Pomersbach suspended after drink-driving

Western Australia batsman Luke Pomersbach has been suspended from all pre-season training after he was charged with assault and drink-driving. Pomersbach was allegedly driving a car that was involved in a hit-and-run accident in the western Perth suburb of City Beach late on Sunday night.”The Western Australian Cricket Association has been made aware of a serious traffic incident involving Warriors batsman Luke Pomersbach last night in Perth’s western suburbs,” Western Australia’s chief executive officer Graeme Wood said. “The matter will be heard in the Perth Magistrates Court on Friday. Until then, Luke has been suspended from all pre-season training commitments with the Warriors.”No other Warriors player was involved in this incident. The WACA, along with the Australian Cricketers Association, will continue to provide the necessary support and welfare to Luke.”Pomersbach, 24, was charged with assaulting police while allegedly trying to escape custody after a traffic accident. Police claim that Pomersbach was driving under intoxication and crashed his car into the back of another.”He was spoken to by police and as he was being placed in the rear of a police sedan, he informed police that he did not want to accompany them and tried to leave,” police spokesman Greg Lambert said. “A struggle developed when police tried to restrain the man, during which a police officer was pushed backward into a window of the house, causing it to break. The man eventually managed to break free and ran away from the scene.”This is not the first time Pomersbach has been involved in off-field mishaps. In late 2007 he was suspended by his state after an alcohol-related incident. Earlier this year Pomersbach was suspended and fined a full Twenty20 match payment after he failed to show up for a club game.Pomersbach received a shock last-minute call-up to make his Twenty20 international debut for Australia in 2007 and went on to win the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year title in 2008. He has scored 1,570 runs at an average of 43.61 in 22 first-class matches for Western Australia.

Haddin out of ODIs, doubt for Champions Trophy

Brad Haddin is in serious doubt for Australia’s Champions Trophy campaign after being ordered to undergo surgery on his broken finger

Cricinfo staff26-Aug-2009Brad Haddin has been advised surgery on his broken finger, which has ruled him out of Australia’s limited-overs series against Scotland and England and makes him a serious doubt for the Champions Trophy. Haddin was sent home from England after scans revealed significant damage to the left ring finger broken on the morning of the Edgbaston Test.Haddin visited a specialist upon his return to Sydney, and will undergo surgery on Thursday. “It’s been decided that the fracture of the ring finger of the left hand, sustained in the Test series in England, will be best dealt with by Brad having surgery,” said Trefor James, the Australian team doctor. “Brad will undergo corrective surgery in Sydney tomorrow.”He will therefore not be available for the limited over internationals in England. His fitness for the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa and the ODI series in India in October and November will be reviewed at a later date.”

Lots of Everton fans have been left buzzing over recent comments which emerged from Demarai Gray.

Speaking to the media after the Toffees managed to draw 1-1 at Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday, his comments since being shared by the Merseyside club on their official Twitter channel, the 25-year-old has said: “I have a manager here and a team that believes in me and give me the freedom to express myself.”

The winger was pivotal in the equaliser for Andros Townsend as he raced down the flank on the counterattack, and in general he is finding life very enjoyable under Rafa Benitez.

Gray has scored three goals and supplied one assist in seven Premier League games so far this term (£1.8m to Bayer Leverkusen to sign him in July.

Newcastle manager news on Howe

Eddie Howe is reportedly in ‘shock’ talks with Newcastle United over potentially replacing Steve Bruce as their next manager.

The Lowdown: Bruce leaves

As was expected, Bruce has now left his role as manager at St. James’ Park, as confirmed by the North East club on Wednesday.

Graeme Jones will now take temporary charge of the side, with their next game away to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The Latest: Howe discussions

As per The Daily Mirror, Howe is currently in discussions with the Tyneside outfit about the manager job, something which they describe as a ‘shock name’ to emerge amongst the candidates.

Still out of work after leaving AFC Bournemouth, he was strongly linked with Celtic during the summer, but eventually rejected a move to Glasgow.

