Azam Khan is in the mix for the T20 World Cup squad•Pakistan Super League

Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Azam Khan has been ruled out of the ongoing five-match T20I series against New Zealand after picking up a grade one tear in his right calf muscle. After radiology reports confirmed the injury, Azam was advised rest for ten days.A statement from the PCB said that Azam will now leave the Pakistan squad and report to the National Cricket Academy in Lahore, where he will “commence his rehabilitation process under the supervision of the PCB medical panel”. The statement added that the problem was first noticed when Azam was training ahead of the first T20I on Thursday, which was washed out after just two balls.Azam has so far played eight T20Is, the last of which also came against New Zealand this January. But, despite a big reputation as a hitter, Azam has tallied just 29 runs across seven innings with a highest score of 10. In the latest PSL, for example, although Azam got just 226 runs in ten innings for Islamabad United, they came at a high strike rate of 171. United won the tournament. That reputation, plus a good showing at the last edition of the CPL – where he scored 224 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 155.55 for champions Guyana Amazon Warriors – have put him in contention for a spot in Pakistan’s squad for the T20 World Cup, which will be played in June in the Caribbean and the USA. Pakistan have recently brought back Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim, two players with CPL pedigree who were out of the picture but have come back into the mix. After the series against New Zealand concludes on April 27, Pakistan are scheduled to play another seven matches in the lead-up to the World Cup, three in Ireland and four in England.

Ponting: 'The Impact Player rule almost negates the role of allrounders'

The Delhi Capitals head coach, however, expects Mitchell Marsh to play a big part in the upcoming season

Tom Moody: Impact Player rule might make it harder to develop Indian allrounders

The new Impact Player rule at IPL 2023 could well mean curtains for “bits and pieces allrounders”. This is the view of Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting, who spoke of the several possibilities this could open up in terms of team combination and strategy. As things stand, the Impact Player can only be an Indian unless there are fewer than four overseas players in the starting XI.Related

How much impact will the Impact Player rule have?

Ponting expects 'the real Prithvi Shaw' to make an appearance in IPL 2023

'My best can match it with anyone' – Mitchell Marsh

David Warner to lead Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023

Pant: I've found happiness in even being able to brush my teeth

“It [usage of Impact Player] depends if you bat or bowl first,” Ponting said at an event in New Delhi. “So at the toss, we will be putting in a bowling-first team and a batting-first team. And obviously if you bat first, you’re probably going to sub in a batter. Or if you bat first and lose an early wicket, you might want to bring in a batter straight on top of that. So there are a number of different ways to use it.”It actually almost negates the role of allrounders in the game now. So unless they’re absolutely world-class and they’re getting picked either as a batsman or as a bowler, not sort of a bits and pieces guy, then I don’t think you’ll see many, many teams this year actually use the guy that might bat at seven and maybe bowling over or two. Because you don’t need those guys anymore.”The one allrounder who Capitals will definitely be keeping an eye out for, though, is Mitchell Marsh. He has just finished an ODI series in India, which Australia won 2-1, where he played as a specialist batter due to his ongoing recovery from a keyhole surgery on his left ankle. Come the IPL, he is expected to ease himself back to full tilt.Marsh had a decent IPL 2022 at the top of the order, scoring 251 runs in eight games at a strike rate of 132.80. He only bowled sporadically, though; his 12 overs fetching four wickets at an economy of 8.50. Ponting is confident Marsh will have a bigger role to play this season.1:27

