Ange must unleash "incredible" Spurs star who’s their very own Dybala

As is to be expected by now, this season has been another one full of ups and downs for Tottenham Hotspur.

Ange Postecoglou’s side looked like one primed for a crisis following their loss to Ipswich Town earlier this month but then quashed any such talk with an emphatic 4-0 win away to Manchester City on Sunday.

Based on their last performance, the Lilywhites are a side that not many teams would want to play at the moment, and they should be taking that confidence into their Europa League clash with Roma tonight.

Roma's Paulo Dybala

That said, the Italian giants should not be underestimated as they have some serious talents of their own, including the incredibly exciting Paulo Dybala, but Ange might already have his own version of the Argentine in his squad that must start.

Dybala's links to Spurs

As many Spurs fans will be well aware, Roma’s Dybala is a player who has been touted for a move to N17 on several occasions over the years, starting back in 2019.

Roma's Paulo Dybala

One of the biggest transfer sagas that summer was the Argentine’s supposed move to the Lilywhites, and according to a report from Sky Sports News, the North Londoners had actually agreed on a £64.4m fee with Juventus.

However, just a day later, once the fans were excited about the supremely gifted star’s potential arrival, the Serie A side stopped the transfer over an inability to get an adequate replacement.

Then, a few years later, when the former Palermo ace was finally set to leave the Old Lady, Tottenham were once again said to be interested in signing him, only for Roma, who were managed by former Spurs boss José Mourinho at the time, to swoop in and secure the talented attacker’s signature themselves.

Now the Laguna Larga-born star is 31 years old and settled in Rome; it seems like the Lilywhites will never get their man, although there’s a dynamic attacker in Postecoglou’s squad who could be their answer to him.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Spurs' own Dybala

Okay, so there are a few candidates for this tag in the current Spurs squad, from Dejan Kulusevski to possibly even Lucas Bergvall, should he continue to develop in the way he is.

However, the player we are talking about is James Maddison, and there are two reasons for this.

The first is that, like the Roma ace, the Englishman is adept at scoring goals and setting up his teammates with exquisite passes.

For example, in his 46 appearances for Spurs thus far, the “incredible” attacker, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has scored nine goals and provided 13 assists, equating to a goal involvement every 2.09 games.

Likewise, during his time with the capital club, the former Juve ace has scored 36 goals and provided 18 assists in 90 appearances, which equates to a goal involvement on average every 1.66 games.

The second similarity is where the pair plays.

When we look at the former Leicester City star’s heatmap, we see that he spends most of his time on the left-hand side, between the halfway line and the penalty area.

Interestingly, the five-time Serie A winner occupies the same space, just on the right-hand side, showing that the pair are about as attacking as a midfielder can get without occupying the same areas as their strikers do.

Lastly, while it’s not possible to quantify, both players are sensationally entertaining to watch, and while they may make a mistake here and there, you know that they will also try and make something happen at some point.

Ultimately, we’ll never know just how good Spurs could have been with Dybala in the team, but they have someone similar in Maddison.

Therefore, Postecoglou must make sure he starts the game tonight.

Kevin Pietersen wants 'franchise competition for red-ball cricket' to raise England Test standards

Former England batter Kevin Pietersen believes that the ECB must create a first-class competition with a similar structure to the Hundred if the men’s Test team is to “return to its former glories”.Pietersen, an Ashes winner in 2005, 2009, 2010-11 and 2013, was part of Sky Sports’ commentary team for the inaugural edition of the Hundred this summer and suggested that players involved “will have improved markedly” due to the concentration of talent. In a column for Betway, Pietersen said that the standard of County Championship cricket had fallen markedly since his debut for Nottinghamshire in 2001 and described the competition as “not fit to serve the Test team”.Related

