Estamos satisfeitos.

Johnson comes full circle with Ashes win

Mitchell Johnson used to be an object of ridicule for English fans, but as he took the final Ashes-sealing wicket, his journey from wayward bowler to tyrant was made complete

Brydon Coverdale in Perth18-Dec-2013

Mitchell Johnson: An object of ridicule no more•AFP

There have been times in Mitchell Johnson’s past as an erratic Ashes bowler when his emotions might have got the better of him, but not like they did on the final day at the WACA. Johnson was on the verge of tears as he shook the hands of England’s batsmen and umpires in the moments immediately following his Ashes-sealing wicket of James Anderson. It was a cathartic day for several Australians, none more so than Johnson. The subject of Barmy Army taunts in previous Ashes campaigns, Johnson had always struggled to live up to expectations against England, remembered more for his wayward spells than his challenging ones. But at 32, now a husband and father with a greater perspective on life and cricket, Johnson entered this series in a different state of mind. He has been, without question, Australia’s most influential player in the series. It is not just the wickets, although his tally of 23 at 15.47 and a strike-rate of a wicket every 33 balls is remarkable. It has been his pace, accuracy and consistency that has troubled England over the first three Tests. If England were metaphorically on the back foot coming to Perth, it was largely because Johnson had literally forced them on to the back foot in the first two Tests. It was fitting that he took the wicket that confirmed the triumph. It might easily have ended differently for Johnson, for one of the ugliest sights of the whole series came on the final day at the WACA when Johnson tried to do the team thing and cut off a boundary at deep square leg. His awkward slide was vividly reminiscent of Simon Jones’ slide at the Gabba in 2002-03, which resulted in a ruptured cruciate ligament. Johnson’s right knee jolted with such force in the WACA turf that viewers turned away from replays.Johnson was fortunate that a dirty set of whites was the worst that resulted of it and after a few stretches he returned to the top of his mark to bowl the next over. After a change of trousers at the lunch break, Johnson was back on the field to wrap up Australia’s victory.”I think Mitch has known his role from the start of this series,” Michael Clarke, the captain, said. “He’s known what I’ve expected of him in this team at the moment with other bowlers around him. And credit to the other guys, because I think they’ve played a big part to allow Mitch to bowl the way he has bowled.”But this game was a really good example. Mitch’s pace probably wasn’t as high as it was in the first two Test matches, but he executed with skill, and he’s got natural variation. You saw there he got a wicket with the slower ball as well. He was able to bowl good areas. That’s the class of Mitchell Johnson. Through his career he’s been used in different situations. He’s bowled long spells. He’s opened the bowling. He’s bowled first change. He can do all of that.”It’s just about what is best for the team. It’s just another example of players putting the team first. He’s been happy to bowl in short spells and maximise his pace, and then throughout this Test match at times he’s had to bowl longer spells and be more consistent, and he’s able to do that, which is very pleasing.”Johnson finished with match figures of 6 for 140 at the WACA to give him 23 for the series. England’s two main strike bowlers, Anderson and Stuart Broad, haven’t even taken that many between them. England’s captain, Alastair Cook, said his men had always known that Johnson could provide a serious threat when in form, but they had been surprised by his control and lack of loose balls this time around.”We’ve known that when Mitch gets it right, he’s a very good bowler,” Cook said. “Even when he was having that tough series in 2010-11, when he got it right here in Perth he [proved he] was a tough bowler to face. He bowls quickly and swings it, and that’s a pretty good combination. 230-odd wickets suggests he’s done it for a fair period of time. When he gets it right he’s dangerous.”It hasn’t surprised that he’s taken wickets, but I think it’s surprised us the control he’s had. He’s managed to improve his control a lot since the last time we saw him.”

