In it for the money? Metgod’s Nottingham Forest exit provokes mixed fan response

[ad_pod ]

Nottingham Forest cult hero John Metgod has left the club, but not for the first time.

During his playing career, the Dutchman enjoyed a three-year spell with the Reds in the 1980s before leaving to join Spurs. However, after becoming a part of the board of directors at the club in 2017, he has now gone again.

He’ll be moving to the Far East where he’ll join the U.A.E as the assistant manager of their national team.

In response, Forest fans have shared a mixed reaction. Some left GIFs which suggest he’s only left because of the money, but there were some more positive tweets sent in the direction of their former player as well.

One supporter claimed they were still in awe of his free-kicks whilst another said they were his first ever favourite player.

Metgod had a successful playing career, especially in his native Netherlands where he won major honours with AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord.

Newcastle fans react to Andy Carroll’s latest setback

[ad_pod ]

Andy Carroll may well have played his last game for West Ham United.

Out of contract this summer, Carroll has picked up another ankle injury.

The 30-year-old bounced back from ankle surgery to make his return in the latter stages of 2018, but has not played in West Ham’s last two Premier League matches.

Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini confirmed on Thursday that the centre-forward had picked up another issue, but refused to put a timescale on it.

West Ham can trigger an extension to Carroll’s contract if they wish, but it seems likely that he will leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The news has been discussed by the Newcastle United fans on social media, with some insisting that they would not take the nine-time England international back.

Carroll scored 33 times in 90 appearances during his time at Newcastle, but is now seemingly battling to save his career in the top flight.

The Chalkboard: Dominic Solanke must be played at No.10 in David Brooks’ absence

[ad_pod ]

With David Brooks set to miss the next four weeks having suffered an injury against Chelsea, Eddie Howe must make the most of the attacking talent at his disposal to cover for the influential Welshman.

In the 2-0 loss to Cardiff, new £19m signing Dominic Solanke started up front with Josh King just behind, but struggled to make an impact throughout as he dropped too deep and appeared to try a little too hard to get involved.

Where should he be used?

The 21-year-old is a far better footballer than people give him credit for, and is surprisingly good in a No.10 position behind the striker.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

Against the Bluebirds, however, he was deployed as a central striker in front of King with the intention of him being a like-for-like replacement for Callum Wilson, but the system didn’t work as the two are vastly different players.

Upon Wilson’s return, and in Brooks’ absence, the England international should be used by Howe as a No.10, where he can drop deep and look to make things happen.

Perfect skill set for the role

You would think that Solanke is the perfect build to be a centre forward, but he is arguably more suited to a central attacking midfielder role. He completed four dribbles against Neil Warnock’s men and provided one key pass, but failed to have a single shot – this, if anything, suggests he is more focused on creating than actually scoring.

The former Chelsea and Liverpool forward is a physically capable at 6 foot 1, combining strength with impressive dribbling skills to great effect, but he has never really seemed intent on throwing his weight around in the penalty area in order to score a scrappy goal or stretching opposition defences by running off the shoulder of the last man.

Howe must ensure that he doesn’t place pressure on Solanke to be a player that he isn’t.

Man Utd fans hail Hannibal Mejbri’s display in the FA Youth Cup against Leeds

The FA Youth Cup gives clubs like Manchester United the perfect chance for their youngsters to experience a real cut-throat, knock-out tournament environment.

And in front of a watching Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Wednesday night, the Red Devils overcame rivals Leeds United 1-0 at Old Trafford, to reach the sixth round of the competition.

Watch Manchester United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Whilst it was a header from Dillon Hoogewerf that proved to be the decisive, match-winning strike, many fans of the Manchester side took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on one starlet in particular: Hannibal Mejbri.

One supporter in particular suggested Mejbri could be the long-term successor to Paul Pogba, with the France World Cup winner reportedly telling teammates he still wants to leave the club.

Another fan meanwhile, even insisted that Mejbri is ready for the first-team already, despite him only turning 17 last month.

Whilst Solskjaer, just like these United fans, may have left Old Trafford feeling particularly excited about the kind of talent coming through the academy, he knows there should still be a huge sense of caution over their futures.

The Red Devils have had an inconsistent season at first-team level, with wins over the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea, being punctured by defeats to the likes of Burnley and Crystal Palace. If they can get back to their best form as soon as possible, then players like Mejbri will have an easier path to shine.

Quickfire Questions: Can you get 100% on this Man United prodigies quiz?

They will not have to feel the burdensome pressure of having to perform almost immediately with results on the line. Instead, they can simply relax and play their own games, just like they are doing at youth level.

Meanwhile, Man Utd fans are buzzing with interest in this Premier League ace who has seven assists.

Could Liverpool shock us all and bring back former midfielder to seal Premier League title?

Liverpool remain on course to land their first Premier League title after sealing a 4-3 win over Crystal Palace this weekend in a dramatic tie at Anfield.

