Leeds could trigger release clause to sign £25m Premier League player

Leeds United could trigger the release clause of an “excellent” Premier League player, who is now likely to leave his club this summer, according to a report.

Leeds eyeing proven Premier League players

The three sides promoted from the Championship last season look like they will all be going straight back down, with Southampton sitting rock bottom, while Ipswich Town and Leicester City are currently five points from safety.

As such, you can make a case for it being more difficult than ever to make the step up back to the top flight, after dropping to the second tier, and with Leeds in a very strong position to get promoted, they are now eyeing players who have Premier League experience.

Former Chelsea man Tammy Abraham is one of the names on the list of targets in attack, while they are also considering a move for Southampton right-back Kyle Walker-Peters, who has made 140 appearances in the top flight.

Walker-Peters is not the only Saints player Daniel Farke’s side have their eye on, however, with a report from The Boot Room revealing they could trigger the relegation release clause written into goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale’s contract.

Ramsdale joined Southampton from Arsenal in a £25m deal last summer, but he is now likely to leave in the summer, with relegation from the Premier League looking increasingly likely.

There may be widespread interest in the Premier League, however, with Chelsea, Brentford and Newcastle United also being named as potential suitors.

Ramsdale has been "excellent" despite Saints' struggles

It has been a season to forget for Southampton, who have collected just nine points throughout the entire campaign, but their goalkeeper cannot be blamed for his side’s struggles, having been by far the most consistent performer in the squad.

Despite the Saints falling to a 3-1 defeat at home to Bournemouth earlier this month, Joe Hart lauded the 26-year-old’s performance as “absolutely excellent”.

The same can be said about the Englishman’s display against Brighton & Hove Albion last week, receiving by far the highest SofaScore match rating in the Southampton team after making eight saves, seven of which were from inside the box.

Southampton's AaronRamsdalelooks dejected after the match

As such, although the former Arsenal man is set to have another relegation on his CV, he cannot be blamed for the Saints’ inevitable fate, and he deserves another chance in the Premier League.

There has been doubt about Illan Meslier for quite some time, with the Frenchman making some key errors this season, most notably in the 2-2 draw at Sunderland in October, and there are plenty of indications Ramsdale would be a great replacement.

Forget Richarlison: Spurs can unleash their own Rashford in teen superstar

There’s no denying that Tottenham Hotspur have suffered a painful season, having been dealt a tough hand.

The interminable injury issues under Ange Postecoglou are showing little sign of abating right now, with fresh troops merely stepping into the boggy ground freed up by someone else falling and being pulled into the infirmary.

Tottenham were put to the sword in the Carabao Cup against Liverpool but are swiftly presented with the chance to change the mood down N17, meeting Aston Villa at Villa Park in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

To be sure, it will be difficult, but Spurs have enough in the locker to score an upset against Unai Emery’s well-drilled and plentiful side.

Spurs team news pre-Aston Villa

Micky van de Ven will not be risked as he tentatively returns from a hamstring injury that had kept him sidelined for nearly two months.

Tottenham have a host of players nearing the end of their stay in the overpacked medical room, although Spurs don’t expect any current sidelined players to be ready for the FA Cup clash.

Compounding the issue, though, Richarlison was forced off before the break against Liverpool and Postecoglou ceded that it “didn’t look good” for the Brazil forward.

With Dominic Solanke, James Maddison, Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert also unavailable, the Australian coach is going to need to look at alternative solutions, with the academy likely to be called upon.

Emery and Postecoglou are still yet to win silverware in England.

ByCharlie Smith Feb 9, 2025 Spurs must unleash their academy star

Aged 17, Mikey Moore has been one of the brightest sparks from a dreary campaign, increasingly more central to Ange’s long-term project, featuring 15 times and clinching a goal and an assist apiece.

Moore is a winger and Richarlison would have been selected centrally had he avoided midweek injury, but another setback merely pushes the need for a talisman into the teenager’s path.

Luckily, there are few rising stars even in Moore’s ballpark when it comes to natural quality, and he could bring the requisite energy and impetus to truly lay down his marker as Ange’s new main man, charged by the high technical skill and influence of Heung-min Son, who will take the centre-forward spot.

Tottenham face a different calibre of opponent in Villa, but Unai Emery’s high line and expectation of defeating the beleaguered Lilyewhites may actually play into their favour, with players such as Son sliding surgical passes through to the quick-burst movements of Moore.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Ange could even find that he has his answer to Marcus Rashford in the up-and-coming talent, with the Three Lions ace joining Villa from Manchester United on a loan deal until the end of the season last week.

