Rangers should do all they can to keep Daniel Candeias

[ad_pod ]

Rangers have “reluctantly but respectfully” allowed Daniel Candeias the chance to talk to Genclerbirligi, Steven Gerrard has told The Daily Record.

What’s the story?

The Daily Record reported that the winger has concerns about becoming a squad player under Gerrard. And with the Turkish top-flight side’s interest clearly quite concrete, the Portuguese ace is said to be considering their offer.

Gerrard has plenty of wide options at the moment, with Jake Hastie, Sheyi Ojo, Greg Stewart, Jordan Jones and Scott Arfield, so can’t guarantee game time for Candeias. That depth of talent looks like it could be a blessing and a curse.

Despite being open to the offer from Genclerbirligi, Candeias has reported to training today, as Gerrard gets his squad ready for Progres Niederkorn in the Europa League qualifiers. This could be a sign that the 31-year-old is yet to make a decision on where his future lies.

Keep Morelos happy!

Candeias and Alfredo Morelos have made no secret of their bond off the pitch. With the Colombian striker unable to speak English fluently, he’s lent heavily on Candeias and the two have grown close.

The 22-year-old is “shattered”‘ at the prospect of potentially losing his close friend from Ibrox, according to Football Insider. As well as being good friends off the pitch, the two have brought the best out of each other on the park too.

The duo were two of three big constants at the club in Gerrard’s debut campaign as a gaffer, with captain James Tavernier also performing excellently in the same period.

Candeias might not be guaranteed as much football this year and he will be 32 by the end of the next campaign, but he did muster up 12 assists last season, so losing him would harm the creativity that helps contribute to Morelos’ monster goals tally.

If the Gers want to do everything they can to both keep Morelos happy off the pitch and smashing goals in on it, then selling Candeias could well turn out to be one huge mistake.

Everton fans react as David Neres is again linked with Goodison Park move

[ad_pod ]

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Everton are in pole position to secure the services of Ajax attacker David Neres ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

The report, which has been translated by Sport Witness, claims that Everton are pressing to complete a summer deal for the Brazil international, who is valued at £45m.

The 22-year-old enjoyed an impressive 2018-19 season for his Dutch club – scoring 12 times and contributing 15 assists in all competitions.

Ajax won a league and cup double last term in addition to reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.

And Neres played a key role in the team’s success.

The Everton fans have been on social media offering their views on the latest rumour.

And it would be fair to say that there are a lot of mixed opinions – some seem excited, but others believe that they have heard it all before.

Tottenham must swoop for David Neres in this summer’s transfer window

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Calciomercato, Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to pay £54m to land Ajax attacker David Neres in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the word, then?

Neres enjoyed a terrific 2018-19 campaign for Ajax – scoring 12 times and registering 15 assists in 50 appearances in all competitions.

The 22-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Everton this summer and the Toffees are said to be in pole position to land the Brazil international.

According to Calciomercato, though, Tottenham are determined to hijack the Merseyside outfit’s move for Neres. Indeed, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are said to be prepared to pay £54m to land the attacker.

Spurs have already broken their transfer record to bring French midfielder Tanguy Ndombele to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

However, the capital outfit continue to be linked with a number of players ahead of the start of the new Premier League campaign.

And bringing Neres to London for the 2019-20 season would send out a huge message to the rest of the league and indeed Europe.

Why must Tottenham move for Neres?

As mentioned, Neres contributed 12 goals and 15 assists for Ajax last term, including two goals and two assists in the Champions League as the Dutch giants reached the semi-finals of the competition.

What’s more, the attacker has a record of 29 goals and 32 assists in 99 appearances for his current club in all competitions.

Neres’ numbers are very impressive for a player still relatively young, but there is no question that his versatility will also be hugely attractive to Pochettino.

Transfermarkt have listed Neres as playing on 23 occasions as a left winger last season, 20 times as a right winger and seven times as an attacking midfielder.

He played in all three of those positions during Ajax’s run to the semi-finals of the European Cup and caused a lot of problems with his ability to rotate.

Tottenham need movement around Harry Kane if they are to move up another level in the coming seasons and a summer move for Neres makes a whole lot of sense.

Liverpool fans comment as Taiwo Awoniyi leaves the club on loan

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool forward Taiwo Awoniyi has joined Bundesliga outfit Mainz 05 on loan for the entirety of the 2019-20 campaign.

The Nigerian has been with the Reds since 2015 but has not yet made a single appearance for the Premier League club.

