O Campeonato Carioca é o primeiro desafio.

The 10 highest-rated players on EA FC 25

It’s that time of year again: EA Sports has created the latest instalment of its EA FC videogame series (we’re still calling it FIFA), with FC 25 set to hit the shelves this week.

The player ratings are a source of anticipation each year, and this one is no different – with EA’s boffins determining which players are armed with the best skills on the game.

Below is how this year’s ratings lists across the men’s and women’s games look, as we go into the top 11 players in a bit more detail.

The 15 best songs to feature on the FIFA series

Two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas has suffered a slight downgrade this year, with her overall rating going down by 1. Putellas’ rating has been in the 90s ever since the year of her first crowning as women’s football’s best player, with the second coming despite an ACL injury.

Having made her comeback since and added the World Cup, Nations League and two Champions Leagues for Barcelona to her abundance of trophies, Putellas’ standing in world football is reflected with her latest EA FC rating, along with a First Touch Playstyle+.

Fresh from scoring four in the Champions League as we near the game’s release, anyone who doubted the ex-Spurs man’s talents following a relatively underwhelming Euros campaign may think again when it comes to squad building online.

But should he fall short of that particular individual award, he can take solace from an impressive 90-rated card on EA FC. We can expect Vini to terrorise plenty of defences online over the coming months.

'Never really enjoyed it!' – Match of the Day host Gary Lineker aims parting shot at Sports Personality of the Year as he clarifies exit decision

Gary Lineker has opened up on his exit from BBC's Sports Personality of the Year ceremony, insisting he "never really enjoyed" presenting the show.

Lineker was the host of the SPOTY ceremony for 23 years until his final appearance last year. The departing Match of the Day presenter didn't even watch this week's ceremony, in which England star Jude Bellingham missed out on the main prize, and admitted it's the TV role that he "never really enjoyed".

During a live show of The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker expressed his disillusionment with the ceremony, citing recent changes such as a new production company and the restriction against going off script during interviews.

WHAT LINEKER SAID

“People are starting to assume that it was part of my kind of termination or forthcoming termination with the BBC,” Lineker said. “But, just to make it clear, what happened with Sports Personality of the Year is that it went to an independent production company and it was granted at the start of the year. Now, I saw that as an opportunity to get out of presenting Sports Personality. It’s a great show, but it’s the one TV gig that I never really enjoyed.

“I think I share that with Des Lynam, who did it for many years as well. It’s a very strange show to do. Also, it’s the one thing where every single word that you say on it has to be agreed by all parties at the BBC. Every single interview you do, you have to say what questions you’re going to ask. I mean, I like to ad lib, I like to go off piste. You can’t do it [on] Sports Personality, not in recent times. Every nominee had to have exactly the same time of interviewing, so as to be impartial and fair.

“It was purely that. So, it was February, and it’s nothing to do with my recent announcement. There were four presenters, and four presenters is too many for that show anyway. There you have it.”

Andrew Ingleton resigns as Cricket Victoria chief executive

Andrew Ingleton has resigned as Cricket Victoria chief executive with Nick Cummins, the BBL general manager with the state, appointed to an interim position.Ingleton, who held the role for three years, oversaw a period where Cricket Victoria significantly cut back on its community cricket staff as part of major job losses during the early stages of the pandemic.Cricket Victoria also disbanded the boards of the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades which made the two chief executive positions redundant. In a statement, Cricket Victoria said discussions over Ingleton’s departure had been going on since the start of the year.”I’d like to thank the board, senior management and staff for the opportunity to lead and work with them over the last three years. Our people are an outstanding group of dedicated professionals who are passionate about seeing cricket continue to thrive in this state,” Ingleton said.”I’d also like to extend special thanks to all of our players, coaches and support staff for their extraordinary commitment and resilience during 2020-21 to deliver a successful season, against all the odds.””I’m proud of the on-field performance of our Big Bash clubs and our men’s and women’s state teams and believe Cricket Victoria has unearthed some future stars for Australian cricket.Cricket Victoria chair David Maddocks said: “At a personal level I’d like to sincerely thank Andrew for the leadership, support and passion he has invested as chief executive over the last three years. The season we have just completed has come with some extraordinary challenges, but the organisation is well-positioned to recover from the Covid impacts and reinvest in Victorian cricket,”

Forget Fullkrug: West Ham to bid for "complete forward" who’d be Tevez 2.0

West Ham United are gearing up for the 2024/25 Premier League campaign under new manager Julen Lopetegui, with the aim of bettering their ninth-place finish last season and returning to the European qualification spots.

They have already been busy in the market, acquiring Wolves defender Max Kilman, and highly rated Brazilian, Luis Guilherme, but the transfer activity doesn't look set to conclude there.

The Hammers continue to be linked with a host of players, in a host of different positions, including recent links to Borussia Dortmund striker Niclas Füllkrug, who scored two goals at Euro 2024 for Germany.

niclas-fullkrug-premier-league-transfers-everton

West Ham's search for a striker

According to reports from Bolavip Brasil, West Ham are ready to make their first official offer to Corinthians for talented striker, Yuri Alberto. The report suggests the Hammers have made recent inquiries about the player, and are expected to make that interest official.