Rashford may not ply his trade for the Red Devils any longer but he’s still one of the Premier League’s brightest academy stars of this generation, with Chris Smalling acknowledging that he looked a “special talent” from the offing.

Said to be the fifth most similar player to the new Villa signing in the Europa League this term, via FBref, Moore would like to think that he bears a similar moniker, and is in fact something of a teenage “superstar”, as commented by Fabrizio Romano, merely restricted by Ange’s current struggles.

One thing’s for certain, with so many Tottenham seniors sidelined and magic required to topple a drilled Villan backline, a silky and powerful winger such as Moore, 17 he may be, could be the difference-maker.

The Brazilian star has now scored seven goals and contributed four assists for Manuel Pellegrini's side in just 20 games so far in 2025. And Betis have been quick to point out how those numbers are better than those managed by Real Madrid superstar and Ballon d'Or winner Vinicius Jr since Antony arrived in Spain. Los Verdiblancos also claim "there's only clear Ballon d'Or contender in my books" and add a GOAT emoji for good measure.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Antony's latest effort was another outrageous effort that secured a last-gap win over Espanyol in La Liga. The winger spoke out after scoring the goal and said moving to Betis was the "the best decision" he has ever made. Real Betis are hoping to be able to keep hold of Antony but are unlikely to be able to meet Manchester United's €40m (£34m) asking price, although another loan could be a potential option that would suit all parties.

Pochettino was sacked in November 2019 after a disappointing start to the season that saw Spurs in 14th place. Since Pochettino’s departure, Tottenham have gone through four permanent managers, including Jose Mourinho, but none of them have matched the consistency and progress seen under the Argentine.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite a promising start, Ange Postecoglou now finds himself under immense pressure as Spurs continue to slide down the Premier League table. Currently sitting in 15th place, they risk finishing in their lowest league position in over a decade.

Meanwhile, Pochettino recently reflected on his time at Tottenham and didn’t rule out the possibility of a reunion.

He said: "Look, when I left the club I always remember one interview I said I would like one day to come back to Tottenham and that is of course. I am in the USA, I am not going to going to talk about that, but what I said then still after six years or five years, I still feel in my heart that, yes, I would like one day to come back. We see the timing, like Daniel said."

  • WHAT SHERINGHAM SAID

Sheringham voiced his disbelief over chairman Levy’s decision to end Pochettino’s five-year tenure, which culminated in a historic Champions League final appearance.

Speaking candidly in an interview with , Sheringham said, “I still don't know why they got rid of Mauricio Pochettino in the first place. I think he was the right fit for Tottenham."

Sheringham believes Spurs missed a vital opportunity to push forward following their Champions League final against Liverpool. Instead of strengthening the team, the club remained stagnant, and that, he says, was a fatal error. Quoting the wisdom of Sir Alex Ferguson, Sheringham added, "I think back to the time when they played in the Champions League final against Liverpool and then after that there was no movement in the transfer market to really enhance the club.

"Sir Alex Ferguson always said if you stand still with the players you’ve got – you're falling behind. So you always need to keep striving to be better. That wasn't the case with Tottenham at that particular moment. They just didn't look to go further. Whether that was Pochettino’s idea of not wanting to buy anyone or Daniel Levy's that he didn't want to spend any money on new players, who knows? But it's definitely a time when you need to enhance the squad, when you're doing well."

    WHAT NEXT FOR TOTTENHAM?

Despite leading the team to the semi-finals of the Europa League with a hard-fought victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, Postecoglou is under no illusions about his job security. “You’ll have to put up with me a bit longer,” he joked, but Spurs’ hierarchy is reportedly already planning for life after the Australian if European success doesn’t materialize. With the league campaign in tatters and their European dreams hanging by a thread, Postecoglou’s men face a stern test when they welcome high-flying Nottingham Forest to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Easter Monday.

Deal progressing: Man Utd now in talks to sign new £900k-p/y ace for Amorim

Manchester United are now progressing with a deal to sign a new defender for Ruben Amorim this month, it has been reported, with the club keen to improve their ranks for the second half of the campaign.

Manchester United lose again as INEOS turn to January market

A 3-1 Premier League loss to Brighton at Old Trafford was the sixth in just 11 games for Ruben Amorim since his arrival, and left the club 13th in the top flight, just ten points clear of the relegation zone.

While relegation seems overwhelmingly unlikely, the 11 point gap to the final European places for next season also seems to be growing with each week, and barring an impressive Europa League run it seems likely that the Red Devils will be without any European football for the 2025/26 campaign.

A mammoth overhaul is likely to take place in the summer, with Jonny Evans, Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof all out of contract while the likes of Casemiro, Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Tyrell Malacia have all been strongly linked with moves away from the club either this month or in the summer.