Indeed, the 21-year-old was immediately sent on loan to FSV Frankfurt upon his arrival at Anfield, whilst he has also turned out for NEC, Royal Excel Mouscron and Gent on loan during a well-travelled career.

Liverpool are not exactly full of options in the centre-forward position at the moment.

But the decision has been made to send Awoniyi on loan to Mainz, who finished 12th in the Bundesliga last season.

The Merseyside club’s fans have been on social media offering their views on the confirmed exit.

And to be honest, not too many seem bothered that the Nigeria Under-23 international has moved on.

West Ham target Aaron Long hopeful of deal being done

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

West Ham United target Aaron Long is hopeful of securing a move to the club before Thursday’s transfer deadline, per Sky Sports.

What’s the word?

The report claims that the Hammers are keen to sign the New York Red Bulls defender, who has a £4m release clause in his contract.

However, they have yet to obtain a work permit ahead of the transfer, the report claims, but Long has expressed his desire to move to England and hopes the matter can be resolved by Thursday’s deadline.

He said: “As our biggest ally, it seems strange that a football player from the US can’t automatically get a work visa to play in England.

“Every kid in the USA dreams of playing in the English Premier League. Not many players get the chance, so of course, I would like to play there someday.”

[ad_pod ]

A considered punt

This is a bit of a risky move from the Hammers but there needs to be an investment in the backline.

Few fans will be aware of who Long is, such is the stature of MLS football, but he was named the MLS Defender of the Year for 2018 and is also a full United States international.

He has won 11 caps for his country, scoring two goals, and is a cheap option in an inflated transfer market.

Indeed, the Hammers have struggled to keep the goals out in pre-season, conceding 12 in six games against Altach, Manchester City, Newcastle United, Fulham, Hertha Berlin and Athletic Bilbao.

With a clash with Pep Guardiola’s champions set to kick off their 2019/20 season, Manuel Pellegrini’s defence needs all the help it can get.

Exclusive: Football FanCast speaks to Gareth Barry

Ahead of the Community Shield between Manchester City and Liverpool at Wembley, Football FanCast spoke exclusively to Gareth Barry.

Barry, who holds the record for the highest number of Premier League appearances, was at the home of English football to present at the The FA & McDonald’s Grassroots Awards National Ceremony.

He said: “I’m at Wembley today helping the FA present some awards for grassroots football, for the volunteers that help out kids across the country and give up their time to help this game grow in the UK.”

It is the noble commitments of individuals at grassroots level – often unpaid, time consuming and tiresome – that prop up the very foundations of the English game, that allow youngsters the opportunity to blossom into fully fledged professionals, that give the next generation an opportunity to pursue their passion.

The awards included: Coach of the Year, Official of the Year and the Rising Star award, which Barry himself was presenting.

The 38-year-old knows all too well about being a rising star having left home to join Aston Villa at just 16, settling in with a foster parent in the Midlands some 200 miles from home.

In the career that has unfolded and spanned more than twenty years, it’s become abundantly clear that Barry is a player defined by his selflessness, professionalism and humility, qualities that are synonymous with those individuals who were recognised for their contribution to grassroots football at the home of English football.

The former Manchester City star was naturally intrigued by the Premier League curtain raiser and he suggested the fixture could have a small psychological impact for both clubs.

“I think it might have a little bearing, it’s a little advantage they’ll be looking to sneak in before the start of the season. But I think both managers will be using it as more minutes for the players in pre-season. Pep made quite big thing of it last year, he wanted this one on top of it (the domestic treble)!”

Guardiola’s relentless thirst for silverware, no matter how big or small, was quenched via a narrow penalty shootout win. But evidence that Liverpool remain a stark threat to City’s supremacy was sprayed all over the Wembley turf, and the Reds’ dismantling of Norwich City last Friday provided a fresh reminder when the new season got underway at Anfield.

Barry ultimately joined City in 2009 but not without first resisting the advances of Liverpool. Reports closer to the time suggested Rafael Benitez was eager to replace Xabi Alonso with Villa’s lynchpin, but the Spaniard missed out on his midfield target.

Why, you might wonder, would a player turn down a club of Liverpool’s rich history and international prestige, one who had won the Champions League just four years prior, in favour of little City, a club who had failed to win a single trophy since 1976.

“The one thing that stands out at the time when I was leaving Villa, and obviously Liverpool were interested. There’s one conversation that I always go back to. I spoke with Mark Hughes about the project and he said City are a train that’s going somewhere special, and you’d be foolish not to get on it.

