Sussex swoop to sign Shahzad

Ajmal Shahzad has completed a surprise move to Sussex despite having a year to run on his contract with Nottinghamshire

Ajmal Shahzad has completed a surprise move to Sussex despite having a year to run on his contract with Nottinghamshire. Shahzad, an England prospect a few years ago, has signed a three-year deal with Sussex after Nottinghamshire agreed to let him leave.”It has come about quickly but I’m just delighted to be down here with a great squad, great management, surrounded by good people and I hope it brings out the best in me,” Shahzad said.”This move has been made purely for cricketing reasons and I’m hoping to get the best I can out of it to progress my career. I’d like to thank Notts for being so understanding. My white ball cricket has come on a lot while I’ve been here but I want to be a prominent member of the squad in all formats and Sussex have given me the opportunity to do that.”Shahzad was in and out of Nottinghamshire’s Championship team but played a key role in white-ball cricket, helping them to win the 2013 Yorkshire Bank 40.His frustrations at an England career that died almost as soon as it had begun is reflected in his restive mood. He has been capped in all three formats but last played an international match at the 2011 World Cup. Shahzad will look to Sussex’s cricket manager, Mark Robinson, to have the same sort of uplifting effect on his career that he had on Chris Jordan, who has ascended to the England team since joining as a similarly unfulfilled talent from Surrey two years ago.Robinson did not flinch at such ambitions: “We’re delighted that Ajmal is joining us. He is a cricketer of great ability and who hasn’t yet fulfilled all of his potential. He can bowl with a yard of pace and has the potential to be a genuine bowling allrounder. We hope he can have a similar impact that Chris Jordan had, and fulfil the same role, helping balance the team.”Shahzad is Sussex’s second close-season signing in an attempt to replenish their pace-bowling ranks. They also won the contest for the Essex tearaway Tymal Mills. Life will certainly be interesting at Hove next season as they seek a double jackpot. Notts, meanwhile, look light on pace-bowling resources.Sussex will be Shahzad’s fourth county since May 2012. He left Yorkshire in aggravating circumstances, with the county frustrated over his strong-willed nature and reluctance to follow team goals. Shahzad later conceded that there had been “faults on both sides”.Shahzad, the first British-born Asian to play for Yorkshire, moved initially on loan to cross-Pennines rivals Lancashire and then signed a three-year contract with Notts at the end of the season. He took only 18 wickets in eight Championship appearances for Nottinghamshire last season but was more impressive in the limited-overs formats, which increasingly seems to suit his attacking style and outgoing personality.”Ajmal’s form with the white ball was very good but he didn’t make quite the impact that he would have wanted in our four-day side,” said Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket and an England selector.”His move might influence the manner in which we recruit our overseas players next season, with an eye on limited-overs cricket and it’s highly likely that we’ll have two bowlers who have been selected to specialise at different stages of the season. In red-ball cricket, I see this as an opportunity for us to promote from within and we’ll be looking to Andy Carter, Jake Ball, Brett Hutton and Luke Wood to make a claim for a place.”

Clarke doubt opens captaincy debate

Australia’s selectors and board will deliberate overnight on the choice of captain for Wednesday’s second Test at the Gabba, after Michael Clarke’s frank admission about his clouded future gave all parties reason for pause

Daniel Brettig14-Dec-20143:38

Who can replace unfit Clarke?

Lehmann lauds Lyon

The metaphor was a little mixed but the sentiment was not. Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann spoke warmly of Nathan Lyon’s fifth day efforts in Adelaide, suggested his fourth-innings breakout performance would be the catalyst for many more.
“The big thing is the carrot of not bowling teams out on the last day and he dispelled that,” Lehmann said. “Really pleased for him. It was an emotional day for him.”
Lehmann and the spin coach John Davison worked closely with Lyon at breaks in play on day five, after he also spoke with Shane Warne before play. Lyon can be slow to accept new ideas, but adapted well in Adelaide.
“We told him to bowl around the wicket for a couple of overs [after tea], which was nice,” Lehmann said. “I think he might have had an opportunity there as well. He bowled really well from over the wicket as well but sometimes you have got to change. That is the pleasing thing, that he’s starting to learn the game.”
As former South Australia cricketers, Davison and Lehmann were both confident that wickets would come in a rush at some point of day five. “Lucky enough to have played a bit of cricket in Adelaide, so you know that it does change very quickly in Adelaide the last two days,” Lehmann said. “It is about doing the basics we have been doing all game but knowing it is a bit harder to get 160 in a session. If you can open up an end and get a new bat in, wickets can fall quickly. But credit to India for way they played. Kohli and Vijay were unbelievable.”