The Verdict: Short-term yes, long-term no

Howe could be the perfect manager to come in in the short-term, perhaps until the end of the season, as the Magpies are still in a relegation battle.

Of course, he has faced these situations before with the Cherries, and survived five seasons in the Premier League after coming all the way up from League Two (Transfermarkt).

The great Sir Alex Ferguson loves him, gushing over his abilities, and one of his former players, Marvin Bartley, has previously dubbed him a ‘fantastic’ coach, so there are certainly positive signs there.

However, the new owners will want to go for a bigger name for the long-term in order to attract the biggest and best names to the Toon, with the likes of Diego Simeone recently being linked.

Sri Lankan cricketers injured in terror attack

Pakistan’s status as an international sporting venue has come under doubt after masked terrorists attacked the team bus carrying Sri Lanka’s cricketers to the Gaddafi stadium in Lahore on Tuesday morning. Five cricketers, including Mahela Jayawardene, the captain, and Kumar Sangakkara, his deputy, received minor injuries. Ajantha Mendis, Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paravitarana were also injured in the attack which killed six security men and two civilians. The Lahore Test was quickly called off and the tour cancelled, with the Sri Lankan players evacuated from the Gaddafi stadium and taken to a nearby airbase. The squad, including Samaraweera and Paranavitana, whose injuries were more serious, flew out in a chartered plane around 10pm Tuesday and landed in Colombo early on Wednesday. Samaraweera and Paranavithana went by ambulance to a private hospital in the city, a senior official said. There have been terror strikes on the sidelines of cricket, but this is the first time players have been directly targeted. The attack is the first major strike against an international sporting team since Palestinian terrorists killed 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics. In its first official reaction, the PCB said the attack was “beyond the control of the management”. Opposition MPs said in the Pakistan government officials received specific warnings from local police that terrorists were aiming to ambush the Sri Lankan squad. The paper reported a letter dated January 22 that said an attack was planned on the team, either at their hotel or between the hotel and the sports stadium. However, a change of government in the Punjab province meant a meeting about the threat was not followed up.”Intelligence reports said there might be an attack on the cricket team,” Pervez Rashid, a senior member of the sacked Punjab government, said. “They made no appropriate security arrangements.”

Security concerns in Pakistan
  • September 2001- New Zealand decide not to tour Pakistan following the September 11 attacks. West Indies and Australia then decide to move their games in Pakistan scheduled for later in the year to neutral venues in Colombo and Sharjah.
  • May 2002 – New Zealand cancel their tour of Pakistan after a bomb blast outside Karachi’s Sheraton Hotel where they were staying.
  • March 2008 – Australia postpone their tour of Pakistan slated for the end of March as a result of security concerns. The decision was taken in the aftermath of Benazir Bhutto’s assasination in December 2007.
  • August 2008 – Citing security concerns, five out of eight member nations of the ICC choose not to send their teams to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy scheduled for September the same year. As a result, the tournament is postponed until October 2009.
  • October 2008 – West Indies call off a proposed tour of Pakistan scheduled for November citing security concerns, a week after the West Indies Women had cancelled the Pakistan leg of their Asian tour.
  • December 2008 – The BCCI call off India’s scheduled tour of Pakistan in 2009 following a directive from the government.
  • December 2008 – The PCB confirm that Sri Lanka will tour Pakistan after India decided not to after the Mumbai terror attack.
  • February 2009 – The ICC decide not to stage the 2009 Champions Trophy in Pakistan after some of the members expressed reservations about touring the country.