The Reds saw off a firm challenge from the Eagles to snatch what could prove to be a massive three points in the title race, and the fans at Anfield will be getting genuinely excited that this is the year for their club.

However, a lack of January transfer window action will be of a concern to some Liverpool fans, especially with Champions League football just around the corner again, meaning injuries and suspensions could well mount up in the winter months.

That’s why we here at the Tavern think adding one or two players of massive quality would be a wise move for the club, and we think it’s not entirely unfeasible for the Reds to go out and make a move to re-sign former midfielder Philippe Coutinho.

The Brazilian has not shone at Barcelona like many thought he would do, and he seems to be overshadowed by the consistent brilliance of the likes of Leo Messi and Luis Suarez.

Coutinho would be welcomed back to Anfield with open arms, especially as his big money replacement Naby Keita has simply not come off as yet.

A loan move, or even a big money move but at a fraction of what Barca paid for the Brazilian is not out of the question for Jurgen Klopp’s men, and if he were to come back, then the title would surely be there for Liverpool to take.

Reds fans, what do you think? How good a signing would this be? Let us know in the comments!

HYS: Would Southampton fans prefer to have Oriol Romeu or Harrison Reed playing?

[ad_pod ]Loaned-out Southampton man Harrison Reed continues to impress in his season-long loan spell with Championship club Blackburn Rovers after scoring a stunning equaliser in their 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Saturday.

The 23-year-old has made 30 first-team appearances for Saints but has never become a regular in the squad, and with the plethora of midfield options available to Mark Hughes this term it was decided that he should spend another temporary spell away from St Mary’s with Rovers following a similarly successful time with Norwich City during the 2017/18 campaign.

Reed, who has played in the centre of the pitch and on the right for the Lancashire outfit, is certainly making a big impression with his latest goal his second in nine league games, while he also provided an assist in his team’s 2-1 win against Leeds United earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Oriol Romeu hasn’t looked like the same player since winning the club’s player of the season award in the 2016/17 campaign, and in recent times he has found himself out of the starting XI with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Mario Lemina preferred in midfield.

The Spaniard did start the goalless draw against Newcastle United on Saturday however with Hojbjerg missing out through illness, but as he often has over the course of the previous 12 months he looked a little off the pace.

Mike Ashley has to splash out on Myziane Maolida before deadline day

Deadline day is now a week away and Newcastle are still very much looking to conduct some business as the window counts down.

Rafa Benitez has been given a very tight budget to work with this summer. As a result, the Magpies have brought a few new faces but for very little expenditure.

Primarily, Newcastle need a striker, especially now since the departure of Aleksandar Mitrovic to Fulham. According to reports, Newcastle are close to signing Japan international and Mainz forward, Yoshinori Muto but as of yet have not finalised the deal.

Although the striker is well-rated, Benitez still needs some more depth up front to help bolster the 39 goals the club scored last season. With that in mind, L’Equipe via Get French Football News is reporting that the club is interested in Lyon striker Myziane Maolida.

The Breakdown

Capable of playing across the front three positions, Maolida is a very talented striker who impressed at the recent UEFA Under-19 Championships.

The 19-year-old French striker is yet another talent to come from the famed Lyon academy and could be another star to have been created in the south of France.

While the youngster wouldn’t immediately start for the club up front, he could well take one of the spots on either wing.

Maolida made 13 appearances for Lyon in League 1 last season, and although he only scored one goal, given the added playing time and competition in the Premier League, he may just blossom into a top talent.

What do you think Newcastle fans?

In Focus: Waris has shown potential to be consistent force for West Ham

As reported by The Daily Mail, West Ham United are locked in a three team race to land Lorient attacker Abdul Majeed Waris this summer.

What’s the story?

With the arrival of Javier Hernandez, Hammers fans are hoping they’ve finally found the poaching striker they need to stick away chances in the English Premier League. However, other options are still needed if they’re to be a real force this season and it seems that Slaven Bilic has found another attacker that can play alongside the Mexican international.

The Daily Mail report West Ham have made initial enquiries to Ligue 1 side Lorient about bringing Abdul Majeed Waris to the London Stadium.

The paper reckon his club rate him at around £12m, putting him well within the Irons’ reach. However, the report also states that they’ll have to battle with West Brom and Burnley for his signature.

Who is he?

The Ghanaian international has been an effective force in Ligue 1 over the last two seasons since making the switch from Trabzonspor, scoring 21 goals in 58 appearances for Lorient.

That number is even more impressive when you consider he plays many of his matches on the left wing, although he does have the ability to play as a centre-forward too.

On the wing, his threat, pace and finishing ability could complement Hernandez perfectly and transform the Hammers attack. The fact he can play centrally also provides depth.

Can he be the missing piece of Slaven Bilic’s attacking puzzle?
