Arsenal gem can cause "problems" for Fulham yet again, alongside Havertz

While still firmly in the mix near the top of the Premier League table, Arsenal's title hopes have taken a real hit over the last week or so, having dropped points in each of their last two top-flight outings.

Although a 1-1 draw away to title rivals Liverpool is no disgrace, the subsequent loss at home to West Ham United will have come as a real setback for manager Mikel Arteta, with a response needed against Fulham this afternoon.

Arteta must drop Martinelli & unleash Arsenal's £100k-p/w “game changer”

After Arsenal’s defeat to West Ham, Arteta could look to rotate his squad.

ByTom Lever Dec 29, 2023

That clash with the Cottagers will likely see Kai Havertz return to the fold following his absence due to suspension last time out, the £65m summer signing growing into a key figure for his new side after scoring three goals across his last six league outings.

Having drawn a blank on Thursday night, the Emirates outfit will be hoping that the German playmaker can continue his recent scoring spree against Marco Silva's men, with it also a chance for Eddie Nketiah to come into the fray to once again wreak havoc on today's opponents.

Eddie Nketiah's record vs Fulham

On the face of it, the Englishman's goal return against Fulham is not wholly eye-catching, having scored twice in only five career meetings with the west Londoners.

That being said, the Gunners academy graduate has regularly been a thorn in the side of the Craven Cottage outfit, only recently scoring in the 2-2 draw at the Emirates earlier in the campaign, giving the hosts the lead only to see his effort cancelled out late on by Joao Palhinha.

The 24-year-old marksman had dazzled after coming off the bench in that entertaining encounter having made a 'superb impact' in the words of football.london's Kaya Kaynak, while even being handed the captain's armband late on.

A year earlier, the one-time Leeds United loanee was also impressive during his cameo off the bench in the 2-1 win on home soil, with journalist Charles Watts stating that he "caused Fulham so many problems" on the day.

That was a sentiment echoed by Kaynak in his player ratings pieces at the time, awarding the striker a 7/10 match rating while writing that he 'caused problems for the Fulham backline with his energy and intensity' – something he may look to replicate this afternoon.

Prior to that, the one-cap international memorably scored a dramatic, stoppage-time winner against the Cottagers back in April 2021 to nudge the visitors ever closer toward relegation, showcasing his predatory finishing instincts to prod home at the back post.

Eddie Nketiah's season by numbers

The Gunners could well be in need of that clinical presence on the evidence of the midweek defeat to the Hammers, with Gabriel Jesus having been particularly 'wasteful' – as per The Standard's Simon Collings – after missing two gilt-edged chances in the contest.

That outing has only enhanced the calls for a new centre-forward to be brought in during the January transfer window, yet in the short-term, Nketiah – who has himself been linked with an exit – needs to be trusted with the chance to show what he can do from the start.

gabriel-jesus-arsenal-transfer-arteta-edu-monaco-folarin-balogun

While the £100k-per-week asset has been far from prolific this season, he does still boast a respectable haul of five goals and three assists from 18 league appearances – with only half of those outings coming from the start.

By contrast, that man Jesus has netted just three goals and provided only one assist in 14 top-flight games, begging the question as to why Arteta continues to persist with the Brazilian as his go-to number nine.

If Nketiah does feature from the start this afternoon, it would represent an opportunity to showcase that he can have a long-term future in north London, even if a new striker is signed next month.

Liverpool player ratings vs Everton: All over for Jurgen Klopp! Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah awful again as rattled Reds suffer disastrous derby defeat to leave title dreams in ruins

The Reds were once again guilty of shocking wastefulness and dire defending as the slumped to a dismal loss at Goodison Park

Liverpool's Premier League title hopes have been left in tatters after an embarrassing 2-0 loss at Everton on Wednesday, with the Reds once again paying a heavy price for horrific finishing and even worse defending.

Jurgen Klopp's side could have drawn level with Arsenal at the top of the table with a win, but they fell behind in farcical circumstances in the first half, with players taking it into turns to fail to clear the ball before Jarrad Branthwaite managed to sneak a shot under Alisson's body.

Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz then wasted one great chance after another to level the game before Dominic Calvert-Lewin rose unmarked at the back post in the 58th minute to head home a Dwight McNeil corner and seal a first win for Everton over their city rivals at Goodison Park since 2010.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Alisson (5/10):

Obviously let down by his defenders on both goals but was lucky to avoid giving away a penalty for taking out an offside Calvert-Lewin.