“The best players don’t want to play in it, so young English players aren’t learning from other greats like I did,” Pietersen wrote. “Batters are being dismissed by average bowlers on poor wickets and the whole thing is spiralling.”When I first started playing first-class cricket in England, the intensity of a County Championship match was like a Test match. It was as tough as anything. I learned my trade against some of the greatest players in the world every week.”The Leicestershire side we came up against in 2003 featured Virender Sehwag, Brad Hodge, Paul Nixon, Jeremy Snape, Phil DeFreitas and Charlie Dagnall [but] when I made 355* against Leicestershire in 2015, I would have made 250 without pads on. It was a moment when I realised just how far county cricket had fallen.”Pietersen suggested that the Championship could continue as a “feeder system… where players develop until they’re ready to step up” but said that English cricket needs an eight-team, round-robin competition in the heart of summer in order to better serve the interest of the Test side.”In the Hundred, the ECB have actually produced a competition with some sort of value,” he said. “They now need to introduce a similar franchise competition for red-ball cricket, whereby the best play against the best every single week.”They would make money available to attract some of the best overseas players in the world and the top English players would benefit from playing alongside them.”It would be a marketable, exciting competition, which would drive improvement in the standard and get people back through the gates for long-form cricket.”We need to produce lucrative, high-quality, interesting competitions that reward and improve the best players. This could be one. This Ashes defeat needn’t be a total failure if they [the ECB] can use it to implement proper change for the Test side.”The charge that the Championship is failing to produce Test-quality players has been levelled by several senior figures within the England set-up since their innings defeat in Melbourne saw Australia take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the Ashes, with Joe Root, James Anderson and Graham Thorpe among those to criticise the county game either implicitly or explicitly.Michael Atherton, the former England captain and broadcaster, proposed in his column that the Championship should move to three divisions of six, with each team playing 10 games between May and July, and encouraged more representative games. “North v South, Best v Rest, Lions games… should be used as a bridge between the county and Test game,” he wrote.Atherton also suggested Andrew Strauss and Ed Smith as candidates to replace Tom Harrison and Ashley Giles as the ECB’s chief executive and managing director of men’s cricket respectively; called for split-format coaches to replace the “out of his depth” Chris Silverwood; and said that it was “time for someone else” to take over from Joe Root as captain, proposing Ben Stokes as “a viable alternative”.

Michael Vaughan apologises to Azeem Rafiq for 'hurt' during racism controversy

Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, has told Azeem Rafiq that he is “sorry for the hurt he has gone through”, after speaking publicly for the first time since being implicated in the Yorkshire racism scandal.Vaughan has been stood down from BBC Test Match Special’s commentary team for the forthcoming Ashes, in the wake of Rafiq’s claim that he had once told a group of four Asian players at Yorkshire “there are too many of you lot, we need to do something about it”.However, speaking to BBC Breakfast’s Dan Walker, Vaughan insisted once again that he had no recollection of using such words, adding that he had been “proud as punch” to take the field at Trent Bridge in 2009 alongside the homegrown trio of Rafiq, Adil Rashid and Ajmal Shahzad, as well as Pakistan’s overseas player, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan.”I don’t [remember saying that],” Vaughan said. “My recollection from that day, as I’ve said, I was a Yorkshire player for 18 years, I was the first player to sign for that club that was not born in the county, so for 18 years we had gone from me being the first to sign for the club, Sachin Tendulkar being the first from overseas, to players being able to sign from other clubs.”It was my last few games and I remember it clearly that I was proud as punch that we had four Asian players representing Yorkshire Cricket Club.”Speaking at the DCMS hearings in Westminster last week, Rafiq had told the parliamentary select committee that it was “important not to make it all about Michael”, adding that he might not have remembered making derogatory comments “because it’s not important to him”.Vaughan admitted that that comment “hurts”, and reiterated his claim that he had never used racist language. However, he acknowledged that, in the course of his 18-year professional career, including ten with England, “I’d be lying if I would sit here now and say that I never heard words or conversations that I would certainly pick out now.”‘That [comment] hurts,” Vaughan added, “because I’ve always felt that every single team that I have been involved in, the biggest praise I ever got as England captain for six years was that I was the kind of person that really galvanized the group, got the team working together as one. I wanted everyone in the dressing room to feel included.”I’m sorry for the hurt that [Rafiq] has gone through,” Vaughan added. “Yorkshire Cricket Club, I believe, is me. It has been my life whether I have been a player or not, I believe that once you have played for Yorkshire you are always a Yorkshire player and I am sorry for all the hurt that he has gone through.”Time can never be a healer but hopefully time can be a way of Yorkshire Cricket Club never going through this situation again, and not putting themselves in a position of denial that they treated the players so badly.”In the course of the interview, Vaughan was read out a number of his tweets, including a complaint that ‘Not many English people live in London… I need to learn a new language’, and a reply to the actor and comedian, Adil Ray, suggesting that Moeen Ali should ask young Muslims if they are terrorists to help make society a safer place.”I look back at my 12 years in social media, I regret many tweets,” Vaughan said. “I apologise deeply to anyone I offended with those tweets.”We all make mistakes and, in my life, I’ve made quite a few mistakes on Twitter. I apologise for that, but I can’t suddenly get rid of it. That’s happened, but I think sometimes through social media, people can presume who you are and interpret who you are because of a tweet or two. I know who I am, and I hope the people around me, who were close to me, know exactly who I am.”Asked if he felt he could rehabilitate his career in light of the controversy, Vaughan conceded: “It’ll take time. I’ve no doubt about that. But I’m sure over time people will see that the true me.”I won’t be doing the Ashes,” he added, in the wake of the BBC’s decision to withdraw him for editorial reasons, although he is at this stage still expected to take part in the Australian host broadcast for Fox Cricket. “I understand the story is all about Azeem Rafiq and racism in cricket. I just hope in time I will have that chance to come back. The one thing I have loved more than anything since retiring is talking cricket, and I hope I can do that again.”