Ponting: No Pant leaves big hole, still undecided on wicketkeeper

“He’s had three or four months off in Australia; he’s recovered from an ankle surgery that he had, I think back in November,” Ponting said. “He hasn’t bowled in the games yet, but he’s been bowling for the last five or six weeks. So by the time he gets here with us, his role in our team will be to bowl some overs as well. He knows that and understands that.”And I think we saw in this one-day series [against India] how destructive he can be [at the top of the order]. But we also saw on a couple of occasions last year for DC [Delhi Capitals] at the No. 3 slot he played some match-winning roles there as well. So he’s a really important player for us. World-class international allrounders are not easy to come across and not easy to find. So are hoping that he has his best IPL season till date as well.”The biggest concern at the moment for Capitals is filling in the void left by Rishabh Pant, who continues to recover from injuries sustained in a serious car crash in December last year. David Warner has been named as stand-in captain for the season, but the team management is yet to decide on who will be taking the wicketkeeping gloves. They have just one frontline option at the moment in England’s Phil Salt, but are readying a couple of makeshift options in India’s Manish Pandey and Sarfaraz Khan. Both players are being put through the paces, should the need arise. In addition, they have also called up four uncapped Indian wicketkeepers – Luvnith Sisodia, Sheldon Jackson, Abishek Porel and Vivek Singh – to their training camp. It’s likely one of them will be signed as a replacement shortly. All said, Ponting believes it will take multiple players to fill the hole Pant has left behind.”So when we are talking about losing some power in middle-order, Aman Khan, Rovman Powell and someone like Axar Patel, whose batting has improved a lot in last 12 months, we will find ways to cover for Rishabh, but we will not get same quality player,” Ponting said. “Aman Khan is one that has really impressed us and we traded Shardul (Thakur) with KKR [Kolkata Knight Riders] to get him in and he has been ultra-impressive and I don’t know how much you have seen of him and his last couple of days at training has been pretty special.”

All-round Athapaththu and Bates' record keeps Thunder in contention for home grand final

The left-arm spinner produced the most economical spell in WBBL history as the hosts put on a dominant display against the leaders

Chamari Athapaththu led Thunder’s surge to victory•Getty Images

In-form Chamari Athapaththu claimed two wickets before powering Sydney Thunder past Perth Scorchers at Cricket Central ground as the race for the WBBL’s top spot heats up.Athapaththu was part of Thunder’s disciplined spin brigade that restricted Scorchers to a lowly 116 for 8 in the day fixture. In reply, Athapaththu took over after a disastrous run out of Phoebe Litchfield, who had replaced Tahlia Wilson at the top of the order.Having not responded to Litchfield’s call at the non-striker’s end, Athapaththu made amends with her blistering 77 off 53 balls marked by a calculated assault on legspinner Alana King. She was well supported by captain Heather Knight as Thunder cruised to the target in the 17th over.Star allrounder Nat Sciver-Brunt bowled for the first time this season, but it was to no avail as Scorchers’ four-match winning streak was snapped. It was a vital victory for Thunder, who pulled within one point of league leaders Scorchers.Thunder elected to bowl first in what appeared a brave decision amid a flat surface and sunny conditions in Sydney. They had to confront a red-hot Scorchers batting order led by stars Beth Mooney and Sophie Devine, who have enjoyed rekindling their partnership at the top.Having started the season at No. 4, Devine has excelled alongside Mooney and they appeared to be once again powering Scorchers to a big total. After a cautious start warding off seam movement from the new ball, Devine made her move by clubbing seamer Marizanne Kapp down the ground for a belligerent boundary. It also ignited left-handed batter Mooney, who had earlier struggled to pierce a stacked off side field with Kapp angling the ball across her. She smashed Kapp for consecutive fours and hit four boundaries in the space of five balls.Mooney, who had scored 289 runs and only dismissed once in her last four innings, had a life on 25 when she was dropped at extra cover by Knight. It appeared Thunder would rue the missed chance, but two balls later Mooney was trapped lbw by offspinner Lauren Smith. It triggered a collapse with seamer Sammy-Jo Johnson in the next over claiming her 100th WBBL wicket after bowling Devine, who failed to connect on a delivery that didn’t bounce as high as she anticipated.Given the form of Devine and Mooney, Sciver-Brunt hadn’t been greatly required in her five matches this season. It loomed as a perfect scenario for her, but Sciver-Brunt’s stay at the crease was brief after being bowled by Smith on eight.Left-arm spinner Samantha Bates, who finished with the remarkable figures of 1 for 6 off four overs, strangled Scorchers in the middle overs. It was the most economical four-over spell in WBBL history. Young batter Maddy Darke was notably pinned down and inevitably succumbed on Knight’s second delivery.Scorchers kept losing wickets with Chloe Piparo clean bowled by Athapaththu in an ungainly dismissal that signified their plight. At 78 for 7 in the 17th over, Scorchers looked set for the ignominy of a score less than three figures before an aggressive Amy Jones slugged 37 from just 16 balls.Jones in the 19th over hit Scorchers’ first six of the innings and she added another, but their subpar total proved light work for Thunder who banked an invaluable victory.

