Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta must unleash Folarin Balogun after Dundalk masterclass

As soon as he came on, you just knew Folarin Balogun was going to make his mark.

The 19-year-old once again stepped on to the pitch for Arsenal as a second-half substitute, this time replacing Eddie Nketiah in the Gunners’ Europa League clash against Dundalk.

The teenager made his presence felt from the off, showing incredible touch and strength to link up the play, and he got himself an assist when he saw Joe Willock fire home from his set-up.

And then came the moment that Arsenal fans probably knew was coming, coming in off the left flank and bending one into the bottom corner from Nicolas Pepe’s pass.

With Balogun’s contract coming to an end next summer, there is of course a big concern about what the future holds for him, but Mikel Arteta moved to play down those fears.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Arteta said: “Well, we’re having some discussions with the player he knows we want to retain him at the club. We know that the length of his contract at the moment is an issue, but we’re trying to resolve it in the best possible way. We want him to stay he said to me he wants to stay at the club, so hopefully we can reach an agreement and extend his contract.”

But the only way Arteta can truly convince Balogun that his long-term future still lies at Arsenal, is by playing him in the more meaningful games.

It’s all well and good playing him in the Europa League when Arsenal are playing against far inferior opponents and have cake-walked their group. It’s another to give him significant minutes in the competitions that matter the most, like the Premier League.

And it seemed like a lot of Arsenal fans agreed on just how talented Balogun really is.

With Gabriel Martinelli still slowly working his way back to fitness after considerable time away through injury, Balogun surely deserves the chance to play in the Premier League.

Theo Walcott’s Everton career may already be over with Southampton loan

Theo Walcott may have played his final Everton game already, having hinted at a move into coaching during his spell on loan with boyhood club Southampton.

The attacker returned to St. Mary’s on Deadline Day after the Saints struck a deal with Everton that sees the Goodison Park natives continue to pay £45,000 of the 31-year-old’s £100,000-per-week contract.

His terms are set to expire at the end of the season, though, and it is unlikely that a new deal is tabled having fallen down the pecking order under Carlo Ancelotti, with just 950 minutes of action handed to the former Arsenal star since the Italian’s appointment.

Walcott is yet to fully establish himself in the first-team fold at Southampton following his return to the south coast, with Ralph Hasenhuttl starting the attacker against Chelsea and seeing him assist in the 3-3 draw only to then be without the ex-England ace in victory over Everton.

But Walcott has revealed that he has been working closely with Hasenhuttl off the pitch since his homecoming, and could continue working with the Saints boss beyond his one-season loan.

“The manager has pulled me to one side a few times and put me in a room to go through a lot of tactics, which is nice to see, just to get my coaching head on, because that’s something in the future I might want to look at,” Walcott told the Saints’ website.

“It’s very interesting. I’m really enjoying my short time working with the manager at the moment and hopefully it can be a long-term thing.”

Along with working with Hasenhuttl, Walcott has been working with Southampton’s young talents and, given his comments, could look to move into a coaching position at the end of the season.

“I want to help the academy graduates coming through now,” Walcott added. “I’m sure they’ve got a lot of questions to ask – quite a few of them have already been asking me things.

“A lot of them have been saying, ‘I watched you at Arsenal and now I’m playing with you’, so that’s a nice touch. I feel like everyone’s a really hard worker.”

Should Walcott not be offered a new contract for next season and leaves Everton, his record at Goodison Park will not be as fruitful as he would have liked when signed for more than £20million by Sam Allardyce in 2018, having scored just 11 times and offered nine assists in 85 games.

He is clearly now looking at the bigger picture, though, and the forward maestro would be a superb addition for Southampton in a player-coach type role given his 47-caps for England, experience competing in the Champions League and 348 career Premier League appearances.

Walcott also has a superb footballing brain, and was hailed by Arsene Wenger during their time at the Emirates Stadium with the former Arsenal boss once noting via Sky Sports: “He has all the ingredients to be a great striker, because of the quality of his runs. He is an intelligent player, a good finisher.”

AND in other news, Marcel Brands can repeat his summer masterclass by landing an Everton-linked £76k-p/w powerhouse.

Arsenal can solve their Mesut Ozil problem with Emile Smith Rowe

After yet another drab display in the Premier League saw Arsenal slip to an almost typical 1-0 defeat to Leicester City on Sunday night, there is still one lingering question that threatens to completely derail the Gunners.

Just how do they solve their creativity issue? As per WhoScored, their total of 8.8 shots per game is the fourth-worst record in the entire division – even Burnley are above them – and with Mesut Ozil not even being named in their 25-man squad, it’s something that Mikel Arteta is already having to face questions about.

Club legend Martin Keown even claimed that the Spaniard is making the same mistakes that Unai Emery did. Quite the turnaround from a couple of months ago when Arteta was on top of the world after clinching both the FA Cup and Community Shield.

But whilst the club may have missed out on a potential solution to their creativity problem in Lyon’s Houssem Aouar in the summer transfer window, they do have another player in their ranks who could hold the key: Emile Smith Rowe.

