– Tenho esperança e o Tite sempre citou meu nome.

Toughened Tremlett ready to lead attack

Chris Tremlett is a man whose sheer physical presence at Cardiff on Monday translated into the most telling spell of his career to date

At 6’6″, Stuart Broad cannot have been dismissed as a “midget” on too many occasions in his international career, but he could well be made to look like the runt of the litter if, as expected, England field the tallest pace trio in Test history at Lord’s this week. The lanky Steven Finn is standing by to replace the injured James Anderson, but towering above all of his colleagues will be the bona fide beefcake, Chris Tremlett, a man whose sheer physical presence at Cardiff on Monday translated into the most telling spell of his career to date. There’s only a matter of inches separating the heights of England’s three tallest seamers, but with legs like tree-trunks and shoulders that can appear to be the width of the pitch as he bears down on his opponents, Tremlett’s physique has more in common with brick privies than the beanpoles that his team-mates can occasionally resemble. At the age of 29, and four Tests into his second coming as an international cricketer, he has at last found the self-confidence to match his natural aptitude for fast bowling.”Naturally I’m a pretty wide-built guy and I’m a pretty intimidating character to face,” Tremlett told reporters at Lord’s, two days after his spell of 4 for 40 in ten overs had secured a stunning England victory by an innings and 14 runs in the first Test. “I guess I’ve always been a believer in letting the ball do the talking, but in the last couple of years, I’ve become more confident and more aggressive on the field. Being six foot whatever you always have a slight advantage bowling at any batsman.”It took a well-documented shift from the home comforts of Hampshire (where his father Tim is director of cricket) to Surrey for Tremlett to prove he was ready to resume his Test career. However, the impact he has made in his second coming has been staggering. From his five-wicket haul on the first day of the Perth Test to his Ashes-clinching dismissal of Michael Beer at Sydney, he has been in the thick of the action for England, and was at it again in Cardiff this week, when he scalped both Sri Lanka’s openers in the space of eight deliveries to make possible their sensational collapse to 82 all out.Such imposing performances had been anticipated when Tremlett made his Test debut against India four years ago. However, despite some encouraging performances – particularly at Trent Bridge where he claimed six wickets in the match including 3 for 12 to delay India’s victory charge on the fifth morning – there was a certain something lacking from his armoury. “I did try to be aggressive but I guess it was forced a bit, to be honest,” he recalled. “I tried to be someone I wasn’t … it was difficult to be nasty.”He’s finding it rather easier now. As many of the great West Indian fast bowlers would testify, verbal aggression is not a requisite to Test success – witness the silent menace of Andy Roberts, Joel Garner and Curtly Ambrose, to name but three. However, in the opinion of his former captain at Hampshire, Shane Warne, Tremlett’s body language betrayed him as a soft touch, a charge the man himself did not dispute.”I won’t disagree with Warney,” he said. “I was a bit timid at times, but the older I’ve got, with more confidence and age, being more aggressive comes more naturally to me, and I guess my competitiveness has gone up, certainly since moving to Surrey. I perhaps held back a bit at Hampshire. These days, I don’t think about it too much – it just happens.”Nevertheless, it was Warne who came up with the one piece of advice that Tremlett has carried into the rest of his career. “If it wasn’t going well for me, for example, bowling no-balls, he said ‘just find a way’. That’s really stuck with me in my career. Don’t look for excuses, keep going and somehow find a way to get the job done.”He did that and more in Cardiff, in a bowling performance that scattered Sri Lanka’s batting in less than 25 overs all told, and left their coach, Stuart Law, ruefully contemplating the challenge of “getting forward to half-volleys that hit you in the chest.” “In the first innings I tried to get it up a little bit but my execution wasn’t quite as good,” said Tremlett. “In the second innings I did get it right, and my rhythm felt a lot better.”Had it not been for Anderson’s side strain, Tremlett might not have been unleashed with the new ball for that decisive spell, but having used the conditions to perfection, it might be a while before England strip him of the honour. “I maybe offer a bit more with the extra bounce you get with a new ball, so I do enjoy bowling with it,” he said. “But I still feel I can play whatever role, new ball or change. I’m pretty flexible on that.”The wicket at Cardiff was particularly slow, so it will be interesting to see what it’s like at Lord’s and whether we’ll go for our shorter bowlers. But myself, Finny and Broad always have that natural advantage over those guys that are 6ft. The short ball is a great weapon – and playing against this team, they are not used to it at times. It could be a plan we’ll go with, but we’ll assess that on the day. It’s something to think of.”The overall impression is of a cricketer who has found his niche. Jonathan Trott, England’s new-crowned player of the year, admitted it took him until his century in the Boxing Day Test to truly feel as though he belonged in the side, and while Tremlett was careful not to tempt fate given his history of injuries, he too admitted he feels at ease in the set-up, and confident of his worth.”The England management know what they’re going to get – whereas maybe a couple of years ago, when I was bit more inconsistent, they didn’t know which Chris Tremlett was going to turn up on the day,” he said. “I guess anything can happen with injuries as a bowler, so I’m not taking anything for granted, and I have had an injury history which will always stick with me in some regards, but it’s great to have had an injury-free year and hopefully that will continue.”

