It's strange but it's fun – Hazlewood on Perth Stadium pitch

Josh Hazlewood has given his stamp of approval to the Perth Stadium pitch but has also admitted to being puzzled by its characteristics. The pitch has played differently throughout each day of the Test, at times offering considerable assistance to the bowlers – particularly through the aid of cracks and divots – while at others the demons subside and the batsmen regain some advantage.”Yeah it’s a strange one,” Hazlewood said. “You see obviously patches where it’s flying around and hitting the cracks and then for a period it’ll go pretty quiet and it’s manageable to bat.”I think definitely right-armer around the wicket to left-handed batters there’s more cracks on offer. I feel when I’m bowling to all the right-handers it feels a little bit more like a normal wicket, there’s not as many cracks there or up and down but yeah, from time to time it jumps around and then it can calms down.”The morning sessions seems like they’re a little bit better for batting – I’m not sure why – and then as the day goes in I think the cracks might reappear. It’s an interesting one with the drop-in wicket as well so yeah not too sure.”Josh Hazlewood produced a good one to remove Cheteshwar Pujara•Getty Images

Drop-in pitches have largely been panned in Australia for their homogeneity and the loss of individual quirks that characterised each major ground, in the past giving the Gabba it’s quick and bouncy surface or providing the steady deterioration at Adelaide Oval in the manner of a traditional five-day pitch. While the WACA surface has steadily lost its reputation for fearsome pace, there were questions surrounding the nature of the drop-in pitch and the kind of cricket it would produce. The base elements of the Perth Stadium pitches at Gloucester Park, next to the WACA, are characterised by a high clay content, which helps give the surface its extra bounce.Overall, Hazlewood’s verdict was a positive one, and he agreed that it was a fun surface on which to play.”Yeah I think so,” said Hazlewood. “That’s from a bowlers point of view, definitely. But we’ve seen hundreds as well and quite a few guys getting fifties and it’s obviously gone to the fifth day, so there’s plenty there, and I think it’s exciting that things can happen any time of the day and its pretty competitive with bat and ball.”I think if you’re comparing to the WACA, where its obviously not a drop-in at the WACA and the cracks just keep getting bigger and bigger, these have appeared pretty early and I guess haven’t widened too much, if that makes sense. So yeah, it’s definitely different.”

PCB rethinking Mohsin Khan's appointment to cricket committee

ESPNcricinfo understands the board is displeased with his recent slew of public comments and has reportedly placed a gag order on him

It’s only been two weeks since a four-member cricket committee came into being to oversee Pakistan’s cricket affairs, and though they may not have begun their work properly just yet, they’ve been in the news every single day. That is almost entirely down to Mohsin Khan, the head of committee, who’s made a number of public statements that have put the PCB in an awkward position and have raised tensions with other stakeholders. This, ESPNcricinfo understands, has compelled the PCB to start rethinking its decision to appoint him, and it has reportedly placed a gag order on his public comments. The PCB has refused to confirm or deny whether it has asked him to stop talking so publicly.”My statements are wrongly being taken and few people who are against my appointment are doing propaganda,” Mohsin told ESPNcricinfo. “I am here to serve my country and I have had never a discipline issue ever in my entire career. I don’t want to go into details and want to ignore all the negative stuff. I am directly reportable to chairman and he is perfectly fine with me.”Mohsin has riled up coach Mickey Arthur as well as captain Sarfraz Ahmed in his short tenure so far. In comments made just before his appointment, Mohsin called Arthur a “stupid donkey” on a TV channel. Soon after he argued that Sarfraz should be relieved of the Test captaincy. All that came after his very appointment had forced the PCB into an apparent disowning of the Qayyum Report on match-fixing – something it was then keen to insist was not the case. Arthur is understood to want an apology from Mohsin – the pair, according to the terms of the committee, officially meet three times a year – though the PCB chairman Ehsan Mani has said only that all parties should move on from the matter.Chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq is also thought to be annoyed by Mohsin’s public comments on selection matters. He has reached out and sought clarity from the board about the committee’s role and suggested that he will not be happy with any intervention in selection affairs. ESPNcricinfo understands that Mohsin’s role and behaviour has been discussed among senior board officials, discussions that have also brought up names of who could replace him should he continue as he has done. All of Mohsin’s comments have been made to TV channels, a few of them to to whom he is contracted as an expert for this home season. It is not clear what officials think of his TV commitments though, as his PCB role is honorary, it is unlikely they can get him to stop them.

