Surrey grateful for Harinath's slow show

Surrey added 149 runs to their overnight score before the rain arrived to put an end to a slow day in Chelmsford

They say the Tuesday after the Bank Holiday weekend is worse than any Monday. The additional recovery day almost implores a second, maybe even third night of frivolity. For those at the Essex County Ground today, tomorrow’s inane chat about Saturday’s barbecue and Sunday’s heavy session – “What are you like?!” – can’t come soon enough.Just 121 runs were scored in the first 65 overs. The PA system blared out brass music and kettle drums around the ground throughout the lunch interval, as a cover of Pharrell Williams and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” taunted, attempting to administer a calypso shot in the arm. There was little response, as the rate flatlined at the ECG.It was only in the last five overs of the day, before the rain arrived to wipe out the evening session, that something stirred, as 28 runs were scored thanks to a combination of the new ball and Jason Roy, always a ball of energy at the crease, regardless of the situation. He was dropped twice, on 0 and 2, by Ben Foakes at short leg. Earlier in the day, Essex also gave Zafar Ansari a lifeline, when he was dropped on 16 by Greg Smith at first slip, off the bowling of Monty Panesar.Ansari went on to add 23 runs to his score, while Roy followed suit before departing for 25 to a ball that nipped in and kept a touch low to trap him lbw, giving new Essex signing Tom Moore his second first-class wicket. It would be irresponsible to point the finger at either side after such a dull day’s cricket. Of course, they do have a share to take from the collective gloom. Surrey’s batsmen treated the part-time spin of Tom Westley and Greg Smith like they were throwing down bolts of thunder and pestilence. When Essex took the new ball in the 89th over, James Foster gave Matt Salisbury an odd field, with three men on the drive, a third man yet no slips. Foster himself may have been under international scrutiny, with Bruce French, coacher of England’s wicketkeepers, taking the time to watch proceedings at Chelmsford, pen and pad in hand. But, to be fair to both teams, the pitch had slowed to almost a crawl. Any movement off the surface for the spinners has been slow enough to be negotiated. Any bounce, Roy’s wicket aside, dealt with in a comfortable manner. Steven Davies left Panesar many times on length alone, as the left-arm spinner struggled to find an optimum pace for the surface.Perhaps the only player to become one with the docile track was Arun Harinath. Quite how someone can remain so patient throughout the day and emerge with their sanity intact is, quite frankly, amazing. You imagine Harinath would hold firm under torture.Batting 172 balls for 42 extra runs, he packed away his drives – yes, he does have them – and played deliveries into pockets of space in front of the bat and around the corner to, eventually, reach fifty in his second start of the season, moving back to opener in the absence of Graeme Smith. All in all, he batted out 31 overs’ worth of dot balls and you could not help but feel for him when he lost his wicket to Greg Smith. It was far from a fluent innings and certainly one that will reinforce the notion among many that Harinath is a limited cricketer. But his runs have taken Surrey past 200 for a first batting point, with Davies well set on 36 and Gary Wilson at the crease to push on for further spoils in the remaining 17 overs of bonus scoring before they concentrate on establishing a lead.

SL claim series amid Senanayake controversy

Figures of 1 for 36 were just one thread of Sri Lanka’s series-clinching six-wicket win but, by running out Jos Buttler while the batsman was backing up, Sachithra Senanayake ensured that the narrative would be wound around him