O atacante voltou a balançar a rede adversária e ganhou elogios do treinador.

England pair Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann shared four wickets on their return to county duty as Nottinghamshire fought back to dismiss Sussex for 304 on the first day of the County Championship match at Hove. Sussex looked like making the most of winning the toss when openers Ed Joyce and Chris Nash posted their third century stand of the season. But Sussex were never the same after Joyce and Luke Wells fell just before lunch.A dry pitch is already turning, albeit slowly, and five of the wickets fell to spin. Swann removed Joyce with his 10th delivery while Samit Patel finished with 3 for 37 including skipper Mike Yardy and Nash, who passed 50 for the fifth time this season without converting it into a hundred.Nash and Joyce scored at five-an-over for most of the morning session with Nash, who raced to 50 off 35 balls, taking full advantage of some wayward bowling, particularly from Andre Adams. But Swann struck in his second over when Joyce was leg before to a ball which turned and struck him high on the pad and just before lunch Wells, who has scored two centuries already this summer, was bowled for a 21-ball duck by Patel.Murray Goodwin struck Adams for two fours in an over but the New Zealander broke through when wicketkeeper Chris Read ran backwards to take an excellent diving catch off a mis-timed pull to leave Sussex on 119 for 3.Matt Prior, who was also making his Championship return, added 70 in 17 overs with Nash to regain the initiative but Swann returned to the attack and struck straightaway when Prior sliced Swann’s first ball back to cover. Nash had looked untroubled, hitting 13 fours in 205 minutes in moving to his highest score of the season. But seven short of his hundred he missed a straight one from Patel and was did not look surprised when the leg before appeal was upheld.Yardy, also making his first Championship appearance of the season as he recovers from depression, helped England team-mate Luke Wright put on 39 for the sixth wicket either side of tea. But Patel struck again when he turned one as Yardy tried to drive and Adam Voges snapped up the edge at slip.Wright took the attack to Swann, twice striking him off the front foot to the boundary in an over, and was going well on 33 when Broad returned to the attack and to have him caught down the leg side. Broad was in business again later in the over when his nip-backer trapped James Anyon and Sussex were still 18 short of securing a third batting point whenAmjad Khan played across his pads to give the persevering Luke Fletcher a wicket. But Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, mixing careful defence with the occasional attacking flourish, made an unbeaten 43 off 52 balls with six fours and helped last man Monty Panesar take the score to 304 before Panesar played on to give Adams his 500th first-class wicket.Panesar is likely to have plenty of work as the contest unfolds and he and his team-mates finished the day on a positive note when Rana struck in his second over with the new ball, bowling left-hander Neil Edwards via an inside edge as Notts closed on 5 for 1.

