What to expect

A big win against Mumbai Indians (MI) was just what DC needed to shake off any tiredness going into the next game. They will be facing a bruised RCB less than 24 hours after their match against MI, but will have a lot to cheer about. Firstly, they are at the top of the table with eight points from six games. Their bowling in the last two games, where they’ve kept their opponents to sub-130 totals, has been quite excellent. They’ve also been among the best fielding units this tournament, with the likes of Annabel Sutherland, Minnu Mani and Jemimah Rodrigues saving a number of runs with their acrobatics on the field.RCB have lost their last three games at their home venue, but the defeat in the game against Gujarat Giants – where they were restricted to 125 for 7 “affected” them the most, captain Smriti Mandhana said after the game. There are several questions for them heading into this clash: is the batting too dependent on Ellyse Perry? Are they missing their spin trio of Asha Sobhana, Sophie Molineux and Shreyanka Patil, who were their key bowlers at the Chinnaswamy last year? Is Mandhana’s subpar form affecting them a bit too much? RCB will want to quickly find answers and give the home crowd something to cheer about for one last time this season before moving to the Lucknow leg.

Her flying one-handed stop to her right to save a boundary in the 13th over highlighted why she’s one of the best fielders going around in the circuit. She’s bowled only 14 overs across five matches and has taken five wickets. Georgia Wareham bounced back well after conceding 50 runs in the first match of the season, picking nine wickets in five matches so far. She picked two crucial wickets against Giants, removing Harleen Deol and top-scorer Ashleigh Gardner, although it was a bit too late. She has played at No. 3 for Australia before – even has a half-century playing in the position – and RCB could use her as a floater in the middle order in case of early wickets.

Jewell was contracted to Hurricanes but has been traded to Renegades on a two-year deal.Renegades were the most active club during the player movement window having already signed free agents Jason Behrendorff and Brendan Doggett.A number of high quality players remain uncontracted to BBL clubs including David, Marsh, Matthew Renshaw, Marnus Labuschagne and D’Arcy Short among others. Jadeja’s all-round value makes him the frontrunner to be India’s first-choice spinner on this tour, but Kuldeep is likely to come into the picture if conditions allow them to pick a second spinner. Kuldeep’s left-arm wristspin was instrumental in India’s comeback from 1-0 down to beat England 4-1 at home in early 2024 – he picked up 19 wickets in four Tests at an average of 20.15.”Playing alongside Jadeja is such a great honour for me,” Kuldeep said. “Obviously, Jadeja and [R] Ashwin have been brilliant over the last few years. When I made my debut in India, they helped me a lot. And even now, we have been having a lot of chat about how to bowl to certain batters, given the way the England batters are batting at the moment.”I’m actually spending a lot of time with him, not only on the field, but also outside as well. With England transitioning away from green seamers, over recent years, towards flatter pitches that suit their ultra-aggressive style of batting, there is a chance spin could play a role in the five Tests should the matches last longer.”It seems like there will be good wickets for spinners,” Kuldeep said. “The wicket for the practice match was good for batting. There was some light moisture on the first day, and the seamers got some help, but as the game went on, I felt there was some bounce for the spinners, and while I didn’t get much turn during my first spell on the first day, it’s day three today and I’ll get to know how the wicket is now when I get to bowl, but whatever practice sessions I’ve had so far, the ball has been turning a bit. It’ll be really nice if it remains this way during the [Test] matches too.”If the conditions are warm, as they have been over the last three-four days, and if the wickets are like this, spinners can get help. A thrilling Under-19 Test match between England and India at Beckenham ended in draw, after England reached 270 for 7 at stumps on the final day.India set England a target of 350 to win from 63 overs, after making 248 in the second innings: Vihaan Malhotra hit 63 and a there was a late charge by RS Ambrish, who made 53, while Archie Vaughan took 6 for 84 after bowling unchanged from the City End.After losing three early wickets Hamza Shaikh and Ben Mayes gave England hope of a win with a stand of 119. Mayes went for 51, but Shaikh made 112 before he was run out. When Thomas Rew went for 50 India scented blood, but Ralphie Albert and Jack Home batted out 11.5 overs to secure the draw.India began the final day with a lead of 229 and seven wickets remaining, with Malhotra and Abhigyan Kundu the not out batters on 34 and nought respectively. The former took just 15 minutes reach his half-century with a cover driven four off Vaughan, but he was caught behind by Rew trying to fend off Alex Green and a downpour then caused a 30-minute delay.When play resumed Rew took two more catches before lunch. ESPNcricinfo understands Suryakumar’s use of the term “Operation Sindoor” – a term coined by the Indian government during the military skirmish between the two countries that followed the Pahalgam terror attacks in April – was one of the PCB’s points of objection.Suryakumar had used the term at the post-match press conference following that September 14 match, while dedicating the win to the victims of the terror attacks as well as India’s armed forces.That match also caused another controversy, with Pakistan lodging a “formal protest” against match referee Andy Pycroft because he had “requested the captains not to shake hands during the toss”. At the time, the PCB had demanded Pycroft to be taken off the roster for their matches, which the ICC rejected.That incident threatened to snowball into something bigger when Pakistan didn’t arrive on time for their match against UAE. According to Sky Sports, former West Ham midfielder Ravel Morrison is nearing a loan move from Lazio to Swedish outfit Ostersunds FK and has joined up with the club at their Marbella training camp.