15 famous celebrities who have called Lionel Messi the GOAT of football

Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo is an age-old debate in the world of football that some fans can’t get enough of, and others are sick and tired of.

Those of an older generation will bring names such as Pele and Diego Maradona into the mix but nowadays, it is the battle between Barcelona and Real Madrid, between Messi and Ronaldo.

This isn’t an argument that evades the elite either, with celebrities in all walks of life having their opinion – from fellow footballers to Hollywood A-listers.

So, who is the GOAT of football?

Well, here at Football FanCast we have gathered the names of 15 famous celebrities that believe Lionel Messi, now of Inter Miami, to be football’s Greatest Of All Time, a.k.a. the GOAT.

Lionel Messi – Everything You Need to Know

15 Andy Murray

The world of tennis is where we begin and some of the greats with a racket in hand have weighed in on the debate.

Novak Djokovic has leaned in the direction of Ronaldo for example but Britain’s finest Andy Murray has a different opinion.

Murray, who is a two-time Wimbledon champion, tweeted this in the wake of Argentina’s World Cup win last year. “Is Messi the best athlete of all time? Forget just football. What a man.”

14 Lebron James

American sports may be where the term GOAT has originated from and one man who is in the debate across the Atlantic is LeBron James.

Michael Jordan is the name who comes up most in the world of basketball but James can’t be far behind and he is of course still playing as well.

LeBron is a keen Liverpool fan and he was hugely active on social media following the 2022 Qatar World Cup as well.

The LA Lakers star who is a 4-time NBA Champion and a 4-time NBA MVP, used Messi’s name alongside a goat emoji to show his support for the Inter Miami man.

13 Barack Obama

In terms of world recognition, you don’t get much more famous than former U.S. president Barack Obama.

Him and his wife Michelle are hugely beloved figures by many across the pond and he is known as a big sports fan too.

Goal wrote in 2019 that “Obama's confirmed soccer teams remain the USMNT and USWNT, as well as whatever teams his daughters Malia and Sasha are playing for” with there being no official evidence of who his club team may be.

Whether he prefers Barcelona or Real Madrid, the former president pledged his allegiance to Messi when he lifted the World Cup, tweeting this.

“Congrats to Argentina and to the GOAT, Lionel Messi, for an amazing World Cup victory.”

12 Rafael Nadal

Tennis is another sport where the GOAT debate is extremely fierce with the three modern greats being at the fore of the conversation in the men’s game.

Serena Williams is perhaps a shoo-in for women’s tennis whereas Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are all in the mix on the men’s side of things.

Nadal, as a Spaniard, is naturally a passionate football fan with Real Madrid being his team.

He may support Los Blancos, for whom Ronaldo scored so many goals and produced so many memorable moments, but when asked which way he leaned whilst in Greece, he dropped this truth bomb.

"Messi is better but I’m a Madrid fan."

11 Diego Schwartzman

Remaining in the same sport and ahead of the Shanghai Masters earlier this year, a number of superstars were asked for their GOATs away from tennis.

Michael Jordan was a name that many said unsurprisingly, and Daniil Medvedev actually said either Ronaldo or Messi as he is a huge football fan.

Tiger Woods and Kobe Bryant also got mentioned whilst Diego Schwartzman, who is Argentinian himself, said “Easy question. Messi and Maradona.”

When asked to choose between the two greats of his country, Schwartzman refused and stuck to his guns.

10 Sam Quek

Sam Quek was a member of the infamous Great British hockey team that won Gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Alongside her success with a hockey stick in hand, she is now a captain on A Question of Sport, sitting opposite former rugby player Ugo Monye.

Quek loves her football and it is no secret that she is a Liverpool fan.

Like many people on this list, her comments were made following the World Cup win of last year with Lionel Messi finally get his hands on the holy grail.

Quek said the debate between Messi and Ronaldo was “fun while it lasted' but that it was now 'Finished. Settled. Confirmed.'”

9 Jake Paul

Some people will question Jake Paul’s celebrity status but when you look beyond the controversy, his success is there for all to see.

Similar to his brother Logan Paul and KSI, Jake has rose to fame online with YouTube being a key platform before trying his hand at music and boxing.

He watched the Qatar World Cup along with billions of others and came to the same conclusion as a lot of them as well.