The academy product spent time on loan at Championship side Huddersfield last season, and the 20-year-old left a huge impression there, with Terriers boss Danny Cowley saying: “Emile is just a really lovely player, isn’t he? He has that ability to find space; he could find space in a telephone box; he speeds the play up for you and draws and commits and I think it would have been a brilliant performance if he had scored.

“I am always going to be demanding of him because, to me, he is a Premier League player so I have to treat him like that and demand Premier League standards from him – in training and in games, day in and day out.”

With the Gunners not really having another player in their ranks who looks capable of playing in between the lines and operating as a number ten – Ozil not included – Arteta could do a lot worse than unleashing Smith Rowe sometime soon.

The north Londoners have already seen a fellow academy product in Bukayo Saka flourish after being given a chance. Now is the time to do the same for Smith Rowe too.

Spurs transfer target Robin Quaison is shades of Eden Hazard

Tottenham Hotspur appear to be ramping up their pursuit for a back-up to leading talisman Harry Kane and they may have just stumbled on a player who’s shades of Eden Hazard…

What’s the word?

According to Sport Bild, via Inside Futbol, Spurs are eyeing a swoop for versatile Mainz striker Robin Quaison but the Bundesliga outfit do not want to lose the 26-year-old despite him entering the final year of his contract.

It’s claimed that the forward would like to move on to advance his career onto the next stage, but the German club could keep him for the season and let him go on a free next summer.

Quaison is valued at £9.45m by Transfermarkt, though it remains to be seen what sort of fee could tempt Mainz into a sale.

Eden Hazard vibes

Whilst the Swedish international can become a valuable second-string to Kane, he’s also an intriguing prospect to play out wide, particularly on the left flank.

This surely opens up many doors for Jose Mourinho to consider and only emphasises why a move must happen. Quaison bagged 13 goals from 32 appearances in the Bundesliga this term, averaging 2.2 shots, 1.4 dribbles and 0.9 key passes per game, via WhoScored.

Clearly he likes to get at his opponent, beat them and then coolly slot home and this is backed up by his comparisons to former Gunners graduate Serge Gnabry.

Bundesliga.com claim his style is akin to the Bayern sensation, due to his stocky frame, pace, dribbling and versatility. This is even more interesting as the German winger has modelled his game on Eden Hazard, who enjoyed great success under Mourinho during his second spell at Stamford Bridge.

Mainz’s former head coach Sandro Schwarz believes he’s an “intelligent” player whilst sporting director Rouven Schroder claims he has “a lot of potential” and that he “scores regularly”.

On that basis, it seems like a no-brainer for Daniel Levy, especially as he could be available at a cut-price due to his contractual situation.

Man City news: Citizens lining up shock £40m transfer for Spurs star

It still feels like Jose Mourinho is trying to mould the Tottenham Hotspur squad to his liking but in order to do that and buy the necessary personnel, Spurs will first have to sell some of their players. According to an exclusive report from The Sun, Manchester City are lining up a shock transfer bid for Harry Winks with the Special One actually considering to let it happen.

The 24-year-old has signed a fresh five-year contract with the club just last summer but that was also when Mauricio Pochettino was still at the helm and his future looked to be at Spurs. Now, however, he seems largely unsettled under Mourinho.

This is also reinforced by the arrival of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg which could limit his first-team chances even more so than usual. The same source claims Pep Guardiola is a fan of the player and is lining up a £40m bid to lure him to the former Premier League champions.

Of course, Spurs never like to sell their players to one of their main rivals but Mourinho needs the funds so he can reinvest it into the squad immediately. Winks is a valued asset but if Manchester City can match what they’re asking for, it is not inconceivable that he indeed leaves the club in the immediate future.

It is worth noting that he has been a regular presence in the lineup so this would come as a bit of a shock but the same paper claims he is unsettled and the Portuguese manager is considering this deal.

Verdict

It remains to be seen what exactly will Hojbjerg bring to the team but losing Winks does seem like a big blow to Spurs. Of course, if Mourinho thinks he is replaceable then that’s a different story.

Predicting his plans can be an unforgiving task but it does seem like he has a plan for the ongoing summer transfer window in place.

The fans will have to trust the process.

Celtic: Fans love video of great away atmosphere

A lot of Celtic fans are reminiscing after celticbible posted a video of Hoops fans at Ibrox generating a great atmosphere, one that is much louder than the home support.

The video is from a past trip to their Old Firm rivals, and clearly has hit a place in fans hearts as they flooded the post to tweet about the day.

The bitter rivalry between Celtic and Rangers has had to be put on hold currently, as football is postponed due to recent events, however the Bhoys were looking to have one over on Steven Gerrard’s side this campaign as they sat 13 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership, via BBC Sport and were on course to win their ninth league title in a row, via Transfermarkt.

Back in 2017 the Celts fans were named the best in world football at the Best FIFA Football awards, via the Scotsman, and the video recently posted emphasised why their support is rated of the best in Europe.

The club will hope that they can return to what they do best, and the fans will be itching to get behind the players whilst they continue their dominance at the top.
