Hampshire's turnaround

Cricinfo looks back at some of the best county performances from August

Team of the month – Hampshire
There’s nothing like a crisis to inspire a team. First it happened with Middlesex, who called a special general meeting to discuss the team’s lack of success – then they went on a winning streak which cumulated in the Twenty20 Cup. Now it’s Hampshire’s turn. In the same month as it was announced that Paul Terry was leaving the club they have registered two Championship victories (and have remained unbeaten through August) to ease relegation concerns and put themselves in touch with the top. At times they have been down to the bare bones of a team, but have benefited from Dimitri Mascarenhas being overlooked by England and the superb form of Imran Tahir. Sean Ervine, too, has found a new lease of life. An outstanding Pro40 century against Middlesex (they are still in with a chance there as well) was followed by a crucial, match-winning 94 against Durham.Batsman of the month – Marcus Trescothick
Thanks to the release of his autobiography – one that should actually be worth reading – Marcus Trescothick is making plenty of headlines. He is revealing all about his struggles over the last few years that forced an early international retirement (and Kevin Pietersen won’t be able to change his mind) and England’s use of Murray Mints. Most importantly, though, he is happy again. Which is a triumph in itself. It is showing in his cricket as he has churned out runs galore after a slow start to the season. Bowlers have been put to the sword in Championship cricket, but the most destructive displays have come in the Pro40 – particularly his 183 against Gloucestershire (which still ended in defeat). It’s time to let him move on.Bowler of the month – Robbie Joseph
At the beginning of the season Robbie Joseph was probably playing for his county future. He was under pressure after failing to make the most of his talent, but over the last few weeks he has spearheaded Kent’s attack. It began with nine wickets at Chester-le-Street in a match that lasted little more than two days and the top score was 53. Then came the Friends Provident Final where his three scalps kept Kent in with a fighting chance. Finally his success helped complete a victory when he ran through Lancashire at Canterbury and to wrap up August he took six more against Yorkshire. His three in the second innings was almost enough to force an unlikely win.Innings of the month – Sean Ervine 94 not out
It wasn’t a thrilling one-day century by Trescothick, or Championship double ton by Mark Ramprakash, but Sean Ervine’s 94 against Durham – his best score of the season – was worth more than either of them. The game at May’s Bounty in Basingstoke had been dominated by the ball, with Hampshire all out for 96 in their first innings. Chasing 240 few gave Hampshire a chance, especially at 77 for 5. But Ervine has found some strong form and held the innings together. On the final morning he chipped away at the target while wickets fell at the other end. It was nailbiting stuff. The ninth wicket fell with 21 still needed, but Imran Tahir held firm as he and Ervine gave Hampshire the points.Bowling spell of the month – Mark Davies, 8 for 24
It’s been a strange old career for Mark Davies. When you look at his statistics, 220 wickets at 20.83, you wonder how he hasn’t been talked about as an England bowler. But, as is often the case, the numbers only tell half the story. He has suffered a horrendous run of injuries and illness including a lung infection and a stress fracture of the back. This season, though, he has been able to string matches together with impressive results, none more so than his eight-wicket haul at Basingstoke. Already in 2008 he’d demolished Lancashire back in May with 7 for 33 (albeit in another defeat) and was at it again on a bowler-friendly strip. An England Lions tour isn’t out of the question this winter.Youngster of the month – Liam Dawson
From having one of the most potent spin attacks in the country with Shane Warne and Shaun Udal, Hampshire were suddenly left with a bare cupboard after both departed over the winter. But during the second half of the season a talent has emerged in the shape of Liam Dawson, a left-arm spinner who is also turning himself into a fine batsman. It is, in fact, the runs that have often caught the eye, scored at vital times in one-day games, but he has put in some important spells with the ball, including 4 for 45 against Middlesex at Lord’s. He had a successful spell with England Under-19s, but now it’s the time to give him his head at first-class level. It’s vital, too, that he concentrates on his spin. The county game isn’t overflowing with young English talent in that department.

