Wolves could sign "prolific" 22-goal star who’d be a dream next to Cunha

Wolverhampton Wanderers saw yet another Premier League game go by without securing all three points as they drew 2-2 with Nottingham Forest.

The only real positive for Gary O’Neil was the return to the starting XI of Matheus Cunha, who was making his first start since February 10th, grabbing two goals in the process.

This could give the Old Gold a boost heading into the final few games, while it looks like the manager is eyeing up a potential partner for the Brazilian next season…

Wolves transfer news

Last season, the Molineux side scored the fewest goals in the Premier League, registering just 31. Although they have improved massively this term, it is clear O’Neil is aiming to add some more attacking prowess to his squad during the summer transfer window.

According to GIVEMESPORT sources, Wolves are currently keeping an eye on striker Mohamed Amoura ahead of making a potential swoop when the season comes to an end.

Mohamed Amoura in action.

They face some competition from Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, however, and if Spurs qualify for the Champions League next season, they will likely be the frontrunners for his signature.

O’Neil may have to move a few players out of the club in the transfer window in order to make a deal happen, especially considering Amoura has a contract at his current side, Union Saint-Gilloise (USG) until 2027.

Adding someone with his talent to the manager's attacking lineup could certainly give the club a major boost, while also being a dream signing for Cunha in the process, who could link up well with the Algerian.

Why Mohamed Amoura would benefit Cunha

Cunha is currently the top scorer at the club this season, netting 13 goals across all competitions. The former Atlético Madrid forward has been deployed as a number ten throughout the campaign to devastating effect and this could see him work well with Amoura.

Not only does Cunha have three assists from this position, but he also created seven big chances, and averaged one key pass per game while succeeding with two dribbles per match, showcasing his selfless nature.

Amoura has been on fire for USG throughout 2023/24, scoring a total of 22 goals across 40 matches, while also showing his selfless side by chipping in with six assists.

It is no wonder that the Algeria international was hailed by talent scout Jacek Kulig for being “incredibly prolific” just before Christmas.

Among his teammates in the Belgian top flight, the 23-year-old currently ranks second for goals and assists (19), first for shots on target per game (1.4), second for big chances created (six) and fourth for successful dribbles per match (1.2), offering the same sort of qualities as Cunha.

This could allow O’Neil to form a deadly partnership which could help Wolves secure a top-half finish in the Premier League next season.

While a current price for the player is unknown, it looks as though the Old Gold will have to splash out a significant fee, but judging by his statistics this season, Amoura could be well worth it.