    Trent Alexander-Arnold (4/10):

Created several great chances with his frankly outrageous passing but was one of those who failed to clear the ball in the build-up to Everton's first goal and was then guilty of a pathetic attempt to stop Calvert-Lewin on the second.

    Ibrahima Konate (3/10):

Once again, an accident waiting to happen. His miscued clearance gifted Godfrey a goal and he repeatedly looked ropey in possession. Lucky to make it to the hour mark.

    Virgil van Dijk (5/10):

May have been let down by those around him – again – but, as captain, has to take responsibility for Liverpool's total inability to keep clean sheets. His frustration manifested itself in a booking for dissent.

    Andy Robertson (5/10):

A good outlet down the left flank but probably should have fired across the box rather than shooting from an acute angle when put in on goal.

    Midfield

    Dominik Szoboszlai (3/10):

A cheap imitation of the player who had such an excellent first half of the season. Indecisive and ineffective.

    Alexis Mac Allister (5/10):

The reason why Liverpool took control of the game towards the interval but fatigue has been a major problem for the overworked Argentine in recent weeks.

    Curtis Jones (3/10):

Unsurprisingly played with plenty of passion, but unable to make any meaningful impact on the game before being rightly withdrawn after an hour.

    Attack

    Mohamed Salah (4/10):

Created two chances with clever lay-offs that really should have been put away, but his finishing was horribly wasteful. Just not looked anything like the same player since returning from injury.

    Darwin Nunez (3/10):

An absolutely atrocious showing from the Uruguayan, who struggled to control the ball all evening and missed a glorious chance to level the game. Hard now to see how Liverpool can ever rely on him to score goals.

    Luis Diaz (6/10):

Kept carrying the fight to Everton with his pace and quick feet but missed one good chance in the first half before striking the woodwork with a sublime effort after the restart.

    Subs & Manager

    Harvey Elliott (5/10):

Came on midway through the second half but unable to turn the game around.

    Jarell Quansah (5/10):

Much better than the man he replaced, Konate – but that's not saying much.

    Wataru Endo (5/10):

Brought on for Szoboszlai but didn't impress.

    Kostas Tsimikas (N/A):

Not on long enough to warrant a score.

    Joe Gomez (N/A):

Only came on for the last 10 minutes.

    Jurgen Klopp (4/10):

Injuries up front obviously forced him to start Nunez, but the German erred badly by persisting with Konate and Szoboszlai and now his dream of a fairy-tale farewell has been dashed.

Virat Kohli, Tim Paine collide, exchange words before umpire interrupts

The fourth day witnessed heated conversations between the two captains, Tim Paine and Virat Kohli, in Perth as Australia were strengthening their grip on the match. During the wicketless first session, the captains even came into physical contact when Paine ran down the pitch for a single in the 71st over of the innings. As Paine nudged the first ball of the over towards midwicket for a run, Kohli ran towards the pitch in anticipation of collecting the ball and collided with Paine before the batsman could reach the non-striker’s end. Even as Kohli collected the ball and made his way towards mid-on for the next delivery, Paine followed him for a couple of steps for a few words before umpire Chris Gaffaney interrupted to remind them they were the captains.Kohli to Paine: “I’m not saying a word to you, why are you getting riled up?”
Paine to Kohli: “I’m fine. You’re the one that lost it yesterday, why are you trying to be cool today?”
Chris Gaffaney: “Oi, that’s enough, that’s enough.”
Paine: “We’re allowed to talk.”
Gaffaney: “Nah, nah, come on, play the game. You guys are the captains.”
Paine: “We can have a conversation… there’s no swearing, no…”
Gaffaney: “Tim you’re the captain.”
Paine: “Keep your cool, Virat!”Things heated up between Virat Kohli and Tim Paine in the first session•Getty Images

When Paine was walking off after being dismissed for 37 eight overs later, Kohli said a few more words that made the Australia captain turn around for a reply.Kohli and Paine had earlier been recorded exchanging words after a caught-behind appeal against Australia’s captain was turned down on the third evening. Walking past Paine, Kohli had remarked to his team-mates “If he messes it up, it’s 2-0”, moving Paine to retort “You’ve got to bat first, big head”.