Centurions Williamson, Ravindra add unbeaten 219 as New Zealand dominate Day 1

Centuries from Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra at entirely different stages of their careers – and both of varying styles – made South Africa pay for the lack of experience and pace, and the chances they put down of both batters. The duo had put on 219 runs for the unbroken third wicket by the end of the first day to deflate a spirited South Africa line-up that had reduced the hosts to a tricky 39 for 2 in the first session.Williamson was the more patient and circumspect of the two as he put a scratchy start behind him, whereas Ravindra smoked a six on his 11th ball to get going for his best Test score as both batters picked up pace in the last session to just about touch the run rate of three an over.Ravindra and Williamson had to steer New Zealand out of troubled waters after debutant Tshepo Moreki started his Test career with a first-ball wicket by trapping Devon Conway lbw for 1 in the second over of the game. In his accurate first spell of 5-1-10-1, Moreki beat Williamson three times in 15 balls for just five runs.Dane Paterson also tested the batters with his seam movement with wobble seam, and he soon drew Tom Latham’s outside edge for 20. The jitters continued as Williamson was nearly run-out when Ravindra tapped his fifth ball towards cover point for a quick single, only for the throw to be wayward. Had Williamson been dismissed, the hosts would have been 44 for 3 then.Ravindra’s start was much more confident, as he welcomed Moreki back for a second spell with a six over the long-leg boundary. Moreki continued to impress nonetheless, and even drew Ravindra’s edge three balls later, but it fell well short of second slip. Ravindra enjoyed some more luck off Moreki on 23 when his inside edge just missed the stumps which made him a bit more watchful. The duo batted patiently through a wicketless second session of 27 overs for just 60 runs, with plenty of leaves and blocks because of the tight bowling from the four South Africa quicks. South Africa were fielding an all-pace bowling attack and six debutants in Mount Maunganui, including their captain Neil Brand. Since 1995, it was the first instance by a Test nation apart from Ireland and Afghanistan who had their captain on debut when the side wasn’t playing its first Test.1:54

Moreki: We knew it would be difficult against NZ

But the conditions started to get better for batting after the initial swing subsided and once the ball got older. Williamson opened up with imperious boundaries off Moreki in consecutive overs, and Ravindra soon caught up when he broke the shackles against Paterson with a cover drive and a mighty pull for a one-bounce four. While Williamson played the ball very late and used soft hands to ensure his edges weren’t carrying, Ravindra drove, scythed and pulled the loose deliveries with hard hands and a lot more punch. Williamson got a life on 45 just minutes before tea when he uncharacteristically slogged against Ruan de Swardt’s medium pace, but the leading edge was shelled by Edward Moore while running back from extra cover. And Williamson reached his fifty in the next over with a boundary, while Ravindra reached his own in the over after the break. Both scored a lot more freely with boundaries to tick at above four runs an over in the half hour after the tea break as Ravindra closed in on his partner. By then, Duanne Oliver’s pace had started to drop below 125kph, and South Africa’s captain Neil Brand came on to bowl left-arm spin but for no success.Soon after, Ravindra got a life on 80 when his top edge flew to deep backward square leg where Olivier ran in and dived forward, and got both hands to the ball, but couldn’t hold on. As South Africa started bowling shorter consistently before the second new ball was taken, Williamson pulled to reach his 30th Test century – off 241 balls – while Ravindra’s landmark moment came in the next over, off 189 deliveries.South Africa’s fortunes didn’t change even after the second new ball, which was slapped straightaway for a four by both batters. Ravindra continued to collect boundaries off Moreki, whether he pitched it full or short, to overtake Williamson and finish the day unbeaten on 118, ten ahead of the former captain.

Ex-England international Dele, who has struggled since bidding farewell to north London in 2022, finds himself in the free agent pool once again. He first hit that market after seeing his deal at Everton run down.

A fresh start was sought when heading to Italy, with Cesc Fabregas inviting the 29-year-old midfielder to join the ranks at Como. Another disastrous spell was endured there, which delivered just one substitute appearance – with that outing lasting less than 10 minutes after a red card was picked up against AC Milan.

Said appearance is the only one that Dele has made since February 2023. He is, however, seeing a return to British football mooted – potentially in the Championship, with Birmingham ruling themselves out of the running there.

Real Madrid legend Modric, who is now at AC Milan, could aid efforts to get a deal done as the Ballon d’Or winner is part of the ownership group at Swansea. He has vowed to use his experience to help “build an exciting future”.

Discussing Dele on , Ben Jacobs said: “I think Swansea City is going to be really interesting because Luka Modric is now part of that ownership group and from what I’m told he is having conversations with slightly older players and free agents to try and lure them over there.