Cost £0: Man Utd hit gold on "generational" star worth more than Rashford

Manchester United’s woes this season have been epitomised over the international break, with there notably having not been a single Red Devils representative named in Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad.

With the likes of Harry Maguire, Mason Mount, Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo all making their respective returns from injury, United’s only connection to the Three Lions this time around was that of Marcus Rashford, albeit with the 27-year-old currently on loan at Aston Villa.

The Old Trafford outcast started in both games against Albania and Latvia, although endured two mixed performances on the flanks, with Tuchel admitting that he had “spoken” to both Rashford and Phil Foden following Friday’s win.

The United academy graduate has, it must be said, enjoyed a lively start to life at Villa Park after racking up four assists from just nine outings for his new side, yet the wait goes on to break his duck in the Midlands.

Even amid the shortage of attacking depth in Ruben Amorim’s ranks, few will be truly lamenting the decision to loan out Rashford back in January, with it already looking like the end of his lengthy association with the Manchester side.

Why Marcus Rashford should be sold this summer

It is now just over nine years ago that a teenage Rashford burst onto the scene following that brace against FC Midtjylland in February 2016, with the 18-year-old capitalising on a centre-forward injury crisis to force his way into Louis van Gaal’s senior set-up.

A further 136 goals and 425 games have followed in the time since, although it would appear that the forward’s time at Old Trafford has come to its conclusion, not least with Villa holding a £40m option to buy this summer.

Not long ago, Rashford had looked almost “unstoppable” after returning from the 2022 World Cup, as per then-boss Erik ten Hag, with the Englishman ultimately finishing that 2022/23 campaign with 30 goals to his name at club level.

£300k-per-week deal in the summer of 2023, albeit with the long-serving star failing to kick on since then, having scored just eight times last season.

A muted start to the current campaign, which yielded just seven goals, was followed by an imposed exile amid Amorim’s appointment, with Rashford having not been seen in a United shirt since being left out for the Manchester Derby back in December.

Previously described as a “major major problem” for the club by journalist Liam Canning, Rashford did himself outline his desire for a “new challenge” late last year, with talk of a dream move to Barcelona on the cards, prior to his switch to Villa.

That now looks to have marked the beginning of the end for his United journey – hopefully the same isn’t true of Kobbie Mainoo.

Man Utd have struck gold on Rashford 2.0

Despite the way it appears to be ending, Rashford’s spell at United has largely represented a real bright spot in an at times bleak post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, with the forward’s rise from academy prospect to first-team talisman having been simply meteoric.

Now, amid the ongoing PSR restrictions, cashing in on the Manchester-born striker would represent astute business for the club, particularly if that £40m price tag is met.

While there may also be a temptation to nudge other academy talents towards the exit door, it would be a crying shame for young Mainoo to follow suit, despite talk surrounding a £70m move to Chelsea back in January.

There have been whispers in recent months that the teenager may even look to move abroad after a stall in contract talks, albeit with a more recent update indicating that the latest negotiations over a new deal have been ‘positive’.

The 19-year-old has endured an injury-hit season, although it was not too long ago that he looked the type of player that United should be building around – a point that pundit Jack Wilshere also thought was true at international level:

Who can forget the midfielder’s decisive strike in the FA Cup final, nor his delightful, curling effort in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool. Those moments of magic had come following a sublime solo goal away at Molineux in the 4-3 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers back in February 2024.

Described as a “generational talent” by teammate Rasmus Hojlund, Mainoo – who started every knockout stage game at Euro 2024 – hasn’t enjoyed a smooth ride under the new Amorim regime, although he did showcase his credentials in a number ten berth after scoring and assisting away at FCSB.

In truth, the United boss must find a home for the midfield maestro in his 3-4-3 set-up, with it likely to represent a real waste of talent and potential if Mainoo simply tumbles down the pecking order.

Manchester United – Kobbie Mainoo

Indeed, the youngster’s status is indicated best by the fact that he is now worth around £46m, according to Transfermarkt, placing him ahead of that man Rashford in that regard, with the latter man deemed to be worth £42m.

Having followed in his teammate’s footsteps after rising from the youth ranks, Mainoo can now kick on and show just why he is United and England’s future. Rashford, meanwhile, could well be resigned to the past on both fronts.