Barca want him: Liverpool must axe star who earns more than Gakpo & Diaz

Liverpool sit pretty at the top of the Premier League heading into another international break, after Arne Slot’s men got the better of Crystal Palace 1-0 away from home on Saturday.

It wasn’t the most convincing win in the end, with Diogo Jota’s early strike ending up being the difference maker between the two sides on the day, but the Reds won’t care one bit as they go about continuing their excellent start to the campaign under their new Dutch manager.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

Slot made some big calls in the build-up to this clash with the Eagles, as Luis Diaz dropped down to the bench amongst other notable switches, but Cody Gakpo’s inclusion from the get-go proved to be an inspired alteration by the ex-Feyenoord boss.

Gakpo and Diaz's importance to Liverpool

Gakpo stood out for the Reds in attack on their travels down to South London, with the exciting 25-year-old forward combining well with Jota for the only strike of the contest.

Amassing five key passes on the day as a livewire for Oliver Glasner’s men to keep tabs on, Gakpo also fired two efforts of his own towards the Palace net to try and make his table-topping side’s win more emphatic away from the solitary Jota goal.

That was the Liverpool number 18’s first start in the Premier League this campaign, and certainly won’t be his last based on the numbers he put in, with Slot rubbing his hands with delight at the amount of options he has at his disposal up top.

Diaz will hope he can break back into his manager’s XI regardless of Gakpo’s stellar showing, however, with the Colombian attacker boasting fine numbers himself this campaign, having bagged an impressive five goals from seven Premier League contests.

Luis Diaz celebrates

Whilst Diaz will be confident that he can re-enter the lineup soon, Darwin Nunez won’t feel so optimistic, with the Uruguayan left on the bench even during the latter stages of the win at Selhurst Park.

The latest on Darwin Nunez's future at Liverpool

It has also been reported that there are interested parties looking at the inconsistent striker, with GIVEMESPORT claiming that Barcelona could be preparing a bid for Nunez soon to give him a way out of Anfield this January.

Liverpool would look to recoup some of the whopping £85m they splashed out on Nunez if they were to offload him soon, with a sale also allowing the aspiring top-flight champions to free up some space on the wage bill, as the South American centre-forward is a high earner in the current Reds camp.

Despite only firing home one lacklustre strike so far this season, Nunez rakes in a high £140k-per-week salary, with 34 goals from 103 total games donning Liverpool red so far not exactly blowing away the Anfield masses either.

Both Gakpo and Diaz earn smaller pay packets despite both shining more for Slot’s men this season than Nunez has managed, with the Dutchman earning £120k-per-week and the 27-year-old winger earning £55k-per-week respectively.

Darwin Nunez for Liverpool

Whilst Diaz will be confident that he can force his way back into the main lineup soon, Nunez won’t be so sure, with only one start coming his way in the top-flight this season as Jota makes that spot up top his own.

The Portuguese forward will be even harder to shift after his winning strike against Palace, with his counterpart – who was labelled as “very wasteful” by ex-Reds great Robbie Fowler last campaign – very wary about his future in England and perhaps tempted by a switch to the Camp Nou subsequently.

Darwin Nunez for Liverpool

Of course, the season is still in its infancy, and as Gakpo proved last time out against the Eagles, opportunities are there for the taking when Slot does decide to freshen up his XI.