One player already on his way out is Brazilian winger Antony, who is set to bring his awful spell at Old Trafford to a close and seal a loan move to Spanish side Real Betis in the coming days, while more exits could well follow in the final days of the transfer window.

To combat that, the Red Devils are also looking at strengthening their own ranks, and are now moving forward with a deal for a versatile new defender for Amorim.

Manchester United open talks over Lecce star

Now, the reliable David Ornstein has revealed that the Red Devils are opening talks over a deal to sign exciting fullback talent Patrick Dorgu from Lecce this month.

An in demand talent, Dorgu has at various times in the last 12 months been linked with all of Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea, but it seems that United are trying to make a move a reality for the versatile Dane, who can play on either flank both as a full-back or winger.

"Sensational" £59m Man Utd star agrees personal terms to join new club

The Red Devils have received a huge transfer offer.

1 ByDominic Lund Jan 19, 2025

He was dubbed an “elite team player” with “immense physicality” by one analyst, and has demonstrated his versatility this campaign for the Serie A outfit, having spent much of it on the right wing despite primarily being a left-back.

As per Ornstein, “discussions have begun” and “nothing is yet agreed, but dialogue is progressing” over a deal to sign the defender this month, while Fabrizio Romano adds some good news that Dorgu is “100% keen on move” and that Lecce are holding out for €40m (£34m), a fee that is considered relatively cheap by comparison to the likes of Nuno Mendes, Rayan Ait Nouri and Milos Kerkez, who Manchester United have also considered.

Still just 20-years-old, Dorgu would certainly be a smart signing for the Red Devils given his physical prowess, while he is well-adjusted to playing in a back three/five having done so for both club and country to good effect.

Equally, his wages would not be too high, with Dorgu having signed a new deal on October but still only taking home £900,000 a year (£10.5k per week) as things stand. Even with a hefty bump to those terms, he would be among Manchester United’s lowest earners.

Should he prove a success, he could well be the long term answer to the clubs left back issues alongside Diego Leon, who is expected to arrive in the coming months.

PSG now make Newcastle star their priority target; £83m move possible

Paris Saint-Germain have now made a Newcastle United star their priority target for the summer, and an offer of £83m could be possible, according to a report.

Newcastle braced for departures

Newcastle have a real fight on their hands when it comes to trying to keep hold of a number of their star players, particularly considering the financial restrictions they are working under, which has significantly slowed down their progress.

Alexander Isak’s future at St James’ Park remains in major doubt, with Premier League rivals Arsenal believed to be keen, having now identified the Swede as their number-one striker target.

However, the Gunners are not the only option for Isak, with PSG willing to do everything they can to sign the forward, identifying him as an ideal signing for the Luis Enrique project.

Isak is not the French club’s main target, though, with reports from Spain now revealing that signing Bruno Guimaraes is their priority objective – and they are willing to make a huge offer to get a deal over the line.

The reigning Ligue 1 champions could make an offer of €100m (£83m) to secure the Brazilian’s services in what could prove to be one of the biggest signings of next summer.

As expected, Newcastle will not let Guimaraes leave easily, viewing him as fundamental to their plans to compete in the Premier League and Europe, though whether they could be tempted by a big offer is unclear.

Such is the 27-year-old’s ability, he has been lauded as “world-class” by ex-Magpies defender Jose Enrique, so it is no surprise that PSG have identified him as a major target for the summer transfer window.

Bruno Guimaraes celebrates for Newcastle

Eddie Howe has also agreed with the notion that Guimaraes is world-class, saying: “I think he is. I don’t say that lightly because it’s easy to say, but you have to believe what you’re saying. And I do.

“I think he has unbelievable qualities that we see on a daily basis. He is versatile, fundamentally he has an unbelievable attitude to life and football. He can produce moments of magic like he did against Nottingham Forest.”

The Newcastle star’s attacking talents have been on show for all to see over the past year, ranking in the 96th percentile for assists per 90 and the 97th percentile for successful take-ons when compared to his positional peers (as per FBref).

Since joining the club, the former Lyon man’s attacking output has improved each year:

The Magpies’ struggles to abide by the Premier League’s financial rules mean that cashing in on the Brazil international could be a huge help, but he would be extremely difficult to replace in central midfield.

As such, Newcastle should resist PSG’s approach unless Guimaraes unexpectedly pushes for an exit that forces them to cash in.

Kuhn 2.0: Celtic lining up move for star with "incredible potential"

Celtic have been in fantastic form so far this season and have an opportunity to win their first piece of silverware with a League Cup final clash at Hampden Park on Sunday.