Ollie Pope leading the charge for England's young guns

It remains just about possible – if Jofra Archer makes a late bid for selection on Wednesday – that England could go into the third Test in Port Elizabeth with six players under the age of 25. They have only done that once before*.It is a statistic that underlines the period of transition in which this England side find itself. Whether by design or not – in a perfect world, the side might well contain James Anderson, Rory Burns and Moeen Ali or Jack Leach – England are in a rebuilding phase. An investment has been made into young players. They are likely to be given time to develop. At the heart of this young side is Ollie Pope. While some of the other young players – Zak Crawley and Dom Bess, for example – are taking advantage of the misfortunate of first-choice players, Pope is a first-choice pick. In the eyes of most of the England management, he is the most promising specialist batsman to come into the Test team since Joe Root in 2012. There are whispered hopes he will develop into a 100-Test player.ALSO READ: Botham, Flintoff, Stokes – who is England’s greatest?</aSuch was Pope’s promise that he was first selected for the Test side when just 20. By then he had played 15 first-class games and scored four first-class centuries. That is, in context, only two fewer than Jos Buttler in his 104 match first-class career. But England, bursting with men who could bat in the middle-order, asked Pope to fulfil a role that was unfamiliar to him. Despite batting at No. 6 for Surrey, despite never having come in before the 20th over of a first-class innings, he was required to bat at No. 4 on Test debut. In his first three innings he came into bat in the ninth, 13th and 12th overs. Unsurprisingly, he struggled. Perhaps more surprisingly in these days of continuity of selection, he was dropped after those three innings despite the fact one of his dismissals was down the leg side. But if the use of Pope was wrong, the identification of his talent was surely correct. He has, at the time of writing, an average of 71.31 in first-class cricket for Surrey and 58.06 in all first-class cricket. After 30 games, he had a higher first-class average than any English player in history. But for a dislocated shoulder, sustained while fielding for Surrey last April, his recall would have come earlier than November. But as it is, he has been assured of a run at No. 6 – the position Root started out in Test cricket – and, over his last few innings, started to provide returns on that investment. Two of his three most recent innings have been half-centuries, with the first, in Hamilton, showcasing an improved tightness in his game and the second, in Cape Town, providing something of a masterclass in batting with the tail. He scored 29 of the 35 posted for England’s tenth-wicket and later took the catch that sealed the win. After the Cape Town victory, a small group of the younger players – Pope, Bess, Dom Sibley and Matt Parkinson – hired an apartment in Camps Bay and enjoyed a few days’ beach holiday. But now, back in training with the rest of the squad, it is clear Pope is relishing being part of a young team who are enjoying the new experiences and each other’s successes.”Winning this series would be an amazing achievement for us, especially where we’re at as a side at the moment,” Pope said. “We’re quite young side with a lot of players just coming through.”The Cape Town result says a lot about what we have within the camp, but we also realise that it’s not something that happens overnight. Putting this side together will take time, but if we can win this series will be a great achievement.”The first time I was picked I felt like it was almost a bit of a lottery. I was thinking ‘hopefully I’ll get a score but if I miss out then so be it.'”At the moment I feel like I’m in a good place with my game. I know I’ve got the technique and mindset to do it. To have those scores under my belt is a real positive for me.”Perhaps it says something for Pope’s ambitions that he was inspired by Steven Smith and Virat Kohli when batting with the tail in Cape Town.”The way I went about my innings was just remembering how some of the best players in the world have done it,” he said. “I remember watching Smith and Kohli from when they played against England and how, even when they were nine down, they were trying to face almost every ball. It was pretty new for me.”The way Stokesy did it at Headingley was slightly different because he can just whack every ball out of the park and clear the men on the rope. Us smaller lads have to go about it in a bit more of a smart way and try and find a way of facing as many balls as you can. If you get a boundary option, then great, if not then try and face five balls and get a quick single at the end and get a boundary next over.”If you ask any young batsman coming into the game, Smith, Kohli and Joe Root are the guys you want to be like. They have been the main run-scorers in international cricket over the last however many years and hopefully I’ve got a game where I can follow in their footsteps.”I wouldn’t say I tried to copy their techniques, but the one thing they have in common is having solid foundations. They can build their game around that and that’s what I’m trying to do.”Ollie Pope looks on•Getty Images

While Pope acknowledged the comparisons with Ian Bell – it was Andrew Strauss who first mentioned it to him – he insisted they are accidental. But since his first spell in the side, when his expansive off-side play could leave him looking loose at times, he looks even more like Bell now: more compact; more disciplined outside off stump; more prepared to be patient and make the bowlers come to him. In short, a player who has learned to harness his talent.”I think Bell is an amazing player and I used to love watching him bat but it’s not been anything that I’ve tried to emulate,” Pope said. “But it’s a big compliment because he is a pretty class player to watch. I’ve seen that a lot on social media. He was an amazing player and I loved watching him play.”His favourite players were, instead, keeper-batsmen such as MS Dhoni and Adam Gilchrist and he has not given up hopes of fulfilling a role as keeper in the years ahead.”I still want to keep that going in my game,” he said. “I definitely will be practising my keeping. I’m still the second keeper at Surrey. It’s only going to be a positive if I can keep nailing that side of my game, but I’m also more than happy playing as a batter as well.”With a youthful look to the side, it is probably even more important that the more experienced players provide leadership. And Pope said Ben Stokes had taken him under his wing and demonstrated the fitness levels required to excel at this level.”In New Zealand I realised what was needed,” he said. “I’d go under Stokes’ wing a little bit and, after the warm-up games, we’d run back to the hotel and do a running session the day before the games.”If you can get into those good habits, if you control everything in your power to make sure you are as fit as you can be and you’re training as well as you can, then hopefully good things will happen. It’s good to see the way these guys go about it. Hopefully I can learn from that and keep following in their footsteps.”England’s players were given a day off on Tuesday. While some, including Pope, went on safari, others played golf. Only Root, accompanied by batting coach Graham Thorpe, took to the nets where he had a long session.

Farke must finally unleash "fantastic" Leeds star ahead of Piroe

Leeds United are back in action again this evening as they turn their attention back to FA Cup action with a trip to face Plymouth Argyle in their fourth round replay.

The Whites were held to a 1-1 draw at Elland Road in the first clash between the two sides last month and they will now battle it out again to progress through to the fifth round.

Daniel Farke's side are currently third in the Championship table and one point adrift of the play-off places, having played a game more than Southampton in second, and the bulk of their focus may be on their efforts to secure promotion to the Premier League.

Daniel Farke.