The Report by Alan Gardner03-Jun-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAnyone who thought that Sachithra Senanayake being reported to the ICC for a suspect bowling action might be a cue for Sri Lanka to excuse him from duty, and the added attention it would bring, did not reckon with the player himself. Figures of 1 for 36, including the wicket of England’s top-scorer, Alastair Cook, were just one thread of Sri Lanka’s series-clinching six-wicket win but, by running out Jos Buttler while the batsman was backing up, Senanayake ensured that the narrative would be wound around him.Mahela Jayawardene and Lahiru Thirimanne scored half-centuries as Sri Lanka kept cool in an atmosphere that was simultaneously heated and damp. England’s bowlers, in particular James Tredwell and James Anderson, managed to ratchet up the asking rate but some business-like thumping from Angelo Mathews, who had to contend with a commentary from the fielding side over his role in Buttler’s dismissal, sealed victory and another fortifying series triumph ahead of the Tests.Mathews had earlier expressed his disappointment over Senanayake’s situation – he is required to undergo biomechanical testing within the next 20 days – but Sri Lanka’s capacity for turning adversity in their favour is well known. A comparable incident came during the triangular Carlton & United series in 1999, when Arjuna Ranatunga led his players off at Adelaide Oval after Ross Emerson no-balled Muttiah Muralitharan for throwing. England were again on the losing side, Sri Lanka chasing down a target of 303 with one wicket and two balls to spare.Sachithra Senanayake’s impact on the match stretched far beyond his bowling figures•PA Photos

As then, an offspinner with a controversial action was central to the drama. Having twice stopped in his delivery stride during the 42nd over to warn the batsmen – both Buttler and Chris Jordan – for backing up too far, Senanayake followed through on the threat in the 44th, turning slowly to break the wicket with Buttler a yard or so down the pitch. The umpires consulted Mathews, Sri Lanka’s captain, and he nodded his assent in upholding the appeal. That meant the first instance of ‘Mankading’ in international cricket since Peter Kirsten’s innings was ended by Kapil Dev in such a manner during an ODI between South Africa and India in 1992.There was predictable hostility from the crowd, even without suspicions over the legality of his bowling, but Senanayake was within his rights to make the appeal; the ICC changed its playing conditions in 2011 to allow bowlers to run out a batsman backing up at any point prior to releasing the ball, rather than before entering his delivery stride, as the MCC Laws state.Buttler’s dismissal, alongside creating a potential flashpoint, deprived England of their firestarter-in-chief for the closing overs of the innings. Although each of the top eight made it into double figures, no one could go beyond Cook’s stodgy 56, as they were bowled out for 219 with 11 deliveries remaining. Despite losing 3 for 7 in 21 balls and having to contend with the threat of rain throughout, Sri Lanka were not greatly taxed in overhauling their target. The openers, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kusal Perera, raised 50 together in the seventh over but Tredwell’s introduction briefly threatened to turn the match. His second ball was crashed by Dilshan to cover, where Joe Root took a fabulous diving catch, before a pearler two overs later straightened on Kumar Sangakkara to clip the outside edge and be taken at slip. Kusal’s dismissal, lbw to Anderson, left Sri Lanka 62 for 3 but England were left to regret a missed opportunity off Jayawardene when the batsman had 8 – a thick edge flying between Buttler and Jordan at slip – as a fourth-wicket stand of 98 carried the game away from them.Cook reversed one of the trends of the series on winning the toss at Edgbaston, becoming the first captain to choose to bat. The innings began in watery sunlight, though gloom enveloped the ground as the afternoon wore on and the floodlights were required earlier than expected. The start of Sri Lanka’s innings was then delayed by drizzle.A 76-run opening stand provided England with the foundation they set so much store by but no other partnership was worth 30 , as the batsmen battled to score on a surface that was tackier than a velour leopard-print tracksuit. Cook hauled along the tumbrel of England’s innings in familiar, dogged fashion, scoring his first ODI half-century in almost a year but, having reached 50 from 69 balls, he throttled back even further, partly in response to wickets falling, before being caught behind trying to sweep Senanayake for 56 from 84.As England subsided, doddering to a premature end from an initially promising position of 98 for 1, a player they have so far overlooked in one-day cricket was making a more positive statement elsewhere. Alex Hales’ 96-ball Championship hundred for Nottinghamshire, which he extended to 167 from 133, may turn out to be the most significant knock of the day, should England finally decide their World Cup strategy needs revision. With the series locked at 2-2 and both sides in search of a decisive advantage, Mathews turned to Senanayake in the sixth over, perhaps as a public show of support for the unorthodox spinner. His first ball was toe-ended for four through gully by Cook but his composure and control did not desert him, even with the additional scrutiny, a five-over spell costing just 18 despite coming during the period of fielding restrictions.Mathews was able to get through a few cheap overs from Dilshan and Ashan Priyanjan, the latter picking up Root, and the captain later brought himself on to good effect, having Eoin Morgan caught in the deep as wickets fell regularly.England took the batting Powerplay at the earliest opportunity, suggesting a show of intent, but Mathews, fronting up in turn, bowled his spinners throughout and he was rewarded when Ian Bell chipped a return catch to Ajantha Mendis. Bell’s innings was something of a curate’s egg and he should have been taken on 18, when Mahela Jayawardene seemed to misjudge a straightforward catch above his head at midwicket, off a Nuwan Kulasekara legcutter.Lasith Malinga was the next to strike, with England making seemingly comfortable progress at around five runs an over. They had hit the buffers long before Senanayake stepped into the full glare of the spotlight but that did not stop words being exchanged between the captains at the end. The Test series could be interesting.

