

One side of the argument would draw attention to Salah’s potential departure in January, or maybe at the end of the season. Regardless, the £400k-per-week superstar is playing through his penultimate year on Merseyside at the latest.

However, FSG have a vested interest in Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo, and his arrival would only knock Chiesa further down the pecking order.

On one side of the fence, Chiesa’s mentality and attitude have been impeccable despite his limited match action this season, but Chiesa surely can’t brook many more oversights from Slot. He needs to play, and with the January transfer window right around the corner, the Italian might just look for an exit.

The new Rice: Arsenal have a Hale Ender who's like "Vieira and Diaby"

Arsenal are well equipped to go all the way in their battle for the Premier League title this season, having brushed up their squad after three successive second-place finishes.

But while the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi and Eberechi Eze have all established themselves as star members after big-money summer transfers, Mikel Arteta has ensured the Hale End academy has remained as important and influential as it has ever been, with some talented teenagers intermingled with the senior squad in north London.

Under Arteta’s wing, Arsenal have made incremental progress, with silverware the only thing missing since the Spanish coach replaced Unai Emery in 2019 and took his squad to the FA Cup final and won the trophy.

He has maintained his upward trajectory by entrusting Arsenal’s academy with regular opportunities.

Arsenal have so many exciting stars looking to establish themselves as the next Bukayo Saka or the new Declan Rice. The latter might not have cut his teeth with the Gunners, but they are certainly reaping the rewards.

Declan Rice's journey to superstardom

Rice is one of the best midfielders in the world. He is one of the first names on the team sheet for both club and country, and, aged 26, he has matured into a leader as well as a technical and athletic phenomenon.

It all started at West Ham United.

David Moyes nurtured his young protege to the fore and shaped him into the player he is today. Arsenal paid £105m for the Hammers man’s signature in 2023, with Rice having led his side to the Conference League title a month before.

Once a member of Chelsea’s Cobham academy, Rice is unquestionably one of the most talented Englishmen to have emerged in recent years, having evolved from a defender to a six to a first-class all-rounder.

The north London club are well stocked in the engine room, but with the likes of Myles Lewis-Skelly, Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri all emerging from Hale End in recent years, it might be nice to see an all-action midfielder burst onto the scene and help continue Arteta’s remarkable rise.

After all, who better to learn from than Rice?

Jack Wilshere’s declaration that Rice is a one-of-a-kind player and an inspiration and teacher for someone like Dowman is right on the money, but there’s actually an exciting Hale End midfielder who could more beneficially absorb the fruits of the Three Lions star’s labours over the coming months and years.

Arsenal's new version of Rice

Rice is one of the best English midfielders of his generation, and it’s for this reason that teenager Ife Ibrahim will be keen to take a leaf or two from the 26-year-old’s book as he looks to make his way from the Emirates academy into Arteta’s senior squad.

The London-born prospect has attracted praise for his performances at youth level this season and has enjoyed his first two caps for England U18s, having made his bow only a few weeks ago.

With the right moves over the next few years, Ibrahim could be just the player to learn from Rice and develop into a similarly special midfielder at the highest level, with the 17-year-old having already edged his way into U21 action at Arsenal despite his youth an inexperience.

Said to have a bit of “Vieira and Diaby” about him by analyst Harvey Diamonds, the rangy midfielder is adept at breaking up play and keeping things ticking from the base of the centre. He might not be the flashiest, but this is the kid of counterpoint you need against, say, someone like Nwaneri up ahead, creating and adding to the attack.

Whether Ibrahim even scratches the same ballpark as Rice in the future is, of course, another question entirely, but he has the physicality and progressive nature to succeed in the Premier League and learn some tricks from the superstar’s trade.

Having featured 54 times for Arsenal’s various development levels, Ibrahim has plenty of experience under his belt and has even featured three times against senior oppposition, in the EFL Trophy, this season, with data from Sofascore showing us that he won 59% of his duels across those three outings, averaging two interceptions per game and completing 87% of his passes. The teenager’s heat map suggests he covered plenty of ground across the midfield, stretching back to cover his defenders and barrelling forward when the chance presented itself.

This is all to say that Arsenal have a gem on their hands, one of many glittering underneath the surface level of Arteta’s squad. Given the need for a physical profile at number six to contrast with the elegance of Zubimendi, it might just be that Arteta strikes the jackpot once again with a talented academy star, free to grow into their skin and feeling the trust from the boss.