This cup clash should, however, be viewed as a welcome distraction for Leeds as it provides them with a chance to give minutes to players who have not been regulars for the German head coach in the league, which could then mean that they are sharp and ready to be called upon if needed over the next few months.

With this in mind, one player who should finally be unleashed from the start for this match is 20-year-old centre-forward Mateo Joseph.

The young whiz should come in to provide Patrick Bamford, who started against Bristol City last time out, with a rest and be selected ahead of Joel Piroe up front.

Patrick Bamford's recent resurgence

Leeds' attack has been bolstered by the former England international's return to form at the top end of the pitch with a string of impressive performances.

Bamford started the season with zero goals, zero assists, and one missed penalty in 16 Championship appearances for the club, albeit they all came as a substitute.

That came after the experienced striker managed four goals from an xG of 8.61 across 28 outings in the Premier League last season as the Whites were relegated back down to the second tier.

Leeds forward Patrick Bamford.

The English attacker had gone through a rough 18 months in Yorkshire and that has made his recent resurgence all the more pleasing to see.

Bamford is currently on a run of four goals and two assists in his last seven appearances for the club in all competitions, with three goals in his last five league matches.

He is starting to establish himself as the go-to option in the number nine position for Leeds as his consistent goal contributions have made it hard for Farke to leave him out of the side, with his most recent one being an assist for Wilfried Gnonto's winner against Bristol City.

However, this cup replay against Plymouth this evening does provide one of the manager's other options with an opportunity to get minutes under their belt, whilst Bamford can rest ahead of a possible start against Rotherham at Elland Road at the weekend.

Piroe could be the obvious player to come in for him, having started the 1-1 draw last month, but he should be left out in order for Joseph to come in.

Joel Piroe's recent struggles

The Dutch forward, signed from Championship rivals Swansea last summer, has not enjoyed a particularly impressive run of form in recent months.

He has produced one open play goal and two strikes from the penalty spot, along with zero assists, in his last 13 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Farke handed him a start as the main centre-forward against Plymouth at Elland Road in January and it was a huge opportunity to show what he could do as the number nine in the German's system.

As you can see in the table above, it was an opportunity that passed him by, much like the game did, as Piroe failed to make an impact on or off the ball with his lack of quality in the final third and lack of strength out of possession.

The 24-year-old whiz has produced ten goals in 29 Championship matches for Leeds since his move from the Swans but his recent form has left a lot to be desired.

His performance against Plymouth in the first match does not suggest that he is deserving of another chance to impress, particularly when there is a young talent in Joseph who is yet to have an opportunity.

Mateo Joseph's big chance

The 20-year-old whiz is yet to start a competitive game for the first-team this season, with nine substitute appearances in the Championship and FA Cup combined.

Joseph has not had a chance to prove his worth from the start and this cup replay is the perfect excuse for Farke to bring him in to rest Bamford, as Piroe's underperformance has been concerning.

The Dutch striker has not done enough to guarantee his spot as the second-choice number nine and a strong performance from the England youth international could add more competition for places within the squad ahead of the run-in towards the end of the season.

Joseph, who was once hailed as "fantastic" by ex-U21s boss Michael Skubala, has an exceptional record for the club's youth teams that suggests he has the potential to develop into an excellent option for Farke in the final third.

As you can see in the table above, the England U20 marksman has caught the eye at youth level with his terrific goalscoring form, with 20 goals and four assists in 37 outings.

Last season, the 5 foot 11 dynamo plundered 16 goals and two assists in 21 Premier League 2 regular season and play-off matches combined in what was a prolific campaign for the Spanish-born talent.

These statistics suggest that the young gem is capable of finding the back of the net on a regular basis for the club but he is yet to show that at senior level.

A first-team start, for the first time this season, tonight could be the first step on the road to proving himself in Farke's team, which is why the German head coach should finally unleash him ahead of the struggling Piroe against Plymouth in the FA Cup.

Man Utd could finally replace Antony with “unreal talent” who’s a "diamond”

Manchester United have faced plenty of difficulties this season.

This is highlighted by their eighth position in the Premier League and the fact that they’re already nine points off fourth.

With that in mind, Erik ten Hag will look to sign a new forward this month to help fix their attacking woes.

Man Utd transfers latest – Roony Bardghji

As per Football Insider, Man United’s scouting department have been monitoring Roony Bardghji this campaign.

The winger's contract expires in December 2025, but the Red Devils are reportedly huge admirers of him.

However, a move this winter is unlikely unless outgoings occur at Old Trafford due to financial fair play guidelines.