Australia’s selectors and board will deliberate overnight on the choice of captain for Wednesday’s second Test at the Gabba, after Michael Clarke’s frank admission about his clouded future gave all parties reason for pause. The longtime deputy Brad Haddin took up the role when Clarke was indisposed by another hamstring injury on the final day in Adelaide, and had been mooted earlier this summer by the team performance manager Pat Howard as his preferred recommendation for stand-in leader. However the uncertain nature of Clarke’s return date beyond the end of the India series, plus the burgeoning leadership skills of Steven Smith in particular, leave the selectors and board to ponder whether now is the time to be thinking longer term than Haddin, given the fact the wicketkeeper has planned for next year’s World Cup and Ashes tour but no further. The coach Darren Lehmann said discussions may stretch beyond Haddin.”He brings experience and his knowledge of the game – really pleased with what he did on the last afternoon,” Lehmann said. “From our point of view we will have to work that out as a selection panel and then go to the board and see what they say. There’s always change, isn’t there, sometimes, you never know.”It will be a case of getting ready for Brisbane with a short turnaround of three days. Outstanding Test match, India were fantastic as well, but we have to move on reasonably quickly, and get prepared for life without the captain for the next few Test matches. I think he will be back. You have your fingers crossed. We will wait and see.”Smith, David Warner and Shane Watson all took turns manoeuvring fielders and cajoling bowlers after tea on day five in Adelaide, where an eight-wicket denouement concluded what Lehmann called “probably the best” Test match he had been involved in. A probable compromise between present and future would be the appointment of Haddin as captain and Smith as deputy, the same roles they shared on the Australia A tour of England in 2013.Clarke was included in Australia’s World Cup preliminary squad of 30, and Lehmann said the selectors had perused tournament regulations, which would allow him to be replaced should his back or hamstring issues rear yet again.”We have already looked at those rules, that’s not the case,” Lehmann said when asked if a pre-existing physical issue would preclude Clarke’s replacement. “For me, we want him fully fit. He knows he has to be fully fit for one-day cricket.”He was magnificent in this Test match and he has been magnificent the last few weeks with what’s happened with our team and what has happened with Phillip and his family. He needs to get it right. He knows that. We know that. One day cricket is an explosive game and we need guys fully fit all the time.”Fitness will also be a point of discussion for Australia’s pacemen, after all of Mitchell Johnson, Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle looked short of their best in Adelaide. Josh Hazlewood is waiting in the wings, while Mitchell Starc has also been added to the squad for the Gabba. Siddle battled a stomach bug during the early part of the match, while Harris was understandably somewhat ginger in his first Test match after extensive knee surgery.”I don’t know, I literally don’t know, he’s just come back in the side,” Lehmann admitted when asked whether Harris could be back up for Brisbane. “You’d like to think so at the Gabba. Having said that if they are not 100% they won’t play. We might need to [make changes].”We will see how they pull up. If they are 100% they will play. A couple of them are sore but the next day or two will tell. [Siddle] was a little bit unwell first innings. Second innings it was the nature of the game. He bowled tightly which is what we need from him. Getting some more wickets if possible. He knows that but he is doing everything he can behind the scenes.”Another man in the spotlight during the match was the opener Chris Rogers, who has not passed 50 in four Test matches since making a stubborn rearguard hundred against South Africa in Port Elizabeth. While agreeing he needed to find some runs, Lehmann spoke strongly of Rogers’ value as an equable partner for Warner and a useful character around the team.”The thing is he is a great foil for David Warner,” Lehmann said. “That’s what I do like, and we like that as a selection panel. But like everyone, you’ve got to make some runs. He knows he’s got to make some runs. There is no hiding from the fact.”But he has put on some really good partnerships with David Warner over the last 18 months and been a great foil behind the scenes, a lot of things you guys don’t see. So we are really pleased where he’s at, we’d obviously like him to make some more runs though.”

Sri Lanka pick uncapped Sandakan

Uncapped left-arm chinaman bowler Lakshan Rangika has been picked in Sri Lanka’s squad for the fourth and fifth ODIs against England, while seamer Suranga Lakmal rejoins the side after an injury layoff