“It wouldn’t at all surprise me from what I hear if Swansea City and Dele Alli becomes a thing over the next few weeks. Dele Alli won’t get an opportunity in my opinion in a big-five league after it didn’t work out at Como but maybe a Championship club on a short-term deal.”

Bell-Drummond's elegant 70 steers Kent to calmer waters

Daniel Bell-Drummond hit an elegant 70 as Kent reached 113 for 3 on day one of their Vitality County Championship with Surrey at Canterbury. The in-form Kent skipper put on a stand of exactly 100 for the third wicket with Jack Leaning, who was 30 not out at stumps, after rain wiped out all but 11 balls of the first two sessions at the Spitfire Ground.Dan Worrall took 2 for 33 to reduce Kent to 8 for 2 in the sixth over, but Surrey went 30 overs without a wicket before Tom Lawes broke the partnership when he had Bell-Drummond lbw shortly before the close. The Kent and England legend Derek Underwood, who passed away on Monday aged 78, was honoured before the start of play, with both sets of players standing in front of the Underwood & Knott stand for a minute’s silence. Black armbands were worn and a moment was also taken to remember Raman Subba Row of Surrey, who died on Wednesday at the age of 92.It was a bitterly cold day for the die-hards at the St. Lawrence and the weather wiped out 57 overs before conditions finally improved, or at least got less damp, late in the afternoon. The visitors, who had do without Jamie Overton due to a back injury, won the toss and chose to bowl, but the start had already been delayed until 1.25pm and they managed just 11 deliveries before bad light forced them off again, the wind at that point being too strong for the floodlights to be used. When play eventually resumed at 4.15pm, Surrey struck early. Zak Crawley’s first Kent appearance of the season saw him make just 5 before Worrall had him caught by Jamie Smith at third slip and in his next over he trapped Ben Compton lbw for three. The partnership Kent urgently needed came when Leaning joined Bell-Drummond and they batted the home side into calmer waters.Bell-Drummond, who already has two centuries this season, punched Worrall for four through cover to bring up his 50, but he fell in the third-last over of the day when he was trapped leg before by Lawes. Night-watcher George Garrett was unbeaten on one at stumps.

Sam Robson's 126* not enough as Middlesex and Northamptonshire finish level after final-over thriller

599 plays 599 as honours finish exactly even in Division One relegation clash

ECB Reporters Network13-Jul-2023

Sam Robson came within a run of guiding Middlesex to a remarkable chase at Merchant Taylors’ School•Getty Images

Northamptonshire 219 (Zaib 49, Higgins 2-33) and 380 (Whiteman 114, Gay 89) drew with Middlesex 277 (Higgins 64*, Stoneman 51, Keogh 3-52) and 322 for 6 (Robson 126*, Simpson 75) Sam Robson became Middlesex’s first centurion of the season – but it was not quite enough to seal a much-needed LV= Insurance County Championship victory in a breathtaking finish against Northamptonshire.Robson struck 126 not out, sharing a fourth-wicket stand of exactly 150 with John Simpson to boost the home side’s chances of chasing down 323 against their fellow Division One strugglers. Middlesex needed 10 from the final over, bowled by Tom Taylor – and three from the last ball – but Robson could only steer it to mid-on and scrambled back for two, meaning the scores finished level. The resulting draw did little to help either side’s prospects in the battle to avoid relegation, with Northamptonshire staying bottom of the table and Middlesex now 16 points above them in ninth.Northamptonshire’s players took to the field wearing black armbands as a mark of respect for county stalwart Tony Kingston, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 83, having served as their scorer for 32 years up to last season.Surprisingly, the visitors – who were 372 for seven overnight – opted to continue batting, but extended their innings by just 11 deliveries as the last three wickets tumbled for the addition of eight more runs. Tom Helm collected two in three deliveries to finish with three for 75, while Emilio Gay was last man out for 89, sent back attempting to snatch an ambitious single and failing to beat the throw to the bowler’s end.Middlesex gave notice of their intent by promoting white-ball specialist Stephen Eskinazi to open, but the move fell flat as a recurrence of the finger injury he sustained while fielding on the first day forced him to retire just two overs into the chase. With a number of deliveries keeping low, the batting side found it hard to gain traction and they were pegged back even further when Ben Sanderson’s consistent opening spell yielded wickets in successive balls.Mark Stoneman was first to depart, adjudged lbw to one that might have drifted down the leg side – but there could be no dispute about the next, which ripped out Pieter Malan’s off stump. Middlesex might have been three down soon afterwards when Max Holden drove a ball to square leg and non-striker Robson eventually aborted his bid for a single halfway down the pitch, but Sam Whiteman’s throw whistled just over the stumps.Holden began brightly after lunch, cutting Sanderson for two boundaries and looked nicely set, contributing 37 to a partnership of 63 with Robson until off-spinner Rob Keogh castled him with a ball that turned and clipped the bails. Keogh bowled tidily throughout an initial 11-over stint, although Simpson drove him off the back foot for four to raise the Seaxes’ total beyond three figures as he and Robson kept the scoreboard ticking along.Robson inched towards his second half-century of the season by steering Tom Taylor for three, but the required rate had already drifted above five an over by the time Middlesex reached tea at 147 for three. The first seven overs after the interval brought just a single boundary. The Seaxes were still struggling to accelerate when the partnership finally ended, with Luke Procter keeping his balance in front of the rope at long off to take the catch that removed Simpson for 75.Procter also dismissed Ryan Higgins, who miscued to midwicket, but Roland-Jones launched a feisty assault with 34 from just 18 deliveries, including three sixes, to steer his side within 40 of the target.Josh de Caires, with an unbeaten 17, did his best to help Robson haul them across the line, but Sanderson conceded only four from the penultimate over and that proved crucial as Northamptonshire did enough to deny their rivals victory.