“He mentioned a few players they were trying to sign and he mentioned the ambition of the owners and what they wanted to do on the training ground and eventually they saw the club winning Premier Leagues. That’s how I saw it and I got on that train!”

And a wise decision as well. The steamrolling City train has perpetually gathered momentum, toppled the established order and transformed the landscape of English football.

Barry was a firm part of the transition and isn’t at all surprised by the success they have accumulated since the takeover.

“I did see them winning trophies in the time I was there and, once clubs pick up that trophy and break their duck, it breeds confidence. They’ve continued to bring in top class players and to improve everything around the club both on and off the pitch, and they’re a powerhouse of a club across the world.”

City’s status as a global powerhouse has been cemented by Guardiola, who has finished the job of his predecessors in imperious style. Records have fallen and titles achieved while his side have championed a brand of football that has arguably revolutionised the entire footballing pyramid from grassroots level upwards.

It is easy for supporters to gush over their current situation and forget that this is not a pattern that can continue indefinitely. Such is the beauty of football, changes in management can stimulate tectonic power shifts. Just ask Manchester United.

But when questioned about City’s potential contingency plan, Barry spoke with an assurance that suggested he’s familiar enough with the moving cogs behind the scenes to trust in the long-term future.

“That will be a problem [Guardiola’s departure] but again everything comes to an end. I’m sure the people in place are planning for that future but why look past Pep when he seems to be really happy and enjoying himself.”

As Barry alluded to, breaking the duck is imperative. One brings two and City’s ability to lift four Premier League titles in the last eight seasons certainly owes a great debt to Roberto Mancini’s title-winning campaign in the 2011/12 season, one which will go down in the annals for its spine-tingling drama and astonishing unpredictability – one which the holding midfielder played a key role in.

Sitting alongside Nigel de Jong at the base of a deep-lying two man midfield pivot, the partnership formed the backbone of the club’s success. They complemented one another and always seemed to operate in tandem, remaining aware of each other’s whereabouts at all times. But how did the chemistry translate away from the pitch?

“That was it really, Nigel’s really bubbly. Even our styles of play are a bit different, he’s a bit more diving into tackles and letting people know he’s around and I’m more calm and that’s pretty much how we are off the pitch. He’s loud and bubbly and I’m a bit more quiet, so we complement each other on and off the pitch.

“It was a good time there and I enjoyed playing with Nigel. Yaya used to pop up in front of us and he was great to have.”

Throughout Barry’s career he was lauded by his managers but perhaps somewhat undervalued by rival supporters. That, to an extent, is a by-product of playing in defensive midfield. It is a humble role, one which requires immense discipline and a selfless attitude.

It is a thankless task on paper but ringing endorsements from various managers throughout Barry’s career underlined how highly he was regarded by the most important figures in the game. Roberto Martinez labelled him as “one of the best English players ever”; Ronald Koeman dubbed him one of the best players he’s ever managed; Mancini claimed he was fit to captain the England national team.

Praise of comparable esteem was not usually as forthcoming from the average fan, though that was never a concern to Barry.

“I think that’s it. It’s one thing that’s not really bothered me. Whenever I go back to my former clubs I always get a good reception, a good ovation, that means a lot and I don’t need the opposition fans to appreciate me too!

“As long as the fans who follow you week in week out and follow you across the country, across Europe, are happy, then that’s more than enough for me personally.

“I’ve played at four clubs now and I’ve been picked for a lot of games, so the manager is the one! If they’re happy with what I’m doing that’s more than enough for me.”

After his contract at West Bromwich Albion expired, Barry was one of the more attractive free agents on the market, but the Baggies didn’t allow him to leave for too long as it has since been confirmed that he will re-sign for the club.

When we spoke to the Premier League legend he seemed eager to return to action rather than follow the likes of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard into management, so the announcement comes as little surprise.

“I’m just getting over my operation on my knee this year and doing a bit of rehab.

“Until it’s official that the playing career is over then I’ll make a decision then and see what the future holds.”

Leeds fans concerned with Gaetano Berardi after Marcelo Bielsa’s injury update

[ad_pod ]

Phil Hay provided an update from Marcelo Bielsa’s pre-match press conference ahead of their clash with Stoke this weekend, detailing the Whites’ injury concerns.

The Argentine declared that Stuart Dallas and Liam Cooper could both be out.

It was a piece of news that worried some Leeds fans, however, as they appeared concerned by the fact that Gaetano Berardi might be back in the side.