“Hard to admit as an American… but Messi may be the greatest athlete ever. 5’7, 148lbs… Greatest non-penalty scorer of all time, greatest assister of all time. In a sport that has more people playing it than any other. GAOAT. Agree?”

Paul went on to say that “Muhammad Ali [was] still the most impactful though”, but his vote still lies with Messi in football and in the wider sporting world as well.

8 Tom Brady

Michael Jordan as the GOAT of basketball is a common opinion, but someone who may rival him when it comes to American sports as a whole is Tom Brady.

Brady won six Super Bowls as quarterback for the New England Patriots and then won one in Tampa as well, his seven championships and five MVP awards being records for a player in the NFL.

There are so many stats to show off the excellence of Tom Brady and so he certainly knows what he is talking about when it comes to the greatest athletes of all time.

With that being said, it makes sense that Brady gave his vote for Messi, saying this: “I think he is a great player, still, I’m older than him.”

7 Chris Pratt

Our first foray into the world of Hollywood takes us to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the Guardian of the Galaxy himself, Star-Lord.

Chris Pratt is the actor in question, best known for his role in James Gunn’s hugely profitable trilogy, as well also having featured in Parks and Recreation and Jurassic World.

Pratt backs Messi as the GOAT and he isn't the only member of his family to do so, via Essentially Sports.

“Of course. He [Messi] is the greatest of all time now. My son says there is no question that he is the greatest.”

6 Tom Holland

Talking of the MCU and Spider-Man himself has weighed in on this age-old debate.

Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield have previously played the role but huge Tottenham Hotspur fan Tom Holland is the current man seen swinging from building to building in New York.

Speaking to El Pais, the Spurs supporter chose between the two El Clasico teams.

“Barcelona or Real Madrid? Forca Barca, I just love Messi.”

Southampton: Martin must start his £52k-p/w ace who loves playing Hull

Southampton return to action after the international break in the Championship this afternoon as they travel away from St. Mary's to take on Hull City.

Russell Martin's side are coming into this clash off the back of a 1-1 draw with Rotherham at home in their last league outing, thanks to a stunning equaliser from Jordan Hugill.

The Scottish head coach may look to make changes to his starting XI in order to bounce back and claim all three points today but one player he must stick with is Che Adams.

Southampton had 22 shots and racked up 3.23 xG against Rotherham but failed to secure the win as they only found the back of the net once from those efforts, which puts the attacking players in the spotlight as they were unable to make the most of the chances that fell their way.

What's the latest on Ross Stewart's fitness?

The Scotland international has been in first-team training with the Saints in recent weeks as he continues to step up his recovery from the Achilles injury that was suffered at the start of the year during his time with Sunderland.

Former Sunderland striker Ross Stewart.

However, it appears that his involvement against Hull will be limited to a place on the bench, at best, as the club try to ease him into the fold after his move from the Black Cats during the summer window.

This means that Southampton's alternative striker option is Sekou Mara, who has scored one goal in 28 league appearances since the start of last season.

The French attacker has failed to contribute with a single goal, assist, or 'big chance' created, in six Championship clashes so far this term, after one goal in 22 Premier League games during the 2022/23 campaign.

Will Che Adams start against Hull?

With Stewart unlikely to start, Martin must start Adams against the Tigers this afternoon as the talented marksman has the potential to be the match-winner.

The 27-year-old whiz missed one 'big chance' against Rotherham but he has also scored three goals and created three 'big chances' in five Championship starts this term.

Only Adam Armstrong (seven) has scored more goals for the club this term and these statistics suggest that the Scottish gem does have the quality to make a big impact at this level.

Southampton forward Che Adams.

Adams also loves playing against Hull as he boasts a terrific career record against today's opponents from his time with Birmingham in the second tier.

The £52k-per-week finisher has scored four goals in three matches against the Tigers so far and has not scored more than four against any other team at any level. They are also the only side that the impressive forward has scored four against in fewer than five matches.

Therefore, Adams, who Ralph Hasenhuttl once hailed for his "fantastic" attitude, should retain his place within the starting line-up this afternoon, instead of dropping him in favour of Mara or Stewart, who is lacking match fitness.

The Scotland international has proven himself to be an excellent option at Championship level, in spite of his off-day against Rotherham, and has the potential to add to his superb record against Hull today.