Bess Heath, Katie Levick to the fore as Northern Diamonds secure top-three finish

Knockout place secured after comfortable win against local rivals Thunder

Bess Heath made an unbeaten 78•Getty Images

Northern Diamonds booked a Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy knockout spot after hammering Thunder by 105 runs in their clash at Emirates Riverside. Diamonds put forward a brilliant effort with the bat as Bess Heath top scored with an unbeaten 78, but there were also half-centuries for Beth Langston and Sterre Kalis along with a score of 48 from Ami Campbell in their innings of 294 for 5.Although Georgie Boyce offered resistance with a knock of 67, the chase always appeared too much for the visitors amid miserly bowling from Hollie Armitage and company. Katie Levick claimed four wickets, while Armitage notched two herself to allow the hosts to ease over the line ahead of a crucial contest next week against table-topping Southern Vipers.Thunder won the toss and inserted the home side in cloudy conditions at Chester-le-Street. Armitage was unable to build on her impressive knock in Diamonds’ win over Western Storm on Friday, picking out Natalie Brown at point off the bowling of Alice Dyson for only 7. Kalis calmed proceedings alongside Rachel Hopkins, producing a stand worth 47 for the second wicket.Hopkins took her time to settle, and just when she appeared to be finding her rhythm Brown found her outside edge, allowing Eleanor Threlkeld to make a sharp grab. Kalis pressed forward in her innings and found the boundary with ease on her way to a fine half-century from 57 balls. The Netherlands international was dismissed a great catch by Sophia Turner at cover, but Campbell and Heath ensured the Diamonds maintained their momentum.Campbell took the attack to Alex Hartley dispatching two straight sixes over the head of the left-arm spinner. The left-hander tried to go for another maximum to reach her half-century, but was caught on the boundary by Laura Marshall. But Heath and Langston launched an assault on the Thunder bowlers late in the innings, putting on a stand of 91 for the seventh wicket. Heath provided the platform before Langston powered a quick-fire fifty from 28 balls to usher Diamonds to a strong total. The visitors made a measured start to their replay as Boyce found the boundary off the bowling of Ella Telford. Phoebe Graham entered the attack at the Finchale End to end the opening stand, removing Seren Smale for 12. Threlkeld and Daisy Mullan were unable to time the ball amid tight bowling from the hosts and paid the price with their wickets. Boyce held the key for the Thunder, and although she was dropped on 49 by Telford, she capitalised by reaching an 84-ball fifty. The chase was all but over for the Thunder when Armitage removed Boyce for a solid 67 as she attempted to find the boundary, before the Diamonds skipper ran out Brown at the non-striker’s end.Thunder’s required rate soared above 15 runs per over as the hosts continued their stranglehold of the contest, despite a stand worth 55 from Marshall and Laura Jackson. Levick notched late wickets to claim figures of 4 for 34 to ensure the hosts closed out a comfortable win and a place in the top three.

Alex Carey praised for his calmness but T20 captaincy remains up for grabs

Matthew Wade could stand in for the injured Aaron Finch during the series in Bangladesh

Andrew McGlashan28-Jul-2021Alex Carey’s calm leadership was lauded by Australia coach Justin Langer after the 2-1 ODI series win over West Indies but he appears unlikely to retain the captaincy for the T20I series against Bangladesh.Australia need to decide on a stand-in for the injured Aaron Finch who missed the ODIs in the Caribbean and was then ruled out of the Bangladesh leg due to a knee problem that is likely to require surgery.Carey is much less secure of his place in the T20I set-up – he made 22 runs in three innings against West Indies after being recalled to the middle order – and it could be that Matthew Wade takes the captaincy against Bangladesh having previously stepped in for Finch against India last year.Australia fly to Dhaka on a charter flight on Wednesday and a final decision will be taken over the next few days by Langer in consultation with selectors Trevor Hohns and George Bailey.Related

“We’ll work through that,” Langer said. “We want to be consistent with those decisions, hopefully we’ve shown over a period now that we’re very consistent with how we’re selecting teams and selecting leaders, and no doubt that, that’ll be shown again when we get to the T20s in Bangladesh.”However, Carey’s first stint in the role – having lost his position as shared vice-captaincy last year – will have done his credentials no harm when future captains are being assessed. Finch has previously said he would like to continue through to the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.”I thought Alex’s captaincy was outstanding,” Langer said. “He’s so calm and you can see it in his face when he bats. We’ve seen it through his career, but we saw it in that hundred he scored with Glenn Maxwell in England last year, to win when we were really under pressure, and even the way that he batted last night he just seemed so calm under pressure.”As we know he’s the ultimate professional, so therefore he’s easy to work with as a captain because you know that he will tick every box. He’ll make sure that all his due diligence is done on the opposition and he’ll know how our players are travelling. So he was great to work with, I loved his calmness, loved his composure, I love what he brings on and off the field so he did a really really good job. He’s very impressive in that role.”Alex Carey played key hands with the bat•AFP