The PCB’s statement is unlikely to cut much ice with other cricket bodies. David Morgan, the president of the ICC, described Pakistan as “a very dangerous place” at present. Speaking about the World Cup, he said: “Things will have to change dramatically in Pakistan in my opinion if any of the games are to be staged there. I think that international cricket in Pakistan is out of the question until there is a very significant change, a regime change I guess.”The Sri Lanka cricketers were on their way to the Gaddafi stadium when their bus was attacked by 12 armed terrorists near Liberty market, Habibur Rehman, chief commissioner of police, said. A grenade was also thrown at the bus but it missed.”The bus came under attack as we were driving to the stadium, the gunmen targeted the wheels of the bus first and then the bus,” Mahela Jayawardene said. “We all dived to the floor to take cover. About five players have been injured and also Paul Farbrace [a member of the support staff]…”Describing the injuries, Sangakkara said: “Thilan [Samaraweera] has a shrapnel wound in his leg, but he is fine. [Tharanga] Paranavitana had shrapnel in his chest, but thank God it wasn’t very deep and just on the surface.”I had shrapnel injuries in my shoulder, but they have all been removed and I’m okay now. Ajantha [Mendis] had shrapnel in his neck and scalp, but he too has had medical attention and is fine. Everyone else is perfectly all right.”The reserve umpire Ahsan Raza was also injured in the attack. Nadeem Ghauri, the TV umpire, who was travelling in a bus behind the Sri Lanka team coach said the firing continued for some time. Umpire Steve Davis, who was on the team bus, called the terrorist attack “terrible”. “I’m lost for words,” he said.Speaking on Geo TV, Inzamam-ul-Haq, the former Pakistan captain, said: “This is the first time that a cricket team has been seriously targeted… Pakistan’s image will be hit and only time will tell how much damage has been done to Pakistan cricket. The World Cup too might be affected… no country would want to come now to Pakistan… I am worried where Pakistan will get a chance to play, not only in Pakistan but outside as well. This is all so sad.”In Napier, the New Zealand and Indian teams donned black arm bands midway through their one-day cricket match as a mark of respect for the Sri Lankan cricketers. The Indian cricket board, which had called off a scheduled tour of Pakistan last December, expressed its sorrow over the attack. “We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured cricketers, and sympathise with their families and compatriots,” BCCI Secretary N Srinivasan said in New Delhi.Intikhab Alam, the Pakistan coach, said his team escaped the attack because “the Sri Lankan team left [the hotel] five minutes before us”.The Sri Lankan team only stepped in after the Indian government had barred the Indian team from touring Pakistan after the terror attack in Mumbai.

Phil Hay provides Leeds injury update

Phil Hay has shed light on the injuries to Leeds United pair Diego Llorente and Adam Forshaw following the defeat to Liverpool at the weekend.

The Lowdown: Whites beaten by Liverpool

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are still without a win in their opening four Premier League games after they were beaten 3-0 by the Reds at Elland Road on Sunday. The Whites were comprehensively outplayed and Pascal Struijk’s red card made little difference to the eventual scoreline.

Llorente started the game but was replaced in the first half after picking up an injury, while Forshaw wasn’t part of the matchday squad.

The Latest: Hay provides update on Llorente and Forshaw

Taking to Twitter on Monday morning, The Athletic journalist Hay said: “Diego Llorente went off with a muscular problem yesterday. Still being assessed. Adam Forshaw had a calf strain so wasn’t in the squad.”

The Spanish defender could now be set for a stint on the sidelines as medical staff review his condition, while the 29-year-old midfielder has only recently returned from a long-term injury absence.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-15/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Frustration for pair

Llorente’s first season at Leeds was injury-plagued and the hope was that this time around it would be different, but that doesn’t look like being the case following his latest setback at the weekend.

The Spaniard can’t seem to string together a prolonged spell in the team and he is becoming increasingly difficult to rely upon, with this being the third time in his last 17 matches that he has gone off injured.

Forshaw may find it tough to recover from an injury which has kept him out for the best part of two years, sadly, and his availability should be judged more as a bonus than anything considering what he has been through fitness-wise.

In other news, Leeds are reportedly still keen on signing one player. Find out who it is here.