Manan Vohra hit 62 off 39 to help defending champions DAV College, Chandigarh, get off to a winning start in the Red Bull Campus Cricket national finals, against Chennai’s SRM University. Vohra’s half-century powered DAV to 170 for 5 in their 20, before left-arm spinner Gurinder Singh claimed a five-for to derail SRM’s chase.DAV chose to bat and were provided a fine start by their opening pair of Vohra – who made headlines last month when he was retained ahead of the IPL 2014 auction by Kings XI Punjab – and Jaskaran Singh, who was the player of the series in the last year’s Red Bull national finals. They put on 104 in under 13 overs, before No. 3 Ankit Kaushik steered the late flourish with 31 not out off 21. He did not receive much support – SRM did manage to strike with regularity towards the end – but the middle-order batsmen managed a big hit each to get the team up to 170.Opener Shahjahan provided the only contribution of note in the chase, with 50 off 45. The other opener, R Pradip Kumar, was run out in the second over, and the middle order was carved up by Gurinder, who took 5 for 25 in his four. Apart from Shahjahan, only two batsmen got into double digits, and neither of them touched 20. SRM were bowled out with three balls to spare, 52 adrift of their target. The win means DAV are through to the semi-finals, on February 6, while SRM are out of the competition.

– Precisamos pregar bastante respeito.

O Palmeiras e o Cruzeiro montaram excelentes grupos.

Broad 'not deeply involved' in KP axe

Stuart Broad has said he did not have a major involvement in the decision to sack Kevin Pietersen despite his role as Twenty20 captain but believes that changes had to be made after a “disaster” of a tour in Australia

Changes needed after ‘disaster’ – Broad

Stuart Broad on KP: ‘A decision was taken by guys who are desperate for England to improve in the future’•Getty Images

Stuart Broad has said he did not have a major involvement in the decision to sack Kevin Pietersen despite his role as Twenty20 captain but believes that changes had to be made after a “disaster” of a tour in Australia which meant England “lost a lot of good men.”No single reason has been given for Pietersen’s departure with the ECB talking – through press releases – about “team ethics” and the need to back Alastair Cook, who has been rested from the one-day leg of the West Indies tour, as the Test and ODI captain but the topic was not off-limits at England’s pre-departure press conference as they flew out to the West Indies. It has been reported that Broad wanted Pietersen in his side for the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh next month but while he acknowledged the role Pietersen had played he was keen to talk about “moving forward.” However, he did offer a hint that the environment behind the scenes had become difficult during the debilitating stay in Australia.”I was aware of discussions towards the end of the Australia tour but I was not deeply involved particularly,” Broad said of the decision to end Pietersen’s international career. “It was a decision made by guys that have the English cricket team at their heart, and they want the team to improve.”The guys that made the decision are very keen for England cricket to move forward, there’s no egos involved in making decisions like this. It’s about improving performances on the field and atmospheres off it. All I can focus on is this trip now.”The last time England were in the Caribbean was for the 2010 World Twenty20 when they secured their only piece of global silverware in a team captained by Paul Collingwood who has been appointed assistant coach for this trip and Bangladesh. Pietersen was Man of the Tournament in that event and Broad remembered the good times he had helped bring to English cricket.”There’s no doubt Kev was a fantastic player for England, part of a hugely successful era,” he said. “I have fond memories of KP from 2010 when he was the kingpin in helping us win that World Cup. But it’s time for the guys in that changing room to realise they can be match-winners and can step up now.”Broad admitted he did not spend much time with Pietersen in Australia but was also keen to mention others who suffered on the tour. “To be honest, I didn’t see a lot of Kev in Australia. We crossed paths going to the middle,” he said.”I’ll repeat that KP has been a fantastic player for England – he’s scored a lot of match-winning runs but a decision was taken by guys who are desperate for England to improve in the future not just over the next four or five months but going forward in to the next few years.”It was heartbreaking to go to Australia and lose 5-0 and we’ve lost a few good men in doing that – [Andy] Flower has stepped down and [Graeme] Swann retired and obviously [Jonathan Trott] Trotty went home and [Steve Finn] Finny. It’s a winter that was a disaster, but as an England side we have to look forward now.”The new era begins with three ODIs and three T20s in the Caribbean before England head to Bangladesh. Although the West Indies leg includes one-day matches, the squad is very much geared towards the 20-over campaign. The squad contains three uncapped players in Moeen Ali, Stephen Parry and Harry Gurney although the latter is only part of the one-day team.”We don’t spend a lot of time together as a T20 side, so we’ve got to make use of these next three weeks,” Broad said. “We are going to Bangladesh in three weeks’ time with an opportunity to show something different.”When you’ve lost so many games over the last six months, it hurts, so we’ve just got to get back to winning to be honest. Twenty20 is about match-winners and taking the game by the scruff of the neck, so that’s the challenge for this young group now.”