On Tuesday, Scotland were beaten by 44 runs. On Wednesday, they thumped Netherlands by 144 runs. That they could draw level in the series with one to play was in large part due to a dominating century from opener Calum MacLeod, who knocked off 145 in 124 balls to lead the team to 317. By the time the rain came down 23 overs into the chase, Netherlands were well out of it at 115 for 7.Macleod’s assault included 14 fours and four sixes, and only built in momentum as the game went on. He was offered support from Preston Mommsen – who made his second score of 45 in two games – and Josh Davey. With Mommsen he added 92 at close to a run a ball, before carting 84 at 7.52 an over with Davey. That meant that not much of a contribution from the other batsmen did not make much of a difference, nor did seamer Ahsan Malik’s figures of 6 for 50.In the chase, it was offspinner Michael Leask who did most of the damage for Scotland, picking up four wickets in an economic spell and effecting a run-out.

'Samson the future for India'

Sanju Samson is “definitely the future” for India, according to his India A fielding and wicketkeeping coach Abhay Sharma. Samson, who turns 20 in November, was the leading run-getter for India A in their victorious campaign in the quadrangular one-day series in Darwin, Australia, with 244 runs from seven matches.”He is definitely the future for the country,” Abhay told ESPNcricinfo. “As a batsman, he is a very sensible player. He understands situations and adapts his game to them. His innings against Australia A in the opening match was outstanding. He took us close in a game we had almost lost.”Samson came in at 70 for 4 in a chase of 253, and saw his side slip further to 84 for 6. He responded with an 81 that brought down the equation to 29 needed off 23 before he was last man out. Though he failed in the final, he guided India A home in successive chases before that with scores of 55 and 49, both unbeaten.Samson, who has been prolific at Under-19 tournaments, also had a productive season with Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2014 with 339 runs at an average of 26.07 and a strike-rate of 124.17. Before that, he made 530 runs in the Ranji Trophy 2013-14 at 58.88. While he batted at No. 3 mostly for Royals, he moved down to No. 6 for India A in Darwin. When asked if there was a case for making better use of Samson in the top order in the future, Abhay said his workload would have to be managed considering his dual utility as a batsman and a keeper. “Going forward, we will have to handle him very well, for he has to bat and keep too. He took that responsibility very well this time but we will have to work on him very carefully.”Abhay, a former Railways captain and wicketkeeper, said that Samson’s keeping was also coming along quite well, and he was keen to learn. “His keeping is improving day by day. A little more work has to be done on a couple of technical things and constant monitoring is needed. He is a very good learner. He readily understands what I want to communicate and implements my plan. At times there is not even the need to speak to him and he will pick up even little signs. He has adapted very well to these conditions. A stumping he pulled off down the leg side was simply outstanding.”Abhay was also pleased with the standard of India A’s ground fielding. The side claimed four run-outs in a match against the Australian National Performance Squad, and Abhay said that game stood out for him for the number of times India had found their target.”We had 18 direct hits in that match, four of which resulted in run-outs. We had been working on target-hitting and it was great to see the intensity and momentum we created on the field. We even worked on slip catching on the second attempt when someone drops a chance the first time and Manoj (Tiwary) took one such catch in a game. It was very satisfying to see that.”