As with Rice (and Vieira, for that matter), Ibrahim appears to have a propensity for using his muscular frame and sharp bursts of pace to hold off opponents and dart upfield.

Arsenal youth correspondent Jeorge Bird has already confirmed that Arteta has welcomed the youngster into some senior training sessions over the past year, clearly with a view toward full integration down the line.

It wouldn’t be the first time Arteta has done such a thing.

Celtic: New transfer twist revealed on Andy Robertson and free Parkhead move

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has been linked with a free transfer to Celtic next summer and now a fresh claim has dropped over a potential 2026 switch.

The 31-year-old has enjoyed a glittering career, winning the Champions League and Premier League with the Reds, and proving to be one of the standout left-backs of his generation.

Robertson is also the current captain of Scotland, hopefully leading the troops into the 2026 World Cup, and his current Liverpool deal expires at the end of this season.

The veteran defender has been linked with a move to Celtic in recent weeks, with one report claiming that he is open to the idea of signing a pre-contract agreement in January and that Parkhead talks were planned. He grew up supporting the Hoops, so a move there could be a perfect way for his career to end.

Robertson has a huge decision to make, especially as he has won his place back in Liverpool’s starting lineup over Milos Kerkez of late, but the lure of heading to Parkhead is something that may appeal, given his history.

New update on Andy Robertson joining Celtic

Now, speaking to 67 Hail Hail, journalist Graeme Bailey played down rumours of Robertson joining Celtic, saying he is likely to remain at Liverpool beyond next summer, in a new twist.

This is a disappointing update for Celtic fans, with many no doubt liking the idea of Robertson finishing his career at the club, given his brilliance as a footballer.

Approach imminent: Manager with 209 wins to 70 losses excited by Celtic

The Bhoys appear to have made their move as they target a permanent successor to Martin O’Neill.

BySean Markus Clifford Nov 10, 2025

At 31 years of age, he is still far from old, and combines a winning mentality with defensive and attacking quality down the left flank, with journalist Henry Winter recently lauding the “intensity” that he brings for the Reds.

Hopefully, the situation changes in the coming months, with Robertson deciding that a new challenge makes sense, but in truth, it does feel more likely that he will extend his stay at Liverpool on a short-term basis. That’s not to say an eventual move to Celtic won’t happen, though.

Not Zinchenko: Dyche could now drop “incredible” Nottingham Forest star

It’s not even November yet, and Nottingham Forest have already gone through two managers in quick succession.

The ever enigmatic and controversial Evangelos Marinakis must have thought that results would instantly turn when ditching Nuno Espirito Santo for Ange Postecoglou, but after his disastrous 39 days at the helm pushed the Tricky Trees further into the relegation spaces in the Premier League, the former Tottenham Hotspur boss ended up being brutally dismissed.

Now, it’s Sean Dyche’s turn to come in and – hopefully – be a safe pair of hands at the City Ground, with a 2-0 victory over Porto on his managerial debut last time out in the Europa League instantly calming any jitters.

It’s the bread and butter of the Premier League that next awaits the ex-Burnley boss as a tough away trip to AFC Bournemouth beckons, with Oleksandr Zinchenko potentially being out injured for this journey to the South Coast, after hobbling off mid-week.

Even if he wasn’t in the treatment room, his starting spot might well have been at risk…

Why Zinchenko is likely to be dropped

It does sound as if the four-time Premier League title winner will be touch-and-go surrounding his availability right up until the teams are announced later today.

If there are any lingering doubts, Dyche won’t feel too uncomfortable in throwing Nicolo Savona into the first-team mix in his place, with the 22-year-old summer recruit from Juventus sticking out as a positive influence against Porto on Thursday night, when replacing the injury-stricken Ukrainian.

Ultimately, the number 37 would ensure a 2-0 win was secured against Porto, when a rare foray forward from the Italian would result in a penalty kick being given, which was then coolly dispatched to hand Dyche a debut win in the dug-out.