Graeme Smith announces South Africa retirement

Graeme Smith has announced he will retire from international cricket at the conclusion of the final Test against South Africa in Cape Town

Graeme Smith has announced he will retire from international cricket at the conclusion of the final Test against Australia in Cape Town.Smith, 33, is playing his 117th Test match – 109 of which have been as captain, a world record – and currently stands on 9257 runs. He revealed the news to his team-mates after the third day’s play at Newlands. He said finishing on his home ground felt like the perfect ending and that it was something he had been considering since ankle surgery last year.”This has been the most difficult decision I have ever had to make in my life,” he said. “It’s a decision that I have been considering since my ankle surgery in April last year. I have a young family to consider, and I felt that retiring at Newlands would be the best way to end it because I have called this place home since I was 18 years-old.”I have always been someone who has left everything out there on the field for my team and for my country. I’m extremely honoured and proud to have had the privilege to lead so many wonderful players and to have been a part of building the Proteas culture to what it is today. It is a culture that every player can be, and is, immensely proud of.”In the current series, with one innings remaining, Smith has made just 42 runs and has been troubled particularly by Mitchell Johnson. He has not scored a half-century for eight innings – although did make 234 against Pakistan in October – and if South Africa lose against Australia it will be their first series loss since 2008-09. There were rumours before the India series late last year that Smith, who took on the captaincy in 2003, threatened to resign over selection issues. His statement continued: “I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the support from my parents and brother, my wife and children, my friends, my sponsors, my fans and to Cricket South Africa. I thank and honour the players who I have played with and those who have supported me and helped me to be the person and captain I am today.”I have been fortunate to have had many highs, amongst them leading and being part of the best Test team in the world. I will cherish these memories for the rest of my life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I bid my career a fond yet sad farewell.”One of many of the notable statistics in Smith’s career is that none of his 27th Test hundreds have come in a defeat. Stand-out performances that he will be remembered for include back-to-back double hundreds against England in 2003, his series-winning innings at Edgbaston in 2008, captaining South Africa to a series with in Australia, during which he came out to bat with a broken hand in Sydney, and maintaining South Africa’s formidable record on the subcontinent.Smith’s retirement follows quickly on from that of Jacques Kallis who quit Test cricket at the end of last year, although Kallis is aiming to extend his ODI career to take part in the World Cup. Smith’s one-day career had appeared to be on the wane when he was dropped after last year’s series against Pakistan in the UAE; in 197 ODIs he scored 6989 runs at 37.98 with 10 hundreds. One of the impacts of Smith’s retirement is that he will now be able to play for Surrey as a non-overseas player due to his Irish citizenship. The first year of his deal was cut short by his need for ankle surgery. When he signed his contract with Surrey there were suggestions at the time that he could end his South Africa career there and then.Haroon Lorgat, the Cricket South Africa chief executive, admitted Smith’s decision had come as a shock and praised his “nerves of steel”.”Although Graeme’s decision to retire from all forms of international cricket comes as a surprise to all of us, we must respect him for deciding to call time,” he said. “Knowing him as well as I do, having been instrumental as a selector in appointing him as a young captain, he would not have taken this decision lightly or without a great deal of thought.”He has captained the Proteas for more than a decade and he will draw a lot more satisfaction from the fact that he leaves our Test team at the top of the world and in such good health rather than from all the personal records he has achieved as the longest-serving captain the game has ever seen in the demanding Test format.”I would like us to remember Graeme for his nerves of steel and his match-winning performances that were synonymous with some of the most remarkable fourth innings victory chases of all time. These included setting up the 414 runs chase against Australia at Perth and his series-clinching innings at Edgbaston in 2008, not to mention the unbeaten century the last time he faced Australia at Newlands in 2011. His role in setting up the famous 438 win over Australia in 2006 was also a performance never to be forgotten.”He can leave the game with pride and he thoroughly deserves the gratitude of our nation for leading the Proteas with much distinction. From a personal point of view I am thrilled that I was part of the panel that appointed him captain in 2003 when his first major assignment was a tough tour to England and I feel privileged to see him now move on to the next stage of his career. He has been a mighty warrior, a leader of men and an exceptional part of our international cricket.”