The Swiss defender is yet to start in the Championship this year and certain supporters of the club don’t want that to change. He was branded a liability by two individuals, being described as not good enough.

A further fan said they didn’t want the 31-year-old anywhere near the side. One even said they’d rather have Pascal Struijk in the team.

Berardi started 12 times in the Championship last season, a term which saw him pick up a red card in the playoffs.

His discipline has been a cause for concern throughout his time at Elland Road, receiving six in league action after arriving during the 2014/15 campaign.

It’s perhaps understandable that Leeds fans don’t want him to play.

Here’s the best of their reaction on Twitter.

Everton fans want to see more of Cenk Tosun after EFL Cup showing

[ad_pod ]

The introduction of Cenk Tosun was crucial to Everton’s win over Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, and it was a performance that has prompted some Everton fans to call for increased involvement in the side.

When Tosun signed for the Toffees in January 2018 for £27m he was intended to be the main striker, but he has since scored only eight league goals.

His failure to find the net on a regular basis restricted him to just one league start in the final 11 games of the previous season.

However, his replacement, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, struggled for form in the same period, scoring just twice between February and May, and so far this season he is yet to get on the scoresheet despite starting every Premier League match.

As a result, some Everton fans are keen for a change and, after witnessing Tosun’s headed knock-down for Alex Iwobi’s goal against Lincoln, they have begun to question why the Turkey international hadn’t featured prior to Wednesday night.

QPR fans react as Jordan Hugill wins August Player of the Month award

[ad_pod ]

Some QPR fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was announced that Jordan Hugill had won the club’s Player of the Month award for August.

In what was his first month as a QPR player, the man on loan from West Ham managed to find the back of the net five times in just six appearances.

Hugill’s goals helped Mark Warburton’s side to 10 points out of a possible 18 in August, leaving them sat in eighth-place as we embark on the first international break of the season.

A couple of fans below want the 27-year-old to sign for the club on a permanent basis – whilst it remains to be seen whether or not that happens, they will presumably be pleased to know that there is no recall clause for West Ham to activate in the deal.

Another supporter thinks Eberechi Eze should have won the award over Hugill.

Let’s take a look at some more of the Twitter reaction…

Wolves’ Ruben Neves must be adapted to attack when Nuno rotates

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

The international break is now underway for Premier League clubs – which should be a sigh of relief for Wolves considering they have played ten competitive fixtures already this season.

On top of a pre-season tour to China, Nuno Santo’s side have competed in six Europa League ties and played four Premier League matches.

Their game against Burnley was the first time they showed any real signs of fatigue as they needed a 96th minute penalty from Raul Jimenez to salvage a point.

Meanwhile, this weekend they were defeated for the first time this season in a 3-2 loss at Everton as the Portuguese manager rung the changes.

Have you heard the strangest chant in the Premier League yet? Hear it in the video below…

Some of their squad will now earn a break, but because of their recent exploits including a seventh-place finish in the league last season, others will also venture around the globe for their respective nations.

When the players return from their national team duties, Nuno will need to adapt how he does things if they are to cope with the added strain of the Europa League group stages on top of this Premier League season.

On the Chalkboard

We highlighted on Football FanCast earlier this week how defensive the Wolves team appeared against Everton as Joao Moutinho didn’t start the game – he’s one of their most vital creative outlets.

There’s no issue in rotating your side, but it is how you set them out to achieve the goal of ultimately winning all three points.

It wasn’t good enough against Everton because they lacked so much in the final third – recording just 108 of their 321 passes in that zone and registering 8 shots.

Below is the heatmap from Ruben Neves in that match, per WhoScored.

You can see just how deep he is sitting – 34 of his 52 passes in the match were in his own half.

It is true that the 22-year-old is a defensive midfielder but he can offer a lot in attack too.

The Portuguese international has scored ten goals across his last two seasons with his only strike so far in the Premier League this campaign being a scorcher against Manchester United, which rescued them a point at Molineux.

Watch Wolverhampton Wanderers Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

You want him to be getting into those positions more often, especially when you are playing without Moutinho for example.

Defensive duties shouldn’t be an issue as you’ve got Romain Saiss, a defensive-minded player by trade, whose primary role is being able to sit deep as well as Leander Dendoncker, who usually plays alongside Neves.

As a result, it allows the playmaking ability of Moutinho to shine through in this team.

Without him, however, they are lacking and that means that Neves should take on his role when absent.