Uncapped left-arm chinaman bowler Lakshan Sandakan has been picked in Sri Lanka’s squad for the fourth and fifth ODIs against England, while seamer Suranga Lakmal rejoins the side after an injury layoff. Middle-order batsman Ashan Priyanjan also joins the squad proper, having been named as batting cover for the third ODI in Hambantota. He displaces Thilina Kandamby, who collected a duck on Wednesday. Fast bowler Shaminda Eranga is the other player to cut from the squad.Sandakan, 23, is reputed to be an attacking bowler, and had an excellent first-class season with Colombo Cricket Club, topping the wicket-takers’ list with 54 scalps at an average of 19.14. He has only played two List A matches, but averages 22.32 across two first-class seasons. His relative inexperience in the top domestic competitions has seen him overlooked for all but one Sri Lanka A match, but he has regularly been a net bowler at the national side’s training sessions. Sandakan’s inclusion means Sri Lanka have four frontline spin bowlers in their 16-member squad, as well as legspinning allrounder Jeevan Mendis, and several part-time slow bowlers.Lakmal had been unavailable for selection since July, when he sustained a stress reaction in the third metatarsal in his left foot during the Tests against South Africa. His return is expected to provide control to Sri Lanka’s seam attack, which struggled in India in the absence of Lasith Malinga, and because of Nuwan Kulasekara’s dip in form. Lakmal effectively replaces Eranga, who had also had mediocre outings in India, though he has not played against England.Priyanjan, 25, had been dropped from the squad during the India tour, following scores of 12, 1 and 2 in the first three ODIs there. He has two fifties in 19 ODIs since his debut in December 2013.The fourth ODI is set to take place on Sunday in Colombo. Although the fifth is scheduled to be played in Pallekele on December 10, persistent bad weather in the Kandy region may prompt a change of venue – though that is yet to be decided

Warner ton seals bonus-point win

The difference between Australia and England was that David Warner’s 127 at the top of the order set the tone for the hosts, whereas Eoin Morgan’s 121 served merely to add a veneer of respectability to the tourists’ tally

The Report by Daniel Brettig at the SCG16-Jan-2015
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details2:10

Warner hundred blows away England

Two high quality hundreds were notched in this match, by Eoin Morgan and David Warner, while no other batsmen passed 40. The difference between Australia and England was that Warner’s 127 at the top of the order set the tone for the hosts, whereas Morgan’s 121 served merely to add a veneer of respectability to the tourists’ tally after their top order had been perforated by the day’s other major performer, Mitchell Starc.Ian Bell and James Taylor barely had time to adjust their eyes to a brilliantly sunny Sydney afternoon before Starc’s fast new-ball inswing pinned both lbw, but Morgan marshalled the lower order to drive the visitors to a total they could not have contemplated at a forlorn 5 for 69.Starc returned later to snip off the England tail, and Warner’s innings epitomised the level of certainty he has brought to his game in recent times, without any apparent loss of momentum. At the start of the week Warner had acknowledged his oddly diffident ODI record. Wtih a World Cup on the horizon he is intent on changing that, and the evening’s effort made for a fine start.Morgan’s appetite for Australian pitches and bowling is well known, but he had only once passed 50 in the 12 months since he performed well down under last summer, including a century in Brisbane that was to be overshadowed by James Faulkner’s rescue act when Australia chased. England needed something from their new captain, and Morgan delivered with a combination of smart placement and the odd blazing blow.Nevertheless, a chase of 235 was never likely to challenge Australia without a rush of early wickets, and Warner’s poise was such that this never appeared likely. There was the odd moment of early bluster, but these soon faded to the steady drum of his bat on the white ball, finding gaps and manipulating fields while the rest of the Australian order accompanied him in a series of useful stands.None of Aaron Finch, Shane Watson, Steven Smith, George Bailey or Glenn Maxwell kept Warner company for too long, but England’s poor start meant they did not need to, even as Chris Woakes bowled an exemplary line and also showed useful variation in pace for his four wickets. The major stutter of the innings took place after Moeen Ali flighted an offbreak past Smith’s outside edge; any anxiety was settled by a hat-trick of Brad Haddin boundaries.Starc and Pat Cummins had been fast and accurate with the new ball, the latter also finding the outside edge of Joe Root’s bat before the match was four overs old. Faulkner and Xavier Doherty offered sturdy support through the middle of the innings, but the likes of Watson and Glenn Maxwell were less able to put a clamp on the English scoring rate.A bare-looking Sydney pitch and a warm, sunny day had Australia selecting Doherty ahead of Gurinder Sandhu, while Bailey led in the absence of Michael Clarke. England elected not to choose James Anderson as he continued to build his workloads after his recovery from knee problems.Only around two overs of swing could be coaxed from the white Kookaburra, but in that time Starc bent it past Bell – who may have edged the ball – and Taylor. Root drove at the line of Cummins without noting the length nor the pace, and a bold cameo by Moeen was ended when he found deep cover, though one steel-wristed flick over the long-on fence will linger in the memory.Morgan had much to do, and Ravi Bopara contrived to cut Doherty straight to backward point. But Jos Buttler and Chris Jordan were able to hang around while a pair of 50 stands were raised, and Morgan’s confidence grew in direct proportion to his score. No fewer than 11 boundaries and three sixes flowed from his bat, leaving Australia to wonder about their prospects of chasing on a pitch that was starting to wear.Morgan hit out once too often after passing his century, picking out the man at deep midwicket having already carted Starc for a six and a four in the 48th over. The last man Finn was yorked the very next ball, England failing to bat out their 50 overs not for the first time in recent times, the sort of trend that helped lead to another defeat at the increasingly assured hands of Warner.