The Hoops are set to face off against Glasgow rivals Rangers in the final and Brendan Rodgers will be hoping to lift the trophy for the first time since his return to the club last year.

His side were knocked out by Kilmarnock in August of 2023 and Philippe Clement went on to win the competition, beating Aberdeen in the final, as Rangers boss.

Rodgers now has a chance to put things right and secure the trophy this time around, and his team’s domestic form so far this season suggests that he has a good chance of doing so.

Celtic have won 14 and drawn one of their opening 15 matches in the Scottish Premiership, and have already beaten Rangers 3-0 at Parkhead in the division.

The Hoops have also only lost one of their six matches in the Champions League so far this season, which shows that they have been strong across all competitions.

Despite their fantastic form domestically and in Europe, Celtic are still, reportedly, active ahead of the January transfer window that is set to open for business next month.

Celtic interested in Ajax youngster

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, as relayed by Sport Witness, Celtic are one of a number of clubs lining up a swoop for Ajax central midfielder Benjamin Tahirovic ahead of the second half of the season, as Rodgers looks to bolster his options in the middle of the park.

The report claims that Greek giants PAOK and Serie A teams Fiorentina and Lazio are also keen on snapping up a deal for the 21-year-old talent next month, which shows that there is plenty of competition for his services.

It states that the former Roma gem turned down a move to English Championship team Coventry City in the summer transfer window, which frustrated Ajax and has led to restricted minutes this season so far.

The outlet adds that Tahirovic is now keen to move on from the Dutch giants and is looking to seal an exit from the Eredivise side when the January transfer window opens for business, although there is no mention of how much Ajax would demand in order to sell him.

However, it reveals that the Bosnia international, who recently changed agents, is hoping to secure a move back to Italy to play in the Serie A, which means that the Hoops will need to convince him to abandon that dream to come and play in Scotland.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Rodgers could repeat the masterclass he played with Nicolas Kuhn by beating the likes of PAOK, Lazio, and Fiorentina to his signature next month.

Celtic's Nicolas Kuhn masterclass

The Hoops swooped in to sign the German forward from Austrian side Rapid Vienna for a reported fee of £3m, shortly after his 24th birthday in January at the start of this year.

Kuhn had played for RB Leipzig, Ajax, and Bayern Munich at youth level before, as he put it, taking a step back in order to take two steps forward by moving to Austria.

The left-footed winger produced seven goals and ten assists in 51 matches in all competitions for Rapid Vienna, including two goals in 16 league outings during the first half of last season.

Kuhn was then snapped up by Celtic in January and was given time to settle into life in Glasgow, with just two goals and two assists in 14 matches during the second half of the Premiership campaign.

As you can see in the table above, the German ace has already produced three more goals and four more assists in one fewer appearance in the league this season, which shows how much he has thrived since having a few months to adapt to the league.

Rodgers bringing Kuhn in during the January window meant that he could have that settling in period and the forward is now thriving, with 11 goals and 11 assists in all competitions this term, as a result of that.

The manager could now find his next version of the ex-Bayern Munich youngster by bringing Tahirovic in to follow a similar path at Parkhead next year.

Why Celtic should sign Benjamin Tahirovic

At the age of 21, Celtic would be signing a young player with potential to improve and he could benefit from going through the same experience that Kuhn had, by playing a bit-part role in the second half of the season to adjust to the country and league.

Celtic winger Nicolas Kuhn.

That could, then, allow him to hit the ground running with a pre-season under his belt when the 2025/26 campaign rolls around, as he would already be used to the Premiership, Rodgers’ tactics, and his teammates.

During his time at Roma, Jose Mourinho claimed that the youngster had “incredible potential”. This speaks to the kind of talent he has as the Portuguese manager has worked with some great players, including the likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard, Cristiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso, and Eden Hazard, among many, many, others.

The 21-year-old gem has only played once in the Eredivisie this season but his form last term suggests that the quality is there for him to be a promising signing for Celtic.

As you can see in the table above, Tahirovic, who was 20 for most of the campaign, was a regular for Ajax in the Dutch top-flight and showcased his quality as a box-to-box midfielder.

He was reliable with the ball at his feet with a pass accuracy of 89%, which placed him within the top 4% of midfielders in the division, which suggests that the youngster is suited to playing in a dominant Celtic team, that requires midfielders to be comfortable in possession.

Tahirovic has the potential to combine fantastic passing with creativity and a presence defensively, which could make him a brilliant all-round midfielder if he can develop and gain consistency in his performances.