The former Juventus youngster will surely fancy his chances of retaining a first-team spot, therefore, with all 100% of his duels being successfully won, too, further showing off a defender that’s content at doing the dirty work, which Dyche, who is known to be an attritional manager in style, will love.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

To make matters worse for his ex-Manchester City counterpart, Zinchenko has already picked up three defeats donning Garibaldi Red from just six appearances, with his new manager also potentially preparing to axe this other Forest figure, even though the attacker in question impressed in the Europa League.

Dyche could ruthlessly drop "incredible" star

Although their Premier League form has fallen off a cliff, Forest have looked far more at home in European competitions this season, with a win and a draw collected from their opening three clashes in the Europa League.

They have Igor Jesus to also thank for that confidence-boosting win being secured against Porto, with the Brazilian now up to three goals exclusively in this competition for his new employers, on top of also collecting a brace in the EFL Cup when Postecoglou was still around.

However, despite Jesus living up to his billing as an “incredible” finisher of chances – that was once handed to him by journalist Zach Lowy – up against the likes of the Portuguese giants, he remains without a goal in the Premier League, with Dyche perhaps wary that the number 19 could fold in front of goal again if he’s retained for the away day at the Cherries.

In Jesus’ defence, he is yet to be handed a start in the daunting division, but after hitting the woodwork against Chelsea from a 45-minute cameo, which also saw him win just one duel, Dyche might well opt to start Taiwo Awoniyi in his place instead, who at least has 17 Premier League goals next to his name, away from being frozen out of the side under previous regimes.

In an even more ideal reality, the 54-year-old could have Chris Wood back available for this tie on the South Coast – having sat out the clash versus Porto through injury – with the New Zealand workhorse already amassing 53 goals under Dyche’s watchful eye when the pair were together at Burnley, per Transfermarkt.

It does look like a bold call from the outside looking in, considering Jesus ensured Dyche’s start at Forest was a victorious one. But, with his ropey Premier League record to date, and other options at the Forest boss’ disposal who could cause Bournemouth more issues, the South American might well drop out of the XI alongside Zinchenko.

A equipe encara o Fluminense no Maracanã.

Value has risen by 228%: Chelsea star looks like "Lampard, Drogba & Hazard"

Things are looking up for Chelsea at the moment.

Enzo Maresca’s side put a stop to their middling form in the Premier League with their incredible 2-1 over Liverpool on the weekend.

It was the sort of performance and result that could see them now go on a winning run in the after the international break.

Moreover, with the talent Todd Boehly and Co have added to the squad, plus someone soon to return whose valuation has exploded at Stamford Bridge, there is no reason the Blues couldn’t win something again this year.

How Todd Boehly's most significant signings are faring

Since taking charge of the club in 2022, Boehly and then Clearlake have invested substantial sums of money in players, and while not all have succeeded, some of Maresca’s most important players have joined under his leadership.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

For example, Moises Caicedo, who cost around £115m, is now finally looked upon as one of the very best midfielders in the Premier League, someone capable of breaking up opposition attacks and then kickstarting them for his team.

Moreover, he seems only capable of scoring absolute bangers.

It’s been a little tougher to win people over for Enzo Fernández, who also cost over £100m, but he played himself into some brilliant form by the end of last season, and seems to be getting better with each passing game this season.

Furthermore, even when he’s not playing at his best, he has been able to pop up with a goal involvement, scoring three times and providing one assist in seven league games so far this season.

Then there are his underlying numbers, which help illustrate the extent of his influence over games, as according to FBref, he ranks in the top 2% of midfielders in the Premier League this season for expected goals, the top 6% for passes into the penalty area and goal-creating actions, all per 90.

Someone who endured a tough start to life in West London, but is now as undroppable as Caicedo, is Marc Cucurella.

The Spanish left-back has been sensational for the Pensioners for well over a year now, and has proven himself to be as brilliant at the defensive side of being a full-back as he is at the offensive side.

He was excellent against the Reds at the weekend and provided the assist for Estevao’s late-late winner.

However, while these three are clear examples of successful signings under the club’s new ownership, there is one international who has become the jewel in the crown, someone whose value has exploded since moving to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea's best signing under Boehly

It’ll likely come as no surprise at all that the signing in question is none other than Cole Palmer.

The former Manchester City star joined the club in the summer of 2023 for a fee of around £42.5m, including add-ons, and according to the CIES Football Observatory, is now worth up to €161m, which is about £139.5m.

