Recent reports have suggested that Aston Villa are in the race for Inter Milan defender Stefan De Vrij, with the Dutchman set to be available for as little as £15m, with just a year remaining on his existing deal.

That news comes amid suggestions that manager Steven Gerrard is eyeing a new left-sided centre-back this summer, throwing into doubt the future of England international Tyrone Mings.

Further rumours this week have also claimed that the current club captain could well be moved on in the upcoming window, with fellow defender Ezri Konsa another name potentially on the chopping block.

Such speculation illustrates a notable decline this season for Mings, in particular, with the 29-year-old having gone from starting group stage games at Euro 2020 to fearing for his place at club level, all in the space of just ten months.

Pundit Danny Mills has previously suggested that the former Bournemouth giant was “fortunate” to earn a Three Lions call up in the first place, while the 44-year-old also more recently slated the Villa man for his current displays, insisting that there “seems to be a mistake in his game somewhere.”

The statistics also prove rather damning, with the £28.8m-rated man part of a backline that has shipped 46 goals this season – the tenth-worst in the division – while he has also given away one penalty and committed one error leading to a goal in the top-flight this term.

In De Vrij then, Gerrard appears to have identified a viable alternative, with the 30-year-old offering a wealth of experience, having made 55 caps for his country as well as being a vital part of Antonio Conte’s title-winning Inter team last season.

As for this term, as the Italian giants chase a second successive Serie A title, the £116k-per-week “monster” – as he has been described by former Lazio teammate Mauricio – has caught the eye again, averaging 1.8 clearances, 1.3 tackles and one interception per game.

Not just impressive defensively – with the one-time Feyenoord man lining up on the left of a back three at the San Siro – he is also comfortable in possession, ranking in the top 5% for pass completion among centre-backs in Europe’s top five leagues.

As the current Villa boss seeks to take the ambitious club back towards the European qualification places next season, a quality upgrade such as De Vrij could be what is needed, with £80k-per-week Mings the man who must give way.

Roger Machado reservou o treino desta quarta-feira para dar ritmo de jogo a jogadores que atuaram por poucos ou nenhum minuto nesta temporada, casos do zagueiro Edu Dracena e do lateral-esquerdo Diogo Barbosa. O auxiliar Roberto Ribas comandou uma rara atividade no campo todo e com longa duração para simular uma partida – os treinos têm sido quase todos em espaço reduzido e de tiro curto.

Dracena fez uma pré-temporada individualizada para minimizar o risco de lesões e soma apenas 45 minutos na temporada – o segundo tempo da vitória por 5 a 0 sobre o Novorizontino. Diogo Barbosa, por sua vez, sofreu uma lesão grave no tornozelo logo que chegou e ainda nem estreou, embora já esteja indo para os jogos como opção no banco de reservas.

O lateral-direito Mayke também aproveitou o treino para começar a retomar o ritmo. Ele fez um trabalho deste tipo pela primeira vez desde a lesão no tornozelo direito que o acabou tirando da listas de inscritos do Campeonato Paulista.

Como os titulares do jogo contra o Santos fizeram trabalhos na parte interna, diversos garotos da base completaram o treino. Destaque para Yan, atacante que foi bem na Copinha e acaba de ser comprado do Vitória. Guilherme Vieira, artilheiro da Copa do Brasil Sub-17 do ano passado e agora integrado ao sub-20, também foi utilizado.

O lance mais bonito do treino foi protagonizado por Hyoran, que percebeu Weverton adiantado e arriscou um chute do meio de campo. O goleiro conseguiu se recuperar e evitou o gol com uma defesa difícil.

Ter todos os atletas com ritmo de competição será importante porque o Palmeiras terá uma maratona nos próximos dias. As finais do Paulista, nos dois próximos fins de semana, vão se intercalar com dois jogos da Libertadores: Alianza Lima e Boca Juniors, ambos em casa.

On a dry and flat wicket that, contrary to expectations, played low and slow, Rajasthan set themselves up for a big score on the second day, though captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar’s late dismissal evened things out a bit.Kanitkar and Robin Bist led a calculated batting effort, in which each of the four specialist batsman played more than 100 deliveries. The Rajasthan batsmen blunted the inexperienced Baroda attack and inched along at around two runs per over for the first two sessions. Playing themselves in was the target, and Rajasthan’s intent to bat big was evident from the fact that only one boundary came in the first 20 overs. But Baroda did not possess the venom to prise out the watchful openers on the flat deck.The wind that was expected to aid movement did not arrive, the bald wicket offered no help either, and left-arm seamer Sankalp Vohra’s first delivery died down on its way to wicketkeeper Pinal Shah.