County cricket would improve my game – Kohli

The India captain has been strongly linked with Surrey in recent months with the BCCI keen that key players have the chance to get used to conditions in England

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Apr-2018Virat Kohli remains eager for a spell in county cricket ahead of India’s tour of England later this year after it was confirmed last month that the BCCI had granted permission for him to seek a deal.Test success in England remains the one major missing piece to Kohli’s stellar career after he endured a torrid series in 2014 where he made 134 runs in five Tests at 13.40.He was strongly linked with Surrey recently but a deal has not been confirmed. The county are in need of overseas cover, however, having lost Mitchell Marsh to injury. They have signed Dean Elgar for the first two months of the season but a window in June which fits with Kohli’s schedule after the IPL remains a possibility, although that would mean Kohli missing the one-off Test against Afghanistan.”Playing county cricket will help me improve my game,” Kohli told NDTV. “I think it makes things more challenging and more competitive and there are no guarantees whether you are going to do well even if you go in advance.”It’s just about giving yourself more opportunity to get used to the conditions that you are not used to.”Two of India’s senior Test players, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ishant Sharma, are already playing county cricket for Yorkshire and Sussex respectively. Pujara’s first outing, against Essex, was abandoned without a ball bowled at Headingley but Ishant impressed with five wickets against Warwickshire. The BCCI is keen to learn from the experience in South Africa earlier this year when India arrived with barely any preparation. “This time we have been pro-active because post the South Africa experience we felt that exposure was essential for the team,” Vinod Rai, the chairman of the committee of administrators, the body governing the BCCI said.India have one four-day warm-up match, against Essex at Chelmsford, ahead of the five-match Test series which begins on August 1. In 2014 they were 1-0 up after two matches, following victory at Lord’s, but ended up losing the series 3-1.

Cost £0, now worth £16m: Everton struck gold with “outstanding” brute

Everton supporters have been through the ringer through the course of the previous two seasons and unless Sean Dyche leads them on a solid winning run, they could face yet another relegation battle.

The Toffees have finished 16th and 17th during the last two Premier League campaigns and there has been a variety of reasons behind the poor performances and lack of confidence at the club. Both Rafa Benitez and Frank Lampard were far from ideal choices to lead the Merseyside outfit, while their records in the transfer market were underwhelming to say the least.

Players such as Neal Maupay, Salomon Rondon and Dele Alli didn’t exactly set the world on fire, and it is perhaps no surprise that Lampard and Benitez failed to make their mark in charge of the club.

In saying that, there have been a few hidden gems that have moved to Everton since the summer of 2021 which have proven to be solid signings and will play become key members of the squad in the coming years.

Nathan Patterson and Dwight McNeil are talented youngsters who could become integral members of the first team for the foreseeable future, yet it is a signing made by Lampard that could potentially turn into a lucrative piece of business by the Toffees…

How much did James Tarkowski cost Everton?

After escaping relegation by the skin of their teeth at the end of the 2021/22 campaign, Lampard entered the summer transfer window with grand designs on how to bolster his squad so that this wouldn’t occur again.

japhet-tanganga-james-tarkowski-everton-transfer-premier-league

Amadou Onana looked like a promising arrival, joining from Lille, while James Garner signed from Manchester United and McNeil arrived from Burnley and these all looked like positive signings. James Tarkowski also made the move to Merseyside, and it was arguably their finest signing that summer, as he joined for nothing after he left Burnley following the expiration of his contract.

Director of football Kevin Thelwell praised the player when he joined, saying: “We are delighted to welcome a player of James’ quality to Everton and believe he will be an excellent addition to our squad. The statistics show that James has consistently been one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders in recent years. Added to his playing attributes, his excellent leadership skills and experience will be a huge benefit, too.

“James is a player I’ve admired for many years and Frank was very keen to bring him to the Club. We look forward to him being a highly-valued member of our squad next season and in the years to come.”

This was a player who had made 219 appearances for Burnley and had spent the last six seasons in the top flight, gaining plenty of experience in the process.

The move has since gone on the become a very shrewd signing by the Toffees, especially considering his market value has risen due to his performances over the previous 12 months and this could potentially generate Everton a vast profit should they be tempted to sell him.

What is James Tarkowski’s market value now?

When the centre-back moved to Everton in July 2022, his market value was only €8.4m (£7.2m), yet over the next 12 months, this value would rise sharply.

Indeed, it didn’t even take a month for Tarkowski to be valued at €29.8m (£26m) according to Football Transfers and while this has dropped slightly in the months since, the defender is now currently worth €19m (£16m), and this represents an impressive increase from when he made the move to Everton in 2022.