In other words, the Englishman’s valuation has skyrocketed a whopping 228% in just over two years, and while that might sound absurd, it’s an increase that simply mirrors the international’s immense talent and importance to this Blues side.

For example, since making the move, the 23-year-old game-changer has made 101 appearances for the club, totalling 8095 minutes, in which he has scored 45 goals and provided 29 assists.

That translates to a world-class average of a goal involvement every 1.36 games, or every 109.39 minutes, which would be an outrageous rate of return for a number nine, but is all the more impressive considering he primarily plays on the right or in attacking midfield.

Moreover, he isn’t some flattrack bully who scores meaningless goals; he’s someone who loves the biggest stage, as he demonstrated in the Club World Cup final, with a brace and assist against Champions League champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Finally, in addition to the sheer number of goals and the important big-game goals, the former City ace is also a great entertainer, someone capable of turning defenders inside out and getting the crowd on their feet.

It’s an outlandish comparison to make, but there is certainly an element of truth in the statement from GOAL’s Sean Walsh that he’s like “Lampard, Drogba & Hazard all in one.”

Ultimately, Chelsea have made their fair share of poor signings over the last three years or so, but they’ve also made some world-class additions, none more so than Palmer.

Chelsea lost a homegrown Estevao for £0, now he's "one of the world's best"

The sensational talent would be perfect for Chelsea and could help push Estevao to be even better.

Nuno can instantly win fans over by dropping Kilman for West Ham "animal"

West Ham United officially confirmed that Graham Potter had been relieved of his duties at the London Stadium on Saturday, less than 24 hours after his pre-match press conference ahead of the Everton match.

The Hammers did not waste much time in finding a replacement for the English head coach, though, as Nuno Espirito Santo was unveiled later on in the day.

Sacked by Nottingham Forest earlier this season, after a breakdown in his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis, the Portuguese boss steps straight in for the game against the Toffees on Monday night.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Forest boss will be hoping to instantly win the supporters over in his first game, and he should drop Max Kilman from the side in order to do that.

Why Max Kilman should be dropped

West Ham splashed a whopping £40m fee to sign the English central defender from Premier League rivals Wolves in the summer of 2024, hoping to improve their backline.

Unfortunately, the Hammers ended the season with 62 goals conceded in 38 league games. Kilman, per Sofascore, ended the campaign with a worrying four errors that led to shots and two errors that led to goals for the opposition, which shows that he was prone to making mistakes at the back.

So far this season, Kilman has started all five games in the league and West Ham had conceded the most goals in the division (13) before Saturday’s matches.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The left-footed defender has lost 56% of his ground duels in the top-flight this season, per Sofascore, and has not looked assured at all in the heart of the defence, which is why Nuno must drop him from the XI for the trip to the Hill Dickinson.

Such has been the nature of his poor performances, West Ham Transfers – a fan account with over 77k followers – posted on X that Kilman is “worse than Roger Johnson”, which led to many supporters replying in agreement, illustrating how a section of the fanbase feel about the defender.

The West Ham player who should replace Max Kilman

In order to keep the balance of the team, the new West Ham boss should bring Igor Julio into the starting line-up for his debut for the club in the left-sided centre-back role.

Whether Nuno goes with a back three or a back four, a left-footed centre-back will be needed for balance when playing out from the back, which is why the Brighton loanee could slot in as a replacement for Kilman.

The Brazilian star, who was hailed as an “animal” by former coach Inigo Calderón, played for Brighton in the League Cup against Oxford earlier this season and showcased his aggressive defending.

As you can see in the table above, Igor won seven of his nine duels, including six of his seven ground duels, and this suggests that he could be much stronger than Kilman, who has been dominated on the deck this season, at the back for the Hammers.

The left-footed defender was also unbeaten in all three of the Premier League matches that he featured in for Brighton in the second half of last season, including a win against Spurs and draws with Arsenal and Aston Villa.

Igor, who started ten times in the top-flight last term, is a dominant defender who has Premier League experience under his belt, which is why Nuno should not have any concerns about throwing him straight into the action against West Ham.

Given how bad the defence has been this season, and how some supporters have viewed Kilman’s performances, bringing the Brazilian titan into the team to lead the Hammers to a defensive masterclass against Everton could instantly get fans onside for Nuno.