"Forget it" – Goldbridge fumes after Man Utd injury news on £250k-p/w star

Manchester United fan and social media presenter Mark Goldbridge has not taken well to the latest injury news coming out of Old Trafford, in what has emerged as the latest blow to Ruben Amorim.

Amorim's opening struggles at Old Trafford

After what appeared to be a promising start in charge of the club over the international break, Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Bournemouth left Manchester United 13th in the Premier League over Christmas, the first time in their history that they had spent the festive period in the bottom half of the table.

Since Amorim’s arrival, the Red Devils have won just twice in the Premier League (beating Everton and Manchester City), losing three times, though they have been more successful in the Europa League, picking up six points from six.

There are also off the pitch concerns, none more so than the future of top earner Marcus Rashford, who has been frozen out by Amorim and has publicly asked for a new challenge away from Old Trafford, which could lead to his January departure from the Theatre of Dreams.

One bright spark has been Amad Diallo, with the Ivorian forward stepping up into the first team and becoming a key figure either at wing-back or in attack for the Portuguese manager. But now, Amorim is set to be without another man he was hoping to count on.

Goldbridge left fuming after latest Man Utd injury

That comes as it has been revealed that midfield man Mason Mount is set to be sidelined until March with a serious hamstring injury. The former Chelsea man lasted just 12 minutes against Manchester City before having to be taken off, and was visibly upset with the situation.

Man Utd now "ready" to sign £42m star who has "very high" chance of leaving

This would be some coup…

ByBarney Lane Dec 24, 2024

Upon his arrival, Amorim singled out Mount as a potential key figure in the club’s revival, explaining: “Mason Mount. I have to tell you I love that kid. You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad, and this is the most important thing for me. He played in this system (before), so it’s perfect for him. I have two positions for Mason Mount, so he should be very happy!”

However, the latest update has confirmed he will miss “several weeks” through injury once more, with suggestions that he may not return until March.

This was clearly too much for United influencer Goldbridge, who took to X to vent his frustrations, simply saying “forget it” after relaying the news.

Mount still has almost four years left to run on his £250,000 a week deal at Old Trafford, but is yet to be able to string together a series of performances to justify either his hefty transfer fee or wages since his arrival from Chelsea. Now sidelined again, he could be left behind in the new regime.

Tottenham line up Ange replacement who Chelsea wanted to succeed Pochettino

Tottenham Hotspur have “lined up” a “sensational” manager as their top target if the club decide to sack under-fire boss Ange Postecoglou – and one who was a “leading candidate” to succeed Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea before Enzo Maresca got the job.

Ange Postecoglou under pressure amid inconsistent Tottenham form

This time last season, Postecoglou was a seriously popular figure in N17, collecting 26 points from his first 10 Premier League games as Spurs boss, breaking records in the process.

Postecoglou recorded the best start ever made by any new manager in the division’s history in 2023/24, racking up more points in his opening 10 games than legendary Premier League managers like Arsène Wenger and José Mourinho, but fans are now starting to turn on the Australian.

Spurs’ head coach was spotted confronting a group of supporters in the away end at Bournemouth as words were exchanged, before stewards eventually defused the situation and waved Postecoglou away.

“They’re disappointed and rightly so,” said Postecoglou on the confrontation.

Barring a sensational 4-0 win away at champions Man City, the Lilywhites have suffered recent defeats to Ipswich Town, Galatasaray and Bournemouth, all while failing to beat Roma in the Europa League and Fulham last weekend.

The results have been sub-par, and you could argue that Spurs have regressed since last season.

Postecoglou certainly hasn’t been helped by injuries to Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero – who form the defensive spine of the team – but their inconsistency was still present when all three were fit and available.

Postecoglou retains backing in the Tottenham boardroom according to reports last month, but if they continue on this downward trajectory, that probably won’t last much longer.

Tottenham line up Kieran McKenna as top target

According to Football Transfers, contingency plans are being put in place by chairman Daniel Levy and technical director Johan Lange if they do opt to hand Postecoglou his P45.

Indeed, it is believed Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna has admirers within the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following the Englishman’s back-to-back promotions at Portman Road and reputation as one of the country’s most promising young coaches.

Tottenham have lined up McKenna as their “top target” to potentially replace Postecoglou, coming after Chelsea were widely reported to be after the 38-year-old as a candidate to step into Pochettino’s shoes in the summer.

GiveMeSport’s Dean Jones backed reports at the time that McKenna was a “leading candidate” for the Chelsea job, owing to how highly rated he is in the game, with Liverpool legend John Barnes also calling him a “sensational” tactician.

Interestingly, McKenna was also briefly a youth player at Tottenham, and featured in their reserves before retiring (Transfermarkt).