"Very quick" West Brom player who Carlos Corberan likes could now leave

A "very quick" West Brom gem has been linked with a move away from the club recently, and now another big update has emerged regarding his future.

West Brom transfer news

The January transfer window is gradually approaching, at which point the Baggies could decide to add to their squad, giving Carlos Corberan the best possible chance to take his team from the Championship to the Premier League this season.

It remains to be seen how much money will be available to spend, however, with much possibly depending on whether the takeover of the club has gone through by that point. On the plus side, recent reports claim that progress is being made over new West Brom owners coming in, which acts as a real boost to anyone associated with the Championship side.

In terms of possible transfer targets, the Baggies have been linked with a move for Barnsley midfielder Callum Styles, as have a host of clubs, and a loan move for Villarreal attacker Ben Brereton Diaz has also been mooted. On the flip side, there is always the risk that certain players could leave West Brom midway through the season, and a fresh report suggests that that is the case.

Tom Fellows could leave West Brom

According to an update from Football Insider, West Brom youngster Tom Fellows is wanted by two Bundesliga clubs in January, ahead of a potential move away from The Hawthorns.

"West Brom youngster Tom Fellows is a target for Bundesliga duo Werder Bremen and Augsburg, sources have told Football Insider.

"The 20-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and foreign clubs such as Werder Bremen and Augsburg are weighing up moves for the midfielder – who could sign a pre-contract deal in January. Several English clubs are also interested in Fellows as they look to lure the talented attacker away from West Brom."

Fellows may only have been a bit-part player for West Brom so far this season, but the 20-year-old appears to be a long-term prospect, so selling him is something that needs to be avoided.

He has made his way through the youth setup and into Corberan's first team, with Fellows' stats still showing that he has made six appearances in the Championship this season, all of which have come from the substitutes' bench. A loan move somewhere else in January could make some sense, allowing him to enjoy more regular playing time, but selling him at this point in his career could feel like a risk.

Granted, Fellows is out of contract at West Brom next summer, so a big decision needs to be made by the club, but handing him an extension arguably makes the most sense, allowing him to grow as a player and for the Baggies to get the best of him in the coming years.

Corberan himself has spoken of his admiration for Fellows in the past, describing him as a "very quick" player, and it would be a shame to see him disposed of so early in his Hawthorns career.

BCCI shifts Australia A's four-dayers from Vizag to Bengaluru

The first four-day fixture (September 2-5) will be held at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, while the second (September 8-11) will be played in Alur

Australia A’s two-week stay in Bengaluru – originally scheduled for the 50-over Quadrangular series – is set to be extended. The BCCI is contemplating moving the two four-day games against India A out of Visakhapatnam. The 50-overs leg of their tour, originally slated to be held in Vijayawada, was also moved to Bengaluru because of heavy rain and unfit ground conditions. In Vijayawada, the Australian players were forced to spend a majority of their week-long stay indoors or in training at a private gym facility. While there has been no official announcement yet, ESPNcricinfo understands that the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has accepted BCCI’s request, and has facilitated all logistical arrangements. The first four-day fixture (September 2-5) is likely to be held at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, while the second (September 8-11) will be played in Alur, in the outskirts of the city.Until November 2017, Alur hosted only one-day fixtures. However, the recent construction of a clubhouse and dressing rooms that conform to BCCI’s set standards have made it a first-class venue. It hosted the second four-day fixture against South Africa A last month and has hosted matches in the ongoing Quadrangular series.