Why is James Tarkowski worth this much?

Although the Toffees conceded 57 goals last season and finished in 17th place, just two points clear of the relegation zone, there were a couple of bright sparks throughout the season and Tarkowski was one of them.

The 30-year-old played a total of 40 games across all competitions during his maiden season on Merseyside, and he certainly proved to the supporters why the club were keen on signing him in the first place.

James Tarkowski

Tarkowski ranked third across the Everton squad for overall Sofascore rating (7.2) during the 2022/23 season while also ranking third for accurate passes per game (34.6) and interceptions per game (1.3), clearly indicating that he settled in well at the club and was a positive figure as they narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship.

Not only impressive among his teammates, Tarkowski also showcased his abilities when compared to his positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues. Indeed, the defender ranked in the top 1% for blocks per 90 (2.46), the top 8% for aerials won per 90 (3.16) and rather remarkably the top 1% for touches in the opposition penalty area per 90 (2.33), indicating that he is among the finest on the continent over a wide range of metrics.

The former Burnley defender has continued this rich vein of form into the current season, topping the pile for Sofascore rating (7.33) and interceptions per game (1.7), while also ranking third for clearances per game (3.0) and fourth for accurate passes per game (35.6), emerging into a player Dyche can count on as he looks to lead them into the top half of the table.

Dyche knows all about his qualities, having managed him when they were both at Burnley and the 52-year-old has even lauded the defender as “outstanding” in the past.

Everton haven’t had much joy to cheer about with regard to success in the transfer market over the previous few years and this has arguably led to them underperforming and battling relegation on a consistent basis.

Tarkowski has proven to one of their few shining lights over the last year or so and his performances possibly allowed the Toffees to retain their Premier League status and without him performing heroics at the heart of the defence, they may have found themselves in the second tier this term.

There is still a long way to go in the current campaign, but Everton have no doubt hit the jackpot on Tarkowski, and they will hope he can give them the boost they need to push into the top half under Dyche.

"Embarrassing" Behind-The-Scenes Error Occurs At Liverpool

Liverpool may be impressing on the pitch at the moment, but an "embarrassing" incident has occurred away from the pitch, according to a fresh update.

What's the latest news at Liverpool?

Going into the new Premier League season, Jurgen Klopp's side felt like something of an unknown entity, having disappointed so much last time around, finishing fifth after originally being seen as title challengers.

Huge changes have happened within Liverpool's squad since the end of 2022/23, with Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch all added to the midfield, with the likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson moving on, as well as several others.

It has been a strong opening to the campaign for the Reds, however, who have won three and drawn one of their first four fixtures, having already made trips to Chelsea and Newcastle United.

Later this month, Liverpool will also get their Europa League campaign underway, and while they would much rather be plying their trade in the Champions League this season, it is still a good chance of sealing yet more silverware under Klopp – a Dublin final next year makes it even more inviting.

One of the sides who the Reds will come up against in their group is Austrian outfit LASK, who may not be a world-renowned team, but still have the potential to cause them problems if they are not fully switched on. Unfortunately, a new update suggests that a big error from Liverpool could hurt relations between the two club before they meet on September 21st.

What off-field error have Liverpool made?

According to Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung [via Sport Witness], the Reds have been made to look "weak and embarrassing" because of numerous mistakes made on the club's official website when it came to providing a report on LASK, including saying they were in the last 16 of the UEFA Europa Conference League last season, when in fact it was the year before.

It is claimed that "false information" was posted regarding them – including the "nonsense of listing former players who never actually played for them – which is seen as unforgivable given the "huge PR and media department" that Liverpool have. It is even angrily stated that LASK will beat Klopp's side in both group stage meetings in the Europa League should they show a similar level of incompetence on the pitch.

This is not a good look for Liverpool, who have largely been seen as such a well-run club since Klopp arrived at Anfield in October 2015, with everyone pulling the same direction and doing their jobs impressively.

LASK have every right to feel disrespected by the Reds, at a time when they will be looking forward to coming up against one of world football's most famous names, and while mistakes are only human, to have the official club website make such an amateur error is not a good look for the club at all.

The hope is that apologies have been made to the right people and that the relationship is not damaged too much before the two sides meet later this month, but this isn't an incident that anyone of a Liverpool persuasion will feel particularly proud of.