'I am worried about the batting' – Siddons

Jamie Siddons, the Bangladesh coach, has singled out his team’s batting as the main worry ahead of the three-ODI series against Zimbabwe beginning in Mirpur on January 19

Jamie Siddons, the Bangladesh coach, has singled out his team’s batting as the main worry ahead of the three-ODI series against Zimbabwe, beginning in Mirpur on January 19. Bangladesh were bowled out for 152 in the tri-series final against Sri Lanka, and fell short chasing 205 in the first game against Zimbabwe. Their top-three batsmen managed only 46 runs between them in three games.”We are not playing reckless shots any more and we are not losing wickets to bad shots. It is just that the boys are unable to find a way to score when the pressure is on them”, Siddons said on the eve of the first ODI. “In the first game [against Zimbabwe] their spinners bowled in the right spots and our batsmen should have been smart enough to know how to score four runs an over under pressure. So that was a big learning curve. I am worried about our batting.”The opening partnership between Tamim Iqbal and Junaid Siddique failed to reach double figures in all three ODIs and Mushfiqur Rahim’s promotion to No.3, after a good performance in the Tests, was a failure. Siddons said Ashraful might replace Mushfiqur at that position.”The two guys at the top Tamim and Imroze [Junaid Siddique] haven’t made runs for a while now and haven’t put up a big score,” Siddons said. “I can see how well they are practising and they are the two best guys for the job. No one has really put a hand up to take their spot. They are two talented youngsters who are going to do well in the future. We just got to persevere with them and if Ash [Mohammad Ashraful] starts to step up then the top four would look a lot better.”Zimbabwe’s 38-run win upset Siddons but he felt his team was still adapting to the ODI format after a two-Test series against Sri Lanka. “We were really confident against Zimbabwe but the first game was a slip up. We were not ready for the tempo and momentum of one-day cricket. It is a faster pace and we needed to score quicker but our guys were in the mood of letting balls go.”We picked ourselves up pretty fast and I didn’t think we’d get the bonus point but we got that and in the final it was amazing. Everyone thought we had it and we did not do too much wrong but Murali took it from us.”Mohammad Ashraful, the Bangladesh captain, expected the top-order to come good and said he was looking forward to batting at No.3. “Here I would like to see a hundred in each match from one of the top-order batsmen and hopefully I will make runs too if I get going. The reason I had opted to bat at No 4 was because I thought it was better for me if the ball was a bit older. But for the team combination I will bat at No 3 and I hope to make use of that opportunity.”

talkSPORT drop major Arsenal transfer update

Arsenal have now dropped their pursuit of Aaron Ramsdale…

What’s the word?

That’s according to talkSPORT, who dropped a major update to supporters on Twitter.

The North London outfit had previously been mooted with a whopping £24m move for the Englishman, who was part of Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad this summer.

As per football.london’s Chris Wheatley, the Gunners had held ‘advanced talks’ with Sheffield United over the 23-year-old shot-stopper. However, they now seem to have walked away from any potential deal.

“Breaking: Arsenal have pulled out of the race to sign Aaron Ramsdale.

“The Gunners have moved on to other targets after failing to agree a fee with Sheffield United for the goalkeeper – talkSPORT understands.”

Correct decision

This latest development should leave many Arsenal fans absolutely delighted as it means the club are no longer going to splash out on a backup goalkeeper.

Despite Ramsdale’s obvious potential, the two relegations on his CV at such a young age is certainly cause for concern and to spend more than the £20m they made on Emiliano Martinez for another second choice did seem a little absurd.

Some of the alternative options out there are available for a much cheaper price, too, including West Brom’s Sam Johnstone (£12m) and Ajax’s Andre Onana (£4m).

Furthermore, plenty of the Emirates Stadium faithful were completely against the idea of signing Ramsdale. Some of the best reactions were relayed by football.london earlier this week.

“A waste of money,” claimed one fan, with another deeming it “one of the worst transfers” he’d seen in a long time, whilst a further member of the Gunners fanbase believed the club were “completely panicking” heading into the final few weeks of the window.

Whilst it was just a small sample of fans, it did explain the general mood across North London over this potential deal.

Now that it appears to be off, they can feel a little relieved and perhaps quite excited as funds in excess of £24m could well be spent elsewhere in the squad, such as finding that new no.10 or securing another striker.

AND in other news, Arsenal “in talks” to sign £27m-rated “rare talent”, Edu could find their next Vieira…