Ben Stokes acted in "spiteful" and "angry" tone, court told

Ben Stokes has been described as “mocking” a gay couple and speaking with “a spiteful” and “angry tone” by a witness in his trial in Bristol.Andrew Cunningham, a 37-year-old door supervisor at the Mbargo nightclub in the city, alleged that Stokes abused him and a gay couple having been refused entry to the club in the early hours of the morning on September 25 on the second day of Stokes’ trial for affray. Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale are facing the same charges. The jury was also shown CCTV footage that both Cunningham, the head doorman at the club, and PC Daniel Adams, the officer in the case, suggest shows Stokes flicking a cigarette butt at the head of one the gay men, William O’Connor.”He got a bit verbally abusive to myself,” Cunningham said. “First he mentioned my teeth. I have four front gold teeth. He told me I looked like a c***. I replied ‘thanks very much.'”Then he mentioned my tattoos and how shit they all are. He just looked at me and said my tattoos were shit and to look at my job. [He had] Quite a spiteful tone; quite an angry tone.”Cunningham then went on to describe how “the ginger guy… started to take the mick out of the gay couple.””They’re quite extravagant people,” Cunningham said of O’Connor and his friend Kai Barry. “Their mannerisms are not like everybody else’s.”The ginger guy picked up on this and started to take the mick. He changed his voice to talk like them. He started to mimic their actions. He just made noises to sound like them. He made hand gestures. If you hear them speak, they’re quite high-pitched guys. Quite effeminate guys. He made noises to try and copy them. Just making stupid sounds.”They just stood to the side. I don’t think they were impressed but they didn’t say anything.”When he flicked the cigarette I intervened. It didn’t hit anyone. But it was aimed in their direction. That’s when I stepped in, cos they hadn’t done anything wrong. They’re only little guys. I said ‘If you want to start on someone, start on me.'”He wouldn’t look at me or acknowledge I was there then.”Under cross-examination, Gordon Cole QC, representing Stokes, pointed out what he suggested were various inconsistencies with Cunningham’s evidence. It appears Cunningham or his colleagues did let in other visitors to the nightclub after 2am (CCTV footage shows O’Connor entering the club at 2.07am) while his claim that he had never seen the footage before conflicted with a statement given to the police on November 23 in which he said he had been shown it.PC Adams, the officer in the case, also admitted, under cross-examination, that “there may be another explanation” for the purported v-sign allegedly directed at the doormen and accepted that, “on the whole” Stokes’ interaction with the gay couple “seems light-hearted” and that “there is laughter” in the six or so minutes they are shown interacting with Stokes outside the club. The case continues.

Leicester facing points deduction for next season as Foxes become latest club plunged into financial crisis

Leicester City reportedly face the looming threat of breaching financial regulations and risk a potential points deduction next season.

  • Likely to breach the PSR loss limits
  • Need to sell players to raise money and avoid punishment

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Despite leading the Sky Bet Championship, a series of financial losses have placed the club in jeopardy, even if they secure promotion back to the Premier League this season. According to regulations, Leicester can incur losses of up to £83 million over a three-year period, with £70 million allowed for two years in the Premier League and £13 million permitted for a year in the EFL. However, the club's 2021-22 accounts revealed a staggering loss of £92.5 million, with another significant deficit expected for the 2022-23 accounts, set to be disclosed imminently. Notably, expenditures on academies, women's football, and facilities are exempt from the Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) calculations.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Leicester also faced allegations of breaching the Premier League's £105 million limit for their most recent three-year period in the top flight. However, due to relegation, they seemingly avoided sanctions similar to those imposed on Everton and Nottingham Forest.

According to the Football League made an unsuccessful attempt to impose a business plan on the club following serious concerns raised by financial information submitted in November. Leicester successfully contested the applicability of the rule, asserting their status as a Premier League club last season with leading sports lawyer Nick De Marco KC believed to have spearheaded the club's defence.

    WHAT DID LEICESTER SAY

Leicester remain defiant that the EFL has acted beyond its realm of powers after the Club Financial Reporting Panel (CFRP) ruled in their favour.

The Foxes put out a statement that read: "Although the Club is pleased that the CFRP’s decision found in its favour, it is concerned that it was necessary for the CFRP to intervene in this way to prevent the CFRU from acting outside of established EFL rules.

“Leicester City confirms it is in discussions with the football authorities regarding its profitability and sustainability calculations. Notwithstanding the CFRP’s decision, the Club remains committed to seeking an appropriate overall outcome in this matter.”

  • EFL TIGHTENING THE NOOSE

The EFL intends to address regulatory loopholes in response to Leicester's case, aiming to ensure that clubs provide a clear plan to manage expected breaches of spending rules. It confirmed that the independent club financial reporting unit (CFRU) believes the club has breached the regulations for the three years ending with the financial year 2023-24.

An EFL statement said: “Earlier this season, based on financial information submitted by the club, the CFRU concluded that the club was forecasting to breach the profitability and sustainability loss limits for the three-year period ending with the financial year 2023-24.

“The club argued that . . the CFRU had no right to require a business plan in respect of season 2023-24. The independent club financial reporting panel concluded that under the rules as currently written, the club was under no obligation to submit and agree to a business plan.”