Roony Bardghji’s style of play

Since moving to Manchester for a whopping £86m, Antony has failed to impress. The former Ajax star has been unable to settle at his new club, with his performances unconvincing and underwhelming. Last season, the Brazilian scored eight goals and registered three assists across all competitions, but this term, he has failed to register a single contribution in 21 matches.

Antony

On the other hand, Bardghji has experienced his main breakthrough season since the summer, and the Red Devils have first-hand experience of the quality he possesses, as he scored the winning goal in Kobenhavn’s 4-3 win over United in the Champions League. The 18-year-old is an “unreal talent,” according to Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, as underlined by his 11 goals in 30 appearances this season.

Therefore, based on performances this term, it is reasonable to presume that the Swedish star would push Antony further down the pecking order, potentially making him the fourth-choice right winger behind Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho.

Nonetheless, Bardghji’s performance against United gave a glimpse of his quality, and the table below shows a handful of his statistics from that game.

Despite only playing 27 minutes, the Swedish prospect showed the maturity and bravery of a seasoned professional. The occasion didn’t overwhelm the youngster, and his two shots, including the winner, displayed his goal-scoring instincts, which Antony clearly lacks.

The fact that he completed 100% of his dribbles also highlights his immense technical ability and agility. His small frame and 5 foot 8 height allows him to wriggle past opponents', and when that is combined with his direct approach, he can be unstoppable. However, he is also intelligent and knows when to retain possession, as shown by his 89% pass accuracy.

Kobenhavn forward Roony Bardghji.

Furthermore, the left-footed whizz is a “pure diamond,” as per Kulig, as his technique is also backed by his strength and the ability to bounce off opponents. This is highlighted by his 3/3 ground duels won, which makes him almost similar to Bukayo Saka regarding his inevitability of keeping the ball even when he arguably shouldn’t.

Overall, Bardghji has all the attributes to become an elite winger, and Ten Hag must look to bring another Roony back to Old Trafford.

Leeds make move to sign full-back as 49ers ready late-window transfer blitz

Leeds United are yet to welcome their first reinforcement in the January transfer window, but reports suggest that the 49ers could now finally make their winter move to land a Premier League edition. With Daniel Farke's side fighting for Championship promotion, this could quickly prove to make all the difference.

Leeds United transfer news

The transfer rumours have arrived even in the face of a quiet January window at Elland Road. The Whites have been linked with moves for the likes of Liverpool's young right-back Calvin Ramsay after his earlier loan spell at Preston North End came to an end, as well as Tottenham Hotspur's Ben Davies in what would be an impressive move given his experience at the top level.

The Yorkshire club's quiet window so far will be no shock to Farke, who admitted at the start of the month: "I expect a much more quiet and calm January to the last transfer period for example. We wish for a quiet January, but won’t fall asleep and when there are decisions to make, we will also make decisions and you never know what happens."

Leeds could land dream James partner in £50k-p/w Premier League "wizard"

The Elland Road outfit are seemingly seeking to bolster their ranks with a new attacking addition this month.

ByRobbie Walls Jan 19, 2024

As the window approaches the latter stages, however, it looks as though the 49ers could finally spring into action. According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Leeds have made their first move for Ryan Giles, enquiring to Luton Town over a potential deal to sign the left-back as part of a 'late-transfer blitz' at Elland Road. The rumours have seemingly developed from initial interest to Leeds now making a first move for the defender.

Giles has struggled for minutes at Luton this season and could now be allowed to complete a loan move for the sake of earning more game-time. Meanwhile, Leeds could prioritise a left-back and a right-back this month following the termination of Djed Spence's loan deal and Luke Ayling leaving for Middlesbrough.

"Fantastic" Giles could play a part in Leeds' promotion push

Currently as many as seven points adrift of the second automatic promotion spot currently occupied by Ipswich Town and sitting fourth, Leeds are in need of a January boost in the form of reinforcements, and Giles could be among those to arrive. The left-back has enjoyed previous stints in the Championship at Middlesborough, Cardiff City and Blackburn Rovers, meaning that he could be more than capable of stepping into the level at Elland Road.

It was at Cardiff that Giles left many impressed, including former teammate Marlon Pack, who praised his debut performance, saying via Wales Online:

"He has got a fantastic delivery. He is someone who offers something that little bit different in the team that we were maybe lacking before. I think we will complement him, too. The way he gets the ball out of his feet and puts it in [the box] with so much venom and pace.

"In fairness, he was lucky today to get only the one assist, because he has put in some great balls and we were unlucky not to score a few more from his deliveries. He will be a fantastic asset to us. He's a young lad who's learning but he's got undoubted ability and it's down to us, our senior players, to make sure he delivers and to back him up during the games."