Corinthians striker Yuri Alberto

The report also indicates Everton were interested in the 23-year-old forward. However, no official offer was made by the Toffees, and other names have been prioritised by Sean Dyche and co.

Alberto made 36 appearances in all competitions last season for Corinthians, scoring 17 goals, providing three assists, and totalling 2,679 minutes of football.

Why Alberto can be West Ham's new Carlos Tevez

Alberto has been dubbed as a "complete forward" by Jacek Kulig, praising his powerful, athletic qualities and killer instinct. His ability to be a nuisance up top, using that athleticism, speed and tenacity, brings the comparison of a certain Carlos Tevez.

Tevez made 29 appearances in all competitions for West Ham in the 2006/07 season, scoring seven goals and providing four assists to help steer the club clear of relegation, with his overall work rate and effort – which saw him described as "like a terrier" by Sir Alex Ferguson – subsequently earning him a move to Manchester United.

West Ham could be looking for lightning to strike twice, acquiring another striker from Corinthians (same as Tevez), who can provide a wide set of skills to the Hammers forward line.

While a lesser-known target, that comparison to Tevez should make Alberto a worthy option to consider for the Hammers and a perfect alternative to the aforementioned Fullkrug as the club's new number nine.

Fullkrug made 46 appearances for Dortmund in all competitions last season, scoring 16 goals, providing ten assists, and totalling 3,605 minutes, proving to be an important player in their Champions League run, finishing runners-up.

niclas-fullkrug

Both strikers bring different assets. Fullkrug is more of a hold-up play centre-forward, bringing others into play, using his 6 foot 2 frame, winning aerial duels as seen by his 3.49 aerials won per 90 metric, and being a threat in the box.

Alberto is smaller at 5 foot 10, but is a more complete archetype of striker, running the channels and being a counter-attacking threat, linking up play, while proving very instinctive and clinical around the box, but also good in the air for his height.

The 23-year-old Corinthians striker offers the extra shot volume in attack for the Hammers, averaging 3.04 per 90, whilst bringing that complete centre-forward play to the club, allowing him to link up with the wide men, who offer such a huge goal threat of their own.

As stated above, Alberto may be something of a left-field choice, but as the Irons found with the signing of Tevez, looking to the South American market can prove fruitful.

Man Utd chiefs ready to sell £190,000-p/w star who Ten Hag called "massive"

Looking to raise their summer funds, Manchester United are reportedly ready to listen to offers to sell one of Erik ten Hag's star players in the coming months amid new interest in his services.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils are yet to secure their first arrival of the summer, but reports suggest that the likes of Joshua Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt could be on the cards. The latter has reportedly given a green light to the move and Manchester United are now in pole position to sign the Bayern Munich ace, who would undoubtedly improve their backline.

Imagine him & De Ligt: Man Utd scouting "electric" Shaw replacement

The impressive full-back could be a game-changer for United.

By

Jul 3, 2024

The Dutchman is currently away on international duty with the Netherlands as they hope to go all the way at Euro 2024. Once the tournament is over in Germany, however, De Ligt could be set to step into the Premier League and replace Raphael Varane in Ten Hag's defence.

The former Real Madrid star left as a free agent at the end of last season following a mixed spell at Old Trafford, but he might not be the only defender who needs replacing this summer.

Bayern Munich defender Matthijs De Ligt

According to TalkSport, Manchester United are now ready to listen to offers for Harry Maguire this summer just one year since his move to West Ham United failed to materialise. A lot has happened in a year for the defender who earns a reported £190k-a-week, however.

Maguire has gone from almost certain for the exit door to a player who battled back well to earn a place in Ten Hag's plans once again. Alas, last season's resurgence doesn't seem to have been enough, with United ready to cash in amid reported interest from the Serie A.

Of course, the Red Devils can end any hope of making any money back from their hefty £80m investment to sign Maguire back in 2019, but they may at least be in a position to use his potential exit towards increasing their current budget.

Selling "massive" Maguire is a mistake at this stage

With Lisandro Martinez's recent history far from reliable and Varane already out the door, Manchester United simply cannot afford to lose a resurgent Maguire at this stage. Even with De Ligt possibly on the way, Ten Hag lacks enough depth at the heart of his defence to avoid the catastrophe of dropping the likes of Casemiro into his backline for the second consecutive season.

The Dutchman could yet find a place for the England international next season, having been full of praise for Maguire at the start of the last campaign. Ten Hag said via Sports Mole: "[Maguire] was playing a massive, massive game. A very good performance. He showed leadership and in and out of possession he was very good, so I'm very pleased with that performance from Harry."