Morrison made just 24 appearances in all competitions for the Hammers between 2012 and 2015 after joining from Manchester United and was sent out on loan three times.

Once billed as one of England’s upcoming talents, the 26-year-old, according to Phil Neville, even outshone a young Paul Pogba, while Red Devils legend Paddy Crerand said he was the best talent he’d seen since George Best. High praise, indeed.

West Ham came through their latest test with flying colours.

Their draw with Liverpool on Monday evening was a perfect example of a club overcoming normal expectations against a bigger team.

They turned in a display of the highest calibre, their defence was disciplined, their midfield strong and their finishing precise.

But Manuel Pellegrini will know that the display was the exception to the recent rule, as they had gone on a three-game losing streak in all competitions immediately prior, including a shock FA Cup defeat to AFC Wimbledon.

Their fixture list, however, looks menacing in the coming weeks.

First, they play Crystal Palace in a London derby before another capital battle against Fulham. They then take on Manchester City.

The question, then, is whether the Irons can maintain the level of performance that saw them go so close to beating Liverpool.

They actually defeated both Palace and Fulham in the reverse fixtures earlier this season – 3-2 and 2-0 respectively – but a 4-0 defeat to City shows that the third game may be something of a free hit.

Momentum, of course, is key.

The Hammers are currently 12th, six points behind seventh-placed Wolves, but the club do hold ambitions of qualifying for Europe.

Two wins in a row would go a long way to exorcising the ghosts of their terrible performances throughout January and would also show that they have the talent within the squad to hunt down Nuno Espirito Santo’s men.

First, they have to prove that they have the ability to beat those around him, and not just turn up when the Sky cameras are switched on.

Everton have a tough run of fixtures coming up with Liverpool and Chelsea to come to Goodison Park, so things aren’t about to get any easier for Marco Silva’s side. 

The Toffees will still feel as if they can challenge for a European spot in the current campaign, despite losing their last three games, as there’s still a lot of games left to play.

Interestingly, it appears as if the Merseyside club are eyeing a possible summer swoop, as according to Le10 Sport (via HITC), Everton are interested in a summer move for Thomas Meunier.

Meunier has established himself as one of Europe’s best full-backs since moving to Paris Saint-Germain, but he just hasn’t been able to work his way into Thomas Tuchel’s plans in recent times.

Seamus Coleman has had his injury troubles and he’s set to turn 31 this year, so it would make sense for the Toffees to bring in a replacement.

Marcel Brands pulled off a masterstroke by bringing Lucas Digne to the Premier League back in the summer transfer window, as he’s gone on to become one of Everton’s star performers.

Believe it or not, the PSG man is currently a better player than Digne as he’s more defensively assured and can apply a deadly touch in the final third, whether it’s with a dangerous cross or a strike from distance. Indeed, the Frenchman was arguably Everton’s best summer signing and offers an awful lot going forward, but Meunier can provide more height and has more goals and assists to his name this season, despite playing one less game.

So, Brands has the opportunity to pull off another masterstroke by moving for Meunier, who is valued at £31.5 million (by Transfermarkt). Indeed, the Belgium international could really thrive in the Toffees’ system as Marco Silva gives the full-backs the licence to get forward, which is what the Belgian does best.

Leeds United forward Kemar Roofe has been sidelined with a knee injury, as reported by the BBC.

The 26-year-old is the Whites’ top scorer so far this season, having racked up 14 goals in 26 Championship outings, as per Transfermarkt’s stats. His absence will come as a major blow to manager Marcelo Bielsa, especially at such a crucial time in the season, with Leeds in the thick of the title race.

The Argentine coach will have to find a way to make his team work without Roofe, beginning with Saturday’s visit of struggling Bolton Wanderers to Elland Road.

Leeds’ squad is already small, as is Bielsa’s preference. However, that does make dealing with Roofe’s injury an even greater challenge.

Leeds’ style of play this season is very defined and highly particular. Bielsa has encouraged the Whites to play aggressive, intense, high-pressing football. Throughout this campaign, Roofe has played a key role within this system.

The attacker has the stamina, energy and work rate to relentlessly harry opponents and defend from the front. Whoever comes into the starting XI to replace the Englishman must replicate his contribution in this regard.

Maintaining the intensity

In recent weeks, following the return to fitness of 25-year-old No. 9 Patrick Bamford, Roofe has dropped deeper, into the No. 10 role behind the striker. 

Bamford will likely start against Bolton, meaning it is in this No. 10 berth where Roofe must be replaced. The two most obvious candidates for this vacancy are Tyler Roberts and Pablo Hernandez. 

The 33-year-old Hernandez would bring a great deal of guile and invention to this task. However, 20-year-old Roberts could provide more energy.

Bielsa should give the younger man the chance to shine on Saturday. At this stage in the season, it is vital that Leeds can maintain their intensity, and the inclusion of Roberts gives them their best chance of doing so.