England Women made it two one-sided matches on the opening day of the quadrangular series with a comfortable eight-wicket victory over New Zealand Women at Chelmsford.England’s spinners proved a key weapon, as Holly Colvin and Laura Marsh shared five wickets, while Aaron Brindle marked her return to international cricket with 3 for 11. Needing barely four-an-over for victory England had few problems during their chase as captain Charlotte Edwards led the way with an unbeaten 40.The tone for the match was set in the first over when Katherine Brunt removed Aimee Watkins with a wonderful leg-cutter. Although a second-wicket stand of 34 steadied New Zealand there was never any momentum behind the innings and when Colvin struck three times the slide was on.England’s fielding was also sharp, although Sarah Taylor needed some luck to gain a stumping off her pads to give Brindle her first wicket who also ended the innings with three balls unused.Edwards and Marsh then gave the run chase a rapid start as they added 42 inside the Powerplay. Marsh hit four fours in her 24 – New Zealand only hit four in their whole innings – before falling to Sian Ruck, but nothing was going to stop England.”Katherine Brunt bowled brilliantly today and the spinners chipped away and bowled fantastically and were backed up well by the fielders,” Edwards said after the game. “We’ve worked hard on our fielding recently and it has been something we have always prided ourselves on, so I’m really pleased with the performance today. It’s great the way we went out there and knocked off the runs, we were aggressive from the start and Laura Marsh played fantastically well.”I’m really looking forward to playing Australia on Saturday, they won today too so it should be an exciting game in Bristol.”

Cutting, Saurabh shine on second day

A round-up of the action from the second day of the Emerging Players Tournament

Saurabh Tiwary slammed seven sixes in his two outings on the second day•AFP

Australian Institute of Sport beat New Zealand A by 14 runs at Peter Burge Oval in Brisbane to hand them their second defeat in as many games. New Zealand won the toss and had the early ascendancy when Andy McKay removed AIS opener Sam Whiteman for a third-ball duck. Tim Armstrong however ensured AIS did not suffer too much from the early setback, with an unbeaten 74 off 66 balls. He shared in two substantial partnerships for the second and third wickets, with Tom Beaton and captain Ryan Carters respectively, to steer the hosts to a strong score, despite a closing-overs slump. New Zealand’s chase ran into early trouble as they lost four cheap wickets, including two to run-outs. Luke Woodcock struck a fighting half-century to keep the chase alive, but Ben Cutting’s stifling spell (3 for 15) ensured New Zealand would fall well short.South Africa Emerging Players sneaked to a thrilling four-wicket win against India Emerging Players in a game that ended off the last ball at Fred Kratzman Oval in Brisbane. Asked to bat first, India were propelled by an aggressive 45 off 33 balls from S Anirudha. Ajinkya Rahane contributed a quick 29, but the innings owed a lot to Saurabh Tiwary, whose four sixes in 40 off 32 balls provided the final kick. Mthokozisi Shezi was impressive in picking up 2 for 15 in his four overs. Chasing 157, South Africa stumbled thanks to early strikes by Jaidev Unadkat, but Temba Bavuma reignited the innings with a decisive 57 not out off 31 balls. Obus Pienaar and Mangaliso Mosehle provided just enough support to take their side home off the last ball.New Zealand A bounced back after losses in their first two games, with a 13-run win against South Africa Emerging Players at Peter Burge Oval. Neil Broom anchored New Zealand with 47, while Doug Bracewell and Derek de Boorder contributed scores in the 30s to steer their side to 156. South Africa started off superbly with Richard Levi smashing 74 off 40 balls with five fours and five sixes. Reeza Hendricks supported him well with 32 off 40 balls, but South Africa collapsed spectacularly after their exits. Bracewell was at it with the ball as well, snapping up two wickets for 16 runs in three overs, while Trent Boult picked up 2 for 19, as South Africa finished well short of the target.India Emerging Players wound up the day’s action with a six-run win over Australian Institute of Sport at the Fred Kratzman Oval. India chose to bat, and while many of their batsmen got off to starts, there wasn’t a single half-century in their innings. Captain Shikhar Dhawan and Ambati Rayudu made 30 apiece, while Saurabh Tiwary launched three sixes in 29 off 14 balls. Manoj Tiwary complemented him with 36 off 23 balls and India were set for a big score, but Ben Cutting stalled them with a series of late strikes that earned him a five-wicket haul. India opened their bowling with left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdulla and his two early wickets pushed the hosts on to the back foot immediately. Glenn Maxwell turned things around with a rousing 59 off 23 balls, which included seven sixes, as Jaidev Unadkat and Bhargav Bhatt suffered. Umesh Yadav managed to end Maxwell’s carnage, and Australia’s chase lost steam steadily. Vinay Kumar finished with a three-wicket haul to give India their second victory in three games.