With that said, Maguire will be an interesting one to watch this summer, with his return to form seemingly not enough to add security to his role at Old Trafford next season

Cummins, Paine's 'huge shift' in understanding racism

Australia’s Test captain, vice-captain on how BLM has opened up their world around sensitive issues

Daniel Brettig24-Dec-2020

Pat Cummins revealed he has at times been guilty of making hurtful “one liners” to players of colour•Getty Images

Australia’s Test captain Tim Paine and vice-captain Pat Cummins have admitted to spending most of their professional lives in blissful ignorance of racism in the society around them. Cummins revealed he had at times been guilty of making the sorts of hurtful “one liners” to players of colour that the national team have pledged to stamp out.Paine and Cummins were speaking as part of a series of videos put together by the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) and Cricket Australia (CA), under the banner of “Reflect Forward” as Australia’s national sport reckons with a long history of misdeeds in terms of inclusiveness. CA’s efforts to recognise Aboriginal Australia have been demonstrated by how both men’s and women’s teams now commence every series with a barefoot circle acknowledgement of first nations people, while the Johnny Mullagh Medal will be presented to the player of the MCG Test. The Australian women’s team have already broken down numerous barriers in their openness to discussing such issues, and it has taken time for the men to follow suit. The national team coach Justin Langer has conceded more should have been done earlier in enhancing his players’ understanding, something underlined by how Paine and Cummins spoke. Cummins, articulate and well-rounded, spoke volumes when he admitted to making comments he now regrets.”Just taking that extra second to think about what you say or do,” he said when asked about how he counselled young people to handle racism. “You might try to throw in a joke and I’ve definitely done this in the past, you say a little one liner or something off the top of your head and then just making sure you actually reflect on that and go actually ‘that’s not me’ or ‘I’ve said the wrong thing there, I don’t believe that, I don’t know why I’ve said that, and I hate how I’ve made that person feel’.”So try and fix that, try to make it a learning experience, but as a kid, just make up your own mind, your own opinions, don’t just go with the flow of other people around you. And if you do something you’re not comfortable with or you see something you’re not comfortable with, try and find a way you can get your message across to them that hang on, I don’t think this is acceptable, I hope you can think about that and reflect on that and maybe be better next time.”While Paine’s leadership has been strengthened by his own worldliness, having experienced life outside the elite end of the game to the point of considering retirement in 2017, he also spoke of how little he had actually considered issues of racism for the vast majority of his career.”Mine has only shifted in the last 12 months since the whole Black Lives Matter thing started to take off,” Paine said. “I was probably someone who, if I am totally honest, had my head in the sand a little bit and because it probably wasn’t a part of my world I didn’t have it as a big issue. That’s really opened my eyes to things and issues our Indigenous people, black people and people of all sort of different cultures around the world go through.Tim Paine says his awareness around BLM has greatly increased since the movement has gathered steam•Ryan Pierse/Getty Images

“For me, again, I probably just turned a blind eye to it a little bit, but since this has sort of got going I have taken time to speak to teammates — whether it’s in Tasmania or Hurricanes or club cricket — about how they feel about it and how it affects them. I probably didn’t realise how bad it was for people in our day. You saw it as something that was a long time ago and almost that attitude of ‘what can I do to help that anyway’. For me my learning has come from speaking to teammates, understanding more how it affects them and how I can help them through that.”The platform we have now as Australian cricketers, not that we can fix every issue, but we can use that platform to make more of us aware of it and hopefully more people who are like me that it doesn’t affect on a day to day basis, to realise there’s a lot of people out there that it does and we can help them in a small way. My learnings are how much it affects some of my teammates and me being unaware of that for probably 15 years as a professional cricketer. So just the shift in that now.”Cummins spoke of how he had recently read the seminal Bruce Pascoe book , which has helped raise fresh perspectives on the intricacies of Aboriginal Australia in the years before European settlement of the continent.”The biggest shift I have had in the past year or so is just around our Indigenous culture here in Australia,” Cummins said. “Obviously at school you learn a little bit about it, I remember reading about the Stolen Generation, small parts; the boomerang, the didgeridoo, dream time, but never really in depth. It was always ‘that’s the past’, that’s what that culture was, not that it still exists.”But the biggest shift for me was . It’s a great book that came out a few years ago and it talks about how productive, how intelligent and how incredible the culture was at not only surviving, but thriving. How closely they were intertwined with the land. It kind of shifted my perspective. I guess I had just thought a lot of Indigenous people were foragers and just surviving off the land, but I found out they would burn certain fires to make sure the bush survived, they would look after certain flora and fauna.”They had this whole eco system that was so finely tuned over 60,000 years. It shifted my perspective to wow these cultures are absolute experts on this land we live in, and we don’t really tap into it nowadays. Just huge admiration and respect for the history. Australia has all this history I didn’t even know about a year ago and I feel real proud to be an Aussie.”Paine added that in his experience, the calling out of racist language needed to be done in a way that would reduce, wherever possible, the amount of hurt felt by the victim. “I’ve heard a few throwaway lines in the gym or at training over the years. The simple thing is to call it out,” Paine said. “For me it is just going over to them, rather than making a big scene over it, which can make the situation worse for the person that’s had the comment made to.”A couple of times it’s been literally going over to a teammate one-on-one. The ones I have been around haven’t meant to insult the person, it’s been a throwaway line, someone thinking they have been funny because it is something that’s been in sports change rooms for a long, long time.”Tap them on the shoulder and let them know the comment has probably been hurtful and harmful to the person it was aimed at. A quiet conversation and make them aware it is not on and make sure they speak to the person it was aimed at.”