Carey could get another chance in the T20I middle order against Bangladesh with Australia’s batting resources stretched due to Finch’s absence and doubts over Ben McDermott after he injured his ankle diving into a boundary board in the second ODI. Due to travel difficulties and biosecure arrangements, replacements can’t be called up.Moises Henriques had a tough time with the bat in the West Indies but there is limited room for manoeuvre given both the travelling replacements, the uncapped Nathan Ellis and Tanveer Sangha, only provide bowling cover. Dan Christian and Ashton Turner did not feature in the last T20I against West Indies and will come back into the frame. With five matches in the space of seven days it is likely the fast bowlers will be rotated.Australia will be looking to improve on their 4-1 loss against West Indies which included throwing away a winning position in the opening game and then they could not get on the board until the series was gone.Mitchell Marsh was the biggest success in that series with 219 runs and eight wickets to push himself firmly into contention for the T20 World Cup even when the absent players are available again.”Certainly Mitch Marsh has put his hand up. That No. 3 position is really interesting depending on how Steve Smith comes up with his elbow injury,” Langer said. “That adds real depth to our play. I also thought the way Ashton Agar batted yesterday, [he] is certainly up there as a spin bowler and he’s like a leopard in the field. I also liked the fact that he, Matthew Wade, and Alex Carey, the left handers in the middle…we thought moving into the World Cup we might be a bit short on left-hand batsman. But the way those guys have stood up is a huge bonus for us moving forward.”

Chelsea offer Barcelona £115k-per-week ace who Maresca says is "very good"

Chelsea have approached and sounded out Barcelona, alongside other elite European clubs, over signing a member of Enzo Maresca's squad before deadline day as they hunt for potential buyers.

Players most likely to leave Chelsea this summer

It's been another summer of lavish spending for Todd Boehly and BlueCo, most recently topped up with the signing of Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid in a deal which could be worth up to £46.3 million.

The Portugal international looks set to make a return to Stamford Bridge and is set to undergo a medical this week, where he will then put pen to paper on a six-year contract at Chelsea, and the move will allow Conor Gallagher to finally complete his transfer the other way after being in limbo for around a week.

Supporters may well be upset to lose Gallagher, who is a Cobham academy graduate and played a key role under Mauricio Pochettino last season. With the 24-year-old now finally set to wave his goodbyes to west London, he could be joined by a host of other players.

Napoli have lodged an official bid to sign Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea, following weeks of speculation regarding the Belgian and a potential reunion with Antonio Conte in Serie A.

He is apparently closer than ever to leaving the club, three years after they signed him from Inter Milan for a whopping £98 million. As well as Lukaku and Gallagher, the likes of Ben Chilwell, Raheem Sterling, Armando Broja, Noni Madueke, Cesare Casadei, Trevoh Chalobah and Kepa Arrizabalaga stand out as other high-profile Chelsea players who are up for sale this summer.

Chelsea approach Barcelona over selling Carney Chukwuemeka

Another player facing an uncertain future under Maresca is 20-year-old midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.

The Englishman started just two Premier League games last season, making the vast majority of his appearances off the bench, but he did manage a goal and an assist over his 224 total top-flight minutes.

Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.

According to The Sun, Chelsea have even sounded out Barcelona over potentially signing Chukwuemeka, offering them an opportunity to bring him in permanently, or even on loan.

They've approached other top European clubs too, as they seek a new home for the £115,000-per-week ace, and may accept a lower fee than his £40 million valuation.

However, as things stand, it is Crystal Palace in pole position. Maresca has publicly praised Chukwuemeka as a "very good" player, but admits that he cannot guarantee him game time.

“I think every case is different,” said Maresca on Chukwuemeka's future after their defeat to Man City.

“Carney, I think he is a very good player. The problem is, because of some injuries in the past, I think the best for him is to play 30 or 35 games in a row, to show himself that he is fit and how good he is because he is very good.

“With us, is he going to play 35 games? I’m not sure.”