"Decisive" Aston Villa ace an early doubt to face Cardiff after injury blow

Adding to their misery following a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Crystal Palace, an Aston Villa star is already an early injury doubt to face Cardiff City in the FA Cup this weekend.

Aston Villa injury news

The Villans finally made a strong statement in their comeback victory over Chelsea last weekend, which followed an impressive 2-2 draw against Liverpool. And as a trip to Selhurst Park awaited, it looked like an easy bet that Unai Emery’s side would add to their impressive form. But that turned out to be far from the case.

Once again, the Midlands club took one step forward only to take two steps back in the space of one week and one damaging defeat against Crystal Palace.

Now four points adrift of the Champions League places, Aston Villa must park their European ambitions and turn their attention towards Cardiff City and the last 16 of the FA Cup, where they’ll be hoping to avoid yet another unexpected result. To do that, however, they may have to secure victory without one key man.

As confirmed by Emery, Emiliano Martinez is now an early injury doubt to face Cardiff after coming off at half-time against Crystal Palace through an ill-timed blow.

Emery told reporters: “He was feeling yesterday a little bit of pain. He trained and today he felt good in the warm-up. In the first half he told us he was feeling some pain so we decided to change him. I don’t exactly (the injury). We have to test him.”

Emery must never select 4/10 Aston Villa duo together again after Palace

Aston Villa were thrased 4-1 away to Crystal Palace on Tuesday evening.

1 ByJoe Nuttall Feb 26, 2025

Likely left to turn towards Robin Olsen again this weekend, Aston Villa will hope that Martinez’s injury does not result in a lengthy absence with just 10 Premier League games remaining to secure Champions League qualification.

Aston Villa would miss "decisive" Martinez

A World Cup winner and the man who has been crowned Europe’s best goalkeeper for two consecutive seasons, there’s no doubt that Aston Villa would feel the full effect of Martinez’s absence should he miss a number of games.

The Argentina hero hasn’t always been at his very best at Villa Park this season, but remains the undisputed number one and arguably one of the best shot-stoppers in the Premier League.

Emery has always been well aware of Martinez’s talent too, praising his goalkeeper in last season’s penalty shoot-out victory against Lille in the Europa Conference League last eight.

The Spaniard told reporters: “He is being successful individually and with both Argentina and Villa. Having been successful with Argentina, he is progressively getting better with Villa. He is decisive in a lot of matches and of course, he is one of the best goalkeepers. The first, second, third? For me he is the best.”

With the chance to bounce back from defeat against Cardiff, Villa won’t have time to worry about Martinez’s injury. Instead, they must put on an emphatic and convincing display against Championship opposition in the FA Cup.
